If that's a fully restorable system, we could swap out the radio image for the one in the OTA update, and the system image could be anything we want, right?
Or will the system image need to be signed for this to work?

Changing the .zip will make it unflashable in stock recovery, unless someone has a key signer for a Droid3 . . . and I'm guessing not Or is this truly something that will work with
Code:
moto-fastboot flashall
However, if an enterprising individual were to flash the stock update/ROM in recovery, then manually flash our radio in fastboot, they might not end up with a brick.
...maybe . . . my recovery is iced, so it won't be me trying
I can't flash the update in recovery :/ otherwise I would try. I do have recovery access though. Wonder if swapping out portions of that xt862 file may be possible..? We need someone with the knowledge!

Just like with the other SBF, do not flash it. Stop thinking about flashing it. Stop thinking about thinking about flashing it. In the best case, you will brick your phone until we get an SBF. In the worse case, the Chinese government is already en route to your location.

Thanks if so!!!
I didn't brick mine, but I'm sure others will be happy to see this.
It was 5.5.959 that was released from VZW and 5.6.890 is the latest leak. What is this? 5.5.1? 5.5.184? Either is significantly earlier than 5.5.959, but the date stamp shows Aug 12, 2011, so I am intrigued. Hopefully the version number just isn't accurate.

Pretty sure the version # is accurate. Either way you should be able to OTA to the latest version if this returns you to stock (which it should).

If it can be flashed through fastboot/RSD it's about as "surefire" as you'll get without access to nvflash. Just don't much around with your Bootloader and you should be fine

OP: Thank you for posting this file, it is the firmware that was pulled from the server that is an unofficial build. So everyone should know that, you will fix your phone but as for now you will be off the upgrade path.
One question - if I put the file "swu.zip" into the root of /sdcard and name it "update.zip", will I then be able to restore to stock from fastboot without using a PC?
If this works, it'll allow me to mod the phone while on the move, but have a get-out-of-jail card to restore to stock at any point. I spend a lot of time commuting, so this would allow me to use my D3 to learn more about android when I'd normally just be using it to watch Family Guy

It's not a web browser link, it's bit more complicated.
Every request needs a special generated samsung request token, and that's a little developer secret.
In reference to the decrypting I'm still stucking a little bit. I can extract it exactly bit to bit and modify the system.img files, thats not the point.
The point is to get the modified files back into a working .img file that can be integrated along with boot.img and all its components to a .tar.md5 file.
If you want, I upload you all of the extracted system files, maybe two brains are better than one.
But I am sure you are smart enough to get your system.img extracted by yourself, since you released your own custom ROM and a tutorial.

Due to FAP Lock.
This happens if your device is brand new or while the first ROM flash, due to the stock disabled setting of OEM Unlock.
Resolve:
#1 - Add your Google Account to your new flashed ROM
#2 - Settings - About Device - Tap 7 times on build number to enable developer options.
#3 - Settings - Developer Options - Enable OEM Unlock - Enable USB Debugging.
#4 - Power Off - Remove Battery - Press Power a few times (to eliminate the rest electricity like on a pc)
#5 - Insert Battery - Boot into Download Mode - Continue with Step #12 (Rooting)
If you still have any trouble, let me know.

I've followed the instructions on how to pull the OTA files for my S5 Active on AT&T (G870A). I have the file as a .zip and it seems to have the right things for an update in the archive. Size is 929MB.
TL;DR - See reply #7 for download link.
My AndroidFileHost account is not for a developer, so I can't upload yet. I've requested access to upload. I'm currently uploading to Google Drive, but it will about an hour until that is completed. I'll follow up tomorrow, but the end is in sight. I'm running 6.0.1 on my S5 Active and it seems to be doing alright. Definitely less bloatware than the 5.1.1 build.
I will post updates to this thread as I have them.
Edit: same bloatware
My ISP keeps taking me offline about 200MB into the upload to Google Drive. Maybe they think I'm torrenting Mr. Robot S2E9 or something. I'll try dropbox next or wait for AndroidFileHost to give me upload rights.
You can split file using WinRAR.
Right click on your file and select "Add files to archive"
In the opened window, give a new name to your to-be-split file (e.g. G870A_6.rar). Under "Compression Method", select "Store".
Input your desired value inside "Split to volumes, bytes" box, about 100-200Mb
Click OK and you're done.

I wouldn't split the files, considering it's a file that needs to be flashed, too many opportunities for corruption.
With that said, I think Dropbox is your best choice. You could also give zippyshare a shot, it's a fairly popular hosting site with straight forward downloads (ie. No misdirection on download buttons, pop-ups, etc).
Edit
Also, thanks a ton for this, I've been waiting and waiting for someone to upload a zip of the Ota for the Active.
I was able to use the desktop Google Drive sync and I believe the file is intact. Uploading via HTTP is not very reliable.
I'm checking the link now before posting it. Should be ready in an hour or so.

I no longer have AT&T, nor have those updates been released as flashable zips, so maybe I don't have an option after all. Lol

You guys can try, my guess is it will fail, I'm in the same boat, think we need to be on pb* for it to flash.
Give it a shot and report back, quite a few people are curious, myself included. Worst case, it'll fail and you have to reboot.

I should add, I would try, but I'm still on of3 and not certain I want to lose root, but you guys already have. If it works, I'll definitely contemplate updating. Good luck!
How would you actually flash this? adb sideload? Put on device and install via recovery? I'm in the same boat and currently stuck on OC5 in Germany without ATT service.

I was on PB5 originally and it wouldn't update. I took an AT&T SIM out of another phone and let it run through the update path. The first thing it went to was PB6 which was 200MB+. The AT&T site mentions that it has to be one of those three to get the update to PH2. After that, the big download started.

I tried that already, filename doesn't really matter. I looked into the files itself and this update is mostly patches from a previous version so unless you're on one of the approved previous versions this probably won't work unfortunately.
Does anyone have any pointers towards the other OTA updates? If I knew I could just order an AT&T Sim card and proceed through them I would extract every single one of them myself and post them here. Unfortunately I don't even know if an AT&T card will do anything useful here in Germany.

I'm glad I at least have root, for those stuck on oj3, I'd be pretty upset. Anybody able to get us a required pb* Ota capture, please do, you'd be a hero!
As of right now, Google hasn't posted the factory images for the P4 and P4XL. I have my P4XL and want to root it to test a few things before I make my decision to return it or not. So, does anyone know of a way to extract the boot.img from this phone or must we wait for the images to drop?
Use payload dumper to extract it, and then patch the image via Magisk and flash that patched image in fastboot.

Did you perform this with success? Does Magisk allow for loading modules and root access?

Can you elaborate? I'm downloading the dumper, but not really sure how to dump files from the phone. Only guide I have found so far is talking about factory images which would defeat the point.
The factory image should be out within the hour, I would just wait.

Oh? I wasn't expecting it to drop until the 24th-ish. If they're supposed to be out today then yeah, I'll just wait. lol.

When you get the dump or from the factory images, let me know of your success/failures with magisk if you take the plunge. How's the weather in Waukesha? Getting cold yet? I grew up in Oak Creek, WI.

Ah crap, you're right. I thought today was the official release date. Carry on, please ignore my last post.
Nice.
If someone manages to pull boot.img I'll try patching and flashing Magisk.

AHH! I know. For some reason I had it in my head that the phone officially releases today. I took the day off work because I wanted to root and set my phone up! Imagine my disappointment when I realized the phone isn't officially released until Thursday.

I actually don't have mine just yet, but I believe the steps I mentioned should work without issue. Sorry I should have clarified that in my OP.

You extract the OTA zip and place the paylod.bin file in the input folder and then run the application. The output files would be in the output folder. I've only tested this on my OnePlus 7 Pro.

Good advice, I'd do the same just in case things go south!
So in the end, it sounds like doing this when the factory images are available would be the best scenario. That way you can fall back to stock if needed.
Still no factory images
