I'm downloading apps and they are filling the entire screen, but the text is very small. Obviously phone apps.
Are there any specifically made for bigger tablet screens?
Try checking the Apps section of the nexus 7 XDA forum and you will find a thread about tablet optimised apps. There is also a section in the play store, under apps, for "staff picks for tablets".

Thanks. Why isn't call of duty elite compatible with the nexus?
What I dislike is that some app manufacturers are selling "Tablet Optimized" versions of apps for more money.
While it MIGHT be one thing if it had special (new) features or something that made it worth more money, but I dislike having to buy the same app over again, sometimes for a hefty premium, just so the resolution is good.
Check out this: Must Have Android Apps for Google Nexus 7 to find some good apps tailored for Nexus 7
I'd recommend not wasting your time clicking that link. Lists Facebook & instagram (not tablet optimized) and Netflix (not exactly a secret) along other common and or not so useful apps.

Did you try going to Settings > System > Font Size and change it to your preference?
Generally apps that have HD in the title/description are optimized for tablets. I find that a lot of apps don't scale the splash screen very well but the app itself works well. A good example of this NBC News. The main menu doesn't scale up but the articles display fine.

I don't understand how the company that revolutionized the internet by creating the worlds best online search engine, can not properly run and organize the search functions of an app store.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.trendstertab&feature=search_result
Trendster HD for instance which is a honeycomb specific app is not showing in the tablet section and how is there not a damn filter for results! Sometimes I feel like Google doesn't really care that much about android.
Wow here is another one

You'll notice that its called Featured Apps for Tablets. Not tablet apps. Those apps you mentioned aren't featured apps for tablets.

My point is that I think google is cherry picking the apps that show up in that section. It's not the tablet app section its the featured tablet app section so the apps must merit being featured. I do however think there should be away to search for honeycomb optimized applications in addition to this featured tablet app section.
People pay to be on the fetured app section because its more marketing for there app witch I think is stupid

Give it time... good lord. Apple had a slow start to the tablet sections too. Everyone is so damn sensitive nowadays. Give it time and the formatted apps will appear. Hell google just released that special file or whatnot that allows designers to design for all screen size/format in one apk. Dont tell me google doesnt care, its just a slow start not to mention i personally believe that motorola pushed google to release a not fully finished os to beat out the iPad2 announcement.

the op's point makes sense, he isn't complaining about the number of apps. when i hit that tablet featured tab i expect to see apps that are table optimized. there are many tablet and honeycomb optimized apps that are hard to find. if they are charging the people who pay money should just have theirs on top. Right now when you hit that button they make it seem like there are only 20 or so honeycomb apps period.
I live in Canada so can't download Currents from the Market, but you can easily find an .apk with a quick Google search.
Currents is exactly the killer app I was looking for to read my Reader streams. I love Flipboard on the iPad and this is its equivalent for Android tablets. It's extremely smooth and looks awesome on the GT 7.7.
This makes all the difference!!!
I agree currents is a pretty great app. It seems a little aggressive on the data and battery use but that can be manually stopped. It can make almost any article based site look good and the sites that have custom made currents look great.

I have it set-up for 6-hour intervals. My GT is WiFi only but I left it on all day (sporadic use to be honest) with syncing Email/Calendar, Twitter, FB in background (as well as Currents...) and it only consumed 25% in over 10 hours.
i couldn't agree more. one of the few apps on my homescreen!
Now we're talking!
Superb app! Marvellous to encounter a slick purpose built tablet app, and looks phenomenal on the 7.7.
Guaranteed recipe to wow your mates - 7.7 + Currents + 500px. Job done.
My only issue with google currents is the "500px magazine" (photos). When you click on one of the photos, then swiping to next/previous photo is not responsive at all most probably is because it waits for the next/previous photo to be loaded
Hey, do you get the pictures of + 500px in G. Currents in full screen? I can only see them in the upper left corner, about 50% size of the screen ...
Google Currents Bug
I seem to have an issue, which no one else mentioned here (or anywhere else on the web yet). I used Google Currents on Asus Transformer with no problems, but same app on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 does not display the articles properly, there is a overlapping column on the right side (as seen on the picture). I have tried all the possible settings, small/medium/large font...the problem remains. Does anyone have any idea what could be the cause and solution??? Thanks in advance!!!
I find Feedly better to be honest.

did you change your lcd density?
I have the same issue with columns all messed up. I'm running rooted stock without density change.
Then again ; I live in Switzerland where Currents is not available so I got it through Market Enabler. Don't know if that could create the issue.

Instead of sarcasm you might try starting a thread about your issue.
Sent from my GT-P6810 using XDA Premium App
Ok, resolved. The density needed to be changed. You can achieved that with a free app from android market. Btw, no sarcasm in my previous post whatsoever. I guess computercommunication makes people a tad paranoid.
Uh... changing density is hardly a solution. I mean sure one can do that, but the app itself should support different resolution/size/density to be considered a "killer app" !
What I really don't get is how people have it working without changing density as I haven't.

Ever since I got my 8.9 Galaxy tab I've noticed issues with the Google Play store. Things like the HBO Go app not being available for it, but if you were to go behind the Google Play and manual install the Kindle fire's version it would work beautifully. I've ran into other apps that are not available for me, but are for similar devices. Now I'm noticing google is offering magazines, but they are only for 7 & 10 inch devices. Which makes no sense to me since you can buy a whole range of monitors for your computer and that doesn't seem to affect what your doing on it.
I guess I'm used to a world where to run an app you only need to have the correct OS and hardware to run it.
Why does android applications seem more concerned with brand name of your device and the screen size?
magazines
Looks like just after my post they updated my Google Play to allow for the purchases of magazines. It still seems that there are issues with the Android Market when it comes to compatibility that don't truly reflect if your device is compatible or not.

Google Play has been like this for a long time. Developers may wish on allow their app on confirmed working devices and will place restrictions on who can download it. While this helps keep their ratings higher from incompatible users hating their app. It leaves less popular devices out in the cold regardless of compatibility issues. But its why we have apk files and friendly xda members to get them for us
Hbo go updated their app it works now

AOKP got this request recently.
Seems a Cornerstone build would be the only way out...which is unlikely.
I'm fully aware this would probably be quite difficult to port, and likely quite time consuming.
Having said that, I also want this. It makes so much more sense on a 7 inch tablet then a 5 inch whatever.
This works with a handful of Google Apps, no other apps. I don't see the point.

Running 2 apps at the same time. Seems like a great idea to me. It supports a limited amount of apps, but unlike Galaxy Note 10.1, you could probably hack in other apps to work.

Yes, but the Galaxy Note 2 supports all apps in multi-window mode...
This would be *nice* to have but I don't know how much easier it would be then to just multitasking between 2 apps now and having the apps full screen. I can see some of the benefits like watching a youtube video while chatting on Google Talk. There are some good alternatives such as popup video players and notepads that overlay on top of current app and typically are resizable and movable.
While it makes sense this would be better on a 7" then a 5"... it really would be best on a 10". 7" barely gives me enough breathing room for 1 app. Plus most of the "compatible apps" are simple things like a calculator and notes
Well it seems VERY useful to me.
It's better than popup apps in my opinion - more app options.
Overscreen browser is a great alternative for now
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
No, it's not.
This allows multiple apps to run side by side, Overskreen is just the browser. Also, it's not even compatible with Jelly Bean, so no one who owns a Nexus 7 can use it.

No, as I said, handful of specific Google apps. Read up on it. Will the list grow? Maybe? I'd have to guess it is a sdk used to support the function, is it worth app dev time to do it and possibly maintain multiple versions of their app?
more then google apps
Not just google apps can do this on the samsung note 10.1 .
samsng snote and lecture app
browser
vidoe player
picture gallery
polaris office
Photo shop (special note version)
I think there a few others that are on the samsung web app store. Samsung sbe adding apps to this.
Now for the bubble burst. The reason they work on the galaxy note is the new QUAD Core cpu and 2 GB Very fast ram .. samsung tried to release a less ram/power version of the 10.1 note with a higer res display. they backed the display down and increased the cpu//ram. this is also to support the WACOM S PEN..
I have been reading alot about the device because mine will be here Monday. So the above if from my reading and research. I can update you more mid next week.. I do not see a need for split windows on a 7 inch screen .. get the overscreen browser and try it.. JUST Does not work for productive work...
Hope this help make it more understandable... too bad samsung did not make the n7 . i give up because of the screen issues sent two of them back and will NOT order a 3rd...
Dude. Overskreen DOES NOT work on Jelly Bean. And it is just one app, vs an entire suite of Google Apps.
Also there's no need for window management.
Nexus 7 has a quad-core processor too, just less RAM - which isn't even a problem, it still can handle side by side apps.
And you're telling some weird stuff here. We are talking about Galaxy Note 2, which allows more apps, and works better. AND it works on a 5 inch screen, so it'll be awesome on a seven inch.
So yeah, please don't come back with your 'research' to tell us that you think that this feature is unnecessary.
i hope sincerely as a dev can make a mod for port this feature in future beacause it's very usefull even if work only with google apps it's better ,
anyone know if a moded youtube apps existing for play a video on background because i search since 3 month but not find ?
thx
I don't think there is one, sadly. Android doesn't support true multitasking
While i would love to have or port this it simply isnt possible, it requires a lot of changing to the frameworks and it would be hard to decompile all of samsungs sources and extract it.

Stock android not, but there are a few roms with cornerstone, i think mainly on 10 inch tablets.
Web os did this kinda on a dual core wish android would absorb that multitasking feature right now running multiple apps kinda is a hit and miss

Hi, Google playstore does not separate tablet apps from phone apps. How many tablet apps are there? I am afraid of buying android tablets for fear of apps that will just be scaled versions to fit on Android tablets.
Edit. Please delete thread. Transfered question in themes and apps section.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
I would just buy an iPad, as clearly you believe everything that Apple and their media partners tell you about Android. Their fantasy stories about fragmentation are just that - fantasy.
If you are interested in the REALITY, then let me explain. Yes it's true most Android apps have a single application that supports smartphones and tablets, but there is MUCH more to the story than that. Modern Android development is done using what is known as fragments, and it allows your application to have the same business logic, but different visual layouts depending on screen size and orientation.
The upside (the one that nobody mentions), is that you buy the application once, and it works on all your Android devices....
Yes there are some apps that are just big smartphone apps, and these are the ones that Apple always roll out, but it's a misleading picture, most of the big name apps have Android tablet layouts, or in some cases dedicated apps.
The only thing that matters is the few app you might want to use.
Out of the hundreds of apps on the store most of us only use a few.Having a 1000 silly kid game apps out there does not mean anything if you never use one.I would check to see if the apps you want work good on a tablet. If they do then to heck with the whole how many apple has verses android thing.
