How does Kindle fire HD update? - 7" Kindle Fire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got a KFHD and the second time I turned it on, it told me it was updating. I assume it was an automatic update.
Since getting it, I've side loaded a lot of apps which Amazon obviously feel I am not either worthy, competent or free thinking enough to use.
I find the KFHD is a decent tablet now, despite, rather than because of, Amazon's mania for control (and, I assume, the dollar signs behind its eyes), The thing which worries me, though, is that Amazon will close the door on sideloading, and release an update which stops the sideloaded aps working.
Is there a way of turning off auto updating (if it indeed auto updates)? Or is there a way of copying the operating system I have now, and replacing any future update?
Thanks

Yes, the KFHD does indeed auto-update the firmware. You can possibly try airplane mode when you're not using it, but sort of defeats the purpose of having it connected to wifi.

Hmmm, why do I have a feeling that somewhere deep in the Amazon control bunker someone, somewhere is working to lock out every app I've sideloaded?
Though knowing Amazon, they'll probably offer the option of a one off payment to open them up again.
Why do they not see that open equals greater usage, and as such, more sales?

Is it possible to turn off autoupdates?
I have a rooted Devices.. Its very beautyfull and i won´t that a autoupdate kills my Mods

Noone knows that?

[Q] Mystery call charges

I have this problem with both Galaxy S and S2. Every now and then I see a notification telling me "Your last call cost xxx" - claiming I made a call that cost me something, when I have made no calls at all. It happens often when I make a data connection or disconnection, and when all I do is turn on the screen from sleep. Has anyone had this problem? I experienced the problem with AT&T in the US as well as one of the operators in Nigeria (where I spend most of my time). But it seems it has nothing to do with the operator, or does it?
Nope. If you have rooted phone, you can go to Market, bownload small app: Permissions Denied, and using it, look closely which app is able to use phone... it is likely that you have downloaded game or app with some trojan in it, especially if it was cracked.

This was my first thought as well. Find out which Apps can make calls, and single them out 'til you find the culprit. It's the only thing that comes to mind for me.
If this is something "smart" it may survive uninstall...

I doubt it. Even if it could, you could freeze it and then uninstall it with Titanium Backup, manually delete it and it's components, remove it via ADB, etc.
Anything that you installed recently, (or even updated) check the comments for "malware" from other users in the market...

GPS Continuously Loses Lock

I had 2 VZW Moto Xs and they rocked. About 10 days ago I switched to TMO Moto Xs and the GPS loses lock on both of them. Much like the first set, they get lock very quickly, but both the TMO units acted strangely during nav and when I installed GPS Status I see that the GPS gets lock, the coordinates are displayed, then about 10 sec later it searches for lock again, the coordinates aren't returned, and then it relocks.
This causes a real usability issue when it comes to navigation. If it was one of these I'd think I had a dud, but the VZW units worked fine and the TMO units both have this bug.
Has anyone seen similar issues?

I use gps daily and i've only come across an issue with it 2x when i went to New York City. basically, it was putting my location all over the map, as if it couldnt find me. Im guessing the high rise buildings had something to do with it.
as far as gps losing lock, I have notice that as well. I never toggle it off and yet I have to turn it maybe once/twice a month
The lock problem I have is pretty continuous, and restarting doesn't seem to help. Wondering I'd there was a bad run somehow.

I also encountered this issue.
I reset the phone and it went back normal; however, it occasionally still acts weird. I'm on tmobile as well.
Hope someone can figure this out

For those of you seeing this issue, when it pops up, go into settings > location and see if you see LocationServices listed twice... One with a size of 120k, and the other 136k.

Not yet... but it seems out of place.
My history with GPS "not quite working" was about it being extremely hit and miss about detecting me driving. When this would happen, I'd notice problems with Maps as well.
After a factory reset, it all worked fine. But as soon as I reinstalled Yelp, the issue returned. I'm not certain that yelp is the culprit as in hindsight, I really didn't confirm proper operation after the reset for a long enough period of time given the intermittent nature of the problem.
Next step is to try and determine if two of these same processes is normal, and if not, which one doesn't belong, and where it's coming from. There is a thread in the Moto forums I started. One person there who sees only one occurrence of the process stated his is 120k in size. One of my posts also has a list of all my third party apps that use location services. It would be helpful to know which apps are in common with folks having this issue. The thread is at:

So you are saying this can be software issue? I have a T-Mobile Moto X and I use the phone mostly for Navigation and this is driving me crazy. I am thinking that my phone is defective and been on the phone for 30+ min trying to get support.
I have the same issue

I went ahead and posted my situation to https://forums.motorola.com/posts/8a2bf78f04?commentId=755612#755612. There are no apps in common with all three devices (yours, mine, my wife's). The quest continues.
I must add that I also had this problem on my previous phones, Note 2 and Galaxy Mega 6.3. The problem started around the past summer.

I confirm that I force stop the 120 k location service file, and the problem is gone. Need to do that again after a reset though.

When you say 'reset', do you mean reset or just rebooting your phone?
BTW, I have no LocationServices on my Nexus 4, so these seem to be Moto's binaries, which makes sense.
Would appreciate you keeping us posted if this continues to address the issue and causes no additional problems.

I have the same problem. XT1053 on T-Mobile constantly loses GPS signal while driving. Happens in wide open areas with no buildings. I have tried wiping the device and not installing any additional apps and have the same results. I can be sitting at a traffic light have GPS signal, lose it for a few seconds then get it back without having moved.
Here is a poorly shot video of this happening. I will try and get something more clear tomorrow.

I returned my phone for this issue yesterday. I had navigation issues along with the drive assist problem. While driving maps world just stop. If I was at a turn and turned left the map would stay stuck at the turn long after I turned. It eventually would catch up. Loosing and gaining lock would perfectly explain this.
Update: I got a replacement phone. The new phone has the same problems. May be a bit worse.
Sent from my XT1053 using Tapatalk
Been chasing this one for a while and still think this isn't hardware related (lots of Nexus 5 users seeing this on KK as well).
My latest theory, which I have yet to disprove, is that the GPS data downloaded from some cell towers (this is the A in AGPS) is either wrong, or is somehow getting corrupted.
When this happens to me, turning on airplane mode immediately restores a quick and persistent lock. And using GPS Status to reset/erase the AGPS data returns normal operation... for a while.
It's like the initial fix info is fighting with the actual GPS readings. As soon as you turn off the cell towers, or clear the data they are providing, all is well.
I am in T-Mobile fringe area and see it fairly often. So far it has always cleared up by trying the above.
This is am interesting theory. I will check it out a bit. Most interesting is the idea that the agps data structure may be slightly different for kitkat v ICS, and that it may also be different for TMO. The main idea supporting this (though purely anecdotal) is that it does happen on both my tmo Xs but neither of my VZW Xs.

[Q] Is anyone else seeing this issue with Assist Driving?

Hi, I hate to just jump into a new forum with a "cry for help", but I have been trying to get to the bottom of this issue and someone suggested that I post about it here. I am wondering if anyone has seen the following issues or has any insight into what might be the cause and/or a solution?
I apologize in advance for being long winded, but I am hoping the more infor I provide the more likely someone will be able to help me.
Since I got my (original) Moto X in December the driving mode worked most of the time. It wasn't until somewhere between or around the contextual services update and the subsequent Assist update that I noticed the problem, it could have been there before, but i became very aware of it once I noticed that my assist was not "learning" my cars bluetooth as described in the update. Since then I have noticed that assist recognizes when I am driving 1/3-1/2 the time at best. I have gone through motorola tech support and they tried clearing all related data, reinstalling apps and even a factory reset, nothing eliminated the problem for more than a day or so. They replaced my phone despite me insisting it's not a hardware issue. New phone has the same symptoms. Here are the symptoms and what I have tried.
-When it works it takes 1-5 minutes usually, it used to kick in within seconds of being in motion.
-Works >80% of the time if i go somewhere first thing in the AM after it's been charging or after a power cycle.
-Works ~50-75% of the time if I begin to drive again after it works once so long as it's after a fairly short stop.
-Fails to recognize driving 75-90% of the time if I have been in one place for a long period of time (ie after leaving work or running an errand after being home most of the day)
-Toggling "talk to me" under assist driving options while driving sometimes gets it to kick in.
-Opening google maps will kick it in sometimes as well.
-When it's not working I've had my wife watch it in the car and it will show the location services icon in the top as though it is checking, but not kick on.
-I am not using any task killers, I have tasker installed, but I have deactivated it.
I have been trying all kinds of different scenarios to isolate what the problem is so if there is anymore info i can provide to help make it clearer I probably have it so please ask.
Thanks for any help you can provide.
-Kev
You're describing my phone exactly except I can get Drive Assist to turn on every time if I use the app called GPS Status before I start driving. I think it has something to do with the GPS.

Exchanging seems futile, perhaps 4.4.2 will help but that's just blind hope which is worthless
Here is a link to the other XDA thread. I still need to update and link the Moto Support thread too.

Overheating to the point of possible injury

So I will preface with the fact that I'm on my second s6 edge 64GB. The first one had same issues.
Essentially 80% of the time this phone functions and works with no problem still the best phone I've ever used. However, it will heat up randomly, or so I thought, to the point of the first one burning me and leaving red marks on my hands. This is what prompted the first exchange.
Now this one is doing the same. It seems to be triggered when I enable wifi but I haven't been able to pin point exactly what it is. It also seems to get really bad when I have it on the charger.
Attached you can see the result of the worst it's gotten.
Anyone else having overheating issues like this?

I use wifi all the time and actually leave wifi on all day long. Never had this issue. If you are having the same issue with two phones, you should check out apps you installed.
Definitely get it back to stock even if you have to reset and see if the same issue exists. if it does then I would get with Samsung again for another replacement
As someone who is on their 3rd phone for factory defects, I can tell you my 2nd one was MUCH hotter than any of the other ones. I'm not sure what causes it, but it seemed hardware related.

The only time mine gets THAT hot (to the point of triggering the cool down mode even), is if I'm tethered, and charging, and even then it's hit or miss. If I start doing stuff on the phone at the same time though, then it'll ramp up quickly. It actually shut down skype on me yesterday doing that, but I was pushing it pretty hard. Skype on the phone, charging, and hotspot to the PC downloading a 2 gig file. Normal wifi tho, no issues on my end.
Might be go to do with the kernel for WiFi. Maybe you can get a replacement with a different variant?

You could always download CM Security off the market and it will analyze what's causing your phone to heat up. Sorry if that wasn't helpful. I use that app daily to keep my phone freed up and secured.

The edge was designed and intended to be used as a clothes iron.
(Disclaimer: I take no responsibility if you use it as one and it causes a fire)
After tons of trial and error I don't have it happen almost all all now that I use smart wifi toggle app. Think wifi in a weak signal area also was to blame. It was constantly trying to connect and reconnect. Also, most recently it got hot, but not to the extreme, when I started looking at theme store again. So wifi issues and or theme store are contributors.

My phone vibrates for no 'reason'

Greetings all,
I have a new Note5 and overall I like it.
As you might expect I have been working feverishly to find up to date app solutions for my usage model and that will work on an unrooted device. I despise all that conspire to force this upon us! Anyway I have been testing loads of apps and somewhere along the way something has been set to vibrate to indicate something. It is happening at fairly random intervals and nothing shows on screen or in the pull down that accounts for it.
I have looked for events that are pending, past due, etc. I don't get many texts. So, it isn't that. I have even turned on airplane mode which should prevent any kind of updaes or pushes that might trigger an notice.I have checked all of the apps I am using and none are set to vibrate only. From the initial turn on of this phone I have run package disabler pro for Samsung. Using a basic list from this xda thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/note5/general/guide-bloating-touchwizzing-note-5-t3184563. I have restarted the phone several times as well
Can anyone suggest some kind of system monitor/logging app that I can load that will allow me to find out which application is triggering this? Is there some other way I can find out what is triggering this event? I expect that a logging app will eat battery more but on a temp basis that would be ok.
Thanks all and here's to someone finding a way for us to root our notes without messing up our warranty and secure payment...
p
If you are talking about how it vibrates when you first pick it up for seemingly no reason, then that's a feature. It's to let you know you have notifications. It's called smart alert, you can disable it in the gestures menu.
vibrate (and sound) for 'no reason'
Thanks _MetalHead_
But no. This happens when it is sitting undisturbed. I will check and turn off that feature if it isnt already so it isnt adding to the confusion.
If I didnt say, I find no idication of active alarms or notifications.
P
Do you have any Bluetooth devices connected? I had a smart watch with my S5. Every time it connected or disconnected, the phone would vibrate. This was especially annoying when I left the watch in the bedroom while sitting in the living room with my phone. Every few minutes it would connect/disconnect and the phone would vibrate.

Not clear if this is contributing. Will turn BT off to be certain.
Actually, I think I can say for certain no. This has happened in airplane mode.
That is why I am looking for a system logging application or some equivalent method.

Yeah, I re-read your OP, and noticed you said it was happening in airplane mode.
The S-Pen suggestion above seems worth pursuing.
Good luck!
I have the same problem. It would just randomly vibrate. I think is something to do with Google notifications.
