Amount of RAM and "ROM" - Galaxy Ace S5830 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Moin moin
I just noticed (and saw on wiki) that our ace has 384MB RAM and 512MB "ROM"
i put togetzer the numbers i had: system + data + cache = always around 400MB. What is the rest used for? i mean 100MB are 100MB if you know what i mean.
same with RAM. is it used by some kind of ramdisk or what is it used for? cuz we just have ~276MB. Also more than 100MB going "nowhere"
I read somewhere that some ram is used for GPU. true?
Thanks in advance and wish a nice sunday

Ace has 512MB ram..almost a half of it is used up by the system
I got transformed into a potato while writing this post..

There's system, data, cache, boot, binaries, a lot of partitions (including efs), the device's hardware controllers, etc. That's where 512 MB run off to.

*384 MB

Ace have 330MB RAM - when the kernel boots they is an info about it in dmesg, but only ~280MB is alivbe for the user, other is reversed for the GPU (mostly), audio processing and etc.

Memory of ACE
In my opinion you don't be worrie with the Mb Ram it's appear or not. be worrie with ROM,
The ROM is like an HD, and like you now the system android it's based on Linux, so like every system linux you have on less 3 partitions, and 1 of them have a type Swapp. and if this partition be small if the Ace don't have Mb Ram, he go to the partition Swapp use the Mb that's in fault.
So see the differences.
Ram 330+ Rom 512 or
Ram 330 + Rom (1st partition 250+ 2nd partition 150 + Swap 100)
Ram 330 + Rom (1st partition 350+ 2nd partition 150 + Swap 12)
and don't forget you have the micro SD with memory extra.
in my point of view this option is the best Ram 330 + Rom (1st partition 250+ 2nd partition 150 + Swap 100) because you have more memory to complement at RAM.

I'm not sure if it is possible, but if it is, than kfazz (developer of the JB for Droid) maybe could help you.
I believe it is because the kernel reserves some ram for the hardware components. So the device has 256MB, but Android can only use 226 or so.
Fine I Tried to port ICS to OG droid Its working smooth fast & bug free

MiniCM10 questions

Hi guys, I've just installed miniCM 4.0.2 on my friend's x8: this is great, you've made this old 2.2 crap run like hell! I really want to thank all devs for this great job. And I have 4 questions:
- In future releases will kernel be updated via MiniCM Updater or there'll always need to flash tft via flastool?
- Is there a way to flash new kernels with cwm and/or without a PC/mac?
- Reboot issues on 4.0.2 stable can depend on kernel?
- Are these just ram/too many bkgrd procs issues that I can solve using a mount partition?
Kernels cant be flashed via our phone presently...(it might be possible in the future)
sent from my phone using hands and brain...
---------- Post added at 04:44 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:42 PM ----------
Also for other doubts you can post them in the minicm q&a thread or have a chat with them on irc.
I dint use minicm10 so cant help you presently...

no,no,no(oxoydo is same as naajb),maybe(dont use too much apps)
Sent from my E15i using xda app-developers app
Thanks I'll post there for minicm specific.
For now I'll stick with flash tool... Hope to see an integrated solution soon.
If you want a fast, stable, NO LAGS and NO reboots...
Do what I did.
I tested minicm for a month now.
Best solution for me is:
1. SWAP 128mb with swappiness 60
2. KSM on
3.Purging assets on
4. Zram off (zram for some reason, lags and crashes my system)
5. Limit backround processes to 4
6. Force 2d rendering on
7.Disable HW overlays on
8. OC to 748 mhz with smartass 2
9. surface improvement ONLY color banding (without blur effect)
10. 16 bit transaprency
11. Entropy seeder
12. A2SD with dalvik cache on sd
13. Sd cache --> 512 kbs
My antutu score is 3911
Best so far...

Hello, on MiniCM10 (nightly - 31.12.2012) I have got 3924 points with similar configuration with some differences:
- 256 MB swap partition (swappiness 60);
- OC 768 MHz with Smartass v2 and undervolted;
- SD cache default (not changed).
Like above, no lags and reboots. Very fast.

how change swap size? And sd?

Better to use swap partition (create via pc "minitool partition home edition")
-swap partition is faster than swap file(a little bit)
-swappiness above 40~60 can decrease sdcard life.
-if u use swap so disable compcache in cyanogen settings(speeds up & make phone responsible.
-overclock more than 729mhz can harm our chipset

Yes percentage
For kernel Swappiness 100 means : no difference between ram & swap partition , so whole system will slow down
For kernel Swappiness 0 means : swap partition should not be used at all!
#higher swappiness means more active swap( effects SD life)
#app swapper2 is a good option to controll swap!

Where do I set all these settings?
Is it all under performance section? Can't find all of them there.
Thanks for info anyway I'll try it out for shure.
Btw: is it a class 6 microSD enough? Tested with ubuntu is 5.7 mb/s writing and 19.8 mb/s reading
razgoth said:
Numbers 5,6 and 7 are in the Developers Settings or something called like that (in the System Settings). 5 and 7 you have to check after every reboot.
Number 13 You can use via third party apps (for example SD Speed Increase).
Number 11 at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1987032 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2009217.
Swap and a2sd are native functions of ROM/kernel (numbers 1 and 12).
MicroSD class 6 is absolutely minimum for Swap, but it should works.

1. SWAP 128mb with swappiness 60
--- I had a 256 Mb swap partition but I haven't set any swappiness (where to set it BTW?)
2. KSM on
-- ok
3.Purging assets on
-- ok
4. Zram off (zram for some reason, lags and crashes my system)
-- ok
5. Limit backround processes to 4
-- left it default 'cause it's annoying to check every reboot
6. Force 2d rendering on
-- ok
7.Disable HW overlays on
-- left it off 'cause it's annoying to check every reboot
8. OC to 748 mhz with smartass 2
-- OC and UV just freeze my phone and forced reboots, so I left values to default.
9. surface improvement ONLY color banding (without blur effect)
-- ok
10. 16 bit transaprency
-- ok (default)
11. Entropy seeder
-- used this (new installation method) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=36235699&postcount=462 and this was a real treat: this is by far the best improvement in performance ever (OC is nothing compared to this)
12. A2SD with dalvik cache on sd
-- dc2sd is working ok
13. Sd cache --> 512 kbs
-- the app permitted a minimum of 1024 as 1st step so I went for it and set on boot: ok
thanks for suggestions razgoth... especially entropy seeder (great)
can you tell me just one thing more: where to set swappiness?
I'll upgrade to a class10 sd asap, but for the moment is more than ok (coming from 2.1 stock **** now seems flying)

I play high end games like fifa12 or realracing2 on x8 & I never needed 3GBs for swap!!!!!!
128mb is enough man
Swappiness depends to your usage (60 is android's default value ,higher is not recommanded by me it just slows down{our RAM memory's speed is 500mbs comparing to sdcard it might be 100X faster so using higher swappiness slows down alot }
For gaming swappiness 40-60 is good when just wanna multi tasking a value between 10-40 is good & enough
#swappiness is actually telling you how active is your swap partition

if you're running JB platforms, i recommend you to apply 256MB of swap partitions,,
then use class10 SDcard instead (set the swappiness to 100)
it boost the performance :victory::angel:

Any one wants a free roehRamexpander??
this how you set the roehsoft ram expander.
first press the menu button on your device
and select the "SWAPall! off" until you see the you're "VMEM" to zero .
Then set the swappiness to 60-30
now the MINfreekb to "1024kb"
set the drive cache to 4096-6017
activate the hyper mode
do not activate the bad kernels
and set the SWAP size to 100MB to 4GB if you want
you will see the great result!!!
i've tested this on samsung galaxy V
sony experia Z3
and cherry mobile topaz (local phone brand in PH)

Search for jb odex,it should provide some extra space.
Try using minicm10,or jellybean by davee, they are most developed roms.
Btw. odex won't work with any davee's rom or with based on it (so probably all roms from yari too). For me litecm10 is great, it's just lighter minicm10. It's usable but only if you are not going to listen to music from phone, 4.1+x8+music=lags everywhere. But if you want jb look and fast rom just wait some time for optimus nexus me v6 - I've seen screens on facebook and it will be very very jelly
The best way to increase free space:
- drop every sh!t from the rom
- odex it
- remove all languages from the rom
- check how many mb used in /system and compile the kernel with new partition sizes
You can gain 20-25 mb after removing the languages (go into the minicm10 faq thread, I wrote earlier how to do it), you also gain another 40-50 mb additional space after changing the gigantic latinime and trebuchet to any normal sized app and removed the trash (wallpapers, ringtones, etc...)
You lost some space on /system after odexing, but you win lot of space on /data.
You can shrink the /system partition size in the kernel config to make bigger /data partition (and remove the /recovery partition, this is useless, only 10 mb wasted space).
If you do these steps, you can get free space on /data partition up to 250 mb.

increase ram using SDcard????

As you know all the apps are getting bigger and bigger and Xperia so with it's poor memory of can't handle all of the apps.
Recently I have some bad time with the ram memory (see the attachment)
I read about an app called "ROEHSOFT RAM Expander (SWAP)" it's paid app that use partition from sdcard on ram and it needs a kernal that support swap.
Does anyone tried that app ??
Is there any chance of a hardbrick??
Device : C5303
ROM : Official CM13
Kernal: helium v24.
Thanks in advance
I don't recommend, this will brick your sd card more soon than natural time

No you won't get hardbricked but you'd be doing yourself a deservice as the act of using SWAP is CPU intensive and will degrade your SD Card to a large extent due to many r/w operations that are required.
