Hi,
Bought a new Samsung Galaxy Note a few days ago.
Turn out it has a big problem with its camera - a big pink or red spot appears on all pictures I take.
I'm attaching an example image.
Is there a solution for this issue? Setting? Firmware update?
Or am I stuck with this?

Sorry to hear that. If only you knew and checked b4 buying... Galaxxy S2 or Galaxy Note. Because it is considered as characteristic of the SS product, not consider as errors. SO, you CAN'T fix it completely.
To my knowleage, there are some shipments of Galaxy Note have this "Pink spot", other shipments may not. Also some heavy "Pink spot", some lighter.
Usually, it appears in some fixed conditions, as: low (not enough) light... So many posts out there on interrnet talking about this matter.
You should reset all your settings in camera/video recorder to default options to limit it:
- Exposure value: 0
- Screen Mode: None
- Effects: None
- White balance: Auto
- Outdoor vissibility: off
- ISO: Auto
- Auto contrast: Off
- Blink detection: Off
Thanks, this seems to reduce the spot to the mininum. But it's still there. Is it a problem with the matrix?
I knew they had this problem on SGS2 but I thought they have fixed it since. It's amazing that they didn't fix it on a high end device like the note..

i had this pink spot on all my devices more or less. i agree that it can be reduced to minimum and wont appear on all pictures (depending on light and/or white balance), but it is definitely there.
if i remember right this is due to optics quality, some sort of chromatic aberration perhaps? also on the SGS2 there were at least 3 different cam module manufacturers: one was sony, one samsung and the 3rd i do not remember. sony's modules were the best ones! you could see which module you have by analyzing the cam-fw names!
if the note also has different cam manufacturers i do not know, but this would perhaps also explain why such things are different...
There is still a chance I can have the phone replaced in the shop I have bought it from.
Is there a way to know what camera versions there are on the note? Which one is better?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA App
Cant blame him for not knowing, its not even on the box that says this 'feature' and also big review sites dont really cover this as they might not receive sample units for making 'unfavorable' reviews.

Like how some of us have bonky auto-focus problems. Updating firmware doesn't seem to do the trick.

This has been going on since the Galaxy S2 days and Im not really surprised if this continues upto the Galaxy S3, a lot of people are spreading the B.S. that this is 'normal' just like the screen issues.
So anyway reference thread from the Galaxy S2:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1443658
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1098834
I never really checked the camera firmware on my friend's note but his does not have any pink spot at all after taking a similar picture on a white piece of paper with limited lighting.
Consider this as a hardware limitation or a pure defect, I dont really care this is just a minor issue for me but I understand this is a major concern for others.
Wow. The issues described in the GSII forum linked below are exactly the troubles I am having with the Note's camera.
It's minor in the broad scheme of things but major considering a premium device such as this should not have such a glaring weakness.

^^^ The S2 and Note use the SAME CAMERA, that explains why the pink-spot returned on a newer model.
If this issue is known since sgs2 and wasn't fixed in sgn samsung just don't give a damn about their clients.

Im just finding out about this problem - didnt know it had been an issue on the S2 until now. My Note has the pink tint, Im not happy about it. It should not be still happening on a £500 device!
No longer a problem?
As there have been no further responses since Feb....does this mean...
- the problem is not widespread
- the problem has been resolved with later firmware
- current devices don't have this problem
Anyone know what the likely scenario is?
As far as I know there was no fix for the problem.
I'm not sure how widespread this is but its really annoying me. I have no Idea what I can do about it.
Ir really does feel like Samsung just don't give a damn about their customers.
Hi! I just bought a note and it has Even in not too dark rooms.. I think samsung will change the cam in warranty.. https://docs.google.com/folder/d/0B4HRrrESrIu1ejFHbHg0a1Y3eWc/edit# - photos
Me too
i read in S2 forum that if you put the phone on "Movie" mode it will decrease the pink spot and it does but stills there and its very very annoying
I hope we all send to Samsung about the problem and they may solve it, Nokia did solve it with firmware. Source #
Same problem on my white i717.
Going to contact Samsung for a warranty claim.

IMHO, the problem is in every gnote unit, and it's not firmware problem, but hardware, current devices do have this problem, until now, i've checked every units my friends own, and the demo unit in the store, but still, i can't help but to notice the pink spot, i think, maybe it will be fixed in note 2.
IMHO, to samsung, this isn't really a problem, because it's not really that visible, and who will take a picture in a plain white object anyway?but we do right, lol, if you take picture on low light room, you'll see the spot, and i've tried to take my gf picture, on the face, and it has that blushing effect on her, the only solution is taking pictures not in a low light area, and white object,

Hi,
My screen died and have had to get a new one installed. The thing is, the new screen is fine, but the colours are really bright, even on the lowest brightness setting. I bought it to the attention of the guy in the shop, he took it off auto which was better but now I'm using it, it's actually not right at all.
The brown and greys of the UI should be dark, everything is too bright. The OS is still at the latest version from Samsung, GINGERBREAK.XWJVH which is what I had before.
I've looked all over and cannot find anyone with the same problem. Does anyone know if this is the software problem that I have seen in other threads or a hardware one? It just seems strange that my old screen was darker than this.
Thanks,
Luke.
new screen a genuine samsung product? I think its with the hardware...
It could be that an LCD screen has been put in. We are meant to have an AMOLED screen. Samsung did start shipping SGS with LCD screens when there was a shortage but im not sure how to tell for sure. Remember AMOLED is meant to have near enough pure black. Does your screen have this? If not its very likely LCD.
Also you can try using a colour tuning app. I know there is voodoo colour or voodoo screen. (Not sure if its on the market)

Have you tried a factory reset?
If you are in the UK or within warranty try take it to Carphone Warehouse, one that has a repair centre. Don't tell them you changed the screen (it may void warranty, unless you took it to a Samsung authorised repair shop) and ask to update to the latest firmware. They usually have it back to you within the day unless they are busy in which case you can collect it the next day. If this doesn't work then its most likely the screen.
Also look for ways to find out what type of screen is installed. Im sure others have faced this issue before. Good luck

Nope, not tried a factory reset, would have to back everything up somehow. Took it to a techcentre.co.uk in wakefield. I did email Samsung and asked about whether a screen was covered by warranty (it's not) a while back tho.

TBH they look kinda similar, but i guess we'll have to put it down to camera. Are you sure it looks washed out?? I thought so before but next to yours...it doesn't really look bad, yours looks better in areas.
Yup, see how dark yours is on the greys.
Luke.
Ok, was sitting with the galaxy in my hand, a few times with light pressure in the top left corner of the screen caused the colours to darken to normal.
Then the following day after charging, turned it on, the colours were dark. It has been right for the last 2 days...it has just reverted to uberbright again.
Faulty screen?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA
Yh could be... but because you said you press on a corner I suggest you look up the videos that show the opening up and see where the screen connector is. Its possible they didn't install it properly. Also I think the screen has to be glued to the digitizer. (Not sure). What happen when you contacted them, did they offer to check it? Its worth giving it back to them, you've had problems since day one and it hasn't been 30 days so should still be under the return/faulty product policy
They sent it back to head office where they apparently took it off and reconnected it. I basicaly said to the guy i wsn't happy. He said nothing. I just walked out wss so pissed off.

Also, this flip is not constant, so is annoying i cannot get it to change on cue.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA
Hmm im sure they have a complaints department... When you go to them tell them your not happy and that you want it fixed or your money back. You want a new screen put in.
Try get some evidence like the picture your put up. Have the same picture when its washed out and then when you can get it working properly bring that same picture up and take a photo of your phone again.
Also threaten them not physically but with reviews. Say that you are going to go onto every review site and tell them of their crap service. That you are actively part of forum sites like xda etc and will preach their awful service. Which you have already started here.. You can do it on google maps as well. You can remind them that having one bad review usually counts for more in both ratings and perspective then a few good reviews.
Btw i unfortunately broke both the screen and digitizer the other day and by your experience I wont be using them (If insurance pays out, so glad i didn't cancel it, otherwise i think it will have to go to ebay )
Finally you can tell them and take them to trading standards. They have sold you a faulty part and are refusing to solve the problem.
Here is what it looks like:
and the UI
Thanks,
Luke.
That is perfect! In the first video between 37-41 seconds its super clear there is a difference. Im sure that is not mean to happen that would be a proper fault in the phone and would have been corrected by Samsung and there would have been a recall and everything.
Do that in-front of them if you haven't already. Before you do though call and/or email the complaints dept. with a link to that video. And specifically tell them to look at 37-41 seconds on the first video. If they then don't agree to take another look at it or fix it then trading standards! It may be worth saying that in the email.
"I have been to .... and showed them my problem, told them about it multiple times. I am now showing you proof that this is a legitimate problem and am not happy with the service i am receiving. quote some crap from the website where they say they give great service and after sales support." Explain it has been less than 30 days and that you have been seeking support for this issue from the beginning. If you do not receive the support as stated by the website and as required by law you will be contacting trading standards for false advertising and poor service blah blah.... Just make sure you write it clear and to the point. Describe how you fix the problem in bullet points, and obviously say this is usually a temporary fix that lasts approx mins.
Hope that helps.. If you write that letter or contact them over the phone with most of the above and the evidence then they should fix it. Look through their website for what they say if they dont fix it and the guarantees they have for the service they provide. So you can quote them. BTW look through the trading standards website as well, because everything i have said is based on what I have heard and read from forums/articles/conversations. You need facts and evidence. I find shouting and anger doesn't usually work for me personally as i have a calm nature so its hard for me to portray anger lol If you can project your anger well then it does usually work quicker
Well, some success. I wrote them an email on the 4th, no reply, sent them another email demanding a response otherwise I would contact TS and give a bad review on Google Maps, was contacted the next day (I sent the email quite late in the day) by the MD, who basically agreed to give me a refund. I went today and got said refund. He saw the screen and I pointed out the banding. He was quite ok about it all really.
Don't get me wrong, their service is good, just bad that they don't know a good from a bad screen.

Reading through forum I realised that a lot of people won't notice light bleed of they put their phone down when booting as background on KK is grayish. I've seen a few people ask how they check for light bleed. I'm also curious how bad it gets.
Now, before you do it, please keep in mind once it's seen, it can't be unseen, don't blame me for that, I gave you a fair warning and if you didn't read it or ignored it, you suck

Ignore everything but top left corner (2 points) on this pic as this is simply due to the angle. It appears like light bleed, but it's so minor, it's barely visible in reality. Top left corner though is very prominent.
Have fun.

I can "live" with things.. Heck, I did with ipad and a few other things.
However display on this device is supposed to be sealed AFAIK. Light bleed like that shows its not, which is an inherited hardware fault. Another reason for this thread is to see if majority of devices is like that and looking for a perfect one is like looking for a needle in a hay stack. Which is obviously not worth the hassle.

Do you think this problem will be solved when they will release the next batch?
Look, @undercover , nothing against you personally, I actually enjoy most of your posts, but if you put any device under a microscope, you'll find issues. If slight light bleed visible only during the boot process while in a pitch-black room is the only issue with my phone, I'd consider myself lucky and move on.
I guess what I'm saying is, every device deserves a little margin of error. Every single unit off of the assembly line can't be perfect, and a unit with only the aforementioned light bleed should probably be considered slightly-less-than-perfect-but-acceptable, in my humble opinion.
No bleed here. Goooood!
I guess I'm lucky. I only have light bleed on lower bottom corner and its not even bad. Just BARELY.

With all due respect this thread is not to discuss what is acceptable error margin to a person.
To simplify, here's the bleed, how much worse/better/same it gets and on how many devices. Everything is relative so I'm trying to work out just HOW relative it is. That's all. I'm not slagging LG, Google, users, nor am I saying every user should return his unit because of certain amount of light bleed. Most of the threads I started are either help threads (passed on to other people now) or analysis of this or the other.
Tis all

Hi guys of xda!! I am jumping off from Symbian OS to Android! Bought myself a second-hand One for 300$ and I love the build quality, Boom Sound and all that!
However, it appears that I have been somewhat cheated by the previous owner, he's told me that it has a remainder of 3 month warranty left with HTC, but it expires next month. :X So I kinda have to look around my phone to see if there are any issues that I can highlight on when I send it (please do tell me if the problems I am about to mention are worth sending to HTC and leave me without a working phone for weeks)
Current issues I am encountering are:
1) It LAGS when playing games, watching Youtube and using the Facebook app, I am unsure if this is normal, but from what I see on the reviews, it should be close to buttery smooth, right? Come on, I didn't think the frame rate would drop to (roughly 20 fps?) on Jetpack Joyride! It just keeps stuttering! D:
2) I have triple checked with the previous owner on the rear camera issue on whether it'd have the tint problems, he had informed me that he had already gotten it fixed, which I believe it is. HOWEVER it did not occur to me to check the front-facing camera.. here's how the front-facing camera looks like (please forgive me if I am violating any image size limit on this forums. :\).

It is WAY worse in lower-light, really, really RED. Tried Googling about, not much complaints on the red tint on the FRONT camera, should I get it fixed with HTC? Tried fiddling with the settings, doesn't change much, red tints are still present, is that normal?
3) Err, don't think there's any more other than the issues highlighted above, could you please suggest me to check on any common issues that I might have left out? So that I may request for a warranty-covered repair.
P/S: The lags and red tints are present no matter the phone's temperature, I've tried it in both coldness and warmth.
I have not attempted on rooting the phone or anything at all, here are the versions:

Also to note: When I booted this phone for the first time, there was a welcome page to set up and things, and the camera image count was from 0001, but it came with an extra app called Wechat (it's a popular Whatsapp alternative here in Malaysia) I am unsure if the phone has been factory reset before it was handed to me, because if it was, I don't think resetting it again would help much, right?
Thank you so much for your time! Would really appreciate any help I could get!
You can try to factory reset the phone and see if the lag is still there. Both my htc ones have red front camera in low light. You can't tell if your phone is rooted that way. My phone is also not rooted and shows [email protected] Check if there is supersu app installed, if there is that means its rooted

hello snoopy! May I ask if there is a way for me to backup my apps and settings into my laptop before I attempt a factory reset? Would HTC Sync be enough? I do not see any supersu app installed. Thank you!
About the red tint issue, I have actually compared this with my friend's HTC One as well, real time, his did not have any form of red tint whatsoever.. kinda worries me.

Use HTC Backup. Just do a backup before you factory reset, then when you're setting up the phone again, just choose the "restore from a backup" instead of starting fresh.
The red tint issue is just really random and you either have it or not. There really is nothing you can do about it other than talk with HTC and get a replacement.

I'm back, done the factory reset and attempted to play a game of Jetpack Joyride (no idea of other game I could test on) before restoring, still the same performance issues, stutters every five seconds or so, hard to not notice, is this normal?

hmm.. is there even a chance for this to be a manufacturer's defect on the hardware that is causing the inconsistent frame rates, in your opinion?

Pi in 140, 141 average. Now downloading AnTuTu, is there a benchmark app that you'd like me to test out on?
EDIT: AnTuTu score: 28403

It's not common, but it can happen. This is what I got and my phone doesn't lag at all. 20291 in antutu. Benchmarks are totally useless.

Try a different ROM maybe? All HTC ones should perform almost exactly the same.

sorry, i think this is a stupid question, but wouldn't changing ROM be considered as rooting? or requiring a root? That would ultimately void the warranty right?

urgh.. don't even know if it's actually just my eyes playing tricks on me or what.. the lag issues are only when playing games, ALL games. Home screens and stuff are just too smooth.

That's a tricky question. If your phone has a hardware defect, I don't think HTC can legally get out of honoring the warranty (but I'm not sure). The problem is, if you've rooted, it will be much harder for you to argue that it definitely is a hardware defect. I would have it serviced if you can get warranty service. And BTW, on my phone (rooted, custom ROM), Jetpack Joyride has occasional frames of lag (mostly in the beginning of the level), but gameplay seems smooth after that.

You can always relock the bootloader and remove all traces of you rooting it. (S off).
As the other guy said, if there really is a problem, I would get it replaced now.

The resolution of my display is set to FHD+ which is 1080p and I watch 360p and 480p videos on my N950N. I don't see any black crushing on those videos. It could be the quality of the encodes of your videos.
Hi... I am experiencing this issue after August update. All blacks are displayed as kind of brownish red. Tried settings reset and factory reset. Nothing helps. Please help!

Hope it's your only solution so, because i bet you 99% chance it's realy a hardware problem, i tried everthing too, hard reset the phone twice... use other apps... my last resort was take the phone before warranty over, thats like in 2 weeks now for me, and saved a lot of money. They also replaced my screen because had some pixel burn and also replace the battery. In fact i can say after almost 2 years i got a new Note 8 Hope it's last another 2 ou 3 years without problems because i love my Note 8!

You have no idea how mad i am since 4 months. I sometime switch my sim to old broken Moto g5 plus! I tried to post on Samsung community but no one from Samsung seems to care to answer or confirm or provide a fix. I am posting and making a thread on XDA(here is link click here) please join on Samsung community if we want fix for this.

The whole experience is ruined. I hate myself for updating my perfect Note 8 to this March 2019 update. I feel you.
Black crush
I have noticed that the Dark service (see screenshot) at my phone which has this issue is not running. At the phone of my friend which has not the issue this service is running all the time. Is it possible to force this service to run ?

No there is no solution yet. Please tell me if the downgrade fix the issue.
Have seen many posts saying the problem is fixes after the new update.
If you try samsung diagnostic menu, you will see the problem again.

I don't notice the problem in real use, but many people do, samsung should recall all unites and fix this.
I remember this diagnostic tool is not appropriate for some reason. Download Touch Screen Test from Play Store and do the test again. Also, the latest firmware update BUA5 has been reported to fix the issue completely, which my phone hasn't received yet (unlocked on Verizon).

You can use a drawing app if you want, and same problem.
The touch screen test app does not show any problems, only if you swipe fast, but anyway, looks like a shady fix

? it is valid, it recognizes the ghost touching tf
I think you're suppose to follow the rectangles and make an "X"; if those register after being touched it's working correctly.
If you have an after market screen protector this may screw it up.
If you're inadvertently touching the screen that can screw it up.
Try increasing or decreasing touch sensitivity.
Try enabling accidental touch protection if that's an option.
Clear the system cache on the boot menu.
Try a hard reboot (not reset!!!).

the thing is it's probably happening to more people because they ****ed the phone with cheap components
the fix they promise just hides the problem away in the touch screen test app
that's why im angry
I'm on the latest BUA5 and for me it didn't fix the issue. Maybe it did make it a little bit better, but it is not completely gone. For me the touch issue is so small, I don't mind. I can only encounter the problem in the test app.
My guess is that many who think it is fixed, didn't swipe fingers fast, close or long enough. The problem won't occur if you swipe on the edges of the screen and it won't occur immediately, only after some time.
OR then it is really fixed for some, but then I guess I'm not the lucky one

Samsung will substitute components and smaller chipsets as needed during a production run.
Result unpredictable behavior after firmware updates because the firmware wasn't configured for the substitute chipset.
It's so bad Sammy doesn't know what chipsets were used without physically examining the unit.
After which they can correct the firmware... presumably or replace said component.
Send it in or get a replacement if you believe you have a major issue.
Welcome to Sammy's beta hardware test program

You are right. Swiping up and down alternately with two fingers close enough still creates ghost touches, far apart no issue. Although the fix may not be perfect, in day to day use I'd say the fix is good enough, because we hold a phone in a landscape mode when playing games, and two thumbs are far apart from each other.

If I send it in, and they open and change something, water resistant is gone, and I lose ip certification.
I probably can't get it replaced because of laws.
Do you also have this phone?
I don't know about that hardware beta tester, because even people that bought the phone days ago, have this issue.

I have the 10+. If Samsung repairs it they will send it back with the original seals. It's not rocket science.
In time after enough have been seen Samsung may well include a firmware patch for the effected units. Lol, after over a year and a half Samsung finally has the Buds+ firmware dialed in... they sound great, now.
You could also demand a full refund.
If I could get one out of Sony... anything is possible
Rule #1 no free rides.

They will probably in some months completely fix it. It doesn't affect normal use anyway so, i will just let it go
Imagine paying so much for the buds + and only after a year the firmware is right
They have been putting out firmware updates, and the problem has been getting fixed, but not 100%
Maybe one UI 3.1 does the trick
