Display issue: hardware or software? - Nexus 7 General

Hey guys,
today I bought N7 16GB, I updated to 4.2 JB via official OTA.
I noticed a display issue, here the pics:
These are two photos:

}
So I thought that was a hardware problem thought I can see the issue only if in this type of screen (when I have options, 'radiobuttons').
I tried to make a screenshot, here it is
It is not apparent as the photos but the bug is still here (everytime changes shape)
, you would zoom to see it better.
I think is a software issue, although it is really strange and inconceivable, becouse you can stiil see in a screenshot.
If it is a screen issue, so hardware, I'll bring back the nexus 7 to take another one.
I have C90 SSN
Do you have this issue?
Thanks and sorry for bad english

do you mean the smudgy artifact running midway up from the bottom on the rightish side?

You can try factory resetting or updating...
Weird but it could be hardware. I really couldn't tell you. Perhaps try using one of those stuck pixel apps that flash multiple colors and stuff. I'm not saying that would fix it but it might shoe whether it is obvious more often then you think or just when options.
It moving around looks more like a software bug but could be a funky connection too.
If exchanging it isn't complicated, I would recommend a swap. Else try changing roms a few times.

I made a screen of my n7, no issue here. Seems to be some weird hw rev stuff or a faulty framebuffer.
I enhanced my screenshot and yours to proof all the skeptics that it's clearly not there.

This is an issue with 4.2. It even rotates with the window in landscape mode.
I have this on my Galaxy Nexus as well and I just started noticing it after the update. It definitely wasn't there in 4.1.
See here for a screenshot on the Galaxy Nexus with the same issue.
It'll probably get fixed in 4.2.1, in the meantime, if it's bothering you that much, you can roll back to 4.1.2.

I made a reset. Same issue.

Try substituting your own background consisting of a solid color (not white or black - maybe something in a soft patel color) and see if it's still there.

Tried Yellow, Red and Green. Same issue

In August, I bought an openbox Playbook that had severe ghosting on the LCD. It almost looked like burn-in. It turned out that unit was the store demo unit. I returned it and got a new unit which was good. Ended up returning it for other issues though.
Was yours a brand new sealed in the box unit?

Sure it was, I bough it in a physical shop. I just hope they will understand the problem and give me another one.

Could be the glue used to bond the screen to the digitiser??? Similar issues with early Galaxy s2's.
I'm not sure if the lamination method is the same as super amoled, just thinking out loud

Because glue between the digitizer and the display is usually visible on screenshots.
Makes perfect sense.

I have a CAOK Nexus 7, bought last week, and i also have this weird issue, but only into apex launcher popup menu.
I've tried solid color backgrounds (red, green, blue, white, black) and with these backgrounds the issue disappears.
Even solid backgrounds of the same grey color as the apex menu didn't show the problem anymore.
So i'm a little confused since i updated to 4.2 as soon as i bought the tab i'll try to come back to 4.1.2 and report if the issue is there yet.

I can confirm that this is a software issue due to upgrade to 4.2.
These are two screenshot with 4.2 on the left and 4.1.2 on the right.
Rolling back to 4.1.2 made the problem disappear.

Hi, why just few people have this issue? What is your serial number? I want to understand what is the problem because I have 7 days to bring the tablet back and I cannot wait to get possible update.
Thanks.

I have it on mine as well. I just figured it was an issue with that background png as it only appears on that background. If you use an app like screen test you won't see those marks anywhere. I kinda just think it's the background image that's jacked. I what makes me think this even more is if you look at the screen shot the op posted and look at mine the pattern is exactly the same

Hi, my serial starts with CAOK, but as i checked by rolling back to 4.1.2 this is an issue i encounter only in 4.2.
Why so few people here give an answer about this? Mainly beacuse there are few that already have 4.2 and have looked carefully at this menu background, imho. The majority here has a modded 4.1.2 rom.
How can we explain either way that this problem was on my apex launcher widget selection menu when i was with 4.2 and now that i am on 4.1.2 it is gone away?

Its an issue on 4.2 Roms. I've narrowed it down so two things. 4.2 has new AA options that can cause it, but I believe it is a faulty PNG or shading. It'll be fixed very soon, like the awful gradient on 4.0.1. Its still there but much improved.
Don't return. Your device unless you have other issus with it. The reason it shows up on your Apex (Nova does it too) is because those apps are calling from the system for that background image. The popup isn't contained within the app, the app calls the action, the system supplies the background and lines and such and the app fills in the rest. Now it appears to primarily appear on the widget picker background on 3rd party launchers. It very well could be that they are calling an old protocall that is now defunct. On 4.0+ the wallpaper picker is white.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy Note Camera Problem - Pink Spot

Hi,
Bought a new Samsung Galaxy Note a few days ago.
Turn out it has a big problem with its camera - a big pink or red spot appears on all pictures I take.
I'm attaching an example image.
Is there a solution for this issue? Setting? Firmware update?
Or am I stuck with this?

Sorry to hear that. If only you knew and checked b4 buying... Galaxxy S2 or Galaxy Note. Because it is considered as characteristic of the SS product, not consider as errors. SO, you CAN'T fix it completely.
To my knowleage, there are some shipments of Galaxy Note have this "Pink spot", other shipments may not. Also some heavy "Pink spot", some lighter.
Usually, it appears in some fixed conditions, as: low (not enough) light... So many posts out there on interrnet talking about this matter.
You should reset all your settings in camera/video recorder to default options to limit it:
- Exposure value: 0
- Screen Mode: None
- Effects: None
- White balance: Auto
- Outdoor vissibility: off
- ISO: Auto
- Auto contrast: Off
- Blink detection: Off
Thanks, this seems to reduce the spot to the mininum. But it's still there. Is it a problem with the matrix?
I knew they had this problem on SGS2 but I thought they have fixed it since. It's amazing that they didn't fix it on a high end device like the note..

i had this pink spot on all my devices more or less. i agree that it can be reduced to minimum and wont appear on all pictures (depending on light and/or white balance), but it is definitely there.
if i remember right this is due to optics quality, some sort of chromatic aberration perhaps? also on the SGS2 there were at least 3 different cam module manufacturers: one was sony, one samsung and the 3rd i do not remember. sony's modules were the best ones! you could see which module you have by analyzing the cam-fw names!
if the note also has different cam manufacturers i do not know, but this would perhaps also explain why such things are different...
There is still a chance I can have the phone replaced in the shop I have bought it from.
Is there a way to know what camera versions there are on the note? Which one is better?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA App
Cant blame him for not knowing, its not even on the box that says this 'feature' and also big review sites dont really cover this as they might not receive sample units for making 'unfavorable' reviews.

This has been going on since the Galaxy S2 days and Im not really surprised if this continues upto the Galaxy S3, a lot of people are spreading the B.S. that this is 'normal' just like the screen issues.
So anyway reference thread from the Galaxy S2:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1443658
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1098834
I never really checked the camera firmware on my friend's note but his does not have any pink spot at all after taking a similar picture on a white piece of paper with limited lighting.
Consider this as a hardware limitation or a pure defect, I dont really care this is just a minor issue for me but I understand this is a major concern for others.
Wow. The issues described in the GSII forum linked below are exactly the troubles I am having with the Note's camera.
It's minor in the broad scheme of things but major considering a premium device such as this should not have such a glaring weakness.

^^^ The S2 and Note use the SAME CAMERA, that explains why the pink-spot returned on a newer model.
If this issue is known since sgs2 and wasn't fixed in sgn samsung just don't give a damn about their clients.

Im just finding out about this problem - didnt know it had been an issue on the S2 until now. My Note has the pink tint, Im not happy about it. It should not be still happening on a £500 device!
No longer a problem?
As there have been no further responses since Feb....does this mean...
- the problem is not widespread
- the problem has been resolved with later firmware
- current devices don't have this problem
Anyone know what the likely scenario is?
As far as I know there was no fix for the problem.
I'm not sure how widespread this is but its really annoying me. I have no Idea what I can do about it.
Ir really does feel like Samsung just don't give a damn about their customers.
Hi! I just bought a note and it has Even in not too dark rooms.. I think samsung will change the cam in warranty.. https://docs.google.com/folder/d/0B4HRrrESrIu1ejFHbHg0a1Y3eWc/edit# - photos
Me too
i read in S2 forum that if you put the phone on "Movie" mode it will decrease the pink spot and it does but stills there and its very very annoying
I hope we all send to Samsung about the problem and they may solve it, Nokia did solve it with firmware. Source #
Same problem on my white i717.
Going to contact Samsung for a warranty claim.

IMHO, the problem is in every gnote unit, and it's not firmware problem, but hardware, current devices do have this problem, until now, i've checked every units my friends own, and the demo unit in the store, but still, i can't help but to notice the pink spot, i think, maybe it will be fixed in note 2.
IMHO, to samsung, this isn't really a problem, because it's not really that visible, and who will take a picture in a plain white object anyway?but we do right, lol, if you take picture on low light room, you'll see the spot, and i've tried to take my gf picture, on the face, and it has that blushing effect on her, the only solution is taking pictures not in a low light area, and white object,

Hello one and all, this is Paranoid Android for the P7510! If you've seen any of the other PA threads, they're a bit swankier than this. That'll come in time, no worries! This is still very much my first build - both personally and in the case of the ROM. Things might be a bit squiffy, but that's to be expected, I went into this completely dumb and learnt as I went
Still. It works. My tab hasn't exploded. Give it a try, tell me what works and what doesn't. I'm learning PA settings as much as any of you guys will be
What doesn't work:
Everything non-functional in CM10.
Can't find the button to enable MTP. That might be a problem with me and the button being moved?
Download here!
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/23306362/pa_p4wifi-2.00-27AUG2012-2325.zip
Installation instructions:
As normal, make sure to install GApps. Any plain old jb ones will do, which is awesome.
Once booted (a black screen after the boot animation seems usual) you'll need to enable the navigation bar. To get it you have to go to settings>system>navigation bar and then turn the option on in there. If anyone can tell me how to have this enabled by default, that'll be awesome.
I've been strongly considering selling my tab to get the n7, but with cm10 quickly catching up and now Paranoid being here I may have to rethink the move. Thanks for this! Downloading now..

I use it on my phone too. Between the Optimus 2X and the Tab 10.1, it does seem more sensible to be using PA on the big screen. Apps scale up better than they do down, if you see what I mean.
Ok so I flashed it and it works pretty nicely, but I think it doesn't scale very well in some areas or functions as well as cm10, such as with multitasking. Nonetheless, I'm excited to see where this ROM will go.

Forgive me for this but what the point of paranoid Android on a tablet? On a phone it's pretty useful since I can enable the tablet side of apps without going full tablet UI, but what about on a tablet? Most horribly scaled apps can already be rescaled using that arrow thing in the combined bar.
Also, I'll try to look into that MTP issue for ya (don't totally rely on me though). I feel like I've forgetten everything so I want to brush up.

Thanks good sir. The best way I can put it is manipulation of the system ui. In that I mean you can have the device running at stock dpi, but get the style of the Nexus 7. People may think I'm crazy for that, but i like the notification shade instead of a button, and the launcher in phone mode is just so much better, especially when done right. Of course it's subjective preference, but it's an option and I find that some aspects are far better than stock tablet ui.
In other news, yes, the multitasking is completely wrong, I'm fiddling around with settings now, but will have to ask more knowledgeable peeps if I can't solve it.
What did you port this ROM from? There's a hitload of problems that have to be worked out.. Plus Android seems to be trolling me, this is what logcat puts out when I enable / disable the navigation bar;
Code:
D/WifiService( 283): setWifiEnabled: true pid=1051, uid=1000
As to how the hell that can even happen, no idea.
Anyway I hear default settings are in SettingsProvider.apk but I didn't see the ones I was looking for. Multitasking isn't exactly broken, it's trying to use the phone UI. If you look at the power menu you'll see it's stupidly oversized because of the the phone Ui. In fact that can all probably be changed or fixed in Paranoid Settings.
On the sad side, launchers are extremely laggy. What gives? I hate lag
EDIT: Super smooth in the tablet mode. Something is up, making the Phablet UI super laggy.
Downloading... i know this is in development but i want to see what to expect seems promising

Hi friends...all the project is great,I've not tested it though...
don't think I've lost my mind but for the MTP, I think you must:go to settings-->storage-->the menu button in the upper right corner of the screen-->USB PC connection -->connect as a media device(MTP) may this help...

Yeah...the WiFi is odd. I grabbed some files from maple syrup to actually make WiFi work. I'll look into it later on.
Anyway, the source should be pretty clean. All of it was from Pershoots github for the tab and PA's for their stuff. The only niggle is that I have the Paranoidpreferences apk from the Gnexus in there. It's closed source and the N7 one doesn't give us phablet mode (because it is one already)
Edit: How odd, the MTP option just suddenly appeared after a reboot. Going to have to figure out why...

Also, is anyone getting bad lag in the Phablet mode? The launcher lag is crazy' but as soon as I go to tablet mode, its smooth.

Sharper Screen On Later Model

Hi Guys, got a G Flex when they first came out and have been really happy with it so when I needed a new work phone i bought another one.
The new one has REV 1 in the model number and is obviously a later serial number.
Side by side next to each other both set to normal and full brightness the new one is much sharper, everything the screen displays is sharper for some reason, the resolution is exactly the same though obviously so how is this possible?
The original unit is running Jelly Bean based OS and the new one updated to Kit Kat which is also strange as they are both D955 and the old unit always says its OS is up to date when I check?
Has the change in OS sharpened the screen or have they change the screen or processing on later models?
Though someone on here might have some answers.
Cheers

It's on the bar code in the bottom left hand corner of the box, mine is MEZ65407931(1.1)BL The (1.1) was a (1.0) on my original unit so I'm assuming the (1.1) indicates a hardware revision.
Either way I'm pleased as the screen is so much nicer and also has less to no image retention.
it might be placebo effect, but since the kitkat update, I dont have any where near as much of the screen retention problem that was so horrible on 4.2..Maybe there is a new graphics driver in 4.4..

ok thanks for the awnser.
I noticed the same thing when I got my replacement earlier this week. On the new one the screen looks better and has no image ghosting.
I'm on the latest update 6/18. When I'm on tapatalk the black background looks black now as before it was like a light black. Lol. It looks a tad sharper.

Mine seems sharper as well, but to this day I never once noticed the ghosting issue everyone talks about. Weird.... Thankfully!

I bought my first Flex online but in order to get a deal on my 2nd Flex I had to return my 1st one. I didn't notice any ghosting on the first one but did on my 2nd one. After the 6-18 update I don't notice it but didn't really notice all that much. I'm very happy with the Flex especially the battery life and my Vest case/skin combo but I'm already wanting a new toy/phone.
To shoe her off... I got the Vest case for $20 instead of $60 on Ebay from Korea. The skin was free since I did a review on it.

Flex on a boat..Yikes! hehe Yea it's showing a little wear on the sides. Maybe I could clean it. Took me a day to finally decide to get a white skin. lol I was going to get red being a Ohio State fan but doesn't look like a true red. Also thought about getting brown. Skin is on sale and only $5.99.

I believe its the only way until coc manage its resolution scaling differently. And even then...on android 5.0 to 5.1 they display differently. Looks better standard dpi on 5.1 than it did before
Damn my s2 is late version and I was reading they don't have root for it yet
Sent from my SM-T817T using Tapatalk
Yeah, resolution is a little messed up. But my main thing is the screen is way too sensitive.... when farming, trying to drop multiple troops at a time just makes the whole thing zoom in... it's not even playable because the screen touch is way too sensitive... it's obviously more than capable of running Clash.. I just don't know how to reduce the sensitivity... maybe get a plastic screen cover or something....
Ive heard people say that aswell i dont seem to have that problem as much my thing is it looks soooo bad now im leasing a tablet that i dont even use basically cuz of how horrible it looks i usually just play on the phone and until they come ojt with lte version root i dont really have any options

Ive had the same problem. Hoping for a solution soon but there is a work around. If you reboot your tablet and start COC it will properly scale in full resolution and it looks insane on this tablet (i have the 9.7). Sometimes you have to reboot more than once but usually once will do it. As long as you don't kill the app the proper resolution will stick. If you kill it in task manager or hit the back button until you get the 'Exit Clash' prompt it will revert to low rez the next time you launch it. Every now and then (seems like once a week or so for me) it will randomly revert back anyway. So weird. Then you reboot and you're good again. FYI switching users on the tablet (multi profile) will break this which really sucks for me cause i have multiple clash accounts. Anyway this solution has kept me at bay. Hope it helps others.

Hey good call on that this thing looks amazing now that's so weird though I don't understand why it would do that it obviously has the ability to look good so what's causing it to go low Def makes me wonder.

Hi. Do you have touch screen sensitivity issue where you think you have selected a troop but the touch does not get registered on tab s2 8.0? Tried hard reset, still no luck.

App crashes and reboots

Anyone had apps crash / close not responding or phone reboots ?
Installed stability patch that was released but still getting reboots of os and app crashes.

I'm pretty gutted about it not being 100% from the get go.

I've had the odd app crash and reboot, I've got one more week to decide if I'm keeping it. Only thing is, I'm not sure there's anything else around that's going to be pure android with these specs for the same price. Pixel 2 is interesting, but likely to be £700+...

You sound like your exactly where I'm at smudger40. My phone arrived last wed so under DSR I've got a fortnight. After a fortnight I'm stuck with it for the next 2 years.
I'm after a near stock / totally stock android phone which leaves the pixel.
But like you I'm watching what price it is released at and with the fruity firm releasing a £1150 handset, what's not to say the pixel 2 hasn't suddenly gone up even more.
Like yourself I suspect it's going to be around £750 ish.
Which makes the Nokia a real bargain. My Nokia is going back so I'm covered under DSR and im just going to sit on the fence and see what pixel 2 looks like come oct.
And at that point i maybe re-order the nokia and hope I get a better one than the one I'm returning.
As for the X phone... I think this will open the flood gates to 3 year phone contracts to make the phone contract affordable or people are going to have to put 300-400 towards the handset cost.

I've had random reboots. Also issues with phone app and alarm. Phone app is being silent and unresponsive, alarm is just silent.
No issues here at all. Maybe try a factory reset and run with bare minimum a day or 2.
If it still happens it could very well be issues specific to your phone and you should be able to return it and get it either replaced or repaired.
My phone version is... Read below ?

Running a flagship phone with bare minimum? That makes no sense.
I have random reboots, phone app crashes on incoming calls, apps lag heavily, phone gets stuck in landscape mode.
Even the original ZTE Blade had better software than this. This is my first Nokia phone in 17 years and I will probably never get another one.

The very least you can do is to factory reset and some basic trial and error... If the service workshop factory reset it and can't find issues they basically end up claiming you caused the problems. Gathering some proof makes them look like the idiot instead.
It could very well be hardware related since mine works perfectly. **** happens. No brand has 100% flawless phones.
Avoid Nokia if you must... But then avoid Samsung due to Note 7 aka Firestarter, Sony due to random reboots on my Z5 premium (that they fixed later), Apple due to critically flawed updates... The list can go rather large if you really put some time on finding reasons to avoid something.

Already am avoiding all brands you mentioned.
I really like the Nokia 8. Just what I really wanted but, mines not been right from the first day. However, having seen pics that were leaked last night of the pixel 2, I think that looks a proper minger. Then there's leaks of the Nokia 9 appearing every where.
Sitting this one out till Nov when either I go Nokia 8/9 or minger phone (pixel 2 XL) depending on how stupidly it is priced
