Change.Org Bootloader Petition - Motorola Droid 3

http://t.co/C0zecr04 <-For all devices. Maybe if the bootloader unlocks, Hash can get some help. One petition on change.org was posted here for Facetime and deaf people on AT&T and they changed their policies. Maybe we can get more signatures. It already has 9000 and needs 6000 more.
Hash retweeted it.

i sign any and all patitions for unlocking bootloaders

I thought something like this has been done and didn't get anywhere? Doesnt stop me from signing though. Also our bootloader being unlocked doesn't help us without having source for all the hardware and such which I believe Hash pointed out previously if I remember right. We'd still be in the same boat as with kexec.

True, but it would still make it easier as devs wouldn't have to spend time working on bootloader bypasses.

It's probably is too late to get anything but Kexec is a great fallback.

Droid 3 source code

Motorola just released the source code for the Droid 3 on Sourceforge.
Source code
I was just going to start a thread on this edgan
Pardon my French but...
**** YEAH!
So does source mean we just don't have to find an exploit, and can create compatible, rootable ROMs without cracking the official one? Or does it mean we can get root, too?
It means neither. You'd still need signed keys to flash anything created from the released source code.
However, if there are any exploits, having the source might assist in finding them.
Hell yes!

Every single Android device must have the source code released. It's part of the AOSP license, these companies can't use Android without releasing this code.
Yay!
Sent from my DROID3 using XDA App
Yeah I heard that the source code wont help much either.
BUT(not related to this)
I think we have a bigger chance of getting an official sbf now. Reason being is that there is an update that is being pushed to test and dev devices (I think it's 5.6.960 or something), hopefully somewhere between this road a moto employee or tester can give back to the community haha
So a few things of note, and I wanted to articulate this right, those of you in the IRC have heard this rambling.
1) Watchdog. Do NOT, under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES try to kill a Kernel process. That's another sure-fire way to trip the eFuse, and brick your phone, save you have a SMD compatible JTAG for the FPGA. (If that last part went over your head, DEFINITELY do not attempt)
2) Kernel file "pause_on_oops". If a kernel module is improperly loaded, modified, or unloaded, it will cause a lot of wonky stuff to happen in the kernel. On any kernel panic, the kernel halts instead of dropping to a debugger. It also sets a few flags that stop the kernel from booting, and that in turn sets more flags that stop booting, ad nauseum.
This still leaves bugs and stuff to explore. Race conditions, buffer overflows and the likes are still likely targets.
@royolpunk
Have to agree on that, i'm not too fussed tbo but i'd like to fix the blue camera tint.

Obviously, having source code once we root will be of enormous help in developing quality kernels and ROMs (like cyanogenmod!), but won't help rooting right now. All the doors are locked, but now we know who lives inside
So speaking of race conditions, is there any point to exploring the bootloader-to-recovery race condition (via messing with the sdcard slot) that allowed the Droid Incredible to be root (even before Unrevoked figured out a general HTC exploit kit), or are we talking apples to oranges?

Good idea, give people even quicker ways to softbrick their phones. Until we have an SBF, any mods are incredibly dangerous to the brick-iness of our phone.

If the recovery weren't signed and verified, we could flash an alternate recovery and not have to worry about any of this bricking non-sense.
In other words, it is very easy to make these devices effectively brick-proof, but we are unable to because of their silly restrictions.

S-off discussion: Can we look to Rezound for help on root?

Hey guys, it looks like the HTC Rezound is close to getting S-Off by Evil. If you didn't know, the Rezound has had a locked bootloader all this time just like us. Can we look to how they got root to help with our own efforts. The method of getting S-Off between these two phones can't be that different, can it?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1375598
EDIT: Apparently links to his site are prohibited. But just google "s-off think tank" to get to Evil's site.

I'm pretty sure the internals are very very alike too. The only difference I've read is the screen size. They both came out around the same time, so I'd think they'd be locked in a very similar fashion.

Look, I don't like the guy and I think his attitude is terrible and he deserved the ban he got. But can we refrain from saying stuff that isn't true? It does nothing for guiding people to an eventual unlocked rezound (or vivid in this case). Open is supposed to be was android is about... not squelching possible advancements based off a personal problem.

As I appreciate your enthusiasm for moderating me. The statement was made intentionally. As I have had this thread topic in multiple forums and the dev in question prompts flaming from discussion as to why we can't link his site. Most people on here either love or hate the guy, I am cool with him. My statement is made because that's the reasoning behind not linking his site. I can post it when I did or we could wait until it was asked, I chose the pre emptive approach to avoid someone literally saying something negative about the dev and xda. If you have an issue with my statement please address a senior mod or admin.

Considering their history I wouldn't get my hopes up too high.
Let's be happy if they finally manage to give us an update that adresses the known issues (battery/camera/keyboard). I'm only gonna believe it when I see it and am actually able to use it.

Just for understanding:
How will you be able to do that?
I thought someone tried this already on a different thread, the only ccaveat is that the radio code won't get reverted...
1) boot into CWR
2) Wipe/format system and data partition
3) perform full restore
If all that fails, in the worst case I'll just reflash bacck to the vivo (or maybe retail) SBF.

I'd argue that the update would merely be to 2.3.x where x > 4. Maybe the Brazil sbf already has the fixes and only thing they're testing is the bell carrier customizations.

Realistically, how many people do you think sign up for Motorola's betas? And who would you think sign up for them?
Given that the original topic on the Motorola forums has so few views, the chances of one or more XDA users getting into the beta is fairly high I reckon.

It will root your phone, but will collect and send a lot of data to China in order to do so.
Kingo claim that they no longer collect your IMEI, but say nothing about device ID/serial numbers etc that they have been caught sending unencrypted to their server before.
I do not trust them at all and the fact that their app is currently not allowed on XDA says a lot.
Edit - Also, the guy saying he is too lazy to find out what is wrong with the Kingo app is just the sort of person that creators of malware rely upon to both use and propagate their apps. Laziness is no excuse to use and recommend use of questionable software, ever.
