Hey guys, so I am picking up a galaxy note today from a friend. Its currently locked to orange UK and Im on o2 (going to giffgaff, way better deals) as I have sold my S2, I'll need access to it ASAP. I am happy to install a custom rom on to it. (I know how to root, backup using titanium backup, but I have only ever put 1 rom on a phone, an xperia x10 running cyanogenmod) So what I am wondering is, will installing a custom rom carrier unlock the phone? And what rom can you recommend? I know CM10 is out, but I've been out of the rom scene for a while so don't know what other roms have to offer. Preferably, I'd like one that gives you the features of the note 2, I read some roms have those apps built in.
Many thanks
steve
If you want Note2 features, you will need a JB leak.
The latest is the LS7, there are several custom roms out there based on it.
If you do some searching around, i am sure you will also be able to find some unlock
threads.
use galaxy s unlock free from play store
And test out RocketROM v3 too ! has all the note 2 features
Thanks guys! RocketROM v3... is it fully stable and does everything work on it? is it as good as CM10? Thanks!
Yeah everything works and it is stable also !
Difficult to compare with CM as they are 2 completely different ROMs. Best advice I can give is to just try them all. its the only way to find out that suits you.
could you link me to the unlock play store app? in case the one I used is different... thanks!

It requires root yes, But you will need root if you want a custom rom anyway.
It does work, Ive used it myself along with many others on here
Thanks! will have to do this tomorrow then - if it requires rooting - because Im picking it up and going to work straight after - if it was just a simple download and run, I could do it in the car tethered to my dads phone. Thanks!
Before I go, is there an app for rooting the note without the need of a pc? like a oneclickroot? Just, if I can root it in the car on my way to work, I can then Unlock it and have the use of a phone for when I am finished work.
Cheers!
What you can do is head over to development section, Download Philz kernel (on your phone) then boot into recovery and flash it by selecting 'install update.zip' this will install a safe kernel along with CWM and will also root your phone.
Then you can flash which ever ROM & Kernel you wish

Thanks! The unlock worked! Will be romming it up soon cheers again

hi guys,
ive recently bought a samsung galaxy s gt i9000 off ebay. im chuffed to bits with it, i had upgraded from my first android ( tmobile pulse) which was abysmally slow
Since having my sgs ive installed kies and updated the firmware twice, i am now on 2.3.5.
The phone seems much much faster than my pulse so i am very happy, and for this reason im wondering what are the benefits to me of rooting it and installing a custom rom? ive looked through some threads and theres alot of roms to choose from, and they confuse me with talks of pits etc.
i had rooted my pulse with custom roms flashed using clockwork mod, but this seems far more complicated. The phone seems fast enough for what i need it for, is there any point in rooting+flashing a custom rom?
edit: also as far as i can tell most of the custom roms use android 2.3.3/2.3.4? so wouldnt that be a step backwards?
thanks in advance!
Most roms uses JVT the newest gb. If you are satisfied with no root there's no need to root but if you want to do more with your phone go with root.

Rooting is essentially the equivalent of getting admin rights on your phone. Some apps may need root access (such as titanium backup), as they modify system files and so on.
Custom roms vary, they might simply be a package of tweaks/optimizations and themes, or a complete rework of the firmware (like CM).
If you're happy with everything there's no real need to do either
Hi, I use the half way method, I stick with stock odexed jvt as stock is the most reliable. I then use a custom kernel for speed. I use semaphore 1.8.2bm. i use themes to make it look better, and tweaks to make it run faster. I find this to be the best compromise. You need root to create a full backup, and apply many tweaks. You get root from custom kernels

Thanks for all the replies. Could you link me to a guide for this please? much appreciated

Hello.. I am just new here in xda.. I just bought my note 4 months ago and I think I am not maximing its potentials..My phone is already rooted.
I just want to ask your opinions on how can I make my phone cool/useful?
What rom are you on? Personally I believe the note should be more tablet like which is why I like cm based roms especially paranoid android 2.50. Gives you the option to have different display modes per app.
I also prefer a vanilla feel that helps with battery as all bloatware is removed.
This is impossible to advise really without knowing what you use the note for.

If u r rooted, you are already utilizing 50-60% of note's potentials

Flash 4.1.2 rom
You will feel like you have a note 2
Customising the Galaxy Note GT-N7000
It really depends what you mean by cool.........
Super fast - using kernels optimised for performance such as HydraCore
Bleeding edge Jelly Bean ROMs such as Paranoid Android
Rock solid TouchWiz ROMs such as Rocket ROM ICS and now JellyBean (based on recent leaked Samsung ROMs)
EyeCandy-tastic ROMs such as RocketMIUI
Pay attention to what these different ROMs don't do when you are considering which to flash and play with.
E.G. a lot of the stripped down ROMs and those based on CyanoGenMod don't have the Samsung productivity apps.
So if you love S-Memo, S-Note, S-Voice, look at the TouchWiz ROMs.
There are alternatives to all the Samsung productivity apps in the Google Play Store, if you find the ROM you want to stick with doesn't have them.
You are rooted, so you just need to get to grip with some of the basics of flashing ROMs..
Sujal has a great thread to take you through the whole process from out of the box to custom ROM and custom Kernel.
Chasmodo has a great thread which will help you understand what kernels are safe on the Note.
It is advisable to make a Nandroid backup of your current build through CWM before you start playing with different ROMs.
Then you can restore your working build through CWM if anything goes pear shaped.
The cool thing is that once you have got to grips with flashing and understand safe kernels, then you can flash as many different ROMs as you like until you find the one that suits you.
NOTE: Custom ROMs do not update OTA (Over The Air), through Kies or any other official update mechanism. You need to keep an eye on the thread for the custom ROM you are using and flash the updates from the thread.
Just in case you ever lose root (it does happen):
The best up to date guide for rooting is Dr. Ketan's Rooting Guide. (in my opinion)
Dr. Ketan really knows his stuff and will be happy to answer questions when he is around.
Phil3759 has another great rooting guide which may also help, and has potentially simpler methods for rooting.
You will need to pay attention to the N7000 specific elements of this thread to avoid any unintentional bricking.
Hi,
my friend bought this phone and wants me to "fix it up" for him. I am completelly unfamiliar with this phone and Samsung in general, so I need a little help.
I have scoured these forums for the last hour and there is TONS of information available. It's really difficult to judge which posts are outdated and which are still working.
Basically what I want is this:
1. Root the phone
2. Install CWM
2. Install latest CM7 for this phone.
I reckon the root works with using SuperOneClick, correct? And for CWM I thought I'm gonna use this?
But I am at a complete loss when it comes to which CM7 to choose, there are tons of them? Can someone recommend me a fresh, stable, debloated and fast CM7 ROM with everything working?
Thanks.
I managed to get root and clockwork mod up and running.
Any ideas for which Rom?

1) For rooting, refer to this thread - http://yagyagaire.blogspot.in/2011/08/how-to-root-samsung-galaxy-popmini.html
It does not matter if it outdated - all you have to do is go to superuser app, and choose update binaries. You will get latest version.
2) For now, i personally don't feel you should use CWM 6. the version i am using (CWM 5) has no bugs and works perfectly. here is the link -
http://yagyagaire.blogspot.in/2012/02/clockwork-mod-touch-for-galaxy-mini-gt.html
3) As for ROMs, there is a large collection out there. It all depends on your choice. For example, if you want:
A stock based ROM choose something like: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1861240
or http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1576996
or http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2074556 (which is CM10.1 - Jellybean)
Or another CM10.1 ROM which works very well - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2227481
Or maybe another interesting ROM which im sure you will like, which has interesting tweaks like android version - 5.0.0.5 (lol)
Cyanogen mod 7 music edition - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329551&highlight=emanon
Or the experience ROM by autoradio, which allow a lot of customization - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2193327
This is another really good ROM - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1754694
PS the question "best ROM" is always being asked and is then subsequently closed by a mod, so read the rules next time
Another thing you should know is NEVER use an app called ROM manger. it will brick your phone.
I supposs this cover everything
Press thanks if i helped
Welcome!
Yesterday brand new P880 landed in my hands. It would be great to get maximum performance from device but I'm new to android. Couple of posts about that on forum wasn't clearly enough for me. I dont want to be guided by the hand because I know that's kind of boring in 882 time's in a row. I want to know what tool and order to use for it?which mod and kernel i should use and what free apps is the best for music and movies? Thank's for help and sorry for my crappy english.

All that is covered 999 times so far and i can tell that you dont like to read forums.
Basicly for best rom you must test couple of them to see witch one fit you the moust i whould recomend JellyBeer - CM 10.1 (latest stable build)-Carbon-ReVolt or any other rom you like to flash and test. For kernels i definetly recomend custom kernel warewolf-iodak-optimus prime kernel. And yes you must test them to see witch one is best for you. Also u can get stock LG rom with some changes and custom kernel running on your device...Afterall you must devote some time to your phone if u want to make it work the way you like.Sorry no easy answer and sollution for your question.
First of all, thank You for answer. Second 'yeah' I'dont like to loose time for searching answer in sea of answers.I know that's annoying to talking about it for 999 times and that's why I'm greatfull. Back to topic, can You tell me what order i should keep to start modding?

Just some quick steps to add > Update to Euro Open 20a > Root > Unlock > Download Rom Manager from Play store>Install Clock Work Mode from it (if you want Touch u have to pay for it (i have regular CWM and everything works fine))> MAKE backup of your current Stock rom (helped me in a couple situations) via CWM>Pick up custom ROM you like flesh it + flash kernel you like and start to have fun
That's almost all i want to know. Where do i get kernel? Is it merged with ROM or is it stand-alone feature? which one goes as first to device?
Hey all
ssup ?
Well I tried searching the forum but somehow wasn't able to find any .....
Nougot based TWRP flash-able , Stock , Rooted Rom for the Nexus
Its nexus so there are no so called bloats in it but still if someone might have made a slimmer rom out of stock , i would love to have that along with proper flashing instructions.
Currently my phone has the latest nightly from Lineage , but i want to experience stock rooted
Thanks in advance
EDIT had another closer look and found that the this ROM has a nougot variant too
[ROM][Stock+][N6F26R-MOB31K]Prerooted-Debloated-Odex-Busybox-Fast & Stable
But still would appreciate if you folks could chip in with your suggestions as well
An easy way to have a slim stock rom is just use the Nexus toolkit, go back to stock rooted and use something like Titanium Backup to delete the apps you don't want/need. That's what I've done and use my N6 without a Sim card as an offline navigation and music player with Here Maps and Google Music. I use to build slim ROMs for the HTC Rezound back in the day... Maybe if I can get a few free minutes I could cook up a slim flashable stock rom. No promises though as I tend to work 6 days a week anymore.
