I tried imilka's ROM (v06) as I want AOSP, but after a few days I decided to go back to stock until it is based on a genuine GT-N7000 image. Just a slight bit too flaky for me.

I am on ICS Stunner v4.3 now. Better than imilka's AOSP. Highly recommended!
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA
The best rom for me is ICS Stunner 4.3. I noticed a few problems while using double twist but other than that its amazing and not battery consumer. I can last 16-18 hours with moderate whatsapp use and surfing
+1 for Stunner.
There's 3 types of roms:
A) Stock Rom (aka OEM's ROM) - the rom that's shipped with the device.
B) Custom Rom (ie/ "in between roms") - these are like VillianROMs, they're OEM based roms but altered by a 3rd-party developer (eg xda) for the *better*
C) AOSP Rom (ie/ based on Google's Source Code) - examples are AOSP, AOKP, CyanogenMod, MIUI.
For any new device, you always get access to A-type roms first, then B-type, then C-typer...understood?
For me, C > B > A in-terms of overall experience (as long as they offer you the features you want and are stable).
And in terms of C-type roms; MIUI > CM9 = AOKP > AOSP.
...other important points, use your favourite launcher with any rom, have all primary apps inverted (white -> black background), use a dark theme and replace the cyan detailing with a crimson one*.
So what's the best (imho) right now: neobuddy's ICS-Stunner v4.3
It's nearly 100% perfect. The only problems is a little stability issues (rare), no Super-optimized kernel (one that clocks higher while saving battery), and no support for the S-Pen.
Otherwise: maxicet's MidNote v3.1
It's not as fluid as ICS Stunner, doesn't have the AOKP options, but its decent daily driver and the S Pen works.
*Not the best example, but this red theme would save you lots of battery life, especially on a AMOLED screen:

Yes.
There already is one or two beta's. I'd advise against those at this stage. The CMT will likely support the AT&T version. They will also (officially)support the international version but that would be in 6 months time from now. (Just like they did on the i9000).

It's already available, he just hasn't posted it on xda. PM him if you want a copy or just wait a couple hours for his OpeningPost to change. Its normally just updating the system/apps to the latest with a little bug fixes and going back to ext4 (which should make things even smoother).

Take a look at Imilka's CM9 ROM in the dev section. Running it right now and it is awesome.
the s pen apps for ICS such as quill and super note are good alternatives to s pen?
Im thinking about upgrading to ics

Most of the ICS ROMs are still WIP so if you are looking for a perfect ICS ROM for the N1 then you will have to wait. And please don't ask when that will be a perfect ICS ROM

You will have to try them out yourself to see which one you like. Each ROM has different features.
you can up CM9 4.0.4 BCM RC4.1U2.
i think it very well!
The last one I've try on my N1 was Everlov, and I can say it was very fine. But if you want a ICS which works like 2.3.7 the best you can do is install stock 2.3.7 and change the launcher to ICS launcher one.
HI..I've used to be fan of CM ROM's, but as you know Jelly Beans CM ROM's are still nightlies so I'm looking for stable alternative that also comes with stock launcher, lock-screen, theme ,,etc, (just like CM) without being bloated with apps that I might not use, with smoothness being my highest priority..what ROM do you think I should be using?
I'm using MIUI ROM for now, it's nice and smooth but it doesn't use anything from the original Android (caller, launcher, notification area, almost everything!), and that's why I didn't like, it besides it is somewhat bloated.
Thanx in advance..

you can use cm10 , because it's been a while it has been releasing nightlies and it's somehow stable.
but if you need a light rom you can use slim bean .it is really light and smooth
Light aokp v4 is really good.

Did u use cm10 as base? Btw that guide is weird, I think you can't just replace the framework folder
Ps: that n7000 isn't even an aosp rom

When you port a rom is important that both phones have the same resolution... In our case haves to be a phone
with a resolution of 400 x 800 inches

All Omni and CM roms / based roms on them are quite stable and can be used as daily drivers.
You can use Gmd spen control for some custom spen functions and use replace apps, but even making kitkat rom would be nonsense.
I'm currently on 4.3 with note 3 features and trust me, it's much slower than 4.1.2 (which worked like **** on note n7000). Besides the RAM usage... I have like 600-200mb of RAM free, so just forget about it.

For Kitkat roms choose either OMNI, Asylum naughties or SlimKAT.
as for sNote, use papyrus or write
