My apologies if someone has already posted this, but i couldn'f find a post that was able to help me.
I had my HTC vivid rooted before updating to ics.
I relocked the bootloader and updated using the ruu.
After the update i unlocked the bootloader and needed some help rooting again.
I tired using the vivid all in one kit(thinking that would be the fastest) from the forum but that just made my phone freeze on the white htc screen.
i just "reinstalled" ics because that was the only way to get my phone to work again (phone works fine now)
So the question- How do i properly root my phone running ics
Someone correct if wrong. I dont think that tool will be compatible with ics. I to have updated to ics and I havent seen a post yet for an easy way to root or re root after upgrading to ics. I hope someone can find a flaw and bring back the one click root, like way back on the incredible with unrevoked.com. plug n click your phone boom all automated.

The easiest way is to use wild child's recovery.

He also provides awesome roms. Just read everything before you do anything!
uh? i dont see the vivid on his site? unless im missing something... whatever happened to just using cwm
You have to register first for the Vivid section to show up.
just got cwm on the phone hope this is helpful to someone else
dl recovery-cwm-vivid-5.5.0.4b2.img (got mine from the vivid all in one)
do the same you would if you were unlocking bootloader
instead of typing the "fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin)
type "fastboot flash recovery recovery-cwm-vivid-5.5.0.4b2.img"
obviously files have to be in the correct area mine are all under c:\
hopefully that helps someone

It is basically the same idea but it is called touch recovery. It also works with gb and ics. Just like poster above said, you have to register to see the vivid section. Just read everything on the process and you will have recovery in no time!

I think it installs root when you install the recovery. You should see superuser when you boot back up after installation.
No go, no superuser and no root either. tried using titan backup as a tester it says i dont have permissions
I guess I had perm root. Did you look in the dev section and try the root file there?
It's in the superguide.

Glad I could help you! Just be careful with updating apps from tb. Try to avoid bringing data from gb to ics because it can cause problems. I would just install apps, you can try apps + data but sometimes it messes with things.
RESOLVED!!!!!
here's how i re-rooted my phone after ics ruu update
Unlock the bootloader following htcdev
dl recovery-cwm-vivid-5.5.0.4b2.img got mine from the vivid all in one tool (located inside the data folder, im sure you can find the file on this forum but i happened to have the all in one tool)
do the same steps you would if you were unlocking bootloader
instead of typing in cmd "fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin"
type "fastboot flash recovery recovery-cwm-vivid-5.5.0.4b2.img"
that will get cwm onto your phone
Next follow this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1416836
skip down to step 2
follow the steps but IGNORE EVERYTHING ABOUT THE PH39IMG.ZIP
just boot into recovery with cwm and install from external sd the vivid_cwm_root ver.2
and voila fin!
this is probably not the most efficient way to do this but this is how i did it
hopefully this is helpful to someone

Would you happen to know about how long it takes to script? I'm just woundering because I hate the new update and would like to root(s-off) and then flash a rom. I liked sense but want vanilla-android. Thanks again for your helpful post. I'm not asking if you know an ETA or anything like that, just from your experience.

Really don't know that info, however if you want to get root but don't want to wait there are other ways to do it. Let me know if you are interested and I will post them up. Consider though it will take longer than it would using the toolkit.
megatronisabeast
I'll try pretty much anything. I've rooted several devices, so findind a new way for another one won't hurt. Only thing that I really would like to do is avoid making a gold card, but if you have to do that I think I will wait for the toolkit. Thanks!! Do you know if it's possible to temp root, flash a kernal with cwm, and then flash a rom?
Here is what you need to do to root your phone, etc.
First thing is to download android sdk:
http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
It will allow you to send files to your phone from your computer-no s-off so can't flash kernel in recovery only fastboot.
While that is downloading if you haven't already you need to unlock boot loader by going to:
http://htcdev.com/
Don't forget to keep the unlock code so if you need to relock your boot loader.
Next, it sounds like you want to flash a custom rom. If so the best one in my opinion is found here:
http://www.wcxxperia-nce.com/index.php
You have to register to see the vivid section.
Once there you will download the zip file, put a copy on your phone, the other copy unzip and place the boot.img and wcx recovery in the same folder that you have the fast boot file that you downloaded earlier from sdk.
Then you put your phone into hboot mode, plug it in to usb port, make sure on phone screen is says fast boot usb in red.
Then open command prompt in your folder with fast boot by clicking shift and the right mouse button.
Type in these commands:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash recovery wcxrecovery.img
After those steps power down phone, unplug from computer, return to hboot, click on recovery, then flash the zip file that you placed on there earlier.
That's it, you got it root and all.
Also if you do use his rom, restart phone 3 times to settle phone in and cycle battery 3 times to make sure everything is working correctly.
Here is a video if you feel overwhelmed to help guide you brought to you by randong!

Hope this has helped you!
You can use wild child's recovery to perm root ics check it site for the video if you need proof

We just need S-OFF so we can simplify this entire thing by using CWM. It's so much easier being able to flash a scripted .zip package in there than dealing with fast boot.

I've never done it myself but it shouldn't be that difficult. I think I'm just spoiled coming from the Inspire - it was rooted, S-OFF'd, and had a few custom ROMs up the within a couple days of its launch. The level of development for that device was extreme from the very beginning.
Sent from my HTC Vivid
True, I still have an Inspire and the development is still booming. I personally just wish HTC would have made the Vivid as dependable as the Inspire, bc my Vivid has all sorts of problems. Turns off randomly, and each time when it turns back on it says "upgrading android" and then it optimizes the apps for ICS. Most of the time it won't flip my pictures(rotate)<--yes auto rotate is on...but all in all HTC went down in quality with the Vivid. Personally this is why I want to root, that way I don't have to worry with HTC screwing up the update.
it does work but i have found that busybox isnt installed/installed correctly and have had to install it from the market for titanium backup to recognize my root.

Here's what i did
using One_S_All-In-One_Kit_v3.5 for all my modding
got token
unlocked bootloaded
didn't flash any recovery
flash a new .img kernel, but i used a boot.img from a zip file (home2wake zip) - don't ask why, i wasn't thinking lol
phone rom was all black, keeps rebooting
i managed to flash recovery, recovery-clockwork-6.0.3.1-m7wls.img
then wanted to restore stock rom
so i downloaded, this rom, http://android-revolution-hd.blogspot.com/p/android-revolution-hd-mirror-site-var.html
flashed zip using recovery
went through the rom custom installation of what i wanted installed.
After that it rebooted and stuck on green htc screen
i can get back into boot loader, but can't load recovery, can't factory reset, any option i select, the screen flash and sends me back to bootloader
rom won't load, can't get into recover, computer not detecting phone
Please help!!!

Sent from my HTCONE using xda premium
you can try to load ADB Fastboot on your PC, then connect your phone via usb, be sure to have all of the drivers.
in bootloader, if it reads FASTBOOT USB, then you can us
fastboot flash recovery (Name of recovery).img
once that is done you should be able to at least get back into recovery....
check the link for recovery file
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2236418
I am no expert, but my guess would be to go back to stock boot / recovery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2236418
Relock your phone: fastboot oem lock
Install the RUU: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2250904
And in the future don't use an All-In-One-Kit meant for another phone (The One S in your case)

Right now when i plug in my phone the computer doesn't detect anything, hopefully the adb can talk to it to flash a new recovery/rom/kernel.

i was using this, all of the recovery on there were for samsung s3/s4/and special edition. so i couldn't get to the recovery. Then i started tweaking around with the extras and flashed a boot.img to a kernel. failed
Android Revolution ROM is not for the sprint htc one. fyi
First you'll need this file http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2250904
Extract to someplace you can find it, maybe the desktop
if you power the phone down then hold the vol - button does it boot into bootloader?
if so make sure you have the htc fastboot drivers installed from htc sync
if your on a windows machine from command prompt navigate to the platform-tools folder
for example
mine is in C:/users/ray/downloads/adt-bundle-windows-x86_64/adt-bundle-windows-x86_64/sdk/platform-tools
in command prompt issue the command
fastboot oem lock
once the bootloader is re-locked
issue the command
fastboot oem rebootRUU
the phone should reboot into a black screen with greenish htc letters
find the setup.exe file from the ruu file and run it.
if all goes well you should be back to stock with a locked bootloader.
good luck

Let this thread be a lesson that 1) don't mess with your phone if you don't know what you're doing and 2) don't flash a GSM ROM on your Sprint phone because it wipes your boot and recovery partition (on GSM phones, it wipes data and system but sprints partitions are different).

Failing after making a bunch of random attempts to do something doesn't constitute learning. Next time you should make sure you actually understand what it is that you are trying to do before you do it, and maybe then you won't end up almost completely wiping your phone clean.
You're lucky that the international One's and Sprint Ones partitions aren't like the Sprint/international S3, or else you would've overrided your bootloader as well and had a brick on your hands.
*First of all, I'm posting here because I haven't had enough posts for the dev section yet..*
So...I've never had any issues rooting and installing ROMs.. not that I've done a TON, but two phones and 3 tablets, so I little ha..
Got my HTC One unlocked and rooted fine with the All-in-one tool, which worked good enough, but when I tried to get a ROM working is when I ran into issues.
I guess I'll tell the main issue first and then explain what happened..
Either only boots to bootloader/fastboot,
OR
Gets stuck on HTC logo and never leaves..
Am I screwed?
What I did that I think effed it...
After getting rooted and running, I tried to install RenovateROM_1.0...kept just randomly stopping and giving an error about "asset failed..." and just booted normally (no ROM)
I googled the hell out of that I tried editing the updater-script like I saw in so many places, and then I screwed up cause it was 3:30am and I was sick of trying.
I was gonna wipe the cache and data before I tried installing again, but I ended up wiping System in there and possibly Dalvik cache as well..
(I know that was stupid now!!!! Feel free to remind me haha..)
And now it's stuck.
If I try install a ROM, it says it completes, but won't boot past fastboot/bootloader.
If I re-flash my TWRP with fastboot, then reboot-bootloader, THEN reboot, it gets the HTC and stays.
Can someone please help me?
Thanks much in advance..
-Shaun

Your right bigdaddy, shaun you flashed a gsm rom i'm guessing from the unbranded forum.
Download the ruu from this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2250904
boot your phone into bootloader and make sure your bootloader is in fastboot
extract that ruu file to somewhere you can find easily maybe the desktop
open your command prompt and navigate to your android sdk folder and run this fastboot command
fastboot oem lock
then after you've relocked the bootloader
run the command
fastboot oem rebootRUU
run the setup.exe from the ruu file and let it return you to stock

good deal. Just remember to read everything before flashing. And if your unsure ask. I've had very minimal issues with flashing and changing settings but when I have its been totally my fault for not completely reading an op. if you flash and go back to read a step you've missed its usually too late.

Yeah dude, you're lucky that the international rom you flashed had asserts in it to check device type, or you might've had an actual paperweight on your hands. Stick to the Sprint forums next time.
Yeah I scared myself for sure.. even this morning activating it scared me a little cause normally use the DEC, but it said 'not a valid Sprint ESN', and the HEX

Hey guys, I need some help, also Im new to this sorta and I apologize if this thread isnt where its supposed to be, anywho i rooted my phone and was installing different roms, just trying them out, i had installed the android rev HD 12.1 rom on to my HTC One and it was working fine, but I watched a couple of reviews on the viperone roms so i decided to switch over just to check it out, i started the flashing and all was going well at first but then it froze for a good while stuck at 0% so i decided to restart the phone... turns out that was a horrible idea because now my back ups are gone and my other roms are missing too. well that was the original problem, I looked around and everywhere they said I had to reinstall my ruu to basically factory reset the phone and the first step is re-locking the bootloader... so i did, now it says "tampered- re-locked" and every now and then it says "security warning." then i started looking for my comapnies ruu and i cant find one... can anyone help?

Basically, if you want to stay back on root, i suggest you unlock your bootloader again and reflash your custom recovery and move on from there. After that you should flash a stock rom if you want to,by just searching it up in the htc one forums. After you have done that you probably have to start over, which means making a nandroid backup and NOT FORGETTING TO BACK UP. Your roms and all your info will be gone after you unlock the bootloader so remember to back up all your contacts and such into your google acc. Have fun rooting! XD

This is probably the best advice for you.
Just something I wanted to add,
Unlock your boot loader then flash a custom recovery just like the first time you did it.
Then boot to recovery and "adb push ROM.zip /sdcard/ " to get a ROM on your phone, and flash away.

Search for it, I think its under the main htc one general. Stay away from RUU unless you have s-off. You can brick your phone if you don't know what your doing.

You just need to unlock your bootloader again using htc developer page. As long as you can get your phone to bootloader you should be ok. I have never used one of the all in one root etc.. things since it is so easy on htc.
unlock bootloader, fastboot flash recovery newesttwrp.img.
