I got n4 today.I have straight talk with my nexus 4. I already had att sim. I got average speed of 5mb down and 1-.1.5 up. I know tmobile is suppose to be faster hpsa+ network. I've been with tmobile and att the speeds where i live and they are close to same for me. I bought tmobile sim just to see. I averaging 12-14 mb down and 2-3.5 mb up. I would recommend if go straight talk route get tmobile if you can. Check your coverage but tmobile is faster I live in a medium size market.

How u get a Straight Talk T-Mobile micro sim card??
Im on straight talk att and it works for what I need. T mobile really doesn't have anything out side of the interstate here in Kentucky.
Don't see that changing anytime soon.

T-Mobile has a better HSDPA network in urban areas, but based on many years with both carriers it is safe to say AT&T has a wider 3G coverage and better signal penetration in buildings.
I'm on Straight Talk using At&t sim and will be trying T-Mobile sim next.
Only complaint that I've had is once in a while I get an "access forbidden "message while using the web. I've researched it and have found no answer.

That sounds like a reason not to sign up with Solavei at all, not a reason to sign up with them quickly.
Also there's the fact that it's a pyramid scheme.
Dumb question here....
By trying out T-Mobile with Straight Talk and the N4 ... after cutting the SIM card it will automatically enable up to HSPA 42 speeds?(based on network connection)

Make sure your APN settings are correct, and then yes, you should get HSPA 42 when in available areas.
I've been on ST on my Atrix for a few months and don't have any complaints. TMobile's coverage map only shows 2g in my area or I would give that a try. Data speeds aren't the best but the money I save over ATT is incredible. I usually pull 2.5-3.5 mbps down and 1.0-1.5 mbps up. Speedtests can be a little funky because ST proxies all traffic through Chicago.
I'm also using straight talk and until last night, my speeds were just horrible ( 0.25 Mbps ) but then I called them an they reset my data settings. Now I pull between 2mb -5 mbps. :winning:

Remove the proxy from your APN. Solves this and for most it seems like the chance of throttling goes down.

Been using ST with a TMobile sim. Just checked the coverage for AT&T and found out they actually have 3g and 4g in my area! Just placed an order for an AT&T sim!
On tmobile i get 20 mbs in atlanta so tmobile rocks here.

What are your APN settings?
I have
APN: att.mvno
Proxy: not set
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Proxy: 66.209.11.33
mms port: 80
MCC: 310

Does AT&T not have up to 42HSPA? On ST?
Toggle airplane mode instead of reboot. You can also leave Proxy blank.
AT&T does not have HSPA+ 42 in their network.
Um, if you want prepaid on T-Mobile, why not just get their prepaid plan? Its only 100 minutes, but you also get 3 GB more data for only $30 a month

I was looking at the 18MBPS LTE speeds in canada and was confused. I'm getting a consistant 14-17 MBPS on HSPA+. What's with the rush for LTE?
I got 17.56Mbps. However, according to the LTE thread, some people in Canada can get up to ~40-50 Mbps...
Did a speed test the other day on T-Mobile HSPA+ and I got over 20. Not bad considering my home internet connection is 25. My Nexus 4 is lightning fast on HSPA+, I'm not seeing the need to switch to LTE either for at least a couple more years.
I have reached 21 Mbps download and 3 Mbps upload. LTE is average 30+ download and upload.
HSPA+ saves battery and LTE kills it.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
The reason LTE is better is that is generally has lower latency speeds and absolutely has faster upload speeds.
In the US, AT&T has terrible 3G speeds. But T-mobile's HSPA network is generally really fast. So it really depends on your provider. And yes, LTE has very little latency. But if you are on T-mobile and have great coverage, I don't think LTE would be a big change. Unless you are tethering, LTE vs HSPA+ is not a huge difference.

I haven't had super stellar HSPA+ speeds around town (Portland, OR, on T-Mobile) but just now I did one and got 24.2Mbps down, 5Mbps up. :good: Good enough for me by far. That's faster than my home internet.
Edit: Wait, that was my home internet. Up too late last night... 13Mbps down, 1.5Mbps up. That's still not bad.
If we do enable the LTE part of the phone, does that mean our battery life would be depleting faster?

I guess a lot of people hoping for LTE are on AT&T. I get a bit 2-3 Mbps down, 1-1.5 Mbps up (250-375 KB/s and 125-188 KB/s, I don't get why people use bits for bandwidth when everyone is clearly more familiar with bytes...).
I wonder if you need a smartphone plan on AT&T to get LTE on an off-network-branded device. I'm using MediaNET and I'd rather pay $10 for unlimited 3G than $25 for 2GB of 4G. If we can eventually use LTE incognito on AT&T and keep our MediaNET plans, I'll be happy. Doesn't really make a difference to me either way. 3G speeds are more than good enough for browsing. I don't mind a little buffering if I'm streaming HD video on the go.
I have vzw lte and tmo hspa (via straight talk) with both I see ~10Mbps in and around southern california, so I too see no need to rush out for an LTE phone AND I figure the n5 will have it so in a year this will all be moot.

LTE is king for latency.
I play a lot of counterstrike, and there used to be a regular who'd play over VZW LTE. Guy had lower latency than I did over cable. More important, he seemed completely fluid in the game-- no jitter or packet loss. Completely playable. That's huge.
Your thread title's pretty misleading. There is a big difference between 16.5MBPS and 16.5MbPS.

Yes it'll work with both AT&T or T-Mobile or any of their MVNOS but when you're outside of a refarmed area, you're more than likely only going to have Edge speeds. Just wanted to bring this to your awareness, Verizon's started to broadcast their AWS or Band 4 LTE network for testing purposes. If your Nexus 4 has old radio, put it in LTE Only mode, and manually search for networks.
If it shows up as 311480, please report here.
So far San Diego is live, although the user used another T-Mobile Band 4 capable LTE device to scan.
Cool but useless. There's no CDMA fall back for calling and text. So you'd have internet access and that's it. Stupid Verizon and their CDMA crap.

But what's the point. I suppose you could use all the workarounds to do VoIP but normal calling and texting is a no go since there's no CDMA fall back. My point is Verizon is only half in. Verizon has nearly nationwide Band 4 spectrum holdings. Completely unused, just sitting there.
Way more than AT&T for example who's divested most of their licenses to T-Mobile as a breakup fee.
And also way more free, unused AWS (Band 4) than T-Mobile which has to keep and maintain 20Mhz chunks for their existing HSPA+42 network for at least 1-2years.
That said, east of Mississippi Verizon is deploying 2x20Mhz LTE that can push 150Mbps on Cat 4 equipment. Just saying...
West of Mississippi they're mostly 2x15Mbps capable of over 100Mbps, with some markets with 2x10Mhz.
To put that in the perspective for you, their current nationwide Band 13 LTE is 2x10Mhz which is currently twice the capacity of T-Mobile's live LTE in most of their markets (2x5Mhz).
The point is, you can have your existing device besides being a smartphone also acting as a Verizon MiFi, if you ever wish to get access to Verizon's new stupid fast network with no one on it...

hey, it's better than nothing. And testing things like that are fun, don't you think?
It's been widely reported that once they were done with their nationwide rollout of LTE later this year that they would then start using their band 4 aws holdings to fill in the holes and to augment their existing LTE service during peak loads.

This is really awesome for people like me that only have Verizon's LTE in my area. If this could actually work, I'd switch to it, at least for a month; just to mess around with, and to blow people's minds when I tell them I have a GSM phone on Verizon's network (I know, not that impressive to the average XDA user, but to the ignorant masses, doing something like that is crazy).
The voice is no issue for me as I've used a tablet plan the past 2 months with a VoIP alternative.
The only problem is that Verizon only has pay-as-you-go 3G plans, you'd have to sign up for a regular LTE plan with a 2 year agreement and they are expensive. This might be an option for someone who's already a Verizon customer to try but not practical for most people.

AT&T always had the HSPA+ 4G on pre-paid and just added LTE. You still have to have an LTE plan and live in an area with AWS, Chicago will be mostly AWS as AT&T didn't have a lot of 700 MHz licenses in that area but that's one of the few places that you will find it.
You can still scan for Verizon's LTE on your Nexus even if you don't have their SIM. At least you'll know if your area has that option available. They're still in the very early stage of deployment, San Diego report is literally the very first report of Verizon's Band 4 network broadcasting.
They won't be deploying on Band 4 nationwide from the get go, it's gonna be metro areas with heavy traffic first, then building inside-out.
It will be data only since Nexus 4 doesn't have CDMA radios, but as I said earlier, it's beneficial to have this option if you ever need another carrier for data hotspot.
Oh, and if you have Verizon's LTE iPad for instance, that's a prepaid service, you can totally use that SIM on any other LTE capable device.
Welp, I don't have any Band IV in my area so that came a quick halt.

Now that we can SIM-unlock our Sprint HTC Ones, I've been curious about buying a prepaid a T-Mobile SIM to use when I can't get LTE or decent 3G. My friends on T-Mobile get great HSPA speeds (even when it's just HSPA 14.4) around Chicago, usually in places where my data sucks.
Ideally, I would like to pop a T-Mobile SIM card in my phone, but still receive calls and texts on my Sprint number without setting up some kind of forwarding service. Unfortunately, I suspect that SIM cards don't work in this fashion, though I am hopeful because the removal of the SIM on the Sprint HTC One simply cuts off support for LTE (probably because the only purpose of the SIM card in the Sprint HTC One is to authenticate LTE, but I'm not totally certain).
Alternatively, could I jump between my Sprint service and T-Mobile service if I installed a T-Mobile SIM by using the *#*#4636#*#* menu? Say I chose "EvDo Only," would I connect to Sprint 3g and get calls and texts on my Sprint number and simply select "WCDMA Preferred" when I want to use T-Mobile's HSPA network?

So you can leave a T-Mobile card in there and just switch between Sprint 3G/voice as well as T-Mo 3G/voice at will? That could be useful; for example, my favorite bar is a total dead zone for Sprint data, but T-Mobile flies. When I know I'm going there, I could pop a T-Mobile SIM, switch to that to check websites and whatnot, but switch it back to periodically check my text messages, right?
That I am not sure. I only tested with a friend's sim card from his nexus 4. With the Sprint sim card removed I was still on sprint cdma but once I went into the available GSM networks and chose T-Mobile, it registered and I was no longer on Sprint at all and it shows GSM icon up where my signal is at. Made a phone call and phone call came thru under my friend's phone number instead of my Sprint number. I'm not sure about sms I did not really played around with it long enough as I was just testing if the unlock really worked.

Ehh... Not really "4G" since the Sprint HTC One only supports LTE on 1900MHz band 25. T-Mobile uses 1900/2100MHz for HSPA, and the Sprint One only supports 14.4Mbps on those HSPA frequencies (much slower than T-Mobile's phones support).

I see what you're saying, and I think that you're right, but their HSPA network (which they suddenly started calling "4G" strictly for marketing reasons) is significantly slower than most LTE networks. Only phones that would run on HSPA 42.2Mbps would give Sprint phones a run for their money. HSPA was never classified as even being a pre-4G network by the ITU. I think that only WiMAX and LTE hold that distinction. Anything that's HSPA but marketed as "4G" is a lie.

If you're in a Sprint 3g only area then t-mobile if on 1900 hspa is still faster. If you integrated your sprint number with Google voice the you can still get your sprint text messages from the Google voice app and use an app like talkatone or groove ip for voice over ip

So I am not intending to get into a large debate about the HSPA ver of 4G vs the LTE networks other than to say that the top four carriers are not really using LTE to its truest potential because they're limiting backhaul connectivity to keep costs down. So that LTE network you're connected to doesn't have the fastest ethernet connection it should so in many cases it is "possible" for 42MB HSPA network to actually be faster in its actual deployment.

Hmm... I might just stroll over to a T-Mobile store today, activate/pick up a SIM for $10, and spend another $3 for the daily pay-as-you-go plan. 200MB for $3 isn't bad if you need it in a pinch...
I've heard of these issues, does it happen if you stay in the same spot? Have you tried different modes in the *#*#4636#*#* menu other than "WCDMA Preferred"?

yes i tryed evrything, sprint does block domestic carriers, sucksssssssss ughhh.
I was wondering what kind of data speeds are being seen by nexus 5 devices on AT&T LTE data network.
I've included an image of my speed test result, usually around that mark with full bars, drops down to between 8-15 Mbps when on 2-3 bar.
located in the central valley, California

That's about the speeds I reach here in Philadelphia suburbs. Unfortunately though in downtown no matter how many bars I have speed drops drastically, possibly due to amount of people with cell phones and buildings.
I rarely drop to 3g but when I its around 4-5mbps download which is considerably better than what I had with Verizon in Philadelphia.
I usually get between 6 and 10 in Salem Oregon

Coming from an S4
I get pretty close to the same speeds.. I get horrible service at home with the N5, usually 1-2 bars, and average 8MB down, 7 up. Signal strength was better on my S4. In an area where signal is good, I've reached 60MB numerous times...

I'm in Southern California and average about 4mb down and almost 1 up. Thats with full bars of LTE. What APN are you using. PLEASE SHARE!!! My wife has the GS5 on att and is averaging about 52mb down and 22up. We both have the same APN I dont understand it.
I get those speeds on straight talk running on at&t

I get about 30mpbs down in middle GA. Not too bad.
Atlanta during rush hour traffic a free days ago.
Orlando, FL here and I've been getting terrible speeds. Less than 4 down with 3+ bars. One time I was getting full bars LTE and I was getting like 0.5mbps down. I'm about ready to switch to T-Mobile.

THATS WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY Better than I get in Sonora, Ca! But we are in the foothills with less people and less priority for upgrades to their networks.

anything over 2mbps with decent ping is honestly plenty fast for me.
Currently 12-13 in center of Silicon Valley - 2-3 in the suburbs of the same. I've called ATT to be sure I'm provisioned on the correct APN and plan for LTE.
What's sucked is that ATT has obviously either turned off or not built out capacity in more heavily residential areas in SV, perhaps with the assumption that people just use wifi at home. I'd had a solid 23 at work and 18 in the suburbs first few months of 2014.
Just for grins, here are the settings I got from ATT about a year ago:
Name: ATT US HSPA+
APN: phone
Proxy: Not set
Port: Not set
Username: Not set
Password: Not set
Server: Net set
MMSC: http://mmsc.mobile.att.net
MMS proxy: proxy.mobile.att.net
MMS Port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Authentication type: None
APN type: default, admin, mms
APN Protocol: IPv4
APN Roaming Protocol: IPv4/IPv6
APN: Enable / Disable: APN enabled (greyed out)
Bearer: Unspecified
MVNO Type: None
MVNO Value: Not set

Even with this connection XDA doesn't load very well.....then I go a mile down the road to another tower

do the speedtest and then immediately load XDA.
it might be an XDA problem. XDA does not use much badnwidth

I will say that using Orlando's server seems to give very inaccurate speeds. When i use that server i get around 15-17 .
I usually use Maccleny* when i do my tests here in FL. (** not sure how it is exactly spelled)
Best speed I've ever gotten on AT&T. Went to the store and copied the apn in the nexus6.
