Get a factory-style type cable or adapter is my suggestion. You can plug it in, then remove it for instant power off.

If the button is actually broken, and you bootloader has not been unlocked, then you can send it into Motorola.

Hello
Recently i've bought an broken screen Xperia Z, for repair it (i got it like $300 bucks cheaper) and i was ready to buy the screen, but i battery was drained and i could not test it right, when i connected to the charger, it started red light, vibrate, then 3 continuous vibes, read on the internet, OK BATTERY DRAINED, i left it charge THE WHOLE NIGHT, and when i woke up in the morning it was orange (charging), later in the day it was green (charged) but when i disconnect it, it wont turn on anyways, when i connect it to a pc, it goes blue light (wich later i read it was fastboot mode). i read for making a repair with PCC, but it didnt fixed it, then i flashed it with Flashtool, with the latest software (wich had the Sudden death issue fixed) no luck. it wont boot. for it to boot, i have to connect it to PC and with fastboot run "fastboot continue", but most of the time, it reboots and goes redlight and vibrate 3 times then reboot, so i press the power button and it enters fastboot mode (if connected to PC) or loads charging if connected to wall charger, but it reboots again and goes to redlight vibrate reboot, sometimes it stay charging or in fastboot mode, but only "works" if connected in the USB.
when it stays in fastboot, i do "fastboot continue" and it loads the OS, and it works (well, the things i can do with a broken LCD/Touchscreen, i put my sim card and could call it, and it works, but i cant pick up the call). i can explore the phone memory etc. but if it reboots or if i disconnect the USB, it will almost always turn off. i havn't found a solution (or idea) of what can happen, i dont know if its normal since it has broken lcd/touchscreen or it definitely have a huge problem,
any ideas?
thanks in advance!
Maybe the battery is damaged, and the phone knows it and boots into some sort of safe mode to spare internal damage? When the is has booted you can take screenshots with adb if you have usb debugging enabled. Maybe try see if the os says the battery is damaged?

Well, actually it doesnt seem the battery is damaged, fisically looks ok and it holds charge, i cant debug because usb debugging comes off by default when flash stock software.

Correct me if i am wrong but does the xperia z not support usg-otg and mhl? You could rig the phone up to the tv with a mhl-hdmi cable and maybe use a usb mouse to select things, and enable usb debugging?

Nice idea, now i need to find who in this country (DR) have that adapter
i ordered the LCD screen assembly for repair it myself, but im still concerned about this, as i dont know if it will boot up anyways
my phone right now isnt booting. but as i cant see images i dont know what is it showing.
i noticed the touch screen is working indeed. (when booted, it plays sounds when tapping)
i will wait till the lcd assembly arrives. any ways, any other ideas on what may happen?
the ex-owner of the phone said it started like that when it fell and broke the lcd.
OK now, i've installed the LCD, the phone works, its ON, BUT the Volume Up button and the Power Button does not work when the phone is ON,
the Vol UP button seems always be pressed cause when i press the power button for some seconds, the Phone restarts and not power off or lock/unlock
Service tests: None of these buttons where recognized.
any ideas on any hardware fixes i could try?
I FIXED IT!!
dissasembled the phone, took out the side button flex cable and the volume up button on the flex was dirty, so it was having a false contact. (wich made the button always be pressed)
I took out the yellow tape and cleaned with alcohol and a needle (its so freakin small) and put the tape again and assembled the phone and voila! IT WORKS OK!!
Yes the vol up button pressed means u get fastboot. Now that you fixed the problem and repaired the phone enjoy. Btw nice job getting it up and running.

This is a HARD Bricked phone that first started going berserk after a partial install of a SONY software update. The phone would flash the home screen and continually vibrate. I forced it down with power off. Did not know what I was doing and believe I converted a soft brick to a hard brick. The soft brick at first responded to power button and volume up button to reboot. After that point it became more and more unresponsive to complete death.
It is not recognized by PC (even in the device manager) when plugged into USB port on PC. NO LED or any lights on the phone at all! No red charging LED with charger plugged in, No Sony screen icon, no vibration with power button pushed hard for >10 seconds (with and without pushing up/down volume). The ONLY response I get is an audible windows sound coming from my PC as long as I hold the power and volume up button down.
I have left the phone off a charger for >48 hours and then placed it on the charger for 6-7 hours. Still no red LED while on the phone was on the charger. Reason for me doing this was my reading notes that Sony had a battery error issue that could only be solved by removing the battery or draining it completely. Recharging the battery was suppose to be a fix. A recent poster did this (removed the battery) which is a job and was able to get a red LED but nothing else. There was no reply.
My readings also indicated that there are a number of people with this problem (hard bricked phone) involved with download or install of their software Sony reportedly has a fix to install to correct it. I am a day late and a dollar short.
BTW, the Sony PC companion works up until I connect the phone to the PC and then an error message appears to make sure battery is charged to 80% before proceeding. Ignoring that brings up a troubleshooting screen prompting holding the power button and volume up button for 10 seconds. This is where I get an audible windows connect/disconnect sound coming from my PC that will keep sounding as long ass I hold the buttons down and stops after I remove them. Could this possibly be just a battery issue? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Firstly, you've made one major mistake when you've turned off your phone by using force. It can completely brick your phone forever.
Secondly, if you can hear any sound when connect your phone to USB, then thats mean, that your phone is still in minimal functionality. However, you can give a try to buy a new battery and see, how it goes.
It's better to buy extra battery, than change the whole phone, am I right?
And try to leave your phone without touching it for couple days I think. Maybe your battery somehow has got any fault or it has been faulted when you've force-shutted the phone.
Just give a try and that's all. You can't do anything else, except if you know and you're ready for phone disassembly. If none of my suggested methods will work, then try some other tutorials, you can search for them in XZ category's. I've forgotten how that thread is named, but you can search by some key-words, like : ultimate recovery, back to life, unbrick and etc.,
I hope my information is all correct and helpful, if not, then sorry for disturbation for nothing

My gut tells me that the battery is OK but needs to be recharged. Apparently there is something that will not allow the battery to recharge unless it is removed or drained to zero. I thought I drained it to zero but perhaps not. The other case where the battery was removed and was then able to show a red LED apparently allowed the battery to recycle. That's as far as he got.
In the mean time I'm taking your advise and just letting the phone sit until someone makes a suggestion or I get tired of looking at it.
Thank you for your time and suggestions.
Can you enter the "fastboot" mode (unlocked bootloader) /"flash mode" (locked bootloader) ?
Hold "volume down" button and connect with USB cable to the pc.
So first hold "volume down" button and then connect with USB cable to the pc while holding the "volume down" button. Let go the "volume down" when a green led on your phone appears.
You can still enter the "flash mode" if the green led appears.
Hold "volume up" button and connect with USB cable to the pc.
So first hold "volume up" button and then connect with USB cable to the pc while holding the "volume up" button. Let go the "volume up" when a blue led on your phone appears.
If the blue led appears on your phone you can still enter the "fastboot mode".
There is still hope if the green/blue leds appear on your phone (meaning you can still enter "flash mode" / "fastboot mode".
. But the following question need to be answered:
Has your phone an unlocked bootloader?

It is HARD Bricked. Unresponsive to all of the above w/o any LED response.
Has your phone an unlocked bootloader?
The phone was purchased from Sony and was factory unlocked. It was running fine until the new update from Sony was installed. I believe the update was related to the OS which is 4.4.4.
Thank you.

my moto x 2014 display is broken ....it wont show anything just black screen but the phone still works ..i get messages ...since its on marshmellow
ill have to unlock it and change the usb options from charging only to media storage but display is broken and i cant do that however is there any way i could access the files through pc ..its not rooted but usb debugging is on and also its connected to the wifi ..i tried adb but it wont show any devices because the phone is on charging only mode ...is there anything i can do about this??? any help would be appriciated
Have you tried adb while the phone is at the bootloader? To get to the bootloader, turn off the phone, then press and hold the power button and the volume down button at the same time for about 5-7 seconds. Then release the power button, but continue to hold the volume down button for 3 more seconds. You should then be at the bootloader. I am not sure if adb will work then, but it's worth a shot.
please help my phone get power off and my power button is broken and i cant turn it on. after few try now its always enter to recovery mode but cant select any option dont have button try to connect pc but not reconigze in recovery mod thanks
You officially have a paper-weight now. Does anyone know if there is still a "USB JIG" option for the Note8 and the USB Type-C port?

yes and dont know what to because my screen is a little bit broken and they will charged me new screen for power button
The only way to go would be to change the motherboard, sorry, I always install some apps to reduce the use of the power button since day one, I use gravity screen to awake the screen, and invisible widgets to turn it off, and shortcutter to make a tile to call the power menu, so, I only use the power button to ACTUALLY power the device ON

Here it was, I thought I was being conservative by using fingerprint unlock to save a few presses on my power button.
I wonder if the OP has a saved alarm set to go off at a specific time. I then forgot that the alarm clock doesn't work when the phone is off.

In fact I even try to save presses on volume buttons via virtual button bar

^^^That is taking it too far now. I assume you use wireless charging to save your USB port, and SSH to access your phone remotely, to save your phone from screen burn-in?
Edit: then there is bluetooth speakers / headphones to save the built in speaker.
Hahahaha! Only the wireless charging part too!
i got mine to turn on by doing the downloazd mode, then plug in to a copmputer. it turns on and starts in download or upload or recovery mode, but i cant get it to restart and boot

Hi. How did you manage that without the power button?
Mine broke too.
Hi, just got a google glass xe-c a few days ago. It had a problem with wifi not connecting, trying to activate it using qr code gave an error "cannot connect to network" I had to activate it using mobile data in tether mode. Wifi settings card is always stuck on "turning on" everything else worked fine adb , fastboot hardware buttons etc.
I restored the factory image "xe23" from the official website but no change in wifi status. Today I got the bright idea to "downgrade" it.
just to have a look at older firmware and i thought maybe it would help with my wifi issue so i downloaded and flashed "xe10"
turns out it did not have the "activate using mobile data " feature and only way to activate it is using wifi, so i am stuck at activation screen. I tried pressing camera + power buttons to go into fastboot mode and it wont.
If i disconnect the usb cable , power off the device then hold down camera button and press power button, power led turns on , I release the power button while still holding camera button after a few seconds led is supposed to flash instead it just turns off and after that if i connect the usb cable nothing happens.
I also tried another approach, If i keep the usb cable to the pc, then power down and press the camera +power buttons , led again turns on , pc dectects the glass in fastboot but only for a second , again led turns off and thats it.
