Well I received my nexus 4 from carphone warehouse today, the box itself is very very simple but sleek. The box is pretty loose compared to the box of the nexus 7 which was pretty tight, when. You open the box you are presented with the shiny new monster and comes with USB cable, adapter and guidebook, I noticed straight away after a deep inspection that there is a small gap between the glass and the phone itself. This worries me as it seems easy to get dirt and dust dragged into it, which I have already noticed. The phone itself is very slippery when placed on open palm due to its glass finish. But when held the rubbery sides help enough to get a grip, the rubber is very smooth but its fine to grip! The pattern on the back isn't as obvious as I thought it would be. It only truly shines when held In a Direct source of light which makes it look so..... Futuristic. The UI itself is what you would expect. Stock android. The ability to add widgets to the lock screen is very nice, so is the quick access to the camera from swiping to the side.
Overall I am pleased with the design of the nexus 4, it. Looks really thin, despite not being a super thin smartphone, this is due to the awesome curves and design.
The camera is good enough. Not amazing but certainly better than other 8mp units. As for video capture it seems to catch very good detail. And the low frame rate is not too noticeable. Photo sphere is also great. But requires ALOT of effort if you want to get a perfect sphere.
The battery life so far is very reasonable. Enough to get through the day easy with moderate to heavy useage.
The keyboard is very very easy to use. The best if anything. Swipe input is fluid and never fails increasing typing speeds up to 25% faster.
The display is crisp. Although you will struggle to say it is better than the S3 from a normal distance. Videos and photos look great and shows great detail.
Overall this phone is the best I have ever had, and I have owned phones such as the S3, one X and xperia S. Although I did find multi touch to be faster on the S3. Benchmark scores are odd. I was expecting it to roast the competition. But it failed to do so, instead it was on par with the transformer prime on antutu. If you would like a video review too. Please let me know and hit the thanks button

Just waiting for the 32GB version this year otherwise I'll just get a GS4 next year.
in your opinion, best display on nexus 4 or one x?
Colours seem to have higher contrast on the one X but looks more crisp on nexus 4

Low frame rate was fixed in the latest 4.2 OTA. Have you updated yet? It should be a solid 30 fps now compared to 22 fps and randomly dropped frames before the final 4.2 update.
Yeah its a great display! And I did update. I still had a few dropped frames but it was very smooth. I said low frame rate as I guessed from reviews its been hammered into my head that it has low frame rate lol. Will look in more detail tomorrow at it

True, good point!
Hows the focus/shutter speed on the camera? Does it point & shoot well?
Focusing isn't a issue. The shutter is fast enough. Although not instant. You need to focus first otherwise you risk a blurry shot.

What do you mean by multi touch being slower than on the S3? Gestures like pinch to zoom?
Also how do you find the size and the aspect ratio of the display after using an S3?
+1 for the video review too .
Yeah pinch to zoom it seems to require more effort. And the device feels so much easier to hold! The aspect ratio is not as good. But that's just been a tad picky.

When i used the nexus 7 first i was sad that the screen isn't vibrant as the competition. They got everything right but the main thing wrong. Today i realized that they didnt get the screen wrong
I has a book for college in a pdf format. I decided to read it on the my cousins ipad 3 rather than my laptop thinking it will be cool bexause of the "RETINA" display. I read for 5 minutes then stopped. If i would have have carried on i would have gone blind. Then i thought hmmm let do in in the nexus. Reading book on laptop is pointless and boy was i amazed.
The screen was amazing for the book and didnt hurt my eyes at all and from now i am a Perfectly satisfied Nexus 7 Customer.

I read all the time on my iPad 3 and my eyes never hurt. Not sure how better calibrated colors are causing you problems reading PDF files.
I never really saw much of a huge difference between the vibrance of displays with the n7 vs other tablets... And this is coming from someone who's gets yearly for blindness tests. Glad to hear it works for you though!

I don't have much of a comparison to the ipad other then I know this is easier to hold, but I do know I read know more now than ever before in my life because of this thing. It's just so easy and comfortable.

Did you try changing the brightness of the ipad at all? I've read plenty on my ipad and never had a problem. The nexus has a good display but it does lacks little in contrast and colors. But it's good enough for what I use it for.

I agree. My big brother & his wife has a Ipad 1 (mom & me got for wife's bday), which I sometimes use when at their house. That thing is a PAIN. I much prefer my Nexus 7, much better to use and hold in hand. Now my big b uses my Nexus EVERYTIME I'm at his house.
Poor Ipad
I have used both and have no problems with either device. Was a tough decision to buy the nexus after using my friends ipad 3. In the end it came down to portability and price. I can fit my nexus in my big coat pocket and head off to Uni. Its great

N7 screen is great ,but Ipad 2 better than N7 .
Here's what many professional analysis results found regarding the Nexus 7.
The display "hardware" is exceptional!!! There is no debate there.
But the firmware display calibration is "lousy" and thus impacts the display negatively for those that are wanting a much better color match. So if Google fixed this in a future update, then the display would move to the forefront of the 7" pack.
Here's hoping that an update results the calibration issues and pushes this display to the top of the 7" pack.
I have a KFHD7 and N7 in hand right now. Side by side, they are almost comparable. The N7 auto brightness is very aggressive and keeps the screen very dimmed. If you adjust your own brightness, the colors on the N7 will come through, however the KFHD has more contrast creating slightly more vibrant colors and deeper blacks. Something like that could be fixed with color calibration software. I'm honestly liking the N7 over the KFHD. Yes, the KFHD has better colors and definitely better sound, but I like the size and thinness of the N7. Feels much lighter and less bulky.
Well ive owned many high end Android devices like the Gnex, GS3, HOX, Note 2, Optimus G and just last week I had the oportunity to get the Nexus 4 for a trully great price so I went for it. After reading all about it on the web, I was very anxious to get my hands on it and when I finally did... WHAT A DISSAPOINTMENT! let me elaborate...
The device build quality and design is great, I really like the form factor, materials used, overall design. The clean Android OS is superb, and something that other manufacturers should copy instead of giving us all sort of useless bloatware...
Now to the screen.... that GOD-AWFUL-SCREEN.! I cant beleive that a high end device like this has such a poor screen! out of the box the colors are so washed out and dull, the viewing angles are also terrible. I went to google and did a little research and finally installed some roms with calibrated screen settings and the colors definetely improved, but the viewing angles did not, even if you tilt the screen a little bit to the left or to the right the blacks become white (like my cheapo $25- candybar motorola phone). I find this totally unaceptable and going to sell this ASAP. Its really a pitty, because I was so looking forward to getting this phone. But in my case the screen is the most important part of the phone and this screen is just so sub-par. What I dont get is that this is supossed to be the same screen as the Optimus G, but comon, theyre not even close!!
The viewing angles really aren't the best but the screen itself when you look straight at it is pretty good in my opinion.
But thanks for your 2 cents!
You should sell it to me for a good price

Yes, with the custom rom that I installed the colors improved a lot, but the viewing angles remained terrible! what I really dont get is that this is supossed to be the same screen as the optimus G right? the OG had GREAT viewing angles! how can this be??
On principle I too think the viewing angles are unacceptable....I was shocked when I saw them really. Reviews seemed to gloss over them and some had the nerve to say they were good. lulz No.
With all that being said when I wasn't testing the viewing angles and just used the phone as I normally world, the screen looked good, if not a little washed out.
I only had it for a day then sold it.
So yeah, they suck when you look for them but straight on as I imagine most use thier phone, its all good.

Price will not lie ...
Got 2 release ones here. Lovely screens, best ive ever had with great viewing angles.
Guess LG changed production after losing too much money.
Definitely worse than my mytouch 3g.
In all seriousness, its a $300 phone, so you get what u pay for. viewing angle is not a problem with me if I look at it from straight ahead, and there's utilities to change the color and gamma.

So just noticed the screen STILL has grain to it. If you look close it looks hazy and grainy like film grain. You can see it on whites easily and in lower brightness.
I wonder if Samsung can ever fix this.
Also the screen has lines on it on low brightness on grey and white areas. Also very annoying.
Anyone else notice this?

Yes. I noticed this all the way back to the S2. I was actually wishing they would go with an IPS screen for the S5.
Yeah this is annoying me to no end. The note 3 had it worse since it was bigger and had only 1080p still. Honestly I love the screen colors and such but my eyes are really sensitive to all this and I am a photographer and work with calibrated devices all day :/ I'd what to do. I'd go with the m8 but the phone is way too big

I don't know what to tell ya. It's bothered me, but its one of those perks that comes with Super Amoled technology. :/ This is why I prefer the iPhone's screen to amoled.

It's a sacrifice to have infinite contrast? I had the M7 and I have no idea what you are talking about. what did you ever do before 720p displays and before the iPhone 4? Holy crap.

Infinite contrast isn't that appealing to me. Accurate colors and sharp screens without grain and horrible color shifting or tinting is.

I don't hold the phone to my face so I can't really tell. Compared to the n2 I came from its world's better.

I am waiting for a latest version of a brand new X phone just to see if solves viewing in sunlight issues. One buggy warranty Repl did have a very bright screen.
All my dim examples & store demos have been on HW from the era of the 1st 422 builds. More here

I use velis auto brightness which is a slight improvement on stock for sunlight ( and better battery). But the sunlight legability is nowhere as good as Samsung's even Sony's are little better.

There are two types of screens in the direct sunlight: bad and worse. I've patiently endured that problem for years. Then I found an unexpected solution. When I found out that Gorilla 3 glass is not as solid as it supposed to be I decided to buy a screen protection despite I dislike it. I opted for the antiglare one. After application I discovered two significant changes: All of sudden the white color wasn't white any more but slightly gray with blurred dots in all primary colors (what didn't bother me much). But surprisingly the screen started to look and fell like a sheet of paper and not like a mirror any more. And that's how I eliminated an effect of direct sunlight to the screen.
So I have a couple of questions. I broke the screen on my Nexus 6 and I'm going to replace the LCD and glass on it but is there a side product that I can buy that is not QHD and runs 1080p or lower resolution so that it doesn't eat up my battery.
OEM only if you ask me. I'm no engineer but I would assume issues would come in from having a 500ish PPI prepped software with 3-400 PPI hardware. Makes sense to me but maybe I'm dumb and talking out of my arse

The qhd display does NOT "eat" extra battery because of its resolution. Each pixel on the qhd puts out less light (and consumes less power) than a pixel of a 1080p.
I have notice this on the Nexus 6 it is not bright enough for me ( expecially in the Sun at full brightness you can barely see it) and I've already seen signs of burnin and I do introverted lighting to try to stop it. I'm just saying whenever they where designing the Nexus 6 I would have rather them stay with1080p and pushed for better battery life, instead of a higher resolution screen. Also they use Gorilla Glass 3 instead of 4 they could of even use a sapphire and I would have been more satisfied. Now don't get me wrong I think this display is beautiful but that's not as important as processing power and battery life to me.
