I'm sure this question has been answered before, but I can't find it anywhere, so here goes:
I always thought that whenever a ROM is installed it completly wipes and overwrites the /system partition. But perhaps I figure wrong, maybe the files/folders within /system are overwritten and any other pre-existing files are left behind.
Which is it?
I ask this because I notice that the size of /sytem in an update.zip varies from one ROM to another, this suggests to me that perhaps files can be left behind when a ROM is installed. Also I'm curious why it's sometimes possible to upgrade a rom without a wipe and sometimes it isn't.
It depends on how the ROM is set up to install...
Basically, a flashable zip is just a bunch of files and a script that installs the package. If the script also has instructions to erase files or directories, then it will...

it depends on what you are doing. if i flash a full ROM to my phone, it will just upgrade everything as if it were a real OTA from google, meaning it keeps every thing in tact. if i wipe the phone first, of course it re-writes everything. so it's a tough question to answer.
Thanks danger-rat, perfect explanation.
It's quite interesting that we rely on the ROM-dev to wipe whatever is necessary (as a manual wipe from Recovery-mode does not wipe /system). So I guess it's possible to install a new ROM and be left with bits of the old one still in /system if the ROM-dev didn't specifiy a format of /system.

this is not my work , so I will only share the link
but I hope some great dev will take a look @ it and see what e can do with it
maybe by increasing the system partition we can have enough space to dualboot 2 roms?

fine, working great !
only system partition didn´t change for me, but i set same value as for cache ... strange...
after NVFlash, i directly restored my CM backup. (formatted all partiotions first ...)
included cwm-5.0.2.6 recovery in NVFlash, worked like a charm. no need for SuperOneClick, just restore backup. Baseband 0823 was kept !
thanks for sharing.

Making the ext SD the main SD card is a kernal change I think

i´m using cm ...
it will work on ANY ROM, with NVFlash you flash orig. stock Froyo ROM to your phone, just with (your) changed partition sizes ...
when you are now flashing a new ROM from recovery, it will change your system, but will keep partition sizes ...
but as i posted before, the first restore of my cm backup worked fine, but system size wasn´t increased ( i set same values for system & cache partition) ... the next reflash of CM .170 today corrected this ... dunno why, perhaps cwm backup includes partitionsize of system, but not for data, cache, etc ??
but as mankian tested, don´t increase /data to more than 1,75 GB, or it will break CWM ...
Here is pre-build Partitons File & quick Guide in my MediaFireShareFolder :
Your Partitions will change to the following ->
System : 0.50 GB
Cache : 1,0 GB
Recovery : 50 MB
Data : 1.75 GB
in this folder is everthing you need :

just boot.img :i think : NO
boot.img is just kernel, system.img is complete ROM ...
to make it work on first flash, you also need system.img of your v20e ROM.
but you can put your prefered recovery in folder (rename to recovery.img first)
but no problem, just run NVFlash and afterwards restore your backup in CWM Recovery...
I had a look in my CWM backup, but system backup is noth stored as .img, but as "system.ext4.tar" ... so you can´t directly replace it with the system.img in NV Flash ...
just follow my quick guide, works fine !

as posted in my guide, i tried too high value for system (0,75 + 1,0 GB) ...
phone did boot up, but couldn´t mount internal storage... (the rest of the memory)
a simple reflash with NVFlash with lower values (system : 0,5 GB) solved it ...
i posted prebuild file with stable values in my guide.
i´m pretty sure a reflash with standard "android_fastboot_emmc_full.cfg" file will get your phone back to normal if anything is not working right...
values that seem to be the max :
system : 0,5 GB
data : 1,75 GB
this is my actual configuration - my prebuild file (everything working fine, recovery, mount internal storage ...)
Ok.. is it possible to make /data max at 8GB? and make extsd as primary sd? This is what im trying to accomplish act..

I was trying to mount the memory card by using the usb mass storage mode in a rescue disk but the mobile restarted itself a couple of times.. Later on I tried to mount the usb from cwm5 but was unsuccessful. In between all this, I do not know what happened (improper mounting/unmounting?) my device is now not booting into the OS.
Tried reinserting the battery.. no difference. Tried removing the memory card, stuck on "android" logo.
When I restart the mobile, it goes till the end of the bootscreen "Entering system" but then it reverts back to "cm7" boot screen and is stuck there.
My memory card is ok since i tried to mount it using cwm5 in windows and its working fine.
Can anyone let me know any quick solution to this as I need it working urgently?

But boot loop is more of when you are stuck on "android" screen. I am stuck on boot animation.
Update : I made a fresh installation of Apocalypse.
Restored backup of sd-ext : lots of fc but working.
Restored backup of data : stuck at book animation.
I am thinking maybe some broken application is causing this.. any way to find out for sure?
once happened to me with apocalipse. I lost the data.

I already did install a new rom last night! But i still need data from previous rom... like sms and whatsapp and other apps.. so I have made a nandroid backup just in case.
Can anyone help me in solving it or recovering the data from the nandriod atleast? Tried appextractor but it wasn't able to restore sms and didn't show whatsapp only! TB didn't help too. I guess its due too d2sd script due to which these apps are not able to locate the data. Any other app which might work?

Maybe opening the nandroid backup manually with 7zip and such. Look up inside your data and system .img files. Use the files inside to create a flashable zip with the data from the apps you most desperatly need. done by using a flashable zip for a rom, deleting everythin inside it except for META-INF, and looking at the updater-script file to make mount /data and flash to /data instead of flashing to /system, place the folder with the data you need inside the zip.

I am getting what you are trying to say but seems like I don't need it. I was able to restore the sd-ext partition which had all the data.. seems like sms file is corrupt? But anyhow, I think most of the data is there now, but no apps! I can see the ".asec" files in ".android_secure" backup but have no idea how to make apk out of these? Any though how nandriod is able to do that or any script for that?

yup, backup, then flash new rom, and then flash data partition from backup back.
I dont know if the OP solved the problem but you guys are wrong, settings are stored in data.. and data/data/com.android.providers.settings/database.. (something like that) so reflashing or restoring data after flashing will not do anything...
follow this.. it will help you see your screen.. and when you find the brightness slider just pull it up! that simple!..

then you can't say that we are all wrong.
it's just easier to reflash rom and then restore data partition
(look at inside recovery created data.img , then you will see what i mean.)
also , yes, IF it doesn't help, then you have to restore data manually ....copy-paste from recovery created data.img , just copy what u need, apps and so ,not anything else , like settings or etc.)

Be careful the rom I posted was for Galaxy Ace!!!
Yes, It's possible, I don't know in mini ... this is the GT-S5830 Q&A THREAD so...
but the fastest way to go back to stock is doing a backup before to use the custom, and then restoring it when you want to go back via custom RECOVERY, or FALSHING A FRESH STOCK ROM VIA ODIN
...and in Galaxy Ace it's possible to use directly the lastest firmware, "one package fw"
i know, im using ace right now.
the thing is i was failed revert back to stock using one pack firmware (on mini). am bit afraid it happens to ace either. but now it's all clear, thanks for all ur helps.
edit: whoaa, we can backup stock on ace, it s not recommended on mini. thanks again.

well, the best way to avoid all kind of troubles is flashing a fresh stock via Odin
I'm using a bareboned stock rom, I deleted all useless apps etc and I chaged the kernel and stock partitions from .rfs to .ext4, so I have a clean backup ready to restore in my SDCARD, so I can flash whatever I want, and then when I get tired I can always return to my clean previous rom and I don't need to use Odin
am a noob so...
1. change the kernel? even for lastest fw?
2. how to change the.rfs partition?

Well you need a custom kernel to get an init.d folder or create it on yourself but the easy way, flash cf-root b84, BE 1.5.1. or whatever kernel you want, and you'll get an init.d folder support, so you'll be able to flash the int2ext script without any kind of problem
