OK so last night I was running aokp and flashed fauxs new test kernel everything was running great I oced the phone to 1.8 and fired up CPU master free made sure everything was good then went into antutu then out of nowhere there was a quick flash and my phone was lifeless. Now this freaked me out because I have never seen nothing like this phone usually just will reboot if oced to high or whatever ....and I have been doing this phone thing for awhile so battery was charged also ....now phone would not turn back on and the only life I could get out of it was a red blinking light when connecting charger or comp. And I managed to get into download mode but this download mode I have never seen before....maybe lg version? Idk . the red light reminded me of xboxs red eye of death. I had nothing but a red blinking light would not power on with any key combo at all. I even let it sit on charger and nothing . I just wanted to make u guys aware of this maybe it was a weird hardware failure but it sucks to know that this could possibly happen. Here are a few pics I grabbed

can you get to fastboot? Hold both volumes and power on. If so, flash stock rom again
Another way to try to get to fastboot is to plug in and then hold both volumes
Odin is a Samsung application.

Why the f you need to OC it to 1.8? Nonsense to me. If the phone bricks, you deserve a new paperweight.
So you overclocked the CPU with a test Kernel and now you are wondering why you maybe fried it?
Btw. for what exactly do you need those 1.8Ghz x 4 on a phone that is more than fast for everything?

The title of your post is somewhat misleading.
The death of your phone was not "random", nor was it caused by "running a simple app".

Thank u for trying to help man
Devs aren't omniscient. Presumably he'll pull it if it's causing bricks. Sucks to be the first one to try it..
It is so remarkably stupid first of all to be messing with overclocking a phone less than a month after you bought it, but fine, I understand people wanting to tinker. It is so remarkably stupid second of all to be overclocking a phone less than a month old that ALREADY HAS THERMAL THROTTLING ISSUES. Seriously, so ridiculously stupid. And no, your title is nonsense. Its not the "simple app" that bricked your phone, its that you are running an experimental kernel for some stupid reason and chose to overclock to some stupid high frequency for some stupid reason and then OF COURSE tried to run a benchmark that ALREADY causes the CPU to thermally throttle on stock, for some stupid reason.
Please no one emulate this stupid behavior.

I don't think he's jealous, he's probably upset that people will still overclock and do VERY unsafe modifications to a beast of a phone that just came out. Even developers haven't fully grasped the Nexus 4. Quad core clocked at 1.5 GHz is more than enough, I'm a PC Builder and I can tell you the extra 300 MHz is hardly noticeable. Now a 600 MHz to a 1 GHz increase would be noticeable. However, you would fry that processor like bacon. GOOD LUCK, I really hope you do get it working again, I love my Nexus 4 so I can imagine how you feel dude.

your absolutely right and I am NOT going to argue that but this is why we are at XDA right? So for this to happen is kind of freaky but I did not know what happened see I have done this with many other phones you know it doesn't matter if it first came out 3 weeks ago or whatever if you shouldn't have happened who knows what caused it maybe it wasn't the kernel maybe it was something totally different maybe it was a combo of the things

They are not "little things"
The phone has issues with audio for some users, and issues with sleep mode for others.
Battery life is not too good so far. Keyboard issues. Camera doesn't work.
You're underestimating the huge work devs are doing on this by saying that there are no mayor issues.
There's a LOT of work required to fix this "little things", as you call them, and you don't seem to even know enough to understand how much work that is.
You should learn some respect.
Once the kernel is stable some one is going to take the time to overclock the phone, that's for sure. Until then you should wait patiently and use the spare time to learn a little. Maybe that way you can even help the community.
All your questions are answered in the dev thread, read about it there (mentions a few places why this kernel is already overclocked even...)
say that again with audio and camera and this is non kex i got one with kexec

My understanding is only some D3s will run at 1.2GHz and while this may seem like an overclock, its actually a case of the stock settings being an underclock of some binned chips (1-1.2GHz).

Don't try explaining anything to this guy, many of us have tried, but there's no use.
He just either wants to see the "1200" number on his settings, or he wants to feel like a "0mg l33t h4x0r" or something like that, because all he seems to care about is overclocking. Even tho' the rom he's trying to overclock is still in alpha stage and the developers are logically focused on getting it to a complete state before getting to OC ( if they ever get to that )
He'll just dismiss whatever you say talking like the whole comunity is begging for OC or talking like he's leading cutting edge innovation, while neither of those are true.

He's not even using a Kexec based rom. Its hard to tell, because the font he uses causes eye cancer, but he's using a OC 2.3 moto kernel.
His argument is moot. We are arguing about space flight and he's arguing that his tricycle has tassles, which we already know about. If its not kexec, it doesn't matter. Let him play with his tassels.

I have been following most of the AOSP threads fairly closely to see people's experiences and I have seen a disturbing amount of people report bricked phones. The odd thing about it is that these bricks didn't occur during the process of flashing a rom. They all happened (or most of them at least) while trying to power on the phone after it was turned off or in deep sleep. Here are links to posts by DIFFERENT AOSP rom users who all experienced similar issues (one of these posts contain links to 3 other posts):

I personally have run Slim's rom for a good 4-5 hours w/o problems. However, I went back to Sense shortly thereafter. I'm not trying to cause some kind of panic but on the same hand I don't want to see people sitting around with a $500 desk ornament. Bottom line is we are responsible for what we do with our phones and as a result we should do as much research as possible before flashing anything. Look before you leap!
Edit: Here is an additional means to record your brick experience:

Yep just be careful guys the only warning I had to something strange happening was that my phone didn't charge at all when I turned it off (to try and charge it fast) it still charged while powered on however. But once it died that was it. Also no overclocking or system setting where really changed in my case.
Here's how I got a replacement went in and told them it wouldn't turn on and I myself at the time thought it was the battery so they said that could be it but again I wasnt to sure and neither where them. I ended up paying 50$ without tep

That's some messed up stuff.... You shouldn't have had to pay since it was a "hardware" issue. It should've been covered under the manufacturers warranty.

I know but whenever i've had a problem like that it's always been a free fix through sprint......
yeah I am in the same boat, I believe I was the first to report this. At first I thought it was just me and I passed it off as nothing. Since I've got my replacement I've watched people starting to trickle in with the same exact problem on AOSP I would definitely avoid flashing AOSP until the cause is narrowed down and solved if possible. As I said before it would be a damn shame not to run AOSP on this mighty device, but I have to stick with sense for now and hope that this problem is squashed soon.
Wow really? How upsetting. I'll have to keep an ear open. If there is any news regarding this issue please share

Has anyone on a NON AOSP rom run their battery down and had it die? Did it charge? I know on a few other phones it was actually the recovery that had this issue. I would try it myself but as I have my phone through work, replacing it is a bit more complicated.
I work for sprint and had a guy come in who bricked his phone. A simple relock of the bootloader and an ruu flash and bam phone was up and working fine. Is that not working for aosp bricks? I've personally haven't had any problems out of aosp roms

you are not able to relock the bootloader. we're talking total shut down, no power, no charge, no recovery, no bootloader, no fastboot adb devices, not a thing period point blank. i have the dead device still, and for the life of me cannot get it to do anything. I have been on my replacement for 2 weeks now running sense. hopefully the cause and solution are near.

I'm with you on that
Until we get more kernel sources/reliable code out of HTC, playing with AOSP can be a dangerous game. And tbqh, it could well be OP's fault (not saying it is, but it can be). Flashing custom software of any kind is going to give your carrier/OEM an easy way out if anything goes wrong, which everyone really should keep in mind before making the jump.
What recovery are the "bricked" users running. TWRP or CWM?
Yeah I had my battery die completely on a sense Rom, but I was easily able to charge it and turn it back on 2 minutes later.
Sent from My Only "One"
Glad I'm doing a lot of reading before I make the jump back to HTC. Seems like the One is more of a pain in the ass to Develop (safely) for than the GS3. Looks like I'll be sticking to sense for a while.
For once in all of my android ownership, I'm not really pressed to switch to aosp so this isn't a huge deal for me. The phone is already blazing fast and I actually enjoy and use a lot of the features HTC has implemented into Sense 5. And HTC's browser is the smoothest I've ever used. I do hope someone figures out the problem though. Hate to see more people get bricked.

So far, only TWRP users have reported this issue.
I don't want to be Mr. Obvious but I'm assuming that you guys have already tried the trick of putting your phone under a bright light, etc etc
Hi guys of xda!! I am jumping off from Symbian OS to Android! Bought myself a second-hand One for 300$ and I love the build quality, Boom Sound and all that!
However, it appears that I have been somewhat cheated by the previous owner, he's told me that it has a remainder of 3 month warranty left with HTC, but it expires next month. :X So I kinda have to look around my phone to see if there are any issues that I can highlight on when I send it (please do tell me if the problems I am about to mention are worth sending to HTC and leave me without a working phone for weeks)
Current issues I am encountering are:
1) It LAGS when playing games, watching Youtube and using the Facebook app, I am unsure if this is normal, but from what I see on the reviews, it should be close to buttery smooth, right? Come on, I didn't think the frame rate would drop to (roughly 20 fps?) on Jetpack Joyride! It just keeps stuttering! D:
2) I have triple checked with the previous owner on the rear camera issue on whether it'd have the tint problems, he had informed me that he had already gotten it fixed, which I believe it is. HOWEVER it did not occur to me to check the front-facing camera.. here's how the front-facing camera looks like (please forgive me if I am violating any image size limit on this forums. :\).

It is WAY worse in lower-light, really, really RED. Tried Googling about, not much complaints on the red tint on the FRONT camera, should I get it fixed with HTC? Tried fiddling with the settings, doesn't change much, red tints are still present, is that normal?
3) Err, don't think there's any more other than the issues highlighted above, could you please suggest me to check on any common issues that I might have left out? So that I may request for a warranty-covered repair.
P/S: The lags and red tints are present no matter the phone's temperature, I've tried it in both coldness and warmth.
I have not attempted on rooting the phone or anything at all, here are the versions:
Android 4.4.2
HTC Sense 5.5
Software Number 4.20.707.6
HTC SDK API level 5.69

Also to note: When I booted this phone for the first time, there was a welcome page to set up and things, and the camera image count was from 0001, but it came with an extra app called Wechat (it's a popular Whatsapp alternative here in Malaysia) I am unsure if the phone has been factory reset before it was handed to me, because if it was, I don't think resetting it again would help much, right?
Thank you so much for your time! Would really appreciate any help I could get!
You can try to factory reset the phone and see if the lag is still there. Both my htc ones have red front camera in low light. You can't tell if your phone is rooted that way. My phone is also not rooted and shows [email protected] Check if there is supersu app installed, if there is that means its rooted

hello snoopy! May I ask if there is a way for me to backup my apps and settings into my laptop before I attempt a factory reset? Would HTC Sync be enough? I do not see any supersu app installed. Thank you!

Use HTC Backup. Just do a backup before you factory reset, then when you're setting up the phone again, just choose the "restore from a backup" instead of starting fresh.
The red tint issue is just really random and you either have it or not. There really is nothing you can do about it other than talk with HTC and get a replacement.

hmm.. is there even a chance for this to be a manufacturer's defect on the hardware that is causing the inconsistent frame rates, in your opinion?

Pi in 140, 141 average. Now downloading AnTuTu, is there a benchmark app that you'd like me to test out on?
EDIT: AnTuTu score: 28403

It's not common, but it can happen. This is what I got and my phone doesn't lag at all. 20291 in antutu. Benchmarks are totally useless.

sorry, i think this is a stupid question, but wouldn't changing ROM be considered as rooting? or requiring a root? That would ultimately void the warranty right?

urgh.. don't even know if it's actually just my eyes playing tricks on me or what.. the lag issues are only when playing games, ALL games. Home screens and stuff are just too smooth.

That's a tricky question. If your phone has a hardware defect, I don't think HTC can legally get out of honoring the warranty (but I'm not sure). The problem is, if you've rooted, it will be much harder for you to argue that it definitely is a hardware defect. I would have it serviced if you can get warranty service. And BTW, on my phone (rooted, custom ROM), Jetpack Joyride has occasional frames of lag (mostly in the beginning of the level), but gameplay seems smooth after that.

You can always relock the bootloader and remove all traces of you rooting it. (S off).
As the other guy said, if there really is a problem, I would get it replaced now.

Well, @aSuperSaiyanG0D and I decided it'd be a good idea to bring an OT thread to the forums
So I'll keep things short and simple to start with. This thread is not for discussing issues with phones or anything, it's for the the exact opposite.
What are everyone's thoughts on the iPhone 6?
When do you think Android L will release?
Anybody pick up Destiny since it released?
All I have to say bout iPhone 6....

I literally just showed that to my sister and she said, "I don't care how great an Android is, I'll always want an iPhone."
It's a social symbol these days. And I guess in our society our value is what others perceive of us. So yeah, people are going to keep buying those things. Breaks my heart.
Although I will say, the slow motion video could be kind of cool. Not that I'd see myself using it.
The only thing bout iOS that I'll admit is kinda nice, is when you jailbreak, and something screws up, it's very very hard to brick it. Just use iTunes and you can just restore it.
But then again, that would be to easy huh? Cx
Haha, I can't count how many times I've restored my phones via KDZ flashes... Nearing a hundred I assume lol.
Wow look apple made the iPhone 6 bigger and faster never saw that coming. Not really ground breaking stuff
I think that ios8 is a nice update for the ifags.
Has is some cool stuff, all things android has had for awhile.
But I still wouldn't buy a iPhone. In my opinion iPhone are the Nokia of the 90s, generic as [email protected]#k.
Really looking forward to see what android brings with its android L release.
The Sony xperia z2 has slow motion camera too

You hit the nail on the head. It's a status thing. Most people spend way too much time worrying about what others think of them. This distorts their own perception of themselves. I figured out early in life, as a teenager, that it really doesn't matter to me what others think of me. I am who I am the way I am.
On another note... CM11 currently building and I am waaayyy past where I was getting errors earlier. No longer using CAF kernel. Switched to LGs kernel base instead, for the time being anyways. Having to do a fresh build so it won't finish til @ 0400 EST.

Exactly how I feel, too! I'd rather gauge out my eyeballs and pull out my fingernails than "fit in". All that leads to is either hating or being hated. Life's way too short to worry about what the popular girl or guy at school is wearing or using.
I'm pretty much of a misfit anyway so there's no way I'll be able to fit in even if I tried. Hahaha.

Before owning this phone I just wrote off LG as a Samsung copy cat. Considering how similar the UI and features they share. After owning this phone I have come to the conclusion that LG UI(whatever they call their UI) is touchwiz done right. Much like how I feel about MIUI iOS done right as well...still can't wait until more AOSP roms are present. Hoping this unreal price attracts devs to tinker with it

You are literally the only person to have these results..
Stop spamming. You screwed something up while installing it (hard to do because I gave you the lines to copy/paste over) or you are running some kernel or ROM causing this drain. I'd like to see something other than the battery graph, to see what your app usage was...
Go home troll.

I actually wasn't trying to be a troll or spam. I'm on an AT&T V10 so I'm obviously running stock Rom rooted (as there's no unlocked bootloader yet). Only other thing I have from xposed is gravity box only for visual changes. I copied and pasted directly to the ETC folder as you stated was allowable later in the thread. I only asked to see because, like you said, it's hard to mess something up. Don't really appreciate being called a troll for asking a simple question....
Edit: only other thing I can think of is I changed batteries on a daily basis because I'm away from outlets for most of the day and have nowhere to recharge. I think I read something that the phone takes up battery on start up. But without this mod I would usually get 5-6 hours SOT and about 14 hours on a full charge

Your screen shot included nothing but a battery graph. No app usage, no explanation of what you are running / doing. And your saying "I'm rooted running xposed and all stock" is not you running stock. It is you running xposed rooted and probably with other small modifications here and there.
Just would be useful to not just come up here and make it look like this script magically destroyed your battery life somehow when it is literally nothing but basic shell scripts to modify very high level parameters of device operation. Like I said, you are literally the only person to ever have an issue. Post something useful other than "hey this is terrible here's a one off screen shot and no other information about what makes me unique from everyone else."
I didn't respond to your original question in the other thread because it was uninformative as to what you might have done wrong while installing the file. You posted a graph, then asked what you did wrong.
Good question. I have no idea. But obviously something because I've been using this for weeks now, and many other people as well and nobody has experienced this mystery battery sucking you are seeing.
It is important to note that your device will boot with all CPU governors set to "performance" which taps your frequency to max. This file changes it post boot, so if you didn't copy the file, or more importantly didn't set it's permissions properly afterwards, your device will be stuck running performance, possibly reboot, and certainly will suck your battery dry very quick.
You need to give me more if you want my help, otherwise I will ignore you. I do this stuff for a living and it isn't my job to be a test engineer for your device as well as my own.

Sorry for the confusion. Yes I meant stock Rom as in no custom Rom. And as stated all I have xposed wise is gravity box with visual only.
I'm going to try a factory reset as someone else stated and copy only your file and see what happens after a few days.
I'm no noob when it comes to flashing and changing parameters which is why I was confused about why this had such a detrimental effect.
Again I thank you for your hard work and all the positive things you've given xda on your own time. I'm sure it's just something to do with only upgrading from root and not starting fresh

@greekunit690 it might just be coincidence, but under your display settings try unchecking & rechecking the Auto option under Brightness. I've found that for whatever reason the brightness setting will get stuck at the highest level even though I have Auto selected. This has led to rapid battery drain for me when it happens.

Its not hard. Just follow the instructions and use terminal emulator to input the commands. After you do it once from the commands you can simply copy and paste the file in the appropriate folder and correct the permissions when an update is posted.
