Lmao are people really that stupid? - Nexus 4 General

Checked Ebay and there are so many over priced Nexus 4 phones for sale, one of them is on £760 right now.......
The only reason to get a Nexus 4 over other devices was the price point of £280, are people really that stupid?

Yeah there will be some stupid people out there thinking off buying this...

Hahahaha

Well ebay is the place where you can get the phone at the moment. So people with the extra dough probably wont mind.

for a lot of people im sure the price isnt the biggest thing
this has plenty of solid hardware, one of the best for 2012.. and its a nexus
also, not all countries and carriers have it for the playstore price
of course someone will try to make a profit
is this your first day on this planet?

They aren't stupid, they're rich.

anyone else flip phones on craigslist?

lol i do.
yesterday i needed some quick cash because of a move im doing and i was short on my energy bill...
so i put my sprint galaxy nexus on craigslist for sale/ trade.
last week i got it new in the box for 150. a deal to me for sure.
i got a bunch of crap offers but eventually someone offered me their epic 4g touch and 100 cash for the gnex.
so we met up at a sprint store and called customer care because the store cannot do active phone swaps and we both went home happy.
right away i listed the phone on craigslist, within a few hours i got a few offers, mostly junk but one was or seemed to be worth while.
a white iphone 4 8gb, with case and charger, even trade. so telling her i was interested i posted the white iphone up on craigslist also forsale/trade before i even had it. i got many offers, a few low balls (lol even 50 dollars with the excuse that its outdated and old and the new iphone will be out this month lol), then a 225.00 offer, a 200 dollar offer, you get the idea. i entertained them all, but one of the guys ended up changing their minds and made a even better offer, he retracted his 200 dollar offer and said he would trade me his mint condition epic 4g touch with case, charger and 100 cash... BINGO lol, i quickly accepted.
how could i loose, i met up with the girl at 615pm to do the swap for my epic touch for her iphone 4, after thats done i wait for the guy who comes at 7 and we call sprint all over again and do another swap, it all works out and i leave with another 100 in cash and the same phone i came in with lol.
so i was tainted with a apple phone for about 10 mins... Lol it wasn't that bad but the screen was hard to adjust to.
anyone else flip on craigs? needless to say i have my epic back up on CL for hopefully another trade or sale.
i already got my epic touch running jellybean and honestly its not too much different then my gnex minus the lte which i dont have yet and the HD screen which is noticeable to me.
Seems kind of immoral to me. It's like abusing Wal-Mart return policies to make a buck. You're using Craigslist outside of its intended use for profit. But you do what you gotta do to make the bills work: I personally would not make a habit of "flipping phones".

lol immoral?
im using a public website that is made for buying, selling, and bartering.
thats exactly what im doing.
im not "abusing" or misusing anything, and its not a mega corporation where im scamming their return policies.
its a buy sell and trade website..
thats exactly what im doing.
in fact there are reality tv shows based on this same thing, that where they use outlets like craigslist, people do it with everything under the sun, from tvs, to cars.
im not ripping anyone off or telling people things that they arent.
im giving people what they want and im getting what i want.
exactly what the website is for.
When you start to talk about morality, you instantly are entering into a subjective paradigm in the philosophical/metaphysical sense. However, I do agree you're in a way taking advantage of peoples lack of knowledge on the tech you're trading. Is this immoral? Depends on how you define it. If both parties are happy and walk away from the deal feeling like their was an equitable exchange, then I personally don't think so. Ignorance is bliss I guess. Now, if you intentionally mislead the other party into believing they're getting a much better offer than they realize for your profit then yes this is, to me, immoral, but I don't think your doing this. It is the reason I believe the majority of advertisements and those working in the field are in some sense immoral, but this is getting off topic.
In short, I haven't done it and for me the amount of time and effort isn't worth the small return.
I didn't mean to imply you're ripping anyone off. I just find it interesting how one can make a buck nowadays. I stress the kind of part because I read about the iphone part and it boggles my mind how people are willing to pay so much for so little. I get that if the needs are met then it's fine. However it boggles me further how people can conclude the iphone 4 and the galaxy s2 phone is of equal value. Galaxy s2 clearly has better specs plus MIUI more than makes up for the iOS experience. I get that not everyone is gifted with our passion which is why I use the term "immoral" for someone who knowingly barters with this information in hand. But I do agree with l3lessed that if the girl is happy then that's what matters. Then I conclude that while the ends justifies the means this time, I wouldn't make a habit of this kind of business.
That said: I'm sure you can many people in the MP that has "flipped phone".

Ahh I see.
I was just short this month and this way its legal Lol
Everyone was happy. In fact all the deals I did were brought to me, made by the other party.
I agree the iPhone to me isn't worth much but as everyone can see they have a huge faithful following, enough so to dump more premium phones (in our eyes) in order to have one.
Locally regular iPhone 4 non s versions are still selling more than galaxy s2s.
Its mind boggling to me actually.

I flip phones all the time. If i find a great deal then i will most definitely snatch it up. One thing I never do is low ball. I always offer them a fair price that's low enough for me to make a profit, yet sits well with conscience. Business on Craigslist is easy money if you can negotiate.

I can't see the immorality in his actions. He's entertaining offers from others and not misrepresenting his goods. If anything, I'm impressed by the fact that youre arranging Craigslist deals in advance and juggling it all. You should get into stocks or futures or something and make real money with your talents.
It's not immoral, nothing wrong with it.
I have done that once or twice, it's how I get "new phones for free" but honestly it takes too much time/effort/driving and to me is not really worth it. I do it like once a year to upgrade my phone but that's about it. It's not a bad way to get a decent device though, just be willing to put up with all the BS that goes along with it.
I actually prefer the MP here for the most part, except for a few items that are overpriced here that I want to buy or underpriced (compared to local prices) that I want to sell.

Low ballers make me sick, but that's just a part of Craigslist.
Its not hard to do,but can be time consuming and irritating when you run into tire kickers and people who bs.
Throughout all the years I've used Craigslist for everything under the sun, from TVs,to fish tanks,to cars, refrigerators and probably other things I can't recall. But I've never have had one bad experience, never been robbed or put into any bad situations.
You just have to be smart and smell a bad situation before it happens.

I've never been robbed either. Just very nice people looking to buy and sell items.
If they want quick cash and I'm willing to buy, so be it. I take the time to relist the item and sit on it for a few days, a week, hell I've sat on an item for 3 months! It's all about time and effort. Here in NJ, there are really good deals. Business is just business.

I made money on craigslist this pass week. I just sold my GS3 for $400 (which I bought new for $440 on eBAY) and with the money I bought a white EVO LTE in mint condition for $225 which I sold on Ebay for $340 ($300 after fees and ship).
I list it on XDA http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1900703 but the memebers here are to cheap to even recognize a good deal.

Very nice.
I made some additional moves on Craigs list recently which I didn't post about.
I traded my gs2 for a white 16gb 4s which in return i traded for a new in the box black evo lte.
Sad to say I'm surprised that the resale value on these phones aren't higher, because the lte is not too much different than the gs3...

If he's your best friend, just give it to him for free. If he's a good friend, $165 is a good price, I just bought one for that price. If he's a crappy friend, $180-$200 depends on the condition of the phone. I would only pay $200 for a Nexus S if it has original box, accessories, and at least 9/10 condition though. Just make sure its a one time payment only.

Buy from XDA or Swappa, avoid ebay for used phones if you can unless there are lots of photos and a detailed description, speaking from experience here.
I snagged one up on ebay for 120 they have been going for less nowa days. 150 wouldn't be bad..
That is a bit low for a good quality GSM version, I can understand the Sprint version being that low.

Really I love this phone but I just picked one up for $75 on Craig'slist. Its my second nexus s4g because my last ones power button died. But let's be honest the hardware is being pushed to its limit and for the same $165 with some searching you could find a galaxy nexus. Like I said I love this phone and wouldn't trade it for anything but the price is kinda high.

i think 165$ is fine, in my country the used nexus s (97-98%) with box and accessories is only 150$ because it's m200s :good:
i think that 165 $ are a good price! in Italy Nexus S is sell at 179€
Good is good...but with 80$ plus you can find the Galaxy Nexus so if you have to sell it 165$ is a good price
I plaid $40 for mine, 2 weeks old from my friend, just the phone though.

The CDMA (Sprint) version is way cheap, but the GSM is easily $150. I just spent the last couple weeks shopping for one and, yes, the bidding IS ruthless. You will be VERY hard pressed to find a good condition GSm Nexus S for less than $150. It's not impossible, but you would have to have the cash on hand and be very patient.
What you will not find, though, is even a Sprint version for $60. Well, not one that works anyways.

Just give up, lol.
Bottom line:
4G > Cheap. Nobody wants CDMA phones
GSM > Not cheap. Nexus S still selling very well as decent replacements
Even similar phones, Galaxy S for instance, will share similar pricing.

Does the bargain price of the Nexus 4 make it less exclusive??

I was talking to one of my buddies here at work who is also an Android Freak like myself and we were discussing about how Google and LG can sell such a device packing what it does for $299 or $349.
It's seems like it has really beautiful build quality also, while Samsung sells a plastic dual core S3 with half the RAM, lower resolution screen for double the price!
Don't get me wrong, I am both happy and sad that the phone is so damn cheap. Glad because it is so dirt cheap that I can buy it as a backup phone to my Note 2 and just not worry about it falling and breaking or whatever. Replacing just the LCD on my Note 2 would probably pay for the whole Nexus 4!
Sad because since it is so cheap, it almost gives me the impression that it's some kind of gophone, pay as you go device. You know, a disposable phone. Something any 13 year old who mows lawns on the weekends can afford. Also judging by the comments and anticipation in this forum, those are most likely the majority of buyers. 13 year old geeks. =)
To me the device lost something special, exclusivity.
When I first picked up my Note 2, everybody at work was in awe and were ready to go purchase one immediately.
Then I told them how much I paid, $690 off contract and they all had sticker shock. Only one other fella at my work has a Note 2 besides me now, and that's my boss. The device feels special to me.
I know this post seems a bit ridiculous, but that's something that is bugging me a little about the device. What do you guys think? A little something inside kinda wish Google priced this device similar to the Galaxy Nexus. I think it would have been more special to me. Am I crazy?

Just because people are excited, you're assuming they're 13? Right...
... and imo, the price does not make it any less exclusive.
You could always buy two and strap them back-to-back for that "cachet" feel?
In any case, mainstream smartphones, like all technology, will always be getting less exclusive. If exclusivity is of import, the Tag Heuer Android phones look quite sharp, but probably will be behind on the OS curve...
Setting aside the ridiculousness of caring about exclusivity, your work colleagues likely got sticker-shock because they don't know much about the cellphone market. I'm sure they don't think of the iPhone as an "exclusive" device, and yet it's in the same range as the Note 2 off-contract. The Nexus 4 may not be a monetarily exclusive device, but it's still going to have limited sales due to the number of people who are informed enough about their options to pick one up.

You should realize that there are people outside of XDA who don't even know that this phone exists.
You say less exclusive... I say more support.
How many people actually know what a Nexus phone even is? I don't know anyone who does. They don't really advertise and come to think of it, I've never seen anyone with a Nexus (any of them).

Which is why we shouldn't worry about the phone being out of stock. Hopefully the stock outweighs the demand.
If having exclusivity means paying $1000 dollars, I'll take a less exclusive phone any day for $350
You think $500+ phones are exclusive? You'll find more Note 2s and iPhones than N4.
That said, the more the N4s out there, the more accessories there will be for it. And thats always a good thing.

Perhaps. Google may keep production low for the first wave after watching previous launches. There seems to be a lot of uncertainty about the popularity of this phone due to the lack of LTE, expandable storage, and maybe inadequate battery. Those of us looking to buy the phone can only hope that it is either not that popular or that Google didn't lower production.

You know what I got from reading this? That you need to feel special/better than your friends. That's no reason to jack up the price of a phone.
Tell you what, I'll buy mine, then sell it to you for $859.99, that'll really blow your colleagues out of the water! Or how about avoiding the faux pas of bragging about how much money you spent on a cell phone. Hell, if anything I'll be showing my friends this phone and telling them how cheap it was. Look at this thing, it's awesome, and cost half the price of your NoteII!

I don't see anything wrong of a 13 year old can save up and purchase this device, it allows a younger audience to own a modern smartphone without the hefty price tag. Exclusivity to one type of group (in this case being age) isn't somthing company's want for their products, and if they lure in the younger users with the low price tag, that means more marketshare for them. The nexus 4 isn't a fashion item like more popular phones such as the iPhone, or even the galaxy s3, it's made for contract free or value plan customers who want a fast phone for a reasonable price.
Lol I think this thread should be closed. =/
Who cares? Does it matter if the phone is not as "exclusive" as you would like?
It's an amazing phone at a great price, it will further push the Android ecosystem.
If you want exclusive, stick with foreign imports of obscure devices.

3 of my friends and 2 cousins who have been up since last night sitting infront of their computer, couldn't get theirs. I'm sure there are many more like that out there right now. After Nexus 7, imo Google should have been prepared, maybe should have gone with a solo US launch first and cover the rest of the world after 2 weeks or so. Works for Samsung every single time.

Yep, smells somewhat like a PR-stunt to me. No offense to Google, but such a big company (that makes its money througn market analytics and advertising), not prepared for this huge demand after the success of the N7 and the low-pricing-policy? Hard to think of...
This is all speculation, but they could be after the exact headline of this thread coming to major newspapers tomorrow, certainly not a bad thing in terms of PR.
I personally think, that they made a low amount of devices available at the launch hoping for a sell-out like it has only happened with Apple products. Main stash of devices will be available soon, there has to be some over-stock before the holidays, they won't loose all the possible sales at this time of the year where customers tend to spend the most money on electronic devices.
But as I said, all speculations, no offense. I could be wrong

Speculation but the only reasonable logic. Given how slow and how many errors there were, Google is not ready to sell iPhone numbers. I do not believe that much stock was emptied. In either case, hopefully they provide some numbers for us. If they don't, well then I think we can just assume the PR stunt.

Lets wait and watch, I would love to read about this launch and see what everyone is thinking about this. Can't call this a satisfying launch at all but a successful launch from Google's point of view I would say.

Yeah it seems to be a ****ty marketing stunt, might of had a negative impact actually because they've pissed a lot of people off

i guess they did it on reason, everytime apple releases iphone they make huge buzz around the world sold out sold out huge line outside of the store.. AS GOOGLE CANT HAVE HUGE LINE OUTSIDA STORE THEY TRICKED US WITH LESS STOCK AND MAKING SOLD OUT BUZZ. SHUT UP GOOGLE U MORON U LEFT LOADS OF UNHAPPY LOYAL SLEEPLESS CUSTOMERS WHO WERE EAGERLY WAITING ON THE DEVICE.
i doubt they had 500 devices for uk market

Being in France I think I'd have to say why don't they cover the "rest of the world" first and leave America to last?.... :silly:

lol, they effectively did, started in Australia and worked westward to the US.
I find it believable, since they are not pulling off the same sold out stunt with the Nexus 10. It is probably due to the price. All they have to get out there is superior to the GS3 and for $349 unlocked with no contract and whoever that needs a new phone would be crazy not to buy it.
That said, there are not enough geeks to sustain these numbers like the iphone 5 can sustain the numbers. However, 2 million or more geeks all ordering at 9am pst is definitely plausible. But once that 2 million gets theirs then we will see how much staying power the Nexus 4 generates.
This is without a doubt a marketing technique. Watch all the tech articles tomorrow "Google sells out Nexus 4 in .03 microseconds!"
And you'll get ignorant posters with comments like "OMGWTFBBQ Apple took 2 days to sell out! I love Google tehe LMAO OMFG"
even if Google only had 3 phones to sell, and Apple had 3 million
marketing stunt
Exactly, totally a marketing stunt. They want the headlines that the Nexus 4 sold out, that its a hot commodity. That will create more interest, higher demand, and magically in a few days a whole butt-load of units will show up in the play store. It'll be interesting to see if they actually release number of units sold today.
They sold out because they only had like 10 devices available in each region, except the US, where they had like 15 units available...
Yes, I'm bitter.
I'm actually more curious the volume of sales for the first day of release, and if Google will release those numbers.
I gt one for myself!! But ya google sucked!! I feel sorry for you all!! They must have stocked arnd one lakh/0.1 million units in each country!! Thats really bad!! Apple had really done a good job

Is it me? But it seems the price is too good to be true?

The 16GB Samsung Galaxy S IV is $649. The 32GB Nexus 5 is $399.
What am I missing? This deal seems to good to be true?
Thinking of selling my 32GB S IV on ebay today!!

It's not that it's too good to be true, it's that $649 is a ridiculous price to begin with.
You just don't understand the crazy markup companies have to make profit.

Sell your S IV and buy a Nexus 5 (if you can find one in stock). I'm reasonably certain that you won't be disappointed. I've had my Nexus 4 for almost a year and it's been a great phone. Looking forward to switching to the N5 when it arrives in a couple of weeks.

True. I returned my iPhone 5S yesterday and ordered the Nexus 5.
Unless you stick to the upgrading every 2-years at subsided pricing, Google has the best pricing as far as I see.
Let's just be happy there was no 8GB version. Otherwise the 8GB would have probably started at $349 and bumped the other 2 up by $50.
The Nexus device is not really meant to compete with the S3 or G2 at this point. The Nexus device is really meant for devs to create on pure Android and Google is willing to eat profits for that. In the meantime all the non-devs and phone geeks get to enjoy a great phone at a great price.
If Google wanted to sell this phone like there was no tomorrow and compete with Samsung you would have seen some crazy marketing done by them prior to the launch. Instead, there wasn't even a peep out of Google and it silently just showed up for sale. To me that says they are not trying to take over the world with device sales.
I think their probably more interested in making profits on devices through Motorola. These are just some of my opinions and really doesn't represent anything more then that. Only Google really knows the answer to the who, what, where, when and why's. Just accept you are getting a great phone at a great price.
you know it only cost Samsung 240 dollars to build 3? and look at the price of that. ridiculous. I am grateful for the nexus line of phones. even with some compromises . I am done spending that kind of money on phones anymore
