I am new to this, with a B&N Nook HD+ tablet.
Let me just say, this is a terrific place with lots of knowledgeable people in Android and Nook.
I rooted my tablet, and love how it all works.
There is one nagging issue I have. It seems that B&N appeared to install 2 apps that I keep deleting, but they keep re-appearing.
Spotify and Crosswords.
I do not want these apps and wish they would stop installing themselves.
I used SQLite to set in the databases, install foreign apps, and also the other setting to not over the air, install Nook updates.
I tried to find a setting in the various databases to tell the Nook to stop installing these free apps, but cannot find it.
Does anyone know how to stop the Nook from installing these free apps?
I suspect at some point BN might install some free app automatically that might attempt to unroot this device.
Thanks,
Rob

Get the free Gemini Application Manager on Play Store and block the apps. It adds them to a database that says to ignore them. But that won't help with new apps.
Edit: Gemini gave the warning that ics might be able to override this setting. It did. The app came back. And I did what you did and could find no databases to stop it.

Been meaning to track this down for years and finally got around to doing it. The sneaky app that's doing the reinstalls is com.bn.bnappinstaller
Use your app of choice to freeze this (on the off chance you want to have this bloatware factory run again in the future)
That's it, you can uninstall with wild abandon and they will never come back

I was relieved to find this because my husband's HD is "running in the red" because of apps like Spotify, Hulu+, etc., which come unbidden "from the cloud". He'd like to have room for apps of his own choosing (not to mention space for the OS to do its thing...).
But....I tried this and it didn't work. They are back again

So I've been playing around with the Honeycomb previews, and was wondering if anyone's been able to get the stock nook reading/lending/etc.. apps working in Honeycomb.
I was able to transfer the games over via adb, although the layout is off on chess and the sensor at the edge doesn't pick up all presses on crossword.
Specifically, I really like the default reading app and side-loading epubs and would like to get that working.
Has anyone done this already or know which dependent apk's different components of the stock nook software use?
TIA
I also would like to get the B&N apps to run properly in Honeycomb. I am currently running rooted 1.1, because I want the B&N apps. My son use Nookbooks for kids and I prefer the default Nook app when I read. I don't purchase many books, but the ones I do buy are from B&N because I want to support them. If we don't support B&N they will stop making great devices like the original Nook and the Nook Color.
I do realize I can run the Android app and buy books via the web, but Nookbooks for kids is not available in the Android market.
Yeah, I'm playing around with it and seeing if I can get anything working with it.
I really like the stock Android apps, but like how much better honeycomb is designed for tablets (vs. froyo/eclair or the stock bn that can only have books in the home screen).
Will post back if I have any success... and I think it's a dumb rule that you need 10 posts to put anything in the dev forum. Supposedly this area is for noobs asking about how to install nookie etc.. and the other is for "dev" but half the posts over in dev are people talking about installation trouble and half the posts here are people posting things that would be better suited to the dev section. /rant
So I adb pushed everything bn over to honeycomb, but nothing shows up. Try to install Reader.apk and get error that it's missing required bncloudapi.
I have the jar file in frameworks, and the permissions files, but not sure if there's something else I should be looking for. TIA
Hi I'm new to this forum and new to the nook world. My parents recently bought my son a nook hd for Xmas and he really likes it but as I help him go thru it we see there isn't a whole lot you can do with it and there doesn't seem to be many apps that he can use. I've done some searching online and on you tube on how to root and have come across a lot of info to set the nook as an android but they were all for nook color. Some of the features these videos offered would certainly be things I know my son would enjoy. The other thing I came across was rooting the nook without voiding the warranty, is this something that can be done? Any help and direction will be much appreciated. My apologies if this is something that has already been posted I tried searching but wasn't lucky finding such a thread.
I personally own an ipad mini so no too familiar with the nook so this is certainly new territory for me. Thanks in advance for your help.
Rooting will void your warranty. However, you can install an Android ROM, called CM10, to a microsd card and run it off of the card, never touching the HD's internal storage. For more info see this thread :

You actually don't have to worry about warranty with rooting, there is a simple way to restore to complete stock. Just reboot 8 times, interupting the process before it completes. Go here if you want to root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2062613, CM10 is still a little buggy...
PS, rebooting means holding down the power button 10 sec to completely turn off.
This is true. I actually prefer rooted stock to CM10 as of now. For someone just starting out, my advice would still be to install CM10 to an SD card. They can play around with it and see what their HD or HD+ can do when it's unfettered. And they don't have to worry about messing up their Nook, ot about B&N updates taking root away. Then, when they feel more confident, they can root stock and really enjoy their Nook. But either approach will work fine in the end!

Thank you so much for this information. I do have some more questions to your post. How exactly would I reboot, do you mean reboot the nook 8 times how would I do this process. Also, we have purchased some apps so if we do the rooting, will my son lose those apps, will we need to back up the nook before rooting. Sorry for all the questions I just want to make sure I have the full understanding before I proceed. Thanks!
For what it is worth, the nook hd already has Android ice cream sandwich installed. It is the home screen launcher and omission of certain Google apps that make it appear limited. In fact, without rooting, you can follow instructions posted at B&N's website how to sideload an alternate launcher and many Android apps to unleash lots of features.
E.g., Chrome works perfectly when side loaded. In order to side load without root, install on a PC the nook hd drivers, the android SDK, the nook HD SDK, and then use the android debug bridge from a command prompt to install apps (*.apk format) to a connected nook. Also, epubs from the Google Play store should be accessible via the Sony Reader android app if side loaded. I installed launcher pro, drop box, amazon kindle, Sony Reader, amazon mp3, Facebook, yahoo mail, adobe acrobat Reader, and neutron player without a problem. You can still access all the standard B&N apps by toggling between launchers with the n button. I did all this yesterday on 2.0.5. B&N posted in their online developer Web pages incredibly specific directions on how to set up windows, Mac and Linux to side load.
set an afternoon aside as it is tedious, but follow the instructions at
https://nookdeveloper.zendesk.com/entries/21943338-nook-developer-start-up-guide#_Sideloading
Note that the instructions are directed to downloading your own written apps. However, you can download Android apk files all over the web and side load them to the nook using the described process.
Enjoy and good luck!

If you want to completely reset the device to the way it was when you first took it out of the box (unrooted, unregistered, and all your added stuff erased), then you interrupt the boot process 8 times in a row by holding the power button so it shuts off again before completing the start up.
Rooting gives you the ability to do more with your Nook, but all of the B&N interface is accessible too. As long as the Nook is registered to the B&N account with his apps, they'll still be available.
I don't know how old your son is but be aware that parental controls available with the B&N profiles only applies to the B&N interface.
It's a good idea to backup. The tool which allows you to root also has the option to back it up if you want.
Thanks to everyone that helped so I did the Root/Gapps from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2062613 and it all works my son is excited but now we just need to know how to install other apps on there. We have the google play which is nice, is there a way to install android market, and amazon kindle...all that good stuff. once I get the how to for dummies i think I should be all set lol. Thanks again for any and all help.

Android market is the same as Play Store. You can get Amazon kindle there. Just register with Google in the Play Store and all that stuff becomes available.

Hi there,
My son has been having a great time with the nook being rooted. He did run into a problem and I certainly don't know how to fix it. When he goes into setting and selects General he gets the following message "unfortunately, settings has stopped" and he only gets this when he selects General. He was trying to set the dim settings timer and screen shut off but can't do so. Any way to fix this? Thanks!

Hands down you can not go wrong rooting and running android on the Nook....let's face it, Nook apps suck..play store rocks..lots of free goodies
Hello all,
From the recent access to the google play store from the nook hd+ and the deep discounts, I decided to get the nook hd+.
Indeed, it is a great device, and the addition of google play makes it so much more powerful.
Thanks to leapinrar's rooting and extras file, I can also download all sorts of awesome apps for it. I went ahead and downloaded the universal root kit as well as the extras kit that allowed apps of unknown sources to be downloaded to it.
However, there are a couple issues happening:
1. This happens intermittenly- Every once in a while, the nook hd+ completely resets itself for no particular reason. Sometimes it happened every ten minutes, yet it didn't happen at all yesterday. I am not sure what is going on.
2. This happens all the time- Every time I open the library menu, it crashes, saying "unfortunately, library has stopped."
I didn't have neither of these problems before getting it rooted. Can anybody point me to the right direction in solving this problem?
BTW, I put the post in this section, because they didn't allow me to post at the nook hd+ specific forums. Please redirect post to appropriate place if necessary.
Thanks in advance for all of the help!
This is the right forum to post that question.
Try flashing the disable root zip so that just the extras is active. It is best not to root unless you really need it. If it still acts up, go to the stock CWM and wipe data/factory reset. That means you will have to log in again both with B&N and Google. But it may get rid of your issue. Then flash just the extras zip this time. Downloading all those awesome apps may have added one that is causing the problem. So be judicious about what you add back.

thanks leapinrar! I will try your solution and let you know with the results ASAP.
After reflashing back to CWM, these issues indeed disappeared. Adding extras and root functionality (I have a couple apps that require rooting) did not require in crashes, so just like you said, I think the issues stemmed from one of my apps. Thanks again for your help.
Also, I am in the hunt of a smooth good app that can take notes as well as annotate pdfs (there is an equivalent called "upad" in the iOS). I will be opening a new thread to ask about this, but I wanted to inquire you (or to anybody else that views this post).
Thanks again.
As much as I love Android 4.3, I still miss a couple of the stock Amazon OS apps on my Kindle. The Play Store version apps just aren't as nice in my opinion. I managed to rip the stock "Launcher.apk" and "KindleForOtter.apk" from a Kinology update.zip I had lying around on my hard drive. I moved them to "/system/app," gave them root permissions (rw-r--r--), and rebooted (knowing it probably wouldn't work). Sure enough, both apps force closed upon launch. So my question is, is there anyway to integrate these apps into JellyBean? If so, what are the files necessary, and how much work would it take?

This is a question that has been brought up and looked into since the first generation KFs. Many skilled developers have looked into the issue and the answer is always the same...
While it may not be impossible to port apps like the launcher, reader and Silk to non-Amazon ROMs, the work involved would be way more than what it's worth.
Does this apply to things like the Instant Video, which is not Kindle specific, as it also runs on my Sony internet streamer (and actually shows in the play store for that), but don't work on other devices, like my Nexus?
In other words, does whatever check it does to see if it's on a Kindle or other 'approved' device still work on , for example, CM?
I bought a 2015 Amazon Fire Kids' Edition and a 32GB SD card for my son for Christmas. I followed the directions here to upgrade to 5.1.1 and maintain root and the 5.0.1 bootloaders, set up Google, etc. We decided to use the one year of Free Time that came with the tablet to make things simpler to set up and maintain, at least initially. However, my son keeps having to download apps, even ones he frequently uses, all over again. There is plenty of space on the SD card, and there appears to be plenty of space on the internal memory too.
I haven't been able to find a lot of discussion of this issue online, and I'm not sure if that's because it is normal and everyone thinks it is ok, or if it is because (especially on XDA) everyone is using some other setup.
Are other folks having this issue? Is there any way to force it to store the apps on the SD card and not constantly download apps that were already installed?
Since this isn't my device I don't want to spend a lot of time messing with it. I just want it to work without complaints. Even my wife is ticked that Free Time works this way!
if you have FireOS, have you tried contacting Amazon? Just wondering... Otherwise mention which ROM you are running.
I have the exact same issue on both my kids tablets. Apps have to be downloaded again very often, they still show as installed in settings. It even does it on apps downloaded from the normal appstore when they are added to the kids area, but the same apps run with no issues when not on a kids profile so I know they don't need to download extra data or update to run. Have you come across anything that is causing this? I'm going to try speaking with Amazon tomorrow. Both mine are unrooted stock.
I have two tablets and having issues with one of them at the moment. Originally I left one stock (kids subscription) and set the other up with slim rom, but ordered a third (another with the kids sub) and gave away the one with slim rom. The one with fire OS has only the lock screen ad remover and OTA blocker mods. It has an 8GB SD card but constantly running out of space, I can't even uninstall apps to make space now, so frustrating.
I thought the 1yr subscription to all the kids content would be great but its no good if you cant actually play or use them. The best thing I done was change the one to slim rom, didn't have one issue, had access to everything on play store and you could still set up parental controls.
Sent from my InFocus M810t using Tapatalk
Do you still get access to the kids content that comes with the subscription?
I got a Fire tablet forma the kids thought the Free time thing was great, but every time an app is launched it seems to be downloaded again. This is frustrating. I also searched but didn't find much on the topic. Any news on what causes this? I have moved all apps to the SD, maybe that's part of the cause?

Possibly. If the migration method did not utilize symbolic links good chance relocation is the culprit. Move one or two back to internal storage and see what happens.
