It might be just me, but I read that 7" form factor and kind of ignored it. In pictures and reviews, it looks pretty big (well, not iPad big, but bigger than I thought). But once I saw a picture of the nexus next to a galaxy nexus, I was kind of shocked. It's only a little more than 3" larger than the phone I think.
Also I went into a Best Buy and played with another 7" tablet. These things are tiny! I hope that the better resolution makes it seem a little larger.

Lol should have seen it coming! It is true in regards to the Nexus though..well played.
... im not going to say it, read ur last post LOL.
anyways, I already have a first gen ipad. and while browsing the web and reading on it are very comfertable on the eyes, the size just feels slightly bigger than it needs to be, going to give this 7inch a whirl, and if i dont like it, meh, it was 250, not a huge loss.

Haha damn it!!! Not even intentional.
But yeah I'm just worried about room. Not sure if I'll like it as this is my first tablet and I don't mind the size of an iPad too much. But it is large. That was intentional.
Nope. 7" is pretty much a STANDARD MEASURE.

Although I'm familiar with Kindle Touch, which is almost exactly as big as Nexus only 2cm shorter. I still made a paper model of Nexus 7 and have been starring at it from time to time. I also glue a 6 inch photo on it to simulate how big the screen is. (It's a few mm smaller than a 6 inch photo). It's been fun. I like it more and more now.
The screen is about as large, as the Galaxy Note is (more specifically, 1cm wider, and about the same height depending on how you're counting).
I'm looking forward to reading pdfs, believe it or not. They're almost readable on the Nexus, and 1.5x the width should make all the difference while not being too cumbersome. At least that's the theory. TBH I might've preferred a 7.7 to be safe and amoled.

Well the Galaxy Note's screen size is 5.3 inches and the Nexus 7 is 7 inches.
I had no idea what screen size the nexus was going to be until I viewed the keynote online. and the 7" form factor is imo awesome! perfect size to hold one handed and perfect for thumb-typing too. Try thumb typing on an iPad and you look like a retard.
This thread reminds me of the 3inch/ 6inch theory from middle school. lol
Its just shrinkage it will look bigger when it warms up I swear
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2
In my opinion the reason it looks larger is cause everyone takes really close up photos of it, but because it has such a high res screen it looks normal. (i dunno if that even makes sense)
But anyway I think the 7" form factor is great and just to clarify the screen is 7" and not the bezel. It probably might look smaller in comparison to a phone with a 4.7-5" screen, but I don't have one of those just yet

No, it's not heavy. Go hold a Xoom for an hour, THAT is heavy.

I was caught off guard by the heft too once I received it. Its not heavy but the thing feels solid as hell. That said, I feel I need a case now cuz a drop on my stone floors would probably ruin it. The size feels perfect tho, never having used a tablet before.

I have an iPad and a Sony Tablet S, this at 340 grams will be replacing the 598 gram Sony monstrosity and hopefully make long reading sessions much much easier.
That's my thought anyway. 340 grams is also way less than my iPad's humongous and wrist breaking 652 grams.
The Nexus 7 feels heavy for its size; more than you'd expect especially considering the lack of bezel to grab on the sides.
First was from Sam's club.had the touchscreen deadspots, so it went back
Second was from the play store.same touchscreen problem. Rmaed it.
Third was perfect, except for significant light bleed in the lower left corner. Rma.
Fourth came today...and the screen is sticking up over the bezel on the left side!

Wow, hopefully the next one won't have the lifted display. However, if it has a dead pixel I'd call it a day and settle with it and hope nothing else crops up. I've learned with these products that you will NEVER get a "perfect unit" just one that's "good enough". Then again, with the defects like dead touchscreen spots and lifted displays these are clearly manufacturing and part issues that should be fixed.
Good luck.
I really wanted to buy one of these tablets, but hearing stories like yours is keeping me from moving forward. I'm continuing to monitor these forums to see if it improves, however, I'm losing faith and considering getting a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7-inch tablet instead. I hope you get a functional one soon. Don't lose too much faith in the Nexus 7. It's not unusual for new products to have hardware issues on the first batch. Look at Apple's track record, I bought a launch date Intel Macbook Pro expecting a solid device. However, I was greeted with a machine that was riddled with issues. I say buy a Nexus 7 now from a retailer nearby if you can. That way if you do end up with a flawed device you can always return it to them within their return period. I've had mine since early last month and have no issues with mine.
I'm onto my third coming tomorrow. if this doesn't work out I will refund it and get the yes wait for it - iPad Mini! Hate on!
I got my third today and it's the worst one so far. I probably need to sleep on it before deciding what to do next. I'm not too happy with Google or ASUS right now though.
That's really unfortunate man. I'd say keep on trying, but thats easy for me to say. Ive been lucky enough to get a good unit n the first go round.

If this were just any old Android tablet, I'd agree. I did the same with the Transformer Prime--too many issues, too many replacements, and I finally gave up and got a refund directly from ASUS.
However, this is the only Nexus tablet, i.e., the only one that will get immediate updates directly from Google. That's worth its weight in gold. It's also going to be a great development device for people who are into that sort of thing.
It's a pain in the **** to go through all these gyrations to get a decent unit, but in this case I think it makes more sense than it would otherwise.
After reading all these replies, it honestly makes me feel bad that mine was near perfect on delivery.
The only problem I had was that there were too little scratches on the outer rim.

Really, any problems are small-fry. I have 2 units, and 2 have gone to relatives, and they are all perfect. Mine was a UK pre-order, the others shortly after launch,
Mine has a really slight screen lift, but you would have to look real close, and it really doesn't bother me, it's a high spec entry level device.
This is how Asus operates. If you enjoy the Prime despite its Asus inspired defects, keep it and enjoy it. If you insist on a well built device, wait for a non Asus Nexus tablet.

Could be the mold on the bezel if looking at the device from the top down.
But my replacement has two marks on the bezel as well. Looking at the screen, left side. About 3/4" from top, and bottom.
To me, it looks like they've taken it back apart to correct the screen lift issue.
I am on my first Device and have no problems with it.
Guess its just luck at the moment.
I sold my S3 and switched to my old GNex while I waited on the N4. Ordered, shipped pretty much right away and got it. But now I'm actually quite disappointed. The screen is awful compared to the GNex or S3. Wireless display doesn't work (I guess I can blame Netgear for that). Wireless charging doesn't work right (Qi certified chargers should work on all Qi devices IMHO).
All in all, I actually miss my GNex, and think I may just go back to that. Nothing on the N4 amazes me.

I have it in front of me side by side with my GNex - and the difference is insane. Colors are washed out, black is grey and the contract is poor.
In *my* opinion, one of the worst displays I've seen in a long time. Samsung has spoiled me...
The only thing I will agree with is the screen. Not as vibrant as my Vibrant was, but I don't care. I have a phone that does everything I want it to. Have not tried wireless charging yet and probably will never use the wireless display.
Sell it to someone who wants it and go back to your old phone.
I hate the amoled screen on the Gnex versus N4. The N4 is a huge improvement. It isn't "washed out" its just not oversaturated like half the phones on the market are.
Yeah, it will not looked as over-saturated as an amoled screen. Amoleds might look colorful, but are way too over-saturated in my opinion. What you are seeing on the Nexus 4 is how the colors should look. The Nexus 4s that are being shipped haven't been calibrated properly, but at least they don't look as insane as an amoled screen.
Sigh
Another user who had become accustomed to poor amoled screens.
The colours that amoled shows are not correct, they are severely oversaturated.

Exactly, I like the S3 screen but i realize it is not accurate coloring! Amoleds make you believe what you are seeing is how colors look in real life. The IPS in the N4 is more accurate and sharper.
I understand where many people are coming from when they say "washed out screen", but when you compare it to the overly saturated Samsung screens it does make a huge difference. I honestly love the N4 screen and think it's 10x better than the gNex, and is not even compareable to my G2X...I must say however, that the N4 has an unbelieveably nice, realistic color looking scheme with it's screen and I absolutely adore it!
Lol OP sounds like a bit of a troll.
I'm coming from a Gnex, and I have been extremely impressed with the speed of the N4. The colors on my Gnex were very purple, but a custom kernel and ROM were able to correct it. The screen on the N4 looks a little white in comparison, way better than purple. I can live with this for now, but I will be flashing as soon as any worthwhile looking ROM and kernels come out.
I'm also coming from a GNex. I like the N4 screen so much more. The colors on the GNex always made the icons and a lot of other things seem cartoonish to me. The N4 seems so much more natural. When I first got my GNex one of the first things I looked for was a kernel with some kind of voodoo color... Same thing with my Nexus S.

Just to make sure your device isn't defective try visiting a tmobile store and compare your phone with the ones on display to see if its the same.

I agree - it does do everything I want it to - but so did my GNex - the whole purpose of dropping another $350 on a phone, is that the upgrade is actually an upgrade.
Only upside is that they are in such high demand that it'll sell with a profit. Sorry to whoever buys it and feels ripped off by me

only 2 things bug me about the n4
1. static noise from headset (well not really since you only hear it in a quiet room and put the phone to your ear)
2. battery life
amoled is so bad in low brightness, turns useless when you're outside, and the burn in

I thought the same thing, then I compared it at the local T-Mobile store and it looks the same. I guess Amoled really did screw me up - but at least black is actually black on that. Given the comments here, it is clearly a personal thing. I just can't get used to the washed out colors. Reception is also weaker and audio over Bluetooth crackles.
Don't get me wrong - it is a gorgeous phone, but I had hoped for more.
Yeah, I agree the N4 looks more washed out, but as everyone has said, it's all about OLED and the perceived color compared to realistic color.
I also noticed that my GNex had more of a yellow (warmer) tint to it whereas the N4 is more bluish-white. I much prefer the N4 screen and it's not even close.
Well ive owned many high end Android devices like the Gnex, GS3, HOX, Note 2, Optimus G and just last week I had the oportunity to get the Nexus 4 for a trully great price so I went for it. After reading all about it on the web, I was very anxious to get my hands on it and when I finally did... WHAT A DISSAPOINTMENT! let me elaborate...
The device build quality and design is great, I really like the form factor, materials used, overall design. The clean Android OS is superb, and something that other manufacturers should copy instead of giving us all sort of useless bloatware...
Now to the screen.... that GOD-AWFUL-SCREEN.! I cant beleive that a high end device like this has such a poor screen! out of the box the colors are so washed out and dull, the viewing angles are also terrible. I went to google and did a little research and finally installed some roms with calibrated screen settings and the colors definetely improved, but the viewing angles did not, even if you tilt the screen a little bit to the left or to the right the blacks become white (like my cheapo $25- candybar motorola phone). I find this totally unaceptable and going to sell this ASAP. Its really a pitty, because I was so looking forward to getting this phone. But in my case the screen is the most important part of the phone and this screen is just so sub-par. What I dont get is that this is supossed to be the same screen as the Optimus G, but comon, theyre not even close!!
The viewing angles really aren't the best but the screen itself when you look straight at it is pretty good in my opinion.
