Hi All,
First post! I just got a Nook Color from the Overstock sale and bought two as gifts for my mom and gf. I figured I'll learn all the tricks and how-to's on mine and be able to help them Christmas day. So far, I got myself a SanDisk 16GB Class 4, followed koopakid's awesome tutorial and have successfully installed the latest RC version of CM7. I ran into a bit of trouble getting the Google Apps to install, (just wound up manually adding Gmail from marketplace), and am really happy. But I have a few questions from where to go from here...
After getting CM7 off the SD card, how can I add files to the additional 15GB or so of unused data? And is it possible to do so without constantly removing my card?
I thought I read somewhere to "lock your screen" or something to prevent lag, but what does that mean?
Is it possible to download an app on my PC and install it to the Nook?
What's the best app/settings to tweak a rooted Nook?
I don't mean to be "that guy", but I didn't see a general help thing and don't understand some of the stuff I was reading earlier. Any help and advice is appreciated!

Yes, just plug your Nook into your computer via USB and then select the option in your status bar to mount as USB. It should pop up on your computer as 2 different drives one for your SD card and one for EEMC.

Yes, just download the apk file and then either transfer it over and use a file explorer to install or just email it to yourself/use dropbox.

I'm not really sure what you want here but I would suggest getting a new browser such as Opera or Dolphin first. Another good app to have is Nook Screen Recalibrate for when your screen get a little wonky.
For reading I use Aldiko.
For watch videos I use Mobo Player
And if you haven't yet download tge Amazon Appstore for a free app every day.

Thank you KK! I'm definitely going to trying moving stuff on there once I get home! So far, the only thing I did was go through the Android Marketplace to get the Dolphin Browser earlier, but was hesitant on any of the other apps like e-Reader stuff, (heard great things about Aldiko), music, and videos.
As far as that lock screen, I have to find that post. It know it mentioned something about the screen behaving laggy or something if not locked when putting it down. That or I could be way off and misread it.
One last question: I got 2 more Nooks as presents and don't want to open them, but would it be possible to follow the same basic install using SD on my Nook and simply including those pre-made cards in the unopened Nooks or does this stuff have to be done Nook by Nook so to speak?

Yes, the cards are not specific to one Nook so you can go ahead and make them before.

So… I went ahead and tried some tweaking. And now I think my stupid is showing.
I was browsing some apps and figured I’d give the Nook Color Tweak one a go since it’s specifically made for rooted NC’s. After I downloaded & installed it, I noticed I can’t overclock the CPU, (heard it’s stable even at 1GHz) or enable USB Host Mode (so I can drag-n-drop eBooks and app files while the NC is connected to a PC). Apparently I need the “Dalingrin's OC kernel”. And that’s where I got intimidated.
I was thinking about this and I think I’m having two “issues”: 1) I’m not sure how to continue tweaking the NC and 2) since this is my first introduction to Android, I think I need to bang through some tutorials and guides for the OS itself before getting myself overwhelmed with the NC stuff. Time to research…

First off what CM version are you using? Dal's overclock kernel is included in the latest 7.1 stable.
Also, USB host mode is not dragging and dropping enabling its for connecting USB devices like flash drives to the Nook. To enable dragging and dropping on your computer just plug it in via USB and then select the option to mount as USB.

Where is the icon for me slamming my head agains the wall? Or wearing a dunce cap? That's not at all what I was thinking the USB mount thing meant. I.D.I.O.T.
As far as the Kernel, I'm actually using the RC 7.1 from the instructions. Everything I read mentioned that it was included which is a large part of why I'm a bit confused on that stuff.

I'm pretty certain that the kernel was added around nightly 150 whitch is after the RC release. Updating is a pretty simple procedure.

Thanks KK! I did some searching for a nightly and how to flash, but I'm actually thinking about just starting from scratch if only for reference. Since I'm giving 2 as gifts this Christmas, I'd like to have a little handy document & files on a thumbdrive I can follow and get this going. I'm thinking about starting from scratch with a nightly in place of a RC and going from there.
Now I just need to figure a PDF reader that allows me to pinch-zoom.

Long story short: I bought my Nook to root it. I'm not a complete moron, but I'm a little overwhelmed by all of the options for modifying the Nook. I have tons of iOS experience since I have an iPhone business on the side, so I'm not afraid to mess around with something.
The problem is, the only Android device I've spent more than 20 minutes with is the Samsung Captivate, which was ridiculously easy to root and then unlock so I could sell it.
Other than that, not much Android experience.
I bought the Nook because I need a portable device to view documents and the occasional entertainment. I'm a pilot and instantly recognized the advantage of being able to take aviation publications with me everywhere, including the cockpit. I considered the iPad since I'm intimately familiar with iOS, but the cost was a little higher than I wanted to go.
So, here's what I need: a VERY stable Nook that can efficiently read PDF files, H.264 movies and still maintain respectable battery life. I will be heading overseas with less than dependable access to internet, so I need something that's pretty worry-free since I might not be able to worry with finding a fix online.
Where to start?
I've already rooted it using AutoNooter, but it seems wonky at best. The N button rarely works at all and SoftKeys isn't much help either. I currently haven't found a way to go "back" in the Market app, and still haven't figured out how to sign in on my YouTube account.
So, what are your suggestions for setup? Please be detailed with your suggestions and save the flaming for someone who cares.
Thanks!
I didn't like the stock rom either...
I went immdiatly to nookie froyo, which is the most stable rom other then stock.
You should try it.
You should also try cm7 and it varients, but those are less stable.
you can check out the tutorials on remapping the volume keys for back and menu, although I find soft keys a valiable option.
Can you point me to the best method of install for Froyo? Is it better on internal or keeping it on the SD card? I'm not worried about warranty or restoring the stock ROM, so which one is best overall?

Try it on the SD card first, just to start. If you screw up, you can just format the card and start over, it's relatively pain free that way. But it will run a little snappier on the actual Nook eMMC, but you can always do that later.
Another factor is that B&N will be updating all Nook Colors to Froyo in April. If you run off an SD card until then, then you can root the Nook after that update (with new Autonooter built for that new update), and you will have a more stable Froyo since it will be a professional kernel built for the hardware.
You'll need a Sandisk Class 4 or 6 uSD card or a Transcend Class 6 (unless you have already bought something, in which go ahead and try that card).
The build is at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=922324
Yeah......about that "don't flash the internal memory" part.....
Everything went great until I rebooted and now its stuck at the Android screen with the flashing cursor.
Now I'm just trying to figure out how to restore it. Ugh.
I'm using a 32GB SanDisk SDHC Class 6 card, BTW.
EDIT: Well, I was able to get the build from your link running from the SD card, but all of the processes suddenly and continually fail. All I get is pop up after pop up about errors.
I'm done screwing around with this for today. If I can't get something usable by tomorrow night, I'm selling this POS and getting an iPad. This isn't worth it just to save $100.
I don't know what all you did to the internal memory, but chances are this will work to get back to stock.
http://nookdevs.com/Flash_back_to_clean_stock_ROM
If that doesn't work then

Softkeys works, and I use it, but it's...not intuitive...this page made things clear for me. Reading through this should get your n key working and whatnot.
http://nookdevs.com/NookColor_Default_Launcher
Disabling the service in the softkeys settings was good for me. That stupid little button was always in the wrong place no matter where I put it and wasn't useful anyhow. I also didn't install home switcher or whatever. If you get your n button set wrong, you can just clear the defaults from the app settings for whatever app is set to the n button.
Sounds like you got it rooted and everything, but here is a link for reference anyhow.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=942424
A note on those instructions: youtube did nothing but crash on me. The purpose of logging in with youtube is to get your device linked to your google account so you can get into the market. I didn't use youtube, i think i used gmail or the market itself or something. I don't remember. I just uninstalled youtube, you don't need it. Youtube video's still download and play in the default video player if you visit youtube.com from the web browser.
As far as your options for operating systems. I haven't used froyo, and haven't spent much time with honeycomb, so grain of salt and stuff. Plus it really depends on what you need/want.
Note: after booting a fresh burn for the first time, just walk away for five minutes. I'm not sure why (maybe something to do with the not quite jit doing it's thing?), but it will be more stable if you do.
Froyo gives flash and slightly better performance over stock. I think video is on par with stock, but it could be worse, i'm not sure. It's almost certainly not better. I can't speak for stability, as I haven't tried it. I think bluetooth is possible but not realistic? I know occip got the chip responding, but I haven't seen anything indicating it's useable. Links in previous posts so i won't make another.
Cyanogenmod gives all that froyo gives plus bluetooth support. Video framerate is poor (movies, not games and whatnot). Stability isn't as good as stock. Mostly it's fine but every once in a while things start force closing like mad and i have to reboot. Also battery life isn't good with cyanogenmod. Sleep has been disabled as there is a bug with it. It will still last over a day without a charge though. It's what i use day to day. Really amazing and fast moving. Seems like every day a new major bug is fixed or a whole new piece of hardware is working. Linkie:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000957
Honeycomb is really cool and it's amazing what deeperblue did (without much source omgwat?) but it's still kinda just a toy until google releases all the source code. No flash, no hardware accelerated video, no bluetooth, no reason to use it, other than aesthetics. Annoying ui glitches in portrait mode. Neat and worth an sd burn to play with, but not for using day to day in my opinion.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=936995
Of course there is no need to choose one! There are a couple option for multibooting in the forums and I intend to get around to combining a few to triple boot. Right now this is what I use:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=947698
I'm set up to boot rooted stock off internal memory and cm7 off of uSD
P.S. If you just want it to work and be a full tablet it might be worth the extra $150 or so for an IPad. The nook has been fantastically useful for my needs and I don't think i've had this much fun with a piece of kit since my first apple II. On the other hand I've wasted a fair number of hours reading about and "bricking" the thing so...ymmv depending on what your needs/wants are.
Hi, Im new here, too.
Id like to do this "Go back in Root Explorer, and in system/app, mount as r-w and rename Phone.apk and TelephonyProvider.apk to anything else (adding .bak onto the end would be fine)." But I can't change the permission...
Even I do habe only CWM 3.0.0.6 and like to have the newest one (3.0.1.0) and Iam using right now the Phirmod V5.1
Has anyone some hinds? Cheers
Can you elaborate on "can't change permissions"? Can you not find the option, or are you making the change and its not working?
For your clockwork upgrade question, is your recovery internal, or on a bootable SD?

Thanks for the detailed response, ylixir. I'm attempting to go back to stock now and will definitely try your suggestions.
I'm still going to try Nookie since the general consensus is that it's the most stable. I don't care about BT or even Flash since I'll just be using this mostly for mobile document viewing in Afghanistan.
Thanks again and will update with my results.

I know you're new and all, but generally its considered rude to jump into someone else's thread and ask your own question. You'll probably get a lot more visibility (and subsequently a solution to your problem) by making your own thread.
Thanks!

Dude! The forum rules tell you to search and piggyback existing threads before making your own thread. The idea is that the closely related information is localized, and searching is made much more easier without having multiple threads on the same subject...

Well, I've got it back to stock 1.1 now. I'm VERY happy to see that since I still might sell this thing if I can't make some headway with a usable ROM.

Well, this is the first forum I've ever seen that operates that way.
Well, just tried running Froyo from the SD card and it just sits at the Android splash screen (the animated one). It also did this last night, but I thought it was because of the non-functional Froyo I had flashed internally.
I guess I'll give HC a shot to see if anything actually works on this device.
Just ran HC and although I finally got past the "decrypted data" error (after three re-images and flashing, no less), I dunno.
I'm going to try rooting the stock 1.1 again and see how that goes. If I can't get comfortable with that, then I'm done. I have better things to do besides sitting around for hours and hours trying to get something to be remotely practical for every day use.
If I wanted a tinkering project, I'd buy an old car.
Autonooker is super easy to get the stock ROM working as an Android tablet.
I'm sure it's stated on the wiki that Nookie Froyo and other ROMs are in development and not meant for stable systems.
Anyway, hope Autonooker works for you
Good news! Looks like perseverence pays off because rooting 1.1 seems to have worked perfectly this time.
I am fully signed in on YouTube and email, and all the buttons are working properly.
Now that I've finally gotten that out of the way, is there a way to OC the stock ROM? Its not really a need, just curious LOL. I've seen SetCPU mentioned a few times, but IIRC its intended for 2.2 and up only. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Also, best PDF reader for stock ROM?

Get a Terminal Emulator from the Market. Now type in the following:
If running off SD
Code:
su
mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mmcblk1p2 /system
If running off EMMC
Code:
su
mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mmcblk0p5 /system
Hope this helps.

Install a new launcher, such as Zeam, Launcher Pro, or ADW. I prefer Zeam myself. Then you'll be able to immediately see new apps you've installed.
Alright so I have a Nook color and desperatley would like to try the Android OS on it. But I have never really toyed around with it on anything before....but it really intrigues me.
What kernel works best?? I saw another thread about wi-fi issues is this prevelant??
Thanks so much!
Well, you are running Android -- that's what Barnes and Noble uses. The downside is that they've limited it, so you can't do things like get apps from the Android Market.
The easiest first step is to root your NC using the latest version of Autonooter (search the forum). Prior to doing that, you need to make sure your Nook Color is running the latest official update from B&N (check the B&N website under Nook Color/Support). Autonooter (with a big thanks to those who contribute to it) is a quick and simple way to get going.
That will give you full access to the version of Android on the Nook (2.1 if I recall), as well as the Market apps. Play with that for awhile, then start exploring the other Android versions -- which you can run off of a SD card as a separate OS to make sure they work for you (then flash to rom is you want to).
Right now I'd vote for CM7 with working Bluetooth as the most useful OS available on this forum. The latest version also fixes video issues. Another version of CM7 is Phiremod, nicely packaged with some additions (CM7 is still in development -- so Phiremod won't typically use the latest CM7 version, which is OK).
Most of all, learn to use the search function on this forum -- it will save you lots of time!
As far as performance...is the Nook comparable to many tablets?
I agree that autonooter is the best first step. Use a launcher to get a 'feel" for android and if you're happy don't go any further. If you feel you want the "full" experience, than I also agree that CM7 is the way to go. Also, installing CM7 is pretty easy if you follow the guild on the Nook Color wiki via http://www.cyanogenmod.com/devices/nook-color

This isn't an easy question to answer because it's about half the performance of the Xoom and new Galaxy Tabs that are coming out, but there is nothing that pushes the hardware yet. For an early adopter of android tablets, I think the nook is perfect because it preforms great and the price tag cannot be beat!
Compared to other non-official tablets, it out preforms them in some ways, specifically the screen. THe nook uses the best (I think?) type of touch screen and offers a great viewing angle.
Autonooter 3 -- something is definitely wrong.
Used auto-nooter 3 on our 1.1 NC. Computer runs slackware. md5sum was correct. Burned it to a Patriot class 10 8GB microSD card. Inserted the card, plugged in the USB. After the android showed up NOTHING happened as described in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=942424.
There was no "sign in" at the Android welcome screen to skip.
No "location services"
Wandered around logging into youtube and gmail. Youtube has both a user name and a user gmail account. Tried both.
Gmail account(s) refused to sync.
Market opened, and we attempted to download several free apps --
Got some sort of 'downloading' message, but nothing ever did. Progress meter, if that's what it was, showed no movement at all.
Restored it and tried again. Twice. Slightly different results, but NEVER able to download from the Market.
It's obvious that SOMETHING is wrong, I just have no idea what it might be.
I'm ready, willing and able to follow instructions, but when what I see bears no relationship to the instructions given I have problems.
I hope it's obvious to somebody what I'm doing wrong, because I'm stumped.

I used Autonooter 3.0 and it worked for me. Check your wifi. If it shows connecting/disconnecting, it's a wifi problem - especially if the download progessing bar is not moving. See my note in wifi http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11458921&postcount=1
I have been trying to install CM7 on my NC, but I keep getting assert failed error. I can install Nookie Froyo without issue and restoring stock. I am guessing that I am doing install from CWR/SDCard all wrong, as when I use SDCards that I write with Win32Diskimg it always works fine. My guess is that this is because when istalling from this method, you don't need to worry about the state of your /data and /system.
Can someone point me in the right direction?

hi,
Not sure what you are doing wrong, but I found this post very detailed,
a bit dated now, but should still work:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=960542&page=16
From your comments below: you do have to reformat several partitions,
CM7 uses a different file system, EXT4. This also requires more recent
CWM versions and different kernel on the recovery boot (follow instructions
in one of the links in the thread above)
Hope this helps,
Peter

Oh for Pete's sake!! I had no idea the install was that involved. I thought you could install directly from CWM 3.0.0.5, I had no idea you had to prepare your SDCard in this manner... and that you had to install market separately. I am glad I asked because I would not have figured this out for myself, especially with the instruction set 16 pages into the thread, I'd have given up long before getting that far.
Thank you very much for your help... I am in the process of doing this... cross your fingers.

Ok! Installed CM7 without a hitch...
I must say, very nice... once I was able to get the instructions for the install and do it the right way it worked first time out. I didn't install the OC Kernel, but I may in the near future.
Does the CM7 Still have issues when going to sleep? Guess I'll find out for myself.
migrax
CM7 doesn't sleep so you will see the battery drop much quicker. Get an app/widget to toggle wifi and this will help preserve your battery while it is "sleeping".
I would also recommend getting one to toggle brightness as well so you can easily set it to whatever is appropriate for your lighting situation at the time.
Wow, I love Playon and Audiogalaxy.
This is the reason I wanted an Android Tablet. I wanted to be able to read books and use video and audio on demand. After I installed Flash 10.2 this thing has become the multimedia machine I wanted.
I am watching Hulu!!!!
Now if I can get some really cool games to run, I will be a happy camper.
Can you recommed an app to toggle wifi? Also I notice that while watching Hulu that the audio is kind of chirping in my headphones. I'll have to see if aI can adjust the audio properties.
Thanks to all for helping me get this far.

HI,
Sounds like you have everything running well!
One tool that I really like is an open source eBook library management
program that runs on PC/MAC - Calibre. It downloads covers, reviews, and will
convert to different ebook formats. There is a paid app in the app store
to access it directly: Calibre Library, or you use Calibre along with Nook as
an external disk drive (or via Dropbox even)

Can you recommed an app to toggle wifi? Also I notice that while watching Hulu that the audio is kind of chirping in my headphones. I'll have to see if aI can adjust the audio properties.
Thanks to all for helping me get this far.

So I am reading the link posted here.
If I have no need to ever return to stock Nook, do I have to do a "nand backup"?
[RECOVERY] EXT4 Compatible Bootable Clockwork SD Card 0.1 (+ tasty treats)
Should I still use this one as recovery? It seems a bit dated?
Thanks for any help.
Hi all,
My wife just got a Nook Color for Christmas and I'm itching to root it. Both of our OG evos are rooted and I'm fairly competent with customizing the ever living crap out of them (I'm running MIUI and love it).
I'm looking for suggestions for a cool but most importantly STABLE setup for her nook color. I see there aren't as many options as the Evo, and the rooting process seems a bit more involved, but I'm sure I can figure that part out.
I already ran the 1.41 update and read all of the basic steps for root. She doesn't want to lose the B&N functionality (not sure why), so is my best bet just to root it with a bootable SD without loading CWM recovery? Using manualnooter that would just leave her with the B&N functions but would also install an alternate launcher and allow her to install android market and 3rd party apps, correct?
I've done quite a bit of reading up but I just want to get some opinions...she's afraid I'm going to "mess it up" like I've done to my evo quite a few times, but its never been anything a clean wipe can't fix so I don't see the issue haha.
Thanks everyone!
Your best bet is CM7.1 on a SD card. Just make sure that's an SanDisk Class 4 card, otherwise the performance will be quite miserable. Just grep the CM7.1 zip, the latest gapps-gb zip and greens sd installer and do it. You will be done in 15 min and you will never go back. I got my NC also for x-mas and used CM7.1 on a SD card for 2 days before I installed it on the internal memory (emmc).

I've rooted 1.4.1 on my Nook Color and blocked further updates. It's provides what I refer to as the "B&N Walled Garden (with a gate)". It's straight B&N in terms of functionality, and all the B&N functions (subscriptions, Conde Nast mags and enhanced books, free read-in-store) work fine. If she intends to use any of the B&N content, it's a nice experience. If she doesn't, then, frankly, you can do a lot more a lot more easily with Cyanogenmod loaded on it.

If you root the B&N software, yes.
Alternately, you could load Cyanogenmod either internally on eMMC (replacing B&N), or externally, in a dual-boot SD configuration, which would let you leave the BN setup stock or rooted. The two remain completely separate from each other.

The NC is pretty bullet-proof. If you decide to root B&N firmware, be sure to block automatic OTA updates, or it will self-destruct when they push an update, and it will be your fault, buster!
I've rooted my wife's new Nook Tablet, and she's quite enamored with it. Adding functionality from the Market has been a big plus, and I've got her music synchronized with our Google TV setup as well.
Thanks both of you. I went the route of booting CM7 from the SD card and it was actually really easy and runs pretty flawlessly. Unfortunately my wife is a pain and doesn't seem to appreciate how much better it is so she just sticks with the stock stuff 99% of the time haha. I might have to get my own now just out of principle!

You can always add a few Market apps to her mostly-stock setup with the Nook Color App Manager. I used it to add a few apps to my wife's rooted Nook Tablet. If I hadn't told her, she'd have thought those were stock apps.
But yeah, definitely get your own!

How did you block updates? I've seen several mentions about doing this but nothing definitive. Thanks!

I edited devicemanager.db using SQLite. Open devicemanager.db and change registry->com.bn.device.fota.mode from "auto" to "manual".
That's all I've done, and no further OTA updates. There are more involved methods, but this seems to work.
Hi I'm new to this forum and new to the nook world. My parents recently bought my son a nook hd for Xmas and he really likes it but as I help him go thru it we see there isn't a whole lot you can do with it and there doesn't seem to be many apps that he can use. I've done some searching online and on you tube on how to root and have come across a lot of info to set the nook as an android but they were all for nook color. Some of the features these videos offered would certainly be things I know my son would enjoy. The other thing I came across was rooting the nook without voiding the warranty, is this something that can be done? Any help and direction will be much appreciated. My apologies if this is something that has already been posted I tried searching but wasn't lucky finding such a thread.
I personally own an ipad mini so no too familiar with the nook so this is certainly new territory for me. Thanks in advance for your help.
Rooting will void your warranty. However, you can install an Android ROM, called CM10, to a microsd card and run it off of the card, never touching the HD's internal storage. For more info see this thread :

You actually don't have to worry about warranty with rooting, there is a simple way to restore to complete stock. Just reboot 8 times, interupting the process before it completes. Go here if you want to root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2062613, CM10 is still a little buggy...
PS, rebooting means holding down the power button 10 sec to completely turn off.
This is true. I actually prefer rooted stock to CM10 as of now. For someone just starting out, my advice would still be to install CM10 to an SD card. They can play around with it and see what their HD or HD+ can do when it's unfettered. And they don't have to worry about messing up their Nook, ot about B&N updates taking root away. Then, when they feel more confident, they can root stock and really enjoy their Nook. But either approach will work fine in the end!

Thank you so much for this information. I do have some more questions to your post. How exactly would I reboot, do you mean reboot the nook 8 times how would I do this process. Also, we have purchased some apps so if we do the rooting, will my son lose those apps, will we need to back up the nook before rooting. Sorry for all the questions I just want to make sure I have the full understanding before I proceed. Thanks!
For what it is worth, the nook hd already has Android ice cream sandwich installed. It is the home screen launcher and omission of certain Google apps that make it appear limited. In fact, without rooting, you can follow instructions posted at B&N's website how to sideload an alternate launcher and many Android apps to unleash lots of features.
E.g., Chrome works perfectly when side loaded. In order to side load without root, install on a PC the nook hd drivers, the android SDK, the nook HD SDK, and then use the android debug bridge from a command prompt to install apps (*.apk format) to a connected nook. Also, epubs from the Google Play store should be accessible via the Sony Reader android app if side loaded. I installed launcher pro, drop box, amazon kindle, Sony Reader, amazon mp3, Facebook, yahoo mail, adobe acrobat Reader, and neutron player without a problem. You can still access all the standard B&N apps by toggling between launchers with the n button. I did all this yesterday on 2.0.5. B&N posted in their online developer Web pages incredibly specific directions on how to set up windows, Mac and Linux to side load.
set an afternoon aside as it is tedious, but follow the instructions at
https://nookdeveloper.zendesk.com/entries/21943338-nook-developer-start-up-guide#_Sideloading
Note that the instructions are directed to downloading your own written apps. However, you can download Android apk files all over the web and side load them to the nook using the described process.
Enjoy and good luck!

If you want to completely reset the device to the way it was when you first took it out of the box (unrooted, unregistered, and all your added stuff erased), then you interrupt the boot process 8 times in a row by holding the power button so it shuts off again before completing the start up.
Rooting gives you the ability to do more with your Nook, but all of the B&N interface is accessible too. As long as the Nook is registered to the B&N account with his apps, they'll still be available.
I don't know how old your son is but be aware that parental controls available with the B&N profiles only applies to the B&N interface.
It's a good idea to backup. The tool which allows you to root also has the option to back it up if you want.
Thanks to everyone that helped so I did the Root/Gapps from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2062613 and it all works my son is excited but now we just need to know how to install other apps on there. Android market is the same as Play Store. You can get Amazon kindle there. Just register with Google in the Play Store and all that stuff becomes available.

Hi there,
My son has been having a great time with the nook being rooted. He did run into a problem and I certainly don't know how to fix it. When he goes into setting and selects General he gets the following message "unfortunately, settings has stopped" and he only gets this when he selects General. He was trying to set the dim settings timer and screen shut off but can't do so. Any way to fix this? Thanks!

Try not to double post questions. It gets confusing for us. I answered in my thread earlier.
