[Q] failed to mount /sdcard error - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi guys
this is my first post on this kickass site and i hope that someone can help me with this rather strange error :victory:
as the subject of topic says , i get this error whenever i boot my friends sgs into recovery as normal booting goes on loop forever.
this is the error i get in the recovery of stock I9000XXJVU:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--Copying media files...
E:failed to mount /sdcard (file exists)
E:copy_dbdata_media:can't mount /sdcard

what happened is this:
my friend had a sgs and i wanted to flash it with cyanogenmod 10 (android 4.1)
the stock firmware was 2.2 iirc.
i just rooted the stock and flashed the 4.1
it went ok but i saw the mounting error back then sometime that i rebooted the device with 4.1 on it but didn't get that error all the time and it would boot just fine.
then the error popuped more and more.
so i decided to flash stock 2.3.6 ,rooting it and finaly go back to 4.1.
after i flashed the device using I9000XXJVU it goes on loop.
recovery and downloading mode works.but the recovery give me that error i said above.
i guess a hardware issue but i don't know for sure
i'm lost here :silly:
help me plz
Thanks in advance

yep same error as before.
after flashing is done and it want to install the package,it get stock and give me that mounting error.
i just want to know if this problem is software or hardware

I also had this problem. Was on stock JVT with semaphore, partitions converted to ext4.
I decided to reboot my phone for no particular reason (was working reat) and when i powered it on kept boot looping without really getting past the samsung gt-i9000 white letters / black background screen.
CWM recovery said it was unable to mount any partition. External SD mounted fine, just nothing from the internel sd. No system, data, whatever. Got me thinking i may had my internal sd malfunctioning.
I just flashed it with odin and my stock branded operator rom (2.3.3) and done nothing more. No repartition. Working great. Was probably some ext4 error.
Before that i had been using cyanogen stable. Started giving FC like mad, so i flashed that stock JVT. On hindsight it may only had been the data partition that had run out of free space but i had no way of knowing when it happened and needed my phone running.
Reflashing got mine running again. Maybe try with Heimdall if odin's not working for you? Be sure to get a complete rom, with bootloaders and such. I'd suggest your operator's stock one. That way you can also send it back to samsung if it still doesn't work.

Found this post somewhere in the xda forum, it helped many people having the same problem as yours, hope it helps you !!!!

See problem 11 exact same problem described

thanks for the help guys
i tried everything that came to my mine and used this topic for my errors but still get errors
problem 11 and 12 are the ones i get flashing different roms
even tried a Rescue kit from here but no go...
why this is happening to me?

the failed to mount as i have come to understand is internal SD card failure you will have to give external SD card a try

Need help with SGS Looping Issues

Essentially I am at a lost of what to do.
I have tried everything to no prevail which leads to me to my defeat post here for a cry for help.
I DO NOT believe I have bricked it yet because I can still get into download mode and CVM but it doesn't look like this image: http://blog.laptopmag.com/wpress/wp.../Clockwork-Mod-Boot-Screen-e1279545586372.jpg
which is what I wanted. My original plan was to install a new ROM however, I do not have that option "install zip from sdcard". Therefore I had to install the Speedmod Kernel which is why
ANYWAYS moving on, I have tried Heimdall and Odin. I have been able to bootup the phone. HOWEVER it doesn't load a ROM because the Samsung Galaxy GT i9000 logo just keeps looping. Like I said, I am able to get into Download mode and CVM with the new menu. However, when I click anything the screen goes blank and nothing happens. I am at a complete loss of what to do. I have tried everything and I'm looking to advice.
Thanks and hope to hear from you all.
If I remember correctly the Speedmod Kernel uses the power button to select options and if you click the home button the screen will go black.
If this is not the issue then reverting to a stock Rom is probably your best option.
Find a stock Rom at: http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=3&t=1&o=1&m=GT-I9000&r=-1#modelsa (this link is for international version) just select your country. from the links just above Firmwares for GT-I9000 .
From here you want to get a pit 512 & make sure you have a firmware with 3 files (PDA, Phone, CSC) . From here there are plenty tutorials on how to install a stock ROM.
If your issue is not pressing the wrong button in speedmod let me know and I'll be happy to provide a basic list of what to do... or provide a link.
Thanks for the quick reply, I have done that. I have installed the best one I could find: I9000XXJVQ
I put the following 4 files in Odin:
s1_odin_20100512 (PIT)
CODE (PDA)
CSC (CSC)
MODEM (PHONE)
It brings me to Android system recover <3e>. From there I'm at a lost at what to do. I see when it says
Code:
Copying media file
E:failed to mount. /sdcard (File exists)
E:copy_dbdata_media:Can't mount /sdcard you storage not prepared yet. please use UI menu for format and reboot actions.
Media files copy failed.

From there I do not know what to do. When I click reboot system now; nothing occurs, the SGS image at the beginning still continues to loop. I'm looking at how to install the CVM so I can install my custom ROM.
I believe in the past I managed to do it (I installed the Dark Knight mod; but when it booted it said Encryption Unsuccessful and it only happened once. Was never able to get past that screen).
Anyways, that's the instruction from what I did above. What next (It's still looping at the SGS text at the startup).
EDIT:
From this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9336821&postcount=2
I then followed the install instructions for Root XXJVQ
The thing installed, it still has the issues. Opens the SGS start screen and doesn't go anywhere.
Further EDIT:
I then restarted the phone with following combination. (Power + Vol Up + Home). It then launched in CVM. I cleared partition and cache. I then installed the .zip ROM file (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1510940&highlight=cyanogen) from SD card. Rebooted system. It launches. Says "Encryption Unsuccessful" Please restart phone. I click the restart phone button. It restarts, I then get the android looking icon dead on the ground with it's chest open with a "Red triangle !" above it. Stuck from here.
Wish I could help further. In my experience I had to flash stock twice. Once with with pit file and repartition selected. Once without pit file and repartition unchecked.
From there to flash a custom ROM you need to get rid of 3e recovery by flashing something like CF-roof. Then once you have cf-root you can instal custom ROM.
Here is link for cf-root

Unfortunately that is the end of what I know still fairly new to all this. Hourly someone else can help.

HOw long did it take for the ROM to install?
Have you tried removing the battery, battery back in recovery and reflash the ROM.
ICSSGS 4.2 has a requirement to be flashed twice. (different rom but may be similar issue)
Once to update the bootloader which will result in a boot loop when coming from a Gingerbread ROM and again to fully install the rom
Lastly download the ROM again checking the MD5 checksum before flashing
I trust that this will assist
Does it matter if it is installed from the External SD or Internal SD because when I try to install from the internal SD it says "Can't mount /emmc/" so I'm only able to install from the external SD.
I tried installing it twice. I still get the encryption unsuccessful screen. I also re-downloaded the ROM.
OK ii think what you need to do now is try to get the phone to boot successfully into a stock rom for your region.
You mentioned in the first 2 or 3 posts that you did download from SamFirmware a stock rom.
It is probably a Odin flashable ROM
Is it a 3 file or 1 file?
Flash and then boot up the phone to be able to use it.
If successfull move on to the next step.
If you have been able to do this before i would suggest to try a different ROM.
I can personally recomend the ICSSGS 4.2 ROM following the instructions on the opening post for that ROM
If this works then try Dark Knight or other ROM
If this post has helped please use the Thanks Button

Unfortunately, it does not boot into stock ROM. It just loops.
I tried to do it over again. I used a different firmware: I9000XXJVU_I9000OXAJVU_OXA
So let's begin by retracing everything I did.
1) I essentially did this: http://www.androidegis.com/how-to/learn-how-to-install-xxjvu-firmware-on-galaxy-s-i9000/ (so it had the 4 files: pit, PDA, Code & CSC)
2) After I did that, I went into Odin and Put this as PDA "CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVU_2.3.6-v4.3-CWM3RFS" and clicked start
3) It then loaded but it keep looping. I had a feeling it didn't have a ROM installed. I erased data, cache and etc. Then I installed the Dark Knight 3 ROM. Install by external SD because I couldn't get the internal SD to work "Can't mount /emmc/" error.
4) I then reboot. I get the ROM loading screen. Then boom, stuck on Encryption Unsuccessful.
5) I put it back in recovery mode and repeat step 3 again.
6) I get the encryption error again.
Pretty much stuck at there.
so what you are saying is that no matter what firmware you flash it will boot loop?
I personally would not be trying a ICS ROM until you can boot a gingerbread rom successfully.
I have personally softbricked my phone once where i then was able to get into 3BR but was unable to boot due to a bad flash reflashing a gingerbread rom a couple of times with odin worked for me.
Try reflashing your JVU rom 2 times in a row.
I assume that you are able to get into 3BR if so what happens if you try to mount /system is there a error message?
When the phone is boot looping what is displayed on the screen?

from what you are doing it seems like you aren't doing what we say. Sorry if this is not the case.
1. Follow steps from your link above.
2. Attempt to reboot. Most likely you will be stuck in boot.
3. Flash again steps as link above. This time do not use pit and make sure repartition is unchecked.
4. Now boot. This time you should boot into stock.
5. Once in stock set USB debugging on and connect phone to PC and copy ROM you want to flash to internal sd card .
6. Flash CF-root with Odin.
8. Restart phone in to recovery and flash ROM on sd card.
Sorry to repeat this but none of what you say mentions flashing stock twice once with and once without repartition checked. You need to do this right after each other.
Sent from my GT-P7500 using xda premium
So your suggestion is to keep doing JVU flashing until I can get it to work? Do I just follow that instruction and do the flash once with the PIT file (and repartition) and do it again without the PIT file? If it still doesn't boot, what then?
The phone boot looping. RIGHT when you turn on the phone. It has that Samsung Galaxy I9000 screen. It just has that, goes black for like 2-3 seconds then resets itself over and over again.
There is no issue with mount /system. I believe when I try to mount /emmc, there is an error. This is important because this is what lets me access the internal SD.

I do step number 3, but step number 4 doesn't happen; I tried what you just said and it won't boot into the stock. It just goes into Android system recovery <3e> and the copying media files fails (both times I flash it). Just an error, still can reboot system and etc but I don't think anything happens.
This error on the second flash is
Code:

Click Reboot Now is <3e>. Nothing happens, it boots up. Shows the first Samsung Galaxy S screen, does nothing. About to boot stock ROM but doesn't. Loops it back to the SGS screen once more. Then it just shuts off and a picture of a battery shows up?
If you are flashing through Odin twice all three files 1st time with pit and repartition checked, second time without pit and repartition unchecked and still have issues then I would say problem may be with phone but I am new to this myself. Only commenting and given suggestions as I had similar issues which I resolved with steps I mentioned.
Options would be to download another stock ROM and do a checksum to ensure it is fine, download a different version of Odin (i use odin 1.85) and a new 512 pit file, reinstall the drivers for the phone, try it all on a different PC. Also make sure kies is not running when you do this (kill any background services.for kies) and try disable your antivirus on your PC. Also remove external as card and Sim.
If these suggestions don't help try search google for those errors you are getting. That's what I have done and managed to sort every issue so far.

Ok lots of reading in past posts here's what I would do and it works everytime. Google links to xxjvu firmware and and use those three files plus pit 512 repartition checkedand flash. Then to root your phone simply go to darky website. But before you do any of that tell me what rom you were on before you flashed new kernel and what exactly were you trying to accomplish out of your phone. ie.end result and who your service provider is. If you pm me I can walk you through it no problem.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk
It was 2.3.3 I believe before I did it.
My goal is to put a nice custom ROM (looking towards Dark Knight 3).
I have no idea what the specific darky rom I need.
Service provider was Virgin Canada.
Been thinking. Have you tried using heimdal. Try search for a tutorial that flashes a stock ROM with heimdal.
Sent from my GT-P7500 using xda premium
What did you have before the problems? Was it a lagfixed rom with ext4 partitions?
I've had strange problems when I tried to flash stuff with a lagfix, try to flash your stock base, and then flash a kernel that supports ext4. See if it boots up. If it does, disable lagfix and then change to whatever you want

Cannot install any ROM

My Girlfriend asked me to update her SGS, so I said, why not trying a costum ROM. She agreed...
So is first installed CWM with hardcore's kernel with the ClockworkMod Recovery and the Heimdall Suite.
I made a backup of her data and installed CM7.
But she did not like it and asked me to recover her old system.
So I opened CWM and choose the backup. Then in the beginning of the progress the phone suddenly rebooted and stuck at the fist samsung Logo...
So I tried to install CM7 again.
"Error in CM7.....zip" (Status 7)
I downloaded it again and moved the new file to the SD. Same Problem.
I tried another ROM.
"Cannot mount \system"
I did hardcore's kernel with the ClockworkMod Recovery and the Heimdall Suite again. Same Problem
I formated the whole file system (and deleted the backup by misstake)
Same Problem...
I read that CM7 changes the partition structure, maybe thats the problem?
I read about Odin but of course, as I used the guide above I did not wrote don the IMEI etc of the SGS.
My GF is going to kill me, this is serious
Any suggestions?
I tried something different with using odin
I tried to install an original ROM but also gut errors from the filesystem.
When rebooting the logo shows up and the animation starts but it loops and never end.
"Cant mount /dbdata your storage not prepared yet. Please use UI menu for format and reboot options"
And bootloader (3e) showing up, when i try to do something it crashes and when trying to reboot BSOD....
Even when I try to start the bootloader alone
cannot mount /dbdata (invalid argument)
faild to mount /dbdata (File exsists)
Cant acess to /system/csc/ELP/system/
Ok then I tried to check the "Re-Partition" Box but Odin is not starting the process if its checked...
Try flashing firmware from here. Most of them contain bootloaders. And repartition with 512 pit.

I made it to reinstall Cyanogenmod. Dont know how it exactly worked, but it did.
So the first thing I want to do is to backup those EFS-Files.
My problem is that I dont have the possibility to install ROMS because (like at the very first installation) The Progressbar of the CWM Installer stops after a few seconds an the device reboots without having anything installed.
But, as I have CM7 installed, I have SU. so maybe there are other possibilites to backup those important files? Just copy the directory?
I had nerves and made it to install MIUI. It has all the google apps, its shiny and very girl-like.
I realy pray she likes it.
Now, 8 hours later I want to let you know I will not study tomorrow morning. Im just going to BED !!!
hhhhhhhhhhhhh dont do it again
Try to install an official rom with 3 files using odin then re-install the old rom

Help! Meday!! Phone Reboots into cwm

Hi All,
I am in desperate need of help.
I have a nexus s. rooted, with cyanogenmod kernel and slimbean rom.
My friend has a galaxy s1 that had unrooted froyo.
A friend of his rooted it, and put gingerbread on it. I wanted to put slimbean on it for him.
I did so.
Except, that his mobile network wouldnt connect.
I googled, and found that this could be because the kernel is not compatible with the rom.
So I downloaded cyanogenmod kernel and flashed.
But this didnt work, because I think the download was corrupted or something.
I tried to re boot into clockwork, but it just got stock on the first loading screen.
Since then I have tried everything and have been googling for hours... I dont know what to do. I have tried so many different things.
Please can some guru help me figure out what to do?
My friend is pissed as hell at me, I told him it will be painless quick and easy. Thats how it was for me and i assumed same for him.
PLEASE!! I need HELP!! :'(
Edit: I reflashed semaphore and it now goes into cwm. But now when I flash the rom and reboot it, it just reboots automatically into cwm again. Anyone know where to go from here?
Thanks in advance,

It appears to be a bootloop. That means flashing messed with boot partition and you have to reflash boot. Is this phone i9000 or i9001?
Search for similar topics like: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1590747
If you can get to CWM or download mode nothing bad happend - you can repair everything, however it would be wise if you had backup of previous, working ROM
Calm down its fixable first you try to fix it without Odin by
- flashing slim bean again don't forget full wipe flash i9000.zip twice the first time it will reboot half way through at least it did for me
-then pull out the battery and boot into cwm
- flash both slim bean files
- this should get the phone starting again after that to get network working flash this file in cwm http://www.mediafire.com/?fbgxblhbip7bkuv it should get network running credit goes to pwneman for that
Let me know how it goes

Try to format your sdcard in fat32 filesystem (through Windows/CWM or any other various ways if this won't work)
Also try other sdcard...
If formatting card doesn't fix the problem try to reflash CWM via Odin in Download mode.
ok i did a hard reset and left batt out for a good few min and got the sdcard back again.
i followed the steps u said latrop and it didnt fix it... still booted back into cwm...
since i now have the sdcard back i am making a backup zip file of it just in case lol

Wait, before you odin flash:
Let me get this straight, your rom .zip is on your external sd card? it has to be in your internal sd card.
From the recovery main menu, go to mounts & storage. From there, plug in your phone to your computer and select "Mount internal USB storage."
You'll be able to then copy the rom file into your internal sd card. While you're at it, I'd recommend X-Bean, as it's currently faster and more stable than SlimBean. Then, unmount your phone and return to the recovery menu and select install zip and choose the file you've just copied.
Please let me know how it goes.
@kngroo
thats what i did.. ive flashed tons of roms and kernels before on my nexus s...
its this galaxy s 1 that isnt working for some reason... it was meant to be a quick and painless proceedure which has turned into a nightmare
gonna probably have to format the sdcard now :*(
Hi All,
I wanna give a SERIOUS thank you to latrop.
This guy is a freaking legend. He just sat with me for almost 2 hours helping me sort out the phone. We did almost everything you can think of and then some... But ultimately it was latrops great experience and knowledge that helped save my ass here...
Phone is running full on slimbean rom with great reception etc.
Latrop... you are a legend!!!
Just wipe/factory reset and wipe cache
its work for me and maybe it would work with you too

[Q] Problem flashing with odin

Hi guys, i ran across a very annoying problem today.
I failed to flash the latest version of cm10 on my i9000 and soft- ricked my device.
I thought flashing a stock rom is a good idea, but after flashing successfully i get an error, because the partitions are no longer rfs format,
they are ext4.
What should i do now, i dont have any roms on my device to flash them via cwm.
I was wondering if there is any way of changing the partitions back to rfs is possible via odin,
Or if i can flash a rom that supports ext4 via odin instead of cwm.
Thanks in advance.
Sorry for not being specific
I did not mention the type of error.
It shows me: cannot mount partition;
This error appears several times coloured in red.
At first i ignored it but get into a bootloop where the galaxy s boot animation starts over and over and over....
The boot sound its played only the first time if that helps you with something.

In CWM, use usb mounts and storage to copy the ROM you initially used to convert your partition to ext 4, to get it back

[Q] HELP!!! Cappy Dead Or Alive?? any hope??

i have been running slim bean latest till date for some time now on my Captivate. few days back in the morning while i was playing music, my phone freezed for about 30 seconds and suddenly restarted. the problem is that the phone cant even boot. once it loads the kernel image and enters the bootanimation for about 10 seconds, it will keep rebooting till infinity. i left the phone for hours and flashed another Jb rom through the external sd card. after about 4 hours, the phone freezed and restarted with the same circling restart again. i left it for hours longer than before and succeeded in flashing ics rom. this time around, the phone freezed and restarted as usual in 1 hr. i tried to go back to stock gb which i did with heimdall one click package. after flashing the phone rebooted in recovery with errors that cant mount sd card and so on. i flashed an ics kernel luckily for me i was able to access the sd card this time around and flashed an ics rom. within 10nmins the phone freezed and restarted as usual. from here was the last i got progress with this phone. if i succeed in getting into recovery, i will get an error cant mount sd card likewise cant mount ext sd card. the condition of my phone now is that it never enters recovery no matter what i flash all it does, is restart in 2 - 3 secs whether in recovery or not. please what is the solution to this problem. is the chip responsible for mounting sd cards in the phone's main board dead or alive? because each time i manage to see sd card again, the content is always untouched.

Getting in download mode and flashing KK4 through Odin is your best bet atm. Once that's done, keep it that way (only get the apps you need) and see if it reboots again. If so, it is most likely a hardware issue but I'm thinking it isn't so far.
I would also suggest to redownload the ROMs and kernel you want to use and delete the hold ones.
If everything goes well with KK4, move up to a custom ROM (I'm sure you know the drill). But once again, only install the apps you really need (fresh install instead of restoring). A bit of a slow process but better be safe than sorry.

Thanks for replying but KK4 is the exact stock rom i flashed, two different types of it to be precise. it wont boot aswell as it restarts just like any other and says sd error in its recovery.

Do you use a external SD?
Usually flashing stock KK4 (through heimdall of Odin) will completely wipe any errors that isn't hardware related.
Just to be clear, KK4 flashes just fine but on the auto-reboot, it goes directly into recovery and gives you that error? If so, are you able to factory reset once you're in recovery?
Usually, after flashing KK4, the phone will fully start so something isn't flashing right. Also, have you tried flashing KK4 with the bootloaders?

i did exactly that.that is flashing the KK4 rom through heimdall as my cappy refused to be detected by odin since i flashed heimdall. it flashed ust fine and booted to recovery
this is the error i got

this is the error i got on the recovery after flashing and it booted into recovery on its own. i have an external sd card. i also copied a custom rom to my external sd card and flashed an ICS recovery that enables intallation of zip files from external sd card. but when i succed in booting into recovery with it, it will give me error can't mount sd card likewise error cant mount external sd card. this is as far i can go
Did u ever see the "Encryption Unsuccessful" screen ? That's what ur problem sounds like. There r two threads in the Dev forum about that subject.

I believe I mentionned this before but Odin won't work on the same USB port Heimdall installs it's drivers on. You need to use a different port for both. Also, on a PC, I would highly suggest using the ports in the back for Odin (somehow they always seem to work better).

If you're able to mount through recovery, put the ROMs and kernel you want to flash on your internal SD (16gb). I'm not so sure why it won't read your external but it might be what's causing the errors. So once you moved those (if you're able to mount of course), turn off your phone, remove your external SD and give it another try. Kinda a shot in the dark but we're running short on options here.

I though about that too but flashing KK4 (through Odin or Heimdall) should take care of it and atleast let him boot on stock. I guess it is worth a try tho!
wow. u wont believe this. after sending my last message, i flashed KK4 again just for luck, i got the error as usual. i now did a factory reset, got an error though and rebooted the system. to my greatest surprise and for the first time, it booted to stock and started up without problem. i did a full format of the hard drive immediately as it was almost full. now i've been running the phone for 5 hrs now. and has not experienced any freeze so far.
as for the encryption unsuccessful, YES i've seen it twice. i will read on that and see what might have happened. thanks guys.

Perhaps you can re-download the kernel. I believe it has a specific root version.

Yep KK4 Corn Kernel has the ability to give u Root through its avanced menu in the its cwm recovery. Or [Utility] KK4 Easy Root by Red_81 in the Dev forum works as well.
