Title says it all, what's the census? I realize I'm asking in the Note forum, so I expect bias. I'll also post this in the m8 forum also.
Also, I'd be purchasing both off contract. m8 would be cheaper as it's older. Figure I could get the m8 for ~400-450 and the Note 4 off contract @ $699.
Main concern with Note:
1) Size. I had a Note 2 and got along alright with it. This one is a little bigger.
2) I don't like TouchWiz. To clarify more, I find the TouchWiz on the Note series a "scaled" up version of the Galaxy S phones and doesn't take advantage of the larger screen. Multi DPI apps help. So, this would require AOSP mods or ROMS. What's the Dev community like in comparison?
Main concern with m8:
1) Camera
2) No removeable battery.
3) already out of date?
Also, if anyone has general opinions who've used both, please lemme know!
Thanks Guys

In my opinion, you should figure out if you can handle the size first. If you cannot, then go no further and get a smaller phone.
TouchWiz is still Touchwiz although they scaled back a little from previous versions.
The things that blow me away with this phone (coming from Nexus 5):
Beautiful screen - best I have ever seen
Awesome camera quality
Battery life is incredible! Especially considering the screen size. Not uncommon to get 24-36 hours on one charge with proper tweaks.
Fast charge is amazing! I can charge my phone within an hour and not have to worry about it for a day.
Fingerprint scanner - I don't think I can be without it anymore. Works great with Lastpass password management which I use heavily.
Things I do not like:
Speaker on the back (not a deal breaker but why ever put a speaker on the back!!)
The things I do not like would have been longer which would have included software and Touchwiz issues but I have addressed all of them with root, ROM and hacks. I have to say this is the best phone I have ever touched but you have to be able to handle the size.
I have a M8 but I've never used a Note 4. But in this scenario, I'd choose the Note because it has the latest hardware and there's only a few more months before the next gen One will be released. (Probably Q1 2015)
If you like HTC's hardware and Sense skin but want a screen as big as the Note, you should wait on the One Max aka One Prime.

I believe the T-Mobile HTC M8 version doesn't support LTE Band 2. An with most Edge to LTE direct upgrades being Band 2. I would then go with the Note 4.

Sorry, I should have commented that the m8 I'd purchase is the verizon developer edition.
Either or. Both are great phones in their own respects. Ended up demoting my m8 to personal music player/backup phone and note4 is daily driver.
Note 4!!!
Yes, I'm bias, who cares. Definitely go with the Note 4. Personally I can't stand HTC's ....cosmetically pleasing frame, but man.....it does not compare to Samsung. Especially against the Note 4. HTC's have always failed for me.
*** Also, please do keep in mind that even though you don't like TW, you don't have to use it!!!!! Things like this shouldn't be a determining factor LOL....I just don't get how people (not you, just speaking in general) complain about something they can fix! ****
So please people (in general) stick with stuff like...."NOT having a removable batter, SD etc..." consider those kind of things that really MATTER! Not the UI where you have options to change it! :good:
I wish I could say that you can't go wrong with either....but sorry I can't LOL.
Plus, the M8 isn't even in the same league.
One of the main reasons for me switching to T-Mobile from AT&T was the ability to root and do virtually whatever we want with our devices. I've been noticing that the S-Pen on the T-Mobile Note 4 is easier to pull out than the AT&T Note 4 (which has quite the resistance). I'm not sure why this is the case, but are any of you experiencing this? I noticed the S-Pen in the T-Mobile Note 4 has little room to move around in and is tad bit loose, though doesn't fall out easily; the AT&T variant is quite snug and is harder to fall out.
I can see an att store from my apartment complex. I go in all the time because we have to use uverse at my apartment complex so all my cable boxes and my wifi box are from att.
I have played with the att note 4 there. Mostly to look at the bloatware.
The att note 4 and the tmobile note 4 are physically identical.
Interesting. I had the att version before and felt the S-Pen was definitely harder to pull out than the tmobile version. I can understand what the OP is saying. I never liked how ATT boxed the phones. Its like give and take. You're gonna find something in all the carriers, wouldn't say nothing is perfect, but hey, I can understand where the OP is coming from.

After giving it some thought and looking at a friend's international Note 4. Realized that the S-Pen should not be fitting too tight in the slot; the paint chips off. I would believe T-Mobile Note 4 is assembled just right.
This should answer your question,
http://forums.androidcentral.com/samsung-galaxy-note-4/454446-s-pen-loose-phone.html
Unfortunately, its a typical Samsung quality control issue. Most of us are used to it, get over it.
What if they sent us the exynos variants? Since the note 7 replacement would get resolved faster that way, opposed to exchanging every battery in the note which would technically make every device a refurbished, it would take longer that way and would devalue the device...faster way to satisfy customers is sending the varients that aren't exploding which are the exynos varients...
Whats your feedback and thoughts on this!?
Thanks in advance!

Not a chance. The carriers need their bloat, and will not recode everything for a different chipset within 2 weeks.

This guy is in the US so I assume it was a Snapdragon model.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQQOiilJwJ0
@RidinNerdy The replacements will be the same as we have now.
Recall through Samsung and not carriers
What if we send our phones through Samsung instead then to the carriers? Some people in the US bought the phone unlocked and Samsung is offering their own exchange program not for those people but just in general.
Here is the link to Samsungs announcement of the exchange program: http://news.samsung.com/us/2016/09/02/samsung-establishes-u-s-product-exchange-program-galaxy-note7/
The exynos models were the ones that caught fire...not the snapdragon.

Yeah but we don't wanna think that, we want the exynos because they have root(ignorance is bliss[emoji18]) , plus it would make sense for them to give us an unlocked version because if i have tmobile version and i exchange it for theirs im sure they are not carrying the T-Mobile/Sprint/Verizon/at&t varients so ill get a debloated note 7 ***PROFIT*** THANK ME LATER!

being in US doesnt mean he couldn't have Exynos, but AFAIK the problem is batteries made in Korea, not cpu etc. Probably majority of batteries made in Korea would go to Exynos equipped models for local markets and it seems most of Tmo phones are made in China for example, but the problem is most may not mean all and if they were short of chinese batt. in China, they could have shipped some from Korea and If I had to guess, that could be reason for global recall, they may not be 100% sure if some faulty batteries from Korea didn't end up in China made US models. I wonder if there is a program able to read batt info, if such info exist. It blows my mind, that all this could be avoided if only there was simple access inside, like on older models.
If they switched the processors, I would bail out getting the Note 7 altogether. I had a Note 10.1, 12.2 and note 5 all with exynos processors and all of them couldn't handle heavy activity after a certain period of time. Putting the snapdragon processor in the Note 7, S7 and S7edge was smart of Samsung.

I like how you think especially since I thought the same way. It seems they are protecting their battery source as they don't want to "out" them. I agree a simple app to detect what battery you have would make sense. They are gonna refurbish the returned phones somehow

If you really want to do that, just return your TMo for a refund and then buy the Exynos version from Samsung or a retailer who carries it.
Personally, I prefer the Snapdragon one, that's why I bought from a carrier.

I have to disagree.
I especially wnt the exynos processor.
Things to consider:
I've had the same models, but my 12.2 pro is lte, so it has the snapdragon 800 processor.
10.1 and 12.2 Wi-Fi were 32bit processors. Those exynos models were behind qualcomm snapdragon at the time, and their scores showed it.
Note 5 was 64 bit exynos, and was faster than 810 snapdragon counter part
808 snapdragon was hexacore and as well, slower.
Hard to compare them, reason they went with qualcomm was qualcomm came out with lte embedded, so it didn't need another module draining battery. Last year's note 5 came worldwide Exynos, and if you compare last year's exynos to this year's snapdragon (hard reset Note 5 vs hard reset Note 7) you would be hard to believe the snapdragon 820 is faster. As a matter of fact it's not, except on paper. I've seen the exynos 88xx blow away the snapdragon 820.
I for one would love it if they replaced them. I'm a Note fanboy. I've had every note except the original, and they've all gotten better, with my exception being they note 7 in terms of software. This is the first time I feel let down
I've had the S7 Edge for the last 5 months, I loved the screen and especially the battery life. Samsung has released a product that just wasnt ready. I don't have a surface thermometer, but I'm being I could bake an egg on this. I don't feel it most of the time, because i have it in a case (platinum, which by the way covers both edges of the screen so you can't use any edge option, and cuts off some letters on web pages) but there's just something wrong this year.
Samsung has started to listen to... the media and websites instead of consumers. Websites complained it wasn't like their beloved Apple, all glass and Prone to break or shatter. They took the IR away. Sealed their battery, made their cameras 4:3 by default, took all their little options away that websites thought werw too much (but could all be turned off if not needed, such as eye scrolling, motion swiping, photo formula text editing (check the note 4 advertising about taking a photo of a paragraph and being able to move it around including the formula)), it just doesnt make sense.
Back to the subject, to me, and i am currently using both, the exynos 7420 found in the note 5 with the gpu mali T760 seems faster in real life than the snapdragon 820 with adreno 530. I suspect after seeing as much that the exynos 8890 in the international version. ( 930FD ) is faster.
Sorry I'm just so disappointed and blown away by how hot this is. And performance is bad all over for me

It looks like THEY were the battery source and it was put into 70% of the phones released.
"Samsung SDI supplied 70 percent of the batteries fitted into the 2.5 million estimated Galaxy Note 7 units that have so far landed in consumer hands and stores. The other 30 percent of batteries have been provided by Chinese battery maker ATL."

See you know what your talking about these other guys don't, they don't know that the In-House processor works better because it's theirs just like apples works wonders on their phone because it's their own, better battery on the exynos and root is available aswell...smh..i want exynos
Sent from my LG-H830 using Tapatalk
Technically it was always QUALCOMM that had their processors rootable, Samsung had theirs under lock and key, lots of developers were asking Samsung to release notes on their exynos as they werent following the "rules" of openness. International versions always had the exynos, and most Wi-Fi models. It's just we got really lucky last year because of the 810 overheating. This year's model didn't have "liquid cooling" that the s7 and s7 edge had, and it's just... It's almost like I'm using a knock off phone.
I've never considered going back to a previous model of any phone. That said this was not Samsung's first "dud". Their S2 on Sprint was an exynos and it was a beast. On T mobile it was a TI OMAP I think 4430. Let's just say it showed me back then how awesome it (exynos) was.
Everyone who has used a note always gets a Better version of the S*. This year it seems we have gone back....1,2,3 year's
? And I'm not talking about the denotation.
People long forgotten...
http://www.xda-developers.com/samsung-aware-of-exynos-documentation-issue/
To this day developers are still asking...
My take they are releasing the QC versions in the US because they don't want to give that documentation needed. Everyone keeps saying some underhanded anti-competitive deal, but if that's the case then how does Apple do it? Why they do it with the Note 5, and why wasn't there hoopla when that happened? The promise was made in the US, and magically we stopped getting Exynos the following year. When they released a Exynos version everyone asked for documentation they switched us back to QC. We will always see QC as long as we remember they promised documentation. They only give us the ones for Panda boards last I remember and 32 bit only.

Sure you can get the blue international unlocked version but it would only work on GSM providers like T-Mobile or AT&T. No CDMA so won't work on Verizon.

Same colour options options here in Southern Europe. I have also opted for the black. My SGS8+ is also black so I wanted a change but the maple gold is rather 'bling bling' on a mobile that size plus the camera set up is all black and not in matching gold as previous iterations have been.
My choice would be a deep burgundy but................:crying:
Black it is. No matter as its going in a case for protection then in a shocksock attached to my trousers so I can't drop it nor get pick pocketed.
Lot of money.............serious cash!

I am right there with you...im so PISSED about the color options here. Canada is even getting BLUE. like WTF. so far I only seen the unlocked option in black. I really don't want black and the orchid grey I'm not to sure about. I heard its really different looking then the s8 orchid grey so I might have to see in person. I was also thinking since the back is really the biggest difference, buying a blue back and having it put on. just not sure how I would keep the ip68 (if I can get the special adhesive). if I knew they would eventually release it in blue in the US, I would wait it out. I wish I could kick Samsung in the balls right now.

How will will it work on the GSM's? I have t mobile and my consider this but now sure how exactly well it will work(drop calls, LTE, etc). I never used an international phone in the US before. It will work like any other handset. The Note 8 international version (SM-N950F) will support T-Mobile LTE bands 2,4 and 12 so 4G will work just fine. The only potential downside is that it won't support the higher frequency band 66 which T-Mobile is currently rolling out in large cities to deal with network congestion. Another con is VoLTE and WiFi calling may not work without flashing ROMs or rooting but that's the case for many non carrier handsets. A big upside besides color selection is that the Exynos chipsets in the international Samsung handsets have historically had much better battery life than the Snapdragons in the U.S versions.
And you can definitely get them on Amazon instead of eBay. Just search by model number. For example for the S8+ international version search G955f on Amazon.
Also a big con is your warranty won't be valid in the US. I've never had to use my warranty but it's something to consider

i know from the past that they have a few different unlocked variants. all the ones ending in f will work with LTE.
i just wish i could buy it from Samsung and get the 425 discount since i checked my eligibility today.
Black one for me. Don't like the way the camera stands out like sore thumb on other colors besides black.
Midnight Black for me this time.
I went with the Coral Blue Note7 last time it looked unusual.
Plus we are all going to be using cases, so does the colour really matter nowadays?
What I really want is a transparent phone, like the gameboys back in the day.
Do you guys think I should get a samsung galaxy note 4 to mess around with roms and use it as a media device like a mini tablet?
It seems like there are so many roms for the note 4 and it has a removable battery so can last for a very long time.
Which version is the best for modding and custom roms?

It looks like you are brand new here (junior), boy you have a LOT to catch up with.
I dunno about your knowledge with custom roms, I encourage you to have patience, you need a couple of years to learn.
Best case scenario a few years IF the community will still use old(er) phones which can be modded. Cuz new(er) phones are a b*tch to work on since their bootloaders (a large majority anyway) are LOCKED.
It's VERY hard to get the Exynos variant working with custom roms. You will understand how and why after you will read the forum.
It's easier to work with Snapdragon variant, but (of course there's a but) this version is plagued by the eMMc issue and it's not easy to get a healthy phone.
Batteries - there's only few options to get good quality batteries for the note 4. And they might cost more than you would like to admit.
Google and XDA search can do miracles, go ahead and use them.
Good luck.
ps1: imo you would be better off with note 3 or S3 if the swap removable battery is your thing
ps2: remember the SPen - it will never work on custom rom as originally intended, it's an extra headache in custom roms

Check this forum - Note 4 Snapdragon - you will see which version is more used.
I do not have a source and also I've stopped using the note4.
Original batteries might be found on Samsung dealers locally, if they still have.
Online is more difficult and not so trustful, hence the difficulty reason I've mentioned before.
Don't get any note4 with snapdragon

I say go for it!
I have had a Note 3 since the original days it came out and I am still using it as a dialy driver AND an older one to act as a kitchen timer/clock/music player.
But.. be prepared for heartache! It is hard to find active development but go to the general forum and you can still see some activity. The main thing is do not invest more than you are willing to loose! You can perminantly brick your device and even though you can get one on ebay or other sites, they will stil run you around 100 dollars US.
But if you want a hobby, and like me, want a secondary device, I DO use the SPen as a stylus on the Squid App for taking notes.. and use the Infra-Red blaster as a remote control for the multiple TV's at my job.
So get a Note 3. In fact if I get my Note 4 I just bought up and running, I am willing to seel you my note 3 with 2 batteries and a wall charger.
As for the batteries? I do get some from amazon, and they seem new-ish and last me a good year or so. Buy 2 or 3 and rotate them as needed! That way you will always have power.
Let me know if I can help you on your journey and best of luck to you!
Dave
If you decide to get a Note 4 I recommend not getting the Verizon model as it is a nightmare to mod.
If I might make a different phone recommendation go for a Galaxy Note 3, it has way more support to it and is also easier to mod.
