Essentially I am at a lost of what to do.
I have tried everything to no prevail which leads to me to my defeat post here for a cry for help.
I DO NOT believe I have bricked it yet because I can still get into download mode and CVM but it doesn't look like this image: http://blog.laptopmag.com/wpress/wp.../Clockwork-Mod-Boot-Screen-e1279545586372.jpg
which is what I wanted. My original plan was to install a new ROM however, I do not have that option "install zip from sdcard". Therefore I had to install the Speedmod Kernel which is why
ANYWAYS moving on, I have tried Heimdall and Odin. I have been able to bootup the phone. HOWEVER it doesn't load a ROM because the Samsung Galaxy GT i9000 logo just keeps looping. Like I said, I am able to get into Download mode and CVM with the new menu. However, when I click anything the screen goes blank and nothing happens. I am at a complete loss of what to do. I have tried everything and I'm looking to advice.
Thanks and hope to hear from you all.
If I remember correctly the Speedmod Kernel uses the power button to select options and if you click the home button the screen will go black.
If this is not the issue then reverting to a stock Rom is probably your best option.
Find a stock Rom at: http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=3&t=1&o=1&m=GT-I9000&r=-1#modelsa (this link is for international version) just select your country. from the links just above Firmwares for GT-I9000 .
From here you want to get a pit 512 & make sure you have a firmware with 3 files (PDA, Phone, CSC) . From here there are plenty tutorials on how to install a stock ROM.
If your issue is not pressing the wrong button in speedmod let me know and I'll be happy to provide a basic list of what to do... or provide a link.
Thanks for the quick reply, I have done that. I have installed the best one I could find: I9000XXJVQ
I put the following 4 files in Odin:
s1_odin_20100512 (PIT)
CODE (PDA)
CSC (CSC)
MODEM (PHONE)
It brings me to Android system recover <3e>. From there I'm at a lost at what to do. I see when it says
Code:
Copying media file
E:failed to mount. /sdcard (File exists)
E:copy_dbdata_media:Can't mount /sdcard you storage not prepared yet. please use UI menu for format and reboot actions.
Media files copy failed.

From there I do not know what to do. When I click reboot system now; nothing occurs, the SGS image at the beginning still continues to loop. I'm looking at how to install the CVM so I can install my custom ROM.
I believe in the past I managed to do it (I installed the Dark Knight mod; but when it booted it said Encryption Unsuccessful and it only happened once. Was never able to get past that screen).
Anyways, that's the instruction from what I did above. What next (It's still looping at the SGS text at the startup).
EDIT:
From this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9336821&postcount=2
I then followed the install instructions for Root XXJVQ
The thing installed, it still has the issues. Opens the SGS start screen and doesn't go anywhere.
Further EDIT:
I then restarted the phone with following combination. (Power + Vol Up + Home). It then launched in CVM. I cleared partition and cache. I then installed the .zip ROM file (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1510940&highlight=cyanogen) from SD card. Rebooted system. It launches. Says "Encryption Unsuccessful" Please restart phone. I click the restart phone button. It restarts, I then get the android looking icon dead on the ground with it's chest open with a "Red triangle !" above it. Stuck from here.
Wish I could help further. In my experience I had to flash stock twice. Once with with pit file and repartition selected. Once without pit file and repartition unchecked.
From there to flash a custom ROM you need to get rid of 3e recovery by flashing something like CF-roof. Then once you have cf-root you can instal custom ROM.
Here is link for cf-root

I did the above. It boots into CVM. I install the custom ROM. It counts down Waiting for SD Card to mount (20s, 19s, 18s....). Then it just restarts and keeps looping like that. Suggestions?
Unfortunately that is the end of what I know still fairly new to all this. Hourly someone else can help.

HOw long did it take for the ROM to install?
Have you tried removing the battery, battery back in recovery and reflash the ROM.
ICSSGS 4.2 has a requirement to be flashed twice. (different rom but may be similar issue)
Once to update the bootloader which will result in a boot loop when coming from a Gingerbread ROM and again to fully install the rom
Lastly download the ROM again checking the MD5 checksum before flashing
I trust that this will assist
Does it matter if it is installed from the External SD or Internal SD because when I try to install from the internal SD it says "Can't mount /emmc/" so I'm only able to install from the external SD.
I tried installing it twice. I still get the encryption unsuccessful screen. I also re-downloaded the ROM.
OK ii think what you need to do now is try to get the phone to boot successfully into a stock rom for your region.
You mentioned in the first 2 or 3 posts that you did download from SamFirmware a stock rom.
It is probably a Odin flashable ROM
Is it a 3 file or 1 file?
Flash and then boot up the phone to be able to use it.
If successfull move on to the next step.
If you have been able to do this before i would suggest to try a different ROM.
I can personally recomend the ICSSGS 4.2 ROM following the instructions on the opening post for that ROM
If this works then try Dark Knight or other ROM
If this post has helped please use the Thanks Button

Unfortunately, it does not boot into stock ROM. It just loops.
I tried to do it over again. I used a different firmware: I9000XXJVU_I9000OXAJVU_OXA
So let's begin by retracing everything I did.
1) I essentially did this: http://www.androidegis.com/how-to/learn-how-to-install-xxjvu-firmware-on-galaxy-s-i9000/ (so it had the 4 files: pit, PDA, Code & CSC)
2) After I did that, I went into Odin and Put this as PDA "CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVU_2.3.6-v4.3-CWM3RFS" and clicked start
3) It then loaded but it keep looping. I had a feeling it didn't have a ROM installed. I erased data, cache and etc. Then I installed the Dark Knight 3 ROM. Install by external SD because I couldn't get the internal SD to work "Can't mount /emmc/" error.
4) I then reboot. I get the ROM loading screen. Then boom, stuck on Encryption Unsuccessful.
5) I put it back in recovery mode and repeat step 3 again.
6) I get the encryption error again.
Pretty much stuck at there.
so what you are saying is that no matter what firmware you flash it will boot loop?
I personally would not be trying a ICS ROM until you can boot a gingerbread rom successfully.
I have personally softbricked my phone once where i then was able to get into 3BR but was unable to boot due to a bad flash reflashing a gingerbread rom a couple of times with odin worked for me.
Try reflashing your JVU rom 2 times in a row.
I assume that you are able to get into 3BR if so what happens if you try to mount /system is there a error message?
When the phone is boot looping what is displayed on the screen?

from what you are doing it seems like you aren't doing what we say. Sorry if this is not the case.
1. Follow steps from your link above.
2. Attempt to reboot. Most likely you will be stuck in boot.
3. Flash again steps as link above. This time do not use pit and make sure repartition is unchecked.
4. Now boot. This time you should boot into stock.
5. Once in stock set USB debugging on and connect phone to PC and copy ROM you want to flash to internal sd card .
6. Flash CF-root with Odin.
8. Restart phone in to recovery and flash ROM on sd card.
Sorry to repeat this but none of what you say mentions flashing stock twice once with and once without repartition checked. You need to do this right after each other.

So your suggestion is to keep doing JVU flashing until I can get it to work? Do I just follow that instruction and do the flash once with the PIT file (and repartition) and do it again without the PIT file? If it still doesn't boot, what then?
The phone boot looping. RIGHT when you turn on the phone. It has that Samsung Galaxy I9000 screen. It just has that, goes black for like 2-3 seconds then resets itself over and over again.
There is no issue with mount /system. I believe when I try to mount /emmc, there is an error. This is important because this is what lets me access the internal SD.

It just goes into Android system recovery <3e> and the copying media files fails (both times I flash it). Just an error, still can reboot system and etc but I don't think anything happens.
This error on the second flash is

Click Reboot Now is <3e>. Nothing happens, it boots up. Shows the first Samsung Galaxy S screen, does nothing. About to boot stock ROM but doesn't. Loops it back to the SGS screen once more. Then it just shuts off and a picture of a battery shows up?
If you are flashing through Odin twice all three files 1st time with pit and repartition checked, second time without pit and repartition unchecked and still have issues then I would say problem may be with phone but I am new to this myself. Only commenting and given suggestions as I had similar issues which I resolved with steps I mentioned.
Options would be to download another stock ROM and do a checksum to ensure it is fine, download a different version of Odin (i use odin 1.85) and a new 512 pit file, reinstall the drivers for the phone, try it all on a different PC. Also make sure kies is not running when you do this (kill any background services.for kies) and try disable your antivirus on your PC. Also remove external as card and Sim.
If these suggestions don't help try search google for those errors you are getting. That's what I have done and managed to sort every issue so far.

Ok lots of reading in past posts here's what I would do and it works everytime. Google links to xxjvu firmware and and use those three files plus pit 512 repartition checkedand flash. Then to root your phone simply go to darky website. But before you do any of that tell me what rom you were on before you flashed new kernel and what exactly were you trying to accomplish out of your phone. ie.end result and who your service provider is. If you pm me I can walk you through it no problem.

It was 2.3.3 I believe before I did it.
My goal is to put a nice custom ROM (looking towards Dark Knight 3).
I have no idea what the specific darky rom I need.
Service provider was Virgin Canada.
Been thinking. Have you tried using heimdal. Try search for a tutorial that flashes a stock ROM with heimdal.

What did you have before the problems? Was it a lagfixed rom with ext4 partitions?
I've had strange problems when I tried to flash stuff with a lagfix, try to flash your stock base, and then flash a kernel that supports ext4. See if it boots up. If it does, disable lagfix and then change to whatever you want

EDIT: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=759910
this is the issue, corrupted sdcard.
I have to send it in for repair
Hi I moved from JPC to JM6 recently.,
today I hung up after a call then my phone's screen when blank.
Although my two buttons were lighted, my whole screen went complete blank.
I came home to flash it with different ROMS.
always repartitioned with proper pit file (512)
recovery mode to factory reset.
but no matter which rom I try,
my phone would always go blank screen right after the boot logo.
could anyone please help me with this?
AM I experiencing same problem as http://ip208-100-42-21.static.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7541128 ?
the guy resolved the problem by flashing different FW but i tried at least 5 different FW.
with or with out pit partition
in Samsung recovery mode 3E
I can't format my SD card and it gives me can't mount error
(galaxy I9000M)
just a suggestion, can you try using leshak's update.zip where he downgraded the recovery 3e to 2e? looks and try reformating again?
double post. apologies.
I can't upload update.zip as i can't put my phone into mass storage mode.
matter of fact, my phone goes blank after galaxy S bootlogo
Make sure youre using the correct pit files for each firmware and try both froyo and eclair firmwares.
Also, remove microsd and sim card when you flash.
And tick "repartition" in odin each time.
I had the same issue and eventually it just worked. In 95% confident you can fix it

I spent all day doing the above.
it's corrupted internal SDcard issue.
I have Paul's (modaco) JP3 ROM with clockworkmod built in which allows me to go to
clockwork recovery right after the flash
format sdcard is there but due to the permission issue, I can't format my SDcard
I can get into ADB by SGS but i have no access to /sdcard "permission denied"

I will continue my story on this thread,

for future reference
after 2wks and half I got my phone back.
they ended up replacing the motherboard of the phone.
I have an i9000m with 2.1 and voodoo. I decided to upgrade to the JK3 firmware today when this happened. I backed up data, did a factory reset, removed the sim and flashed JK3 through Odin. Booted up fine, but when I try to run any app it force-closed.
So i powered down and tried to flash back to JH2. Got into Download Mode and flashed it, upon reboot i got this error
E:Cant mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1
(no such file or directory}
e:copy_dbdata_media:Cant mount SDCARD:
copy default media content failed
Tried a flash to JG8 and still the same thing. If I make it boot it goes to the Galaxy S animation and just hangs. The touch sensitive buttons light up, nothing on the screen.
I can still get into Download mode, but recovery mode gives me this
update media, please wait
E:Cant mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1
(IO Error)
e:copy_dbdata_media:Cant mount SDCARD:
copy default media content failed
Advice? Internal SD dead?

Hi. First question is... Did you disable the voodo lagfix before you flashed? This is a MUST when flashing and you diddnt mention it in your post.
The bad news is I believe that your internal SD card is toast and it will need to be sent in for repair. Sorry to be the bearrer of bad news...
Thanks for the reply!
Yea I disabled voodoo but I forgot to unroot it. I'm not sure if thats necessary.
I was beginning to think so. I'll take it back then
well the next best thing to try is to flash back to a stock ROM like JH2 and see if you are able to revive the internal SD
if not, then it's a visit to a Bell Store for repairs
Tried both JH2 and JG8, no revival so far.
Repairs it is i guess.
Btw, your sig exactly describes my SGS before I tried flashing JK3 on it, well besides the fact that i used voodoo! I guess I'd advise you to not flash it right now
I don't understand why so many seem to have issues with JK3. I find it to be a great ROM that has better performance than JH2. Many seem to have issues right after flashing JK3 so I'm thinking it has something to do with with how it's being flashed.
I haven't had any issues flashing and I don't know if it's because of the process I use or what. I've been using Odin 1.7 and never re-partition.
This is how I do it:
- unroot phone
- remove external SD and SIM
- wipe/factory reset
- flash with Odin, no pit, only 'auto reboot' checked
- fully boot up phone then shut down
- wipe/factory reset again
- insert external SD and SIM
- set the phone back up like i would a new device
I like to have my phone completely back to stock before flashing another ROM, especially if it's an upgrade from a previous ROM. I haven't had any problems from flashing but maybe I've just been lucky

Hey...looks like you use the I9000m version. I have some questions-
1.Have you tried flashing back to stock from darky's ROM or any other ROM?
2.If yes could you tell me if it's the above procedure you used or anything more?
3.Also, did you unroot your phone when on CF Root? How did you do it? (oneclick?)
Normally I wouldn't post a thread, searching is quicker & requires less hanging around...but I am at my wits end now!
I am trying to install a new ROM on my phone but everything I try causes me issues.
I have got to the stage where I am trying to install a ROM (Darkyys). I have downloaded the ROM and put it into my internal SD card, home directory.
I have installed ROM manager, flashed clockworkMOD Recovery, and have restarted into recovery mode from that.
Now, the recovery mode is blue writing (if that helps).
I have cleared everything & go down to ''apply sdcard:update.zip'' and I get an error message which says:
'' E:signature verification failed. Installation aborted.''
Now, I have googled every tutorial, every error message and nothing has brought details up on how I get out of this loop.
Can anyone shed any light on it?
Cheers guys
edit: The recovery mode is 3e, and has - For BML - on it, if it helps?
the blue writing,, i think that is stock recovery mode, u need to get clockworkMod you will have to download that and flash it through recovery using the process you have already been trying for darkys rom..
when you have clockwork mod, your selecting the wrong thing. you wanna select update from sd card. then select chooze zip from sd card. then there you will see darkys rom (looks something like Darkyys vXX-wipe version.....zip)
Thanks for the post mate, the only options I have are;
reboot system now
apply sdcard:update.zip
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
format internal SD-card
Which is what's throwing me off currently!
yes get yourself clockworkMod from here: http://www.multiupload.com/5CUIK88JM0
once downloaded put it on your sd card (internal) then apply sdcard:update.zip ( you may need to do this more than once) when its done the recovery menu will be different. than you can flash darkyys ROM
When I open ROm Manager, the top link says 'Flash ClockworkMod Recovery', I select this first and it seems to install it fine. Below it ssays:
Current Recovery: ClockworkMod 2.5.1.1
Latest Recovery: ClockworkMod 2.5.1.1
Selecting the option below to 'Reboot into recovery' just brings me back tot he blue writing above!
edit: Ill try that now, thanks mate!
Thanks mate, though I am now getting the error message:
E: Failed to verify whole-file signature
E: signature verification failed
Installation Aborted.
Damn
thats weird.. what version of darkys rom are you trying to flash, you could try flashing speedMod kernel thru ODIN, takes 10 seconds and will remove standard recovery and replace with clockworkMod. then you can flash any rom you want. and even option to root/unroot.. built in lagfix and tweaks. very good kernel im running it now.
The latest version...8.0. I cant even get to the stage of the flashing the ROM though, the recovery mode is just not playing ball.
I have spent all evening trying to sort this, I don't suppose you could give me a brief run down on ODIN could you? Searching brings up everything under the sun!
edit: I am downloading it now.
your downloading what ?
I have downloaded ODIN, but am struggling to find instructions on it. I can gather it is another form of installing a ROM onto the phone, but you need to do so in the download mode?
edit: downloaded ODIN, have the .pit file and the .tar file in a separate folder, how do I flash the ROM...is that done using ODIN? Sorry for the questions, struggling to find usable instructions that explain the steps properly.
http://touristinparadise.blogspot.com/2010/11/samsung-galaxy-s-how-to-install.html
Thats step by step guide to flashing a kernel.. that will put CWM as default recovery.. you dont have to keep the kernel as darkys 8.0 has its own built in voodoo kernel which is also really good.
but flash the kernel in the link above first ^^^ as that will allow you to flash anything you want thru CWM then you shudnt need to use ODIN again really..
Cwm only works on 2e recovery not 3e. Download cf root for your firmware and flash it with odin. Put the cf root file in the pda section and do nothing else. Put phone in download mode, connect to computer and hit start on odin. Done. You will have 2e recovery and can now flash darkys or other.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
thats another way of doing it yes. thanks for pointing that out sxi200
cf-root attached,
I ran ODIN & followed those instructions to the letter. My phone has been sat there for 10mins now and ODIN hasn't changed off 'SetupConnection'.
How long does this take, is it normal? Thanks again for your help!
I take that file, put it in ODIN folder & select it instead of the speedmode Kernal?
are you trying to flash darkys WIPE version or NO WIPE version ?? flashing a kernel only takes ten seconds.. does it not say pass in the top box on ODIN ??

yes u have to extract it first to get the .tar file
Some progress, I have got the 2e recovery mode now. I went to apply sdcard:update.zip, hoping to change the recovery mode over to CWM...but it only looped back to where it was before...the 2e recovery screen with apply sd card, reboot, and wipe data & cache being displayed.
Tried it for a second time & I am now in the CWM recovery mode, with the green lettering. Only issue now is I can't select (using home button) any of the options, i can scroll up and down though!
edit: power button does select, not home...seems to be doing something now! Will report back shortly!
haha that got me first time i installed CWM if you flash ROM it can take a while to boot, sometimes on my phone upto 15-20mins so dont panic if your phone doesnt respond, just keep your eye on the writing on CWM once it says update complete / successful all is good.. it will boot eventually.
So I updated the MIUI on my Cappy from whatever I had before to 2.3.30 that is GB 2.3.7 from this location:
http://miuiandroid.com/community/threads/archived-miui-versions-captivate-gb.16558/
I didnt care for it so I downloaded SlimICS. I downloaded the base and the cappy essentials. Put them both on my internal sd. I factory reset, wiped data, cache and system and dalvic, just as i do for every phone i work on. I ran the SlimICS base and now it keeps rebooting and going back into recovery and doing this:
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Installing update...
Slim ICS
Once Slim ICS pops up, it reboots and does it all over. I can yank the battery and manually go into recovery, but if i try to boot it up normal, it goes back into the loop. I am on CWM 5.0.2.7 also.
So what did i miss?
GB bootloaders most likely missing - flash 'em using Heimdall. And SlimICS doesn't have modem. So. Flash my ROM for a change may be.
Sounds like you just need to flash again. You have to do that when you are going from GB to ICS, and vice versa I believe.
And you flashed the base and the cappy essentials right? Not just the base

I never could get that far because it was the base that I started to install and it got bootlooped on, everytime it restarted, it went back into recovery and started to run the base again, and repeated boot loop. I read somewhere that teamhacksung's rom would get me over the GB to ICS bridge. This one here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1363760
It did the bootloop to, but when i yanked the battery and went back in and installed it a 2nd time, it didnt restart and installed correctly. After that I installed SlimICS. But I dont like it as much as i thought i would and now when i try to reinstall teamhacksung ROM, it errors out during the beggining of the installation. The MD5 is still fine. I dont think it likes the version of CWM recovery that SlimICS installed. I know CWMR went to an older version when i went from teamhacksung to SlimICS.
Flash glitch kernel first. Also, don't use the builds from that thread, it is old. Just flash the latest CM9 nightly

Also stuck in bootloop reverting to Gingerbread
I am also stuck in boot loop after attempting to restore back into Gingerbread.
Here's how I got in this mess: I had been running Gingerbread on my Captivate for several months (rooted). I decided it was time to try upgrading to Jelly Bean (cm9 version). I installed ClockworkMod Recovery and that appeared to be working, so I made a NANDroid and proceeded to install CyanogenMod on my phone.
It booted OK, but I didn't like it and figured I'd just revert by restoring my NANDroid. Only thing is, it didn't restore correctly and my phone was stuck at the initial AT&T "bars" screen.
So I attempted to reboot in recovery and restore my latest update.zip. This did not seem to help at all. My phone would just boot to the AT&T screen and be stuck there. I checked to see adb was reachable behind the scenes but it wasn't.
After that I loaded Odin 1.85, downloaded a copy of the stock Captivate ROM, unzipped it and loaded it to my ROM (using the method described in this link I'm not allowed to show you because I'm a new user), more or less.
Odin said it was successful, but the phone is now still stuck in a boot loop. The ClockworkMod Recovery options are gone from the recovery menu. Now it looks like my stock recovery menu. There are some diagnostics on the recovery screen:

E: failed to mount /dbdata (Invalid argument)
E: copy_dbdata_media: Can't mont /dbdata

the bold text indicating errors appears in orange.
I tried "wipe data/factory reset" and "wipe cache partition" and rebooting. This had no apparent effect. The Captivate still continues to loop on reboot.
What next? It seems like it's missing something it needs to boot that's not in the standard Gingerbread Captivate image I downloaded with Odin. What else do I need to do? Keep in mind that right now the only way I can get files onto the phone is Odin (or similar) via the USB port. The phone never gets booted enough to get to it with adb, let alone mounting as a drive on my computer.
Thanks

While searching threw all this mess on this site and various other :
I did stumble on something that might help u get your cwm
mode Look up Captivate Q&A the scroll to T, Russel thread has file needed to get your cwm mode working using rageagaistcage method.
Odin has multi file upload for stock alone check to make sure you selected right one . then just reflash should be good
mine i examine really thoroughly and figure out i try to jump to high .
i had stock then firefly then darkfire which is based off i900 <> Cappy rom bad <>idea on my part i try to jump to paranoid rom from darkfire '
don't think files were save to SD internal card - download section instead so firmware lost track of it self .
reviewing errors made on my part order 2 jig for my 2 cappys
my plan use jig get into download flash back to stock using odin one click using kies flash to froyo and stick with it for another six months
while reading everything i need to know about flashing that high up , besides that rom will become more stable less bugs and it will give me
time to see what errors occurs with this phone model on that rom last time i check there was only 7 posted user using it
again i was trying to flash paranoid rom for Samsung captivate SGH_I897'' I hope you get your issue resolved.
If u try one click unbrick and on win xp uninstall kies the drivers will not work together log in to administrator account <> just Google it if not on welcome screen there a few ways to get into that account,, but that did work for me on my cappy . let me know how u make out. ??

HG_User,
U can't go back to GB (or froyo/eclair) from CM, MIUI, ICS, JB, AOSP etc., etc. without using Odin or Heimdall---because of the different partitions used---Stock firmware is bml/rfs and all the AOSP etc etc are mtd/yaffs(2).
And u can only restore a backup when u r back running the base rom where u made the back up.
Use this...Stock i897ucKK4 GB 2.3.5 with or without bootloaders... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18370912
This kk4 should get u going. Then u can use Odin to flash Corn Kernel to get a cwm back...

... one step on the way: Back to Eclair
thanks for the advice. Ultimately, I decided I should use Odin 3 1-click to revert back to original (2.1 Eclair) firmware that I found on the first post of thread titled
[STOCK ROM] Odin3 One-Click Downloader and Drivers CAPTIVATE ONLY
This is a huge step forward because it makes my phone work, but it's also a step back in time to the early Eclair days.
Now my next step is to upgrade back to Gingerbread...
Edit: Thanks to all who pointed me in the right direction. I took the phone back to Eclair then used Samsung KiesMini (twice) to get it back to Gingerbread. After re-rooting and removing the AT&T Bloatware, it works fine again. I might try upgrading again to ICS or JB, but I didn't like Cyanogen 9 at all. Maybe I'm just used to the way AT&T polishes the UI, but Cyanogen didn't appeal at all. Now looking for a relatively polished but lightweight ICS or JB version... Also, it would be nice if when I upgrade it preserves the installed apps and what's on my home screens, but that seems unlikely going from AT&T-branded Gingerbread to an independent ICS or JB.
i have been running slim bean latest till date for some time now on my Captivate. few days back in the morning while i was playing music, my phone freezed for about 30 seconds and suddenly restarted. the problem is that the phone cant even boot. once it loads the kernel image and enters the bootanimation for about 10 seconds, it will keep rebooting till infinity. i left the phone for hours and flashed another Jb rom through the external sd card. after about 4 hours, the phone freezed and restarted with the same circling restart again. i left it for hours longer than before and succeeded in flashing ics rom. this time around, the phone freezed and restarted as usual in 1 hr. i tried to go back to stock gb which i did with heimdall one click package. after flashing the phone rebooted in recovery with errors that cant mount sd card and so on. i flashed an ics kernel luckily for me i was able to access the sd card this time around and flashed an ics rom. within 10nmins the phone freezed and restarted as usual. from here was the last i got progress with this phone. if i succeed in getting into recovery, i will get an error cant mount sd card likewise cant mount ext sd card. the condition of my phone now is that it never enters recovery no matter what i flash all it does, is restart in 2 - 3 secs whether in recovery or not. please what is the solution to this problem. is the chip responsible for mounting sd cards in the phone's main board dead or alive? because each time i manage to see sd card again, the content is always untouched.

Getting in download mode and flashing KK4 through Odin is your best bet atm. Once that's done, keep it that way (only get the apps you need) and see if it reboots again. If so, it is most likely a hardware issue but I'm thinking it isn't so far.
I would also suggest to redownload the ROMs and kernel you want to use and delete the hold ones.
If everything goes well with KK4, move up to a custom ROM (I'm sure you know the drill). But once again, only install the apps you really need (fresh install instead of restoring). A bit of a slow process but better be safe than sorry.

Do you use a external SD?
Usually flashing stock KK4 (through heimdall of Odin) will completely wipe any errors that isn't hardware related.
Just to be clear, KK4 flashes just fine but on the auto-reboot, it goes directly into recovery and gives you that error? If so, are you able to factory reset once you're in recovery?
Usually, after flashing KK4, the phone will fully start so something isn't flashing right. Also, have you tried flashing KK4 with the bootloaders?

I believe I mentionned this before but Odin won't work on the same USB port Heimdall installs it's drivers on. You need to use a different port for both. Also, on a PC, I would highly suggest using the ports in the back for Odin (somehow they always seem to work better).

If you're able to mount through recovery, put the ROMs and kernel you want to flash on your internal SD (16gb). I'm not so sure why it won't read your external but it might be what's causing the errors. So once you moved those (if you're able to mount of course), turn off your phone, remove your external SD and give it another try. Kinda a shot in the dark but we're running short on options here.

I though about that too but flashing KK4 (through Odin or Heimdall) should take care of it and atleast let him boot on stock. I guess it is worth a try tho!
wow. u wont believe this. after sending my last message, i flashed KK4 again just for luck, i got the error as usual. i now did a factory reset, got an error though and rebooted the system. to my greatest surprise and for the first time, it booted to stock and started up without problem. i did a full format of the hard drive immediately as it was almost full. now i've been running the phone for 5 hrs now. and has not experienced any freeze so far.
as for the encryption unsuccessful, YES i've seen it twice. i will read on that and see what might have happened. thanks guys.
