Hi I'm new to this forum and new to the nook world. My parents recently bought my son a nook hd for Xmas and he really likes it but as I help him go thru it we see there isn't a whole lot you can do with it and there doesn't seem to be many apps that he can use. I've done some searching online and on you tube on how to root and have come across a lot of info to set the nook as an android but they were all for nook color. Some of the features these videos offered would certainly be things I know my son would enjoy. The other thing I came across was rooting the nook without voiding the warranty, is this something that can be done? Any help and direction will be much appreciated. My apologies if this is something that has already been posted I tried searching but wasn't lucky finding such a thread.
I personally own an ipad mini so no too familiar with the nook so this is certainly new territory for me. Thanks in advance for your help.
Rooting will void your warranty. However, you can install an Android ROM, called CM10, to a microsd card and run it off of the card, never touching the HD's internal storage. For more info see this thread :

You actually don't have to worry about warranty with rooting, there is a simple way to restore to complete stock. Just reboot 8 times, interupting the process before it completes. Go here if you want to root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2062613, CM10 is still a little buggy...

This is true. I actually prefer rooted stock to CM10 as of now. For someone just starting out, my advice would still be to install CM10 to an SD card. They can play around with it and see what their HD or HD+ can do when it's unfettered. And they don't have to worry about messing up their Nook, ot about B&N updates taking root away. Then, when they feel more confident, they can root stock and really enjoy their Nook. But either approach will work fine in the end!

Thank you so much for this information. I do have some more questions to your post. How exactly would I reboot, do you mean reboot the nook 8 times how would I do this process. Also, we have purchased some apps so if we do the rooting, will my son lose those apps, will we need to back up the nook before rooting. Sorry for all the questions I just want to make sure I have the full understanding before I proceed. Thanks!
For what it is worth, the nook hd already has Android ice cream sandwich installed. It is the home screen launcher and omission of certain Google apps that make it appear limited. In fact, without rooting, you can follow instructions posted at B&N's website how to sideload an alternate launcher and many Android apps to unleash lots of features.
E.g., Chrome works perfectly when side loaded. In order to side load without root, install on a PC the nook hd drivers, the android SDK, the nook HD SDK, and then use the android debug bridge from a command prompt to install apps (*.apk format) to a connected nook. Also, epubs from the Google Play store should be accessible via the Sony Reader android app if side loaded. I installed launcher pro, drop box, amazon kindle, Sony Reader, amazon mp3, Facebook, yahoo mail, adobe acrobat Reader, and neutron player without a problem. You can still access all the standard B&N apps by toggling between launchers with the n button. I did all this yesterday on 2.0.5. B&N posted in their online developer Web pages incredibly specific directions on how to set up windows, Mac and Linux to side load.

Note that the instructions are directed to downloading your own written apps. However, you can download Android apk files all over the web and side load them to the nook using the described process.

If you want to completely reset the device to the way it was when you first took it out of the box (unrooted, unregistered, and all your added stuff erased), then you interrupt the boot process 8 times in a row by holding the power button so it shuts off again before completing the start up.
Rooting gives you the ability to do more with your Nook, but all of the B&N interface is accessible too. As long as the Nook is registered to the B&N account with his apps, they'll still be available.
I don't know how old your son is but be aware that parental controls available with the B&N profiles only applies to the B&N interface.
It's a good idea to backup. The tool which allows you to root also has the option to back it up if you want.

Android market is the same as Play Store. You can get Amazon kindle there. Just register with Google in the Play Store and all that stuff becomes available.

My son has been having a great time with the nook being rooted. He did run into a problem and I certainly don't know how to fix it. When he goes into setting and selects General he gets the following message "unfortunately, settings has stopped" and he only gets this when he selects General. He was trying to set the dim settings timer and screen shut off but can't do so. Any way to fix this? Thanks!

Hello, newbie here. I have never rooted and have read a lot of these forums and to me, it seems a bit like a foreign language to me. I got this for Christmas and do not want to brick the device.
Some questions for those of you out there who know what you are doing and hopefully can provide some advice. I wanted this as a reader but am getting frustrated that I cannot get any of my mp4 videos to playback. I've spent the entire day trying to convert into may different configurations of mp4 to playback on my NC to no success. Figured if I rooted I would be able to do that.
1. How easy is it to root the NC and return it to stock if needed?
2. Once the device is rooted, how do I gain access to the Android Market in order to download apps in the market?
3. Will I be able to have the stock B&N library for reading as I did want this as a reader? (nor did I have the money to shell out for a Galaxy Tab)

1. Very easy at this point, the entire process is fairly automated. Burn an iso to an sd card and reboot the nook to root, turn it off and back on 8 times quickly to return to factory settings.
2. Autonooter installs this automatically...
3. Stock book stuff is unaffected by rooting... but you may lose the in-setoee reading stuff in b&n though.

from whatever i have read there is two method one is auto nooter 3 and other is the pre rooted decadence rom..which one should i use..i m tilting more towards pre rooted decedence rom using monster pack .7 .

I just used it on a stock 1.1 Nook Color and it worked great, also installed Gapps just fine and logged into my google account fine. Everything is working on my Nook except the B&N 'Shop' from the main B&N home menu. It starts to load then goes black and nothing is there.
fpga_guy is also having the same problem...is the problem related to monster pack 7 or its a general problem???

I'm not sure, lotta stuff to read on this forum. But I ended up just putting it back to a stock 1.0.1 Nook like it was when I bought it. So it's all back to normal now. It might have something to do with B&N registration, although mine was registered before I rooted and flashed, which is how it's supposed be.
Your registration with B&N may have gotten stale. You can post in the Monster Root Pack thread in devl forum and see what folks are saying.

I rooted with MRP, and also had the broken shop issue. As an experiment, last night I rerooted with autonooter - directly over the already done root, no format, no wipe. (I have a backup in case doing this is dumb, natch.)
Now the shop works.
However, the original MRP device supported the Nook standalone app and the autonooted device (this one, and one which was only autonooted, never MRP'ed) do not support the Nook standalone app.
I strongly prefer the real app. The night mode is actually black, not grey, it more consistently remembers where I left off reading, and deleting a book from the bloody library actually works in the real app. It does not work in the stock library app, and the library app frequently forgets where I was reading when I get back into it.
I'll probably restore from backup this evening - there's too much very good stuff in the real nook app to give up. It is very difficult to get the shop to let you search in that app, but recalibrating the touchscreen makes it more likely that you'll be able to. Since search on the device is so weak in the shop, I'm ready to give it up for the better night mode, the better remembering where I left off, and the vastly better file curation.

I used MRP because I couldn't get autonooter to work, and so I'm in the no-shop state. I can download free apps (angry birds, of course), although I haven't tried to buy any.
Also, gmail has trouble with my email; I get lots of instances when it goes back to the index after displaying a message for a little while, and for some messages this happens before displaying anything. Is this a FC?
Softkeys also seems to be in a somewhat confused state; I don't quite understand what it's trying to do (well, I know it's creating onscreen buttons or remapping vol+- to replace the hard buttons on most phones, but that's my limit). I often get a popup saying that it couldn't do the task as su; is there some softkeys or su doc I haven't found yet?
However, I'm confused. The autonooter image only contains /boot; where does everything else come from? Does it download everything else from the PC, and that's why you have to plug into a PC?
Hmm.. I don't have SDK/ADK installed (and so no adb), is this why autonooter failed for me?
Please bear with me, I'm a long-time command-line unix/linux user, new to android. I've been using the MRP SD card to install zips, so if there's a flashable zip that fixes this, or an image that I can raid (sudo mount -o loop ...), I'm all set. If it's an adb hack, I'm out of luck for a while.

Softkeys is much better now; I like it a lot more. I managed to get it to pop up a root attempt and allowed it, so it works.
Still no joy on the shop front; the non-gmail email app might be better, at least for me, but I do wish that it had collapsible folders. My folder tree is > 20 years old and rather, umm, organic.

I realized last night that whenever I try to visit an https: website (gmail, google/contacts, www.401k.com) the browser FCs on me.
Oddly enough, accessing gmail works just fine, so security bits appear to be different and only one of them is broken.
Does this happen to others?

Autonooter 3.0 is great. It produces a Nook Color with full B&N functionality (the stock reader, including magazines and read-to-me kids books, the in-store browsing) that you can also install apps from the Android Market (and Amazon app store) on.
For me, right now, this is "good enough." When B&N releases its update, I'm going to wait for a pre-rooted package here before upgrading.
The reason I probably won't do anything crazy (like go full CM7) is that I'll probably buy a purpose built Honeycomb tablet for that once the market matures and prices come down.

I was in the same state. Following a suggestion from another thread <http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1005975>, I applied autonooter-3.0.0 to my MRP'd NC 1.1.0, and all is well! AFAICT, you can ignore the instructions for after the reboot, it didn't act like a fresh NC at all.
BTW, not only did the shop FC, the browser couldn't load any https: pages, either. Are you in this situation?

First post! I just got a Nook Color from the Overstock sale and bought two as gifts for my mom and gf. I figured I'll learn all the tricks and how-to's on mine and be able to help them Christmas day. So far, I got myself a SanDisk 16GB Class 4, followed koopakid's awesome tutorial and have successfully installed the latest RC version of CM7. I ran into a bit of trouble getting the Google Apps to install, (just wound up manually adding Gmail from marketplace), and am really happy. But I have a few questions from where to go from here...
After getting CM7 off the SD card, how can I add files to the additional 15GB or so of unused data? And is it possible to do so without constantly removing my card?
I thought I read somewhere to "lock your screen" or something to prevent lag, but what does that mean?
Is it possible to download an app on my PC and install it to the Nook?
What's the best app/settings to tweak a rooted Nook?
I don't mean to be "that guy", but I didn't see a general help thing and don't understand some of the stuff I was reading earlier. Any help and advice is appreciated!

Yes, just plug your Nook into your computer via USB and then select the option in your status bar to mount as USB. It should pop up on your computer as 2 different drives one for your SD card and one for EEMC.

Yes, just download the apk file and then either transfer it over and use a file explorer to install or just email it to yourself/use dropbox.

I'm not really sure what you want here but I would suggest getting a new browser such as Opera or Dolphin first. Another good app to have is Nook Screen Recalibrate for when your screen get a little wonky.
For reading I use Aldiko.
For watch videos I use Mobo Player
And if you haven't yet download tge Amazon Appstore for a free app every day.

So far, the only thing I did was go through the Android Marketplace to get the Dolphin Browser earlier, but was hesitant on any of the other apps like e-Reader stuff, (heard great things about Aldiko), music, and videos.

Yes, the cards are not specific to one Nook so you can go ahead and make them before.

So… I went ahead and tried some tweaking. And now I think my stupid is showing.
I was browsing some apps and figured I’d give the Nook Color Tweak one a go since it’s specifically made for rooted NC’s. After I downloaded & installed it, I noticed I can’t overclock the CPU, (heard it’s stable even at 1GHz) or enable USB Host Mode (so I can drag-n-drop eBooks and app files while the NC is connected to a PC). Apparently I need the “Dalingrin's OC kernel”. And that’s where I got intimidated.
I was thinking about this and I think I’m having two “issues”: 1) I’m not sure how to continue tweaking the NC and 2) since this is my first introduction to Android, I think I need to bang through some tutorials and guides for the OS itself before getting myself overwhelmed with the NC stuff. Time to research…

First off what CM version are you using? Dal's overclock kernel is included in the latest 7.1 stable.
Also, USB host mode is not dragging and dropping enabling its for connecting USB devices like flash drives to the Nook. To enable dragging and dropping on your computer just plug it in via USB and then select the option to mount as USB.

As far as the Kernel, I'm actually using the RC 7.1 from the instructions. Everything I read mentioned that it was included which is a large part of why I'm a bit confused on that stuff.

I'm pretty certain that the kernel was added around nightly 150 whitch is after the RC release. Updating is a pretty simple procedure.

Since I'm giving 2 as gifts this Christmas, I'd like to have a little handy document & files on a thumbdrive I can follow and get this going. I'm thinking about starting from scratch with a nightly in place of a RC and going from there.
Now I just need to figure a PDF reader that allows me to pinch-zoom.

Hi all,
My wife just got a Nook Color for Christmas and I'm itching to root it. Both of our OG evos are rooted and I'm fairly competent with customizing the ever living crap out of them (I'm running MIUI and love it).
I'm looking for suggestions for a cool but most importantly STABLE setup for her nook color. I see there aren't as many options as the Evo, and the rooting process seems a bit more involved, but I'm sure I can figure that part out.
I already ran the 1.41 update and read all of the basic steps for root. She doesn't want to lose the B&N functionality (not sure why), so is my best bet just to root it with a bootable SD without loading CWM recovery? Using manualnooter that would just leave her with the B&N functions but would also install an alternate launcher and allow her to install android market and 3rd party apps, correct?
I've done quite a bit of reading up but I just want to get some opinions...she's afraid I'm going to "mess it up" like I've done to my evo quite a few times, but its never been anything a clean wipe can't fix so I don't see the issue haha.

Your best bet is CM7.1 on a SD card. Just make sure that's an SanDisk Class 4 card, otherwise the performance will be quite miserable. Just grep the CM7.1 zip, the latest gapps-gb zip and greens sd installer and do it. You will be done in 15 min and you will never go back. I got my NC also for x-mas and used CM7.1 on a SD card for 2 days before I installed it on the internal memory (emmc).

I've rooted 1.4.1 on my Nook Color and blocked further updates. It's provides what I refer to as the "B&N Walled Garden (with a gate)". It's straight B&N in terms of functionality, and all the B&N functions (subscriptions, Conde Nast mags and enhanced books,free read-in-store) work fine. If she intends to use any of the B&N content, it's a nice experience. If she doesn't, then, frankly, you can do a lot more a lot more easily with Cyanogenmod loaded on it.
Using manualnooter that would just leave her with the B&N functions but would also install an alternate launcher and allow her to install android market and 3rd party apps, correct?

If you root the B&N software, yes.
Alternately, you could load Cyanogenmod either internally on eMMC (replacing B&N), or externally, in a dual-boot SD configuration, which would let you leave the BN setup stock or rooted. The two remain completely separate from each other.
I've done quite a bit of reading up but I just want to get some opinions...she's afraid I'm going to "mess it up" like I've done to my evo quite a few times, but its never been anything a clean wipe can't fix so I don't see the issue haha.

The NC is pretty bullet-proof. If you decide to root B&N firmware, be sure to block automatic OTA updates, or it will self-destruct when they push an update, and it will be your fault, buster!
I've rooted my wife's new Nook Tablet, and she's quite enamored with it. Adding functionality from the Market has been a big plus, and I've got her music synchronized with our Google TV setup as well.
Thanks both of you. I went the route of booting CM7 from the SD card and it was actually really easy and runs pretty flawlessly. Unfortunately my wife is a pain and doesn't seem to appreciate how much better it is so she just sticks with the stock stuff 99% of the time haha. I might have to get my own now just out of principle!

You can always add a few Market apps to her mostly-stock setup with the Nook Color App Manager. I used it to add a few apps to my wife's rooted Nook Tablet. If I hadn't told her, she'd have thought those were stock apps.
But yeah, definitely get your own!

I edited devicemanager.db using SQLite. Open devicemanager.db and change registry->com.bn.device.fota.mode from "auto" to "manual".
That's all I've done, and no further OTA updates. There are more involved methods, but this seems to work.
I am new to this, with a B&N Nook HD+ tablet.
Let me just say, this is a terrific place with lots of knowledgeable people in Android and Nook.
I rooted my tablet, and love how it all works.
There is one nagging issue I have. It seems that B&N appeared to install 2 apps that I keep deleting, but they keep re-appearing.
Spotify and Crosswords.
I do not want these apps and wish they would stop installing themselves.
I used SQLite to set in the databases, install foreign apps, and also the other setting to not over the air, install Nook updates.
I tried to find a setting in the various databases to tell the Nook to stop installing these free apps, but cannot find it.
Does anyone know how to stop the Nook from installing these free apps?
I suspect at some point BN might install some free app automatically that might attempt to unroot this device.

Get the free Gemini Application Manager on Play Store and block the apps. It adds them to a database that says to ignore them. But that won't help with new apps.
Edit: Gemini gave the warning that ics might be able to override this setting. It did. The app came back. And I did what you did and could find no databases to stop it.

Been meaning to track this down for years and finally got around to doing it. The sneaky app that's doing the reinstalls is com.bn.bnappinstaller
Use your app of choice to freeze this (on the off chance you want to have this bloatware factory run again in the future)
That's it, you can uninstall with wild abandon and they will never come back

I was relieved to find this because my husband's HD is "running in the red" because of apps like Spotify, Hulu+, etc., which come unbidden "from the cloud". He'd like to have room for apps of his own choosing (not to mention space for the OS to do its thing...).
But....I tried this and it didn't work. They are back again
