Have superuser installed, have root explorer and ES file explorer installed.
I installed google services framework apk
i installed market apk which works until you attempt to download anything, then it crashes.i could not get it to set to rw/r/r its set to rw/rw/r
I downloaded google play apk but it crashes every time i try to open it. same security set as above
Would love some help in getting this to work.
since rooted facebook keeps crashing but tweetcaster has been rock solid.

You have to get the permissions set to rw-r--r--. That could be causing your problem. to set the permissions in root explorer just long press on the apk and you should see an option for permissions. Then reboot
no matter what rom I use, on any phone. I always chmod 777 all of the modified apks and it seems to work.
Currently waiting on my kf2 to get here. so no help on specifics. sorry.

I'm by no means an expert but on every unix like system I've ever worked with giving more permissions than needed did not compromise the ability of programs to run or the user to do stuff that was needed. It did however compromise the security of the system .... so for what it's worth I don't believe your issue is due to the permissions you set and would look elsewhere first.

If you are using the tablet as a stand alone device, i.e. not networked, and you don't ever take it out of the house; not an issue. However, part of the reason these permission are there and not everything has read, write and execute privileges (777 = rwxrwxrwx) is security. Thus setting everything to 777 is a security risk and potentially leaves gaping security holes which could be used to gain access to your device. Thus I would classify this as a BAD IDEA if you keep any data of value on your device and are worried about having it exposed.

GoogleLoginservie.Apk fails and wont install
I had it working before the kindle updated and undid my root the other day. This was the only post I could find of someone having the exact problem I am having with the KF2. Is this some kind of hidden amazon security feature to keep us from using google? I am at my wits end on this one. =/

So, I pulled a noob move and uninstalled a number of apps using titanium backup without understanding the repercussions of each. After uninstalling a few at a time, I would reboot my device and everything seemed fine. Little did I know, after uninstalling most, if not all, of the bloat I am unable to click a contact's picture to bring up the submenu and select call or text or whatever.
I didn't write down a list of items that I uninstalled and I should have frozen the apps prior to uninstall. I'm not a complete idiot and stayed away from obvious apps that shouldn't be uninstalled and what I thought was ALL motroblur stuff.
Long story short, I get a "com.motorola.contacts" stopped unexpectedly error(force close prompt) after trying to view a contact. I can look through all of the dialer menus showing contacts and recent calls and whatnot but I can't view a specific contact in detail. The searching I've done seems like there are a number of apps that use com.motorola.contacts and I believe I still have all of them installed but apparently not since there isn't a ton of detail on the latest motoblur that the D3 runs.
Does anyone have an idea of what apps use this process on the D3?
Thanks.
Problem solved.

Thanks again Javier
Same situation here. I'm guessing it was the yahoo contact storage, but I'm not entirely sure. I tried pushing the yahoo app back into the system folder, but it still throws the error, even after resetting the phone.
Keep in mind that the entire system has been dumped, so I think it's as easy as grabbing the necessary apks from the system dump and put it back on the Droid 3.
It might be the best idea to reference the original list and restore what's missing then:
http://pastebin.com/HEtYBmuz
I got this same message. I defrosted all and redid. I think its the authenticators that's causing them, I re freezed stuff I didn't want and everytime I finished I checked to see if my contacts were working. They are as of now :]

As it turns out, I was partially correct. The files that were missing were "YahooContacts.apk", "YahooContacts.odex", "blur_yahoo.apk" and "blur_yahoo.odex" (I've attached them for your convenience). Move these files onto the SD card, and using root explorer, move them to "/system/app". The important part: Once you move these files to this directory, you must change their permissions and their owner. Here are the steps if you are using root explorer:
1. Mount the directory as R/W in the top right corner.
2. Press and hold the file, and go to permissions. Change the permissions so that the Owner has read and write privileges, Group has read privileges, and Others have read privileges. Do this for the other files you copy over (This is important! These won't be recognized as system apps if the permissions are messed up).
3. Press and hold the file again, and change both the owner and group to root. Do this for all the files you copy over as well.
4. Reboot.
This pretty much solved the problem for me. Now I know better than to go uninstalling willy-nilly.

Javier, thanks a ton, you saved my ass. Also, this finally gave me an excuse to purchase Root Explorer.
As far as you know, is there any risk to setting these files with such high permissions?
Also, do we know what the chances are, of getting rid of these files all together or is that going to require a custom ROM?
As far as I can tell, these are the standard permissions set for every system app. There shouldn't be any risks.
As for getting rid of all these files...that may require a custom ROM. Not entirely sure.
Oh, and it was nothing, really. I'm just glad I got myself out of that mess.
followed instructions, still not working
i restored the yahoo stuff, changed permissions and owner to -rw-r--r-- and root; changed group to root as well. rebooted and contacts is still crashing. could there possibly be more apps associated with contacts than just yahoo? i put blur_email back as well but that hasn't helped things.

I couldn't get it to work either until I tried this http://www.droidforums.net/forum/te...tacts-wont-display-droid-x-w-gingerbread.html
See post #3. After doing this, I pulled battery, turned back on. It boot-looped once, then started up. Took a minute to load, but viola! My contacts worked again!
Hi Javier78,
Thanks in the first place for such a great post. I also had the forced closed contacts problem and i took all the steps that are needed but the problem still exists.
I placed the 4 Yahoo files in system/app with Root Explorer, changed the things that you said and also the owner to root.
Then i removed the battery, put it back in but i still have the forced closed problem.
What did i do wrong in the first place?

Nevermind, found the problem. I needed the exact files for my Atrix 4G with the same android version.

I have a question about step "3". I'm using "Root Explorer" on a Droid Bionic and I see no way of changing the owner and group to "root" as "Root" doesn't show up anywhere on the permissions screen. I'm thinking that this last step is preventing me from solving my problem.
Could someone set an old fart straight on how this is accomplished?
EDIT: Also, I just noticed that I uninstalled the Yahoo Mail Authenticator and most likely that is my problem. Does anyone have the files I can put back into the system folder?
Thanks,
Got it. My problem was I deleted the com.motorola.blur.provider.yahoo files needed. Once I obtained those three files it works fine now.

Yes, thanks a lot to all of you, guys... just couple of additional tips from complete beginner as myself:
- In order to be able to copy files there, you must turn the "Airplane mode" ON.
- Even if the "Execute" permission is already turnd ON and seems tasty (after all, you are trying to EXECUTE these functions ... UNTICK it. otherwise it wont work. Simply do EXACTLY as you are told on the posts above.
Lastly: In my case Yahoo stuff was already there (previously I have frozen it using TB and then found here at XDA that I have to defrost it) ... I brought myself this error by freezing some other apps... if there was comprehensive list of what does what and if it is safe to freeze/uninstallit, it would be helpful.
My current culprits are:
Work Contacts
Dlna
GoogleServicesFramwork
BlurContacts
BlurContactsSync
SmartDock
KpiLogger
VoiceSearch
VoiceReadout
SimContactsAdapter
GoogleContactsSyncAdapter
... to name some of many.
- Things get even more difficult considering that different people use different services: myself, I have all my contacts on Exchange and synchronize using Touchdown - so I personally do not need Google stuff related neither to contacts, nor to calendar - but others live different life.
i am having the same problem with my rooted droid x2 i have tried the this process but no luck

If you're using root explorer, and you've successfully navigated your way to to the system/app section... select and continue to hold until the options menu displays, then you can scroll down to "change owner" (it's a few below permissions and properties, just keep scrolling until you come to it) then it's a simple drop option screen. The window doesn't look like you can scroll down, but you can. Also, someone posted a zip file for the yahoo apps, but those will only address certain sync issues (that most people in this post seem to be having). Be sure to have the unzipped files located on you "sdcard-ext" for moving. You'll have to move them one-by-one and change the permissions and owner/group settings for each once they're in system/app location.

More info. This is the way I did it first:

I also installed it the way the link you sent describes.
I will tell you that both versions are equally unstable on my phone. It will run but lots of FCs and having to clear cache. I don't think it's quite ready yet.
Works (sort off) for me. A replacement for rootexplorer can be ES file explorer (free). Solid looks better but doesn't work as well (for me at least).

Granted - it's designed for the S3 - far cry from the S1..
I'll check out your other method. I didn't have root explorer, so tried installing then making it a system app via TiBu then reboot recovery & fix permissions. Didn't work though. Got a warning 'running low on space' (or system memory) on boot and then FC'd. One time, I got through the setup prompts until the end and then got FC'd.
--
BTW - looking at the package name in TiBu said something about vlingo.somethingorother... so it's obviously something like vlingo which I didn't really ever use either. I do like the google voice to text transcription, but not sure how much better my life would be fulfilled by shouting 'Hey Cappy' at my phone all day.
I believe Amazon released an update today as my KFHD just rebooted itself and turned back on with a progress bar. My question or issue is this: does an update automatically cause a rooted KFHD to lose root access? I still have access to Google Play store and a bunch of apps I could only access through root. And most of the apps still work except LMT Launcher, which is the only one that is no longer working as far as ive noticed. So all I have to do is plug back in and root my KFHD again and I should be good, right?
Version 7.3.0 is out. Here are the specs from the Amazon page:
"Support for X-Ray for Textbooks
Explore the “bones” of your textbook, and access all the most important terms and concepts, with glossary definitions and links to relevant textbook pages.
Simplified Chinese Support
In addition to the other languages offered, you can now change your device language to Simplified Chinese.
Track your reading progress with Time To Read
Kindle Fire HD 7” calculates your reading speed to let you know when you’ll finish a chapter or book.
Support for Kindle Editions with Audio/Video
You can now read books that contain audio and/or video clips.
Print Replica Textbook Enhancements
Scroll through thumbnails at the bottom of the screen to preview pages and jump quickly between chapters, and mark important notes and highlights in your Notebook for easy reference."
None of this seems overly important, but then again I do like to have the latest version as long as there is no harm to the root.

Anything you install as a system apk will be deleted. When amazon sends an update it typically sends system.img, recovery.img and boot.img.
That is why the lmt launcher will not work because it has to be installed as a system.apk to work, same with root access since su binary is placed within the system files.
if you want to install the 2nd bootloader, you should not update. Amazon have fixed the bootloade with the update and so it dosn't work for now. i don't know, if it perhaps work with soupkit, because the insallation is a little bit different, but the resultat is the same (I could install kinelogy 1.1 after doing that).
I'm still on 7.2.1, found Wi-Fi performance/range considerably better than on 7.2.3, unless 7.3.0 improves it I won't be updating for quite some time.
This explains why I lost root and Go Launcher HD yesterday. Regained root with the same Noob Simple guide here with little more than annoyance. The file to prevent the OTA update had been moved per the guide (otacerts.zip) but think I deleted it in a cache cleaning frenzy... that will learn me

Ouch! I got caught by this update . . . i am now running 7.30 on my KFTT 7"
Sad, since I had a nice rooted image all set up well. Unfortunately, I became a bit lazy and did not check on whether or not I had effectively disabled updates during my last restore/reflash of 7.2.3 (I had not done that ;-(
sigh! Like you, I have all my apps and the Play store working, but anything requiring root -like root explorer or TIBU, won't work until I can reroot on this version -or flashback. . . The only question is whether the root exploitation works on this new version, I am not sure any of us has tried yet. . .oh well. . here we go (again!)
EDIT: OK, I was able to re-root the same way I did before (used the tools in prokennexusa noob threads!) All back to normal!

Same root method worked, system feels about the same with tweaks installed and benchmarked similarly (7344 vs 7444 with AnTuTu)
I just can't get my launcher off of the stock one. Nothing will take.
I simply plugged my KFHD back in and re-rooted. I regained access to applications that required system access. So my LMT is working again. I didn't lose any apps as far as I've noticed. This update turned out to be a pretty minor inconvenience.

I had this issue as well - and then noticed something else that was really weird. When I tried to move to /system/app it only moved to system - but I also noticed (at least in my case) it was renaming the file by adding "app" (which was the folder name I was trying to move it to) on the front of the file name - so... GoLauncher HD.apk was being renamed appGoLauncher.apk but was landing in the /system folder instead of /system/app
So - I created a new folder called "temp" in the /System/App directory (i.e /system/app/temp) and moved the files there. Sure enough, they landed in /system/app with the the word "temp" appended to the front of the file name, so GoLauncher.apk was now tempGoLauncher.apk. However, it was in the right directory - so I then simply renamed it by removing the "temp" from the front of the name and continued with install
I still have lots of other issues though in getting it to work. It appeared to be working for a while, but has stopped again.

Actually, I tried 3 different ways.
1) I reluctantly attempted ProKennexusa's method via the KFFFirstAide tool. I say reluctantly since I'm pretty much a Nova snob. I guess luckily for me, it wouldn't take.
2) I then moved onto downloading Nova from the store. The store claimed that both installs went good, but had no option to change my launcher. Upon inspection, the Nova launcher file was nowhere to be found on the device. The pro unlocker could be found, but no the launcher.
3) Since I had a couple of older copies in Dropbox, I figured I'd try those. Usually I could install straight from Dropbox. Not last night. I could launch the install, but the Kindle wouldn't allow me to press the install button. I then just saved the file to the device and still couldn't get it to install. It wasn't until moving it to system/app that I was able to actually install it. But still, no option to set it as my launcher.
This morning, in a bit of Kindle rage, I literally rebooted the device 23 straight times pausing between boots to see what happened. On the 23rd reboot, it finally asked me which launcher to set as default. So now I finally have gotten away from the freakish kindle launcher and am back at home with Nova.
Basically i cant move apps to System/app folder, or change permissions of applications. Even i cannot change build.prop with modifications. Any change i make, return to its original state. Im using Root explorer and I always set R/W permission to do any change.

after you do that you need to press volume down to put the cursor over recovery then pretty volume up to select it and you will be in recovery and your changes will actually remain set after reboots.
Ok...I did it like you say...but Recovery does not start. Is like when i reboot the device... :/

I can't believe people still don't know how to do this or understand how this root works. When you boot into recovery it boots into R/W permission off. You no longer have stock recovery after you make changes then reboot normal and the changes will be permanent.

What the heck! I swear, I've been looking for this answer for the last day. No guides I've read indicate this needs to happen.
Thanks!

Ok try another file manager I use es file explorer mainly but it is finicky even though you have root it doesn't let you change certain things. I have Rom toolbox pro and use the root explorer works every time. If this doesn't work for you then you may not actually be rooted download a root checker and make sure.

I did exactly this. Tried it with both Build Prop Editor and it wasn't working. Then root explorer, saved, and exited the program. that time it worked.
And, as soon as I did that, got everything up an running at 260dpi. Looks great, but, active notifications doesn't work any longer. Shame. Now I gotta figure that out!

If I had to bet change the screen resolution messed with the active notifications they may require a certain DPI.
Tried setting specific DPI to that as well and no dice.

ps es file explorer works with root but you have to select root explorer and turn it on in the settings. Even after you tunr it on, you have to select settings after that (by clicking on root explorer again) and scroll down to remount r/w then change all the diretories to rw. Then it won't be finicky and will let you do everything you want to.
I came from Android 5.1.0 and had everything working.
I am using Viper4Android for years and always could get it to work... Probably the same now, but for now I didn't succeed.
My upgrade to Android M preview was done without any real preparation. When I took my phone out my pocket 2 days ago it was in a boot screen and asked me for the access code.
When I entered it I saw it was wiping all data of my phone...
Luckily I have Titanium Backup and decided this was also the day to try those previews of Marshmallow.
I copied the the folders Whatsapp and TitaniumBackup to my PC and installed it.
I was pleasantly surprised in the way it restored my desktop, but that was after I had to set my WiFi to a static IP or else I was not getting an IP.
Later I learned that I need to select the "old DHCP-client" to get access.... (why make a new one if the old one works and the new one doesn't?)
I was able to install restore as it was before, but I can't get Viper4Android to work.
I suspect it's something with Selinux.
I restored the app that changes the SeLinux through Titanium (I'm mentioning it as it might be the reason).
It gained root access, but already said it was running in "permissive" mode. Not explicitly, but I could only select enforcing.
Another difference with my previous system is that I don't have that warning all the time that I need to remove that app (the Selinux changer).
I also have root explorer on my phone and that one behaves strange when I set it into "root mode"
Suddenly I can't get straight to the SDCard and when I from root via mnt to my download folder I can see some files with a size, but files I recently downloaded are 0 bytes.
These files have normal sizes when I look at it in normal mode and also when I do an "ls -al" from a terminal session.
The files that have sizes are pushed there using the USB-cable via MTP. The files with 0 bytes are downloaded using Chrome...
I would be interested to know if others have succeeded to get Viper4Android working on this build on the Nexus 6
flash this http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=3375659&d=1435075941 then flash viper, then boot up.
Thank you very much, that did the trick.
I noticed there was an APK of viper4android in that zip, so I didn't install the viper4android afterwards as I was afraid there would be something in that package which could spoil it.
Thanks.
I would really like to know what part fixed it.
