Did anyone else think the Nexus was larger? - Nexus 7 General

It might be just me, but I read that 7" form factor and kind of ignored it. In pictures and reviews, it looks pretty big (well, not iPad big, but bigger than I thought). But once I saw a picture of the nexus next to a galaxy nexus, I was kind of shocked. It's only a little more than 3" larger than the phone I think.
Also I went into a Best Buy and played with another 7" tablet. These things are tiny! I hope that the better resolution makes it seem a little larger.

its not the size that maters, its how you use it...

Lol should have seen it coming! It is true in regards to the Nexus though..well played.

... im not going to say it, read ur last post LOL.
anyways, I already have a first gen ipad. and while browsing the web and reading on it are very comfertable on the eyes, the size just feels slightly bigger than it needs to be, going to give this 7inch a whirl, and if i dont like it, meh, it was 250, not a huge loss.

Haha damn it!!! Not even intentional.
But yeah I'm just worried about room. Not sure if I'll like it as this is my first tablet and I don't mind the size of an iPad too much. But it is large. That was intentional.

Nope. 7" is pretty much a STANDARD MEASURE.

The screen real estate is 7"

Although I'm familiar with Kindle Touch, which is almost exactly as big as Nexus only 2cm shorter. I still made a paper model of Nexus 7 and have been starring at it from time to time. I also glue a 6 inch photo on it to simulate how big the screen is. (It's a few mm smaller than a 6 inch photo). It's been fun. I like it more and more now.

The screen is about as large, as the Galaxy Note is (more specifically, 1cm wider, and about the same height depending on how you're counting).
I'm looking forward to reading pdfs, believe it or not. They're almost readable on the Nexus, and 1.5x the width should make all the difference while not being too cumbersome. At least that's the theory. TBH I might've preferred a 7.7 to be safe and amoled.

Well the Galaxy Note's screen size is 5.3 inches and the Nexus 7 is 7 inches.

I had no idea what screen size the nexus was going to be until I viewed the keynote online. and the 7" form factor is imo awesome! perfect size to hold one handed and perfect for thumb-typing too. Try thumb typing on an iPad and you look like a retard.

This thread reminds me of the 3inch/ 6inch theory from middle school. lol

Its just shrinkage it will look bigger when it warms up I swear
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2

In my opinion the reason it looks larger is cause everyone takes really close up photos of it, but because it has such a high res screen it looks normal. (i dunno if that even makes sense)
But anyway I think the 7" form factor is great and just to clarify the screen is 7" and not the bezel. It probably might look smaller in comparison to a phone with a 4.7-5" screen, but I don't have one of those just yet

Oh man, just tried to use my N7 outside in the sun...

Inside, this screen looks great. For the price, it can't be beat. But I think having this amazing SLCD2 on my One XL has spoiled me because as soon as I walked out of the house with my N7, I was immediately disappointed with the screen. It's not even that sunny out and this thing is dim as hell. Can barely see it. Oh well. I am still absolutely amazed with this thing so I will call this a minor complaint but something I am more than happy to deal with. Anybody else a little disappointed with the display in this regard?

Gotta try this when I get my Nexus 7. Actually, would this not work on the Galaxy Nexus as well?
The screen is good, no doubt about it. But compared to my iPad 3 and my SGS3, it obviously doesn't compare. I knew that would be the case when I bought it, so I'm not bothered, it's easily good enough and better than anything in this price range.

I thought I recall the iPad screen to not be that great in sunlight as well. That said, I'm not sure I've ever seen a tablet that is worth a damn in the sunlight with the exception of the b/w nook readers.
This is the difference between a tablet and a dedicated b&w e-reader. It's a tradeoff, but I've never really had a need for a tablet outside... but the sunglasses trick is intriguing.

In the sunlight department I couldn't comment, I live in England and a sunny day has been few and far between since I got my iPad.
IPAD?
Can't comment based on driect experience with the iPad and the N7, but it's worth checking out on the apple forums that this is a very common complaint for their tabs. Also, iPad 3 is 4X more expensive, I would hope for te money it would perform better!
These devices are all pretty early in developement (relatively speaking), my B/W ereader "ink" fades horribly in direct sunlight. Still like the device. And as far as polarized glasses....I have a pair and have found it is impossible to wear these glasses and try to read anything on any devices I have owned.

Yeah, it is definitely a washed-out piece of garbage out in the sunlight. Most tablets pale in the presence of sunlight though, so m not really too concerned. Going outside? Grab a paperback. That's the only solution.

I have an iPad and a Sony Tablet S, this at 340 grams will be replacing the 598 gram Sony monstrosity and hopefully make long reading sessions much much easier.
That's my thought anyway. 340 grams is also way less than my iPad's humongous and wrist breaking 652 grams.
The Nexus 7 feels heavy for its size; more than you'd expect especially considering the lack of bezel to grab on the sides.

Why I Think the nexus 7 screen is great

When i used the nexus 7 first i was sad that the screen isn't vibrant as the competition. They got everything right but the main thing wrong. Today i realized that they didnt get the screen wrong
I has a book for college in a pdf format. I decided to read it on the my cousins ipad 3 rather than my laptop thinking it will be cool bexause of the "RETINA" display. I read for 5 minutes then stopped. If i would have have carried on i would have gone blind. Then i thought hmmm let do in in the nexus. Reading book on laptop is pointless and boy was i amazed.
The screen was amazing for the book and didnt hurt my eyes at all and from now i am a Perfectly satisfied Nexus 7 Customer.
Google... You are Awesome
I read all the time on my iPad 3 and my eyes never hurt. Not sure how better calibrated colors are causing you problems reading PDF files.
I never really saw much of a huge difference between the vibrance of displays with the n7 vs other tablets... And this is coming from someone who's gets yearly for blindness tests. Glad to hear it works for you though!

I agree. My big brother & his wife has a Ipad 1 (mom & me got for wife's bday), which I sometimes use when at their house. That thing is a PAIN. I much prefer my Nexus 7, much better to use and hold in hand. Now my big b uses my Nexus EVERYTIME I'm at his house.
Poor Ipad

N7 screen is great ,but Ipad 2 better than N7 .
Here's what many professional analysis results found regarding the Nexus 7.
The display "hardware" is exceptional!!! There is no debate there.
But the firmware display calibration is "lousy" and thus impacts the display negatively for those that are wanting a much better color match. So if Google fixed this in a future update, then the display would move to the forefront of the 7" pack.
Here's hoping that an update results the calibration issues and pushes this display to the top of the 7" pack.
I have a KFHD7 and N7 in hand right now. Side by side, they are almost comparable. The N7 auto brightness is very aggressive and keeps the screen very dimmed. If you adjust your own brightness, the colors on the N7 will come through, however the KFHD has more contrast creating slightly more vibrant colors and deeper blacks. Something like that could be fixed with color calibration software. I'm honestly liking the N7 over the KFHD. Yes, the KFHD has better colors and definitely better sound, but I like the size and thinness of the N7. Feels much lighter and less bulky.

LCD screen door effect?

Anyone noticing a screen door effect with their LCD screen? Mine definitely has it, wondering if this is normal. My last two phones have been AMOLED, so I'm not sure.
Do you mean like this?
Nexus 4 has a pattern on the display.

No, it's not dots like the digitizer. It's very fine horizontal and vertical lines like seen on some cheap TN panel monitors.
Unfortunately it's so fine I doubt I could capture it with a picture. But it seems to detract from the sharpness of the screen.
Guessing it's just me. I assume if I think my Galaxy Nexus screen looks better than the Nexus 4, then I probably got a defective Nexus 4. RMA time it seems.
I'm cursed. Had to RMA my Galaxy Nexus a couple times because of the purple effect. My Nexus 7 because of the lifted glass, now this. Ugh.
If I look close, I can make out a very slight screen door effect at times. I'm guessing all of them have this to some extent, but maybe it's worse on yours if it's so noticeable as to bother you.

You are right, it didn't. I think after using a while, I started seeing past it. Then I was messing around with my Galaxy Nexus and tablet. Then went back to the phone and I can notice those lines again.
It also depends on what I'm looking at. It really stands out looking at the XDA forums, on the brown colors (I'm using the XDA 2010 theme).

Boy do I miss the blacks...

I'm guessing many N4 owners were previously using an S3, Galaxy Nexus, Note (like me) or any other device with an amoled display. I just compared my screen (On the Clock app in night mode) with my dad's One S side by side and although I knew the blacks would never be as good on the N4, it hit me hard - the blacks suck.
I guess that can sound very wrong if taken out of context but in my opinion LG could have done better here, I'd like to hear what you guys think.

Haha I don't believe in taboos, I live and feed on internet controversy. I highly doubt anyone can say they prefer the N4 IPS black to amoled black, colours are a different argument but blacks - hands down amoled.
You're wrong in guessing that most people came from an AMOLED screen. I am coming from a One X and the LCDs are beautiful. To each his own.
There are pros and cons to both technologies. *shrug*

your complaining about a physical constraint of an IPS panel. You can't compare amoled black because it doesn't produce black, its just off.

Edit: if you compare this IPS to maybe the iPhone IPS then we can have a discussion

criticism of an already known fact.
the OP stresses an advantage of AMOLEDs and dismisses the various great aspects of LCDs like sharpness, bright display, less power consumption.. etc. he should have known what he was sacrificing when he chose to buy a phone with an LCD display. pointless thread.
The blacks are about as good as it gets on an LCD, TBH. They'll never be as good as AMOLED and if that's important to you then just stick with AMOLED. I've found that I spend a very small amount of time looking at screens with predominantly dark backgrounds, while I spend way more time looking at screens with white backgrounds, like webpages. And the whites on AMOLED are sickly looking.
After a year of having the GNex I can definitively say I like the display on the n4 much better. I am still using a solid black background on my n4 and the blacks seem plenty black to me. Putting them side by side I can definitely see a slight difference in black level but overall the n4 display looks better.

I'm coming from a Galaxy S with an AMOLED then a S2 with an AMOLED over the last two and a half years. This screen looks wonderful to me. I haven't sat down and examined the difference between the two screens in different conditions, and tested it or whatever else, but I am quite happy with the screen. I don't think I'm just being a fanboy here and rather being realistic, and I've showed my friends too and they can't see anything wrong with the Nexus' screen.
