Still foggy about Kernels and ROMs.
I recently installed 3.0.36_HydraCore_v5.34 kernel on my GT-N700 which was already running ICS 4.0.4 Baseband version N7000XXLS1 and it seems very stable.
However, I wanted to try the Speedmod JB ROM from Cursed4Eva and saw that it required installing a supplied kernel first. I assumed this is because the kernel and ROM have been developed together for compatibility. (Not sure if I assume correctly or if I'm using the correct terminology).
It all worked fine until I tried to re-install the HydraCore kernel after which the phone wouldn't boot. (I recovered easily using a Nandroid backup with ROM Manager).
My question is, is it always the best practice to install the recommended kernel (if any) when flashing a new ROM and not to try re-installing say, the Hydracore afterwards? The HydraCore claims to be compatible with any ROM but either it isn't compatible with the JB ROM or I'd doing something wrong (more likely).
Any advice would be most appreciated.
Trevor
I don't know what is a speedmod jb rom.
but if it's based on the latest samsung stock touchwiz jellybean rom, the hydracore is not compatible with it. current safe kernel is only philz xxls2/xxls7. If the phone is not booting the boot into recovery and flash the rom again
---------- Post added at 06:54 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:53 PM ----------
hydracore is compatible with most of the roms except the Samsung JB touchwiz as the kernel sources are not released as of yet. Once it does, dev will make it compatible for it too
Thank you. That makes sense. I still have a lot to learn.
Trevor
PS I would have hit thnks but can't see the button on my screen.

Hello guys,
I currently try to upgrade a froyo phone to the stable CM9 rom.
Whenever I am flashing the cm9 through CWM 2.5.1.2 (downloaded through rom manager) the phone shuts down while flashing and then it is stuck in a bootloop.
Here is what I am doeing:
useing Darkys v9.2 Resurrection edition. Then I am on:
-> Firmware 2.2.1
Baseband: I9000XXJPY
Kernel: 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #Voodoo_stable_5.4
Build: Darkys v9.2 Extreme Edition
then I am donwloading CWM 2.5.1.2 thrugh rom manager and in CWM I want to flash following zips:
Devil3_0.71_i9000_CFS_BLN_CMC_20120609
cm-9.0.0-galaxysmtd
gapps-ics-20120429-signed
the Kernel (Devil3) flashes finde.. when I am flashing cm9 then the phone restarts in the middle of the flashing process and hangs in a bootloop.
What am i doeing wrong?
You have to flash a Gingerbread rom with Gingerbread bootloaders first. Then flash CM9. When you flash CM9 from Gingerbread, the phone will restart once. Just flash CM9 again and you're good to go.
Why son't you flash CM10? It's newer and stable enough for daily use.

Thanks I will flash CM7 and after that CM9 then.
I personally use CM10 but this phone is the one from my aunt and I just want a stable rom for her because if something doesn t work (like maybe in the current CM10 alphas) then I have to look after the phone again.
Wait your on froyo you need to Odin darkyrom ressurection v10 or gingerbread one that flash cm no need for cwm darky comes with it

In my case I tried CM 7.2 and CM9.0 and after flashing (in both cases) my phone goes into a loop... finally I reinstalled Gingerbread.
I made both flash using the guidelines in CM Wiki.
I reccomend you to flash JVU with repartition. That will install your bootloaders and Cf-Rooting it, you will be able to flash both CM7 or CM9, via CWM
DarkyromResurrection is jvu based but comes with root already less hassle its how I did it

If you want stability you better flash some GB rom, not ICS. If your aunt doesn't care about speed (not that GB is that slow...) then GB is the best choice, in my opinion. More stability and better battery.
ICS is runs perfectly stable now if you select the right rom

Which is best and safe kernel to flash the JB rom's ..HydraCorev6 or Philz kernel ???
both are safe. best or not depends upon personal preference.
---------- Post added at 06:59 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:58 PM ----------
if you like tweaking your phone for performance, the hydra else if you like me, who likes t stock feel then philz
HydraCore
Is HydraCore compatible with all the JB ROMs that have come up. i am on JB Rocket ROM v1 which has a kernel already i guess. how does flashing hydracore gonna be any different from what i already have. p.s: i had flashed Philz before flashing JB RR V1.
hydracore won't work with that but the v6 beta works with a few out there but not the stock jb
I am on ICS 4.0.4 Stock ROM; I flashed 3.0.36_Hydracore_v5.34 (screenshot attached)
and now my Gnote is showing only 799 MB ram available in RAM Status.
How can I get back my total RAM ?
Also I want to know Can I flash stable custom ROMs like CyanogenMod 9.1.0
or nightly jellyBin ROM safely without loosing my apps and settings?
Please Help
Thanks in Advance
different kernels show different ram values, some is used by the system so you can never see full
stock shows 808
notecore shows more than that... its normal
---------- Post added at 08:08 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:08 PM ----------
no.. you need to make a full backup of your apps and data before installing custom roms

Hello everyone, i've been searching and have found some information but i'm a bit worried with all the unsafe kernels talk so please bear with me if i ask something obvious or that has been asked before.
I flashed my phone to the Open Germany stock ICS release a few months back and then rooted it, but now i want to flash a JB rom and i see you have to go back to GB first.
What im using right now:
Android version: 4.03
Baseband version: N7000XXLPT
Kernel Version:
3.0.15-N7000XXLPY-CL474507
[email protected] #3
SMP PREEMPT Fri May 4 04:49:06 KST 2012
Build number: IML74K.XXLPY
But im still a bit confused.
Anything in particular i need to watch out for or do i just flash stock GB using PC Oding to the note?
To what version of GB should i downgrade?
Thanks in advance.
Its not required to flash gb rom to get jb
You need to be on safe kernel to flash jb rom
So now you are on ics, then flash a safe kernel like philz or hydracore and then you can flash jb rom

Search for lpy kernel here
Download and flash it
And then you can flash jb rom

You can now flash the jb rom through cwm
Hi,
I've followed the guide to install the speedmod kernel on my Galaxy Note on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1673072, using odin, but I have a problem: after Odin said that all was good, the phone is unable to reboot and for 5-6 seconds stay with the screen with the "yellow triangle" and then shut-down.
How can I solve this problem?Or come back to original kernel?
Please help me!!

You 100 % sure it was ICS? Install the rom you were on again using odin. Its will put back the original kernel. Just dont wipe while on ICS stock kernel.

I've check with my brother that has the same original rom (he has a Samsung S2)...and I discover that I had Android 4.1.2 that means JB! :/
Have I to install the JB rom with odin in the same way?
Thanks a lot for your help!

I've done what you said and ALL WORKS NOW!!
Thank you so much for your help!
Can you suggest me a good rom to install, without doing same errors!? (maybe this could be my last question! )
In this case you just have to flash the JB Speedmod kernel the same way you flash previous one. The phone is not booting because of having an ICS kernel on JB rom.

If you want all the Samsung features then check AryaMod rom.
If you are OK with AOSP, cm 10.2 or omni 4.4 are great roms. It's up to you to try and decide which one suits you the best.
This time for rooting and cwm, use Philz kernel. Methods and explanation in his thread in the Original Development Section.

Sure, I'm very ok with AOSP and I was thinking about cm 10.2!
Please, clear me up if first of all I have to install the Philz kernel or the rom cm 10.2! (that wasn't the last question! )
First root using Philz kernel.. Then back up your efs folder. Then flash the rom or your choice. Custom rom can only be flashed using cwm recovery.
AryaMod v3 is very good and smooth stock LTA based TW rom. I'm on it since it was issued. As the owner set v4 will be issued in few days. You can try it.
