Hey guys. I trolled through this forum a little trying to find a basics of basics guide.
Put simply I know very little about the android scene coming from an I phone.
I have rooted my I9305 and am looking to take it further.
Have followed this post to back up everything http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1967124
I'm all up for learning just need a point in the right direction.
I guess what I'm after is answers to some questions a noon would have.
Like.
If I install a custom rom will I loose everything first, contacts etc.
I'm on optus, does this mean I need an optus modem install.
Actually what the hell is a modem install.
Don't even get me started on what u think a kernel is.
But hey I would love to learn.
Sorry if this has been posted before or if there is a post with the answers I need somewhere I missed.
Oh and hello

The answers to all your questions are answered in the I9300 forums. The same applies to your i9305, just DO NOT flash I9300 ROMS, Themes or Kernels on your device as you could brick it.
ONLY FLASH THINGS FROM THE i9305 forum

Hey guys, if you know me on DroidForums, I was one guy who would flash all the ROMs in the Custom ROM section. With the Captivate, I'm confused with all the bootloaders, since I never needed to worry about that stuff with the Droid. So can someone explain to me how to flash bootloaders, and how to know which bootloaders I need? (btw I'm on mac)
Lol,
How to flash bootloaders is actually stickied.

Ok, thanks, but what about compatibility between a Gingerbread ROM and a Froyo ROM? This never happened to me because on the Droid, you could just flash the hell out of the phone and didn't have to worry about bootloaders, all you could do is wipe and install, and you were done.
Please search before opening a new thread, let alone a new thread in the wrong section. Do your research.

Something is seriously b0rked in your system, so I'd advise you to go
back to rooted stock like this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=25285584&postcount=3
You'll have full root after that, and your CWMR will be fully functional.
For now my phone is useable, everything works but not cwmr.... Should i still need to get a new stock rom?
From what i read in the topic you link to me...
Does it del away my kernel and etc....?

See this post here... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11504670&postcount=1 --- specifically the paragraph on "What is Andromeda?"
Not sure what else to say, other than you will probably have to do some more searching online to find out for sure if the hardware is completely the same...but it appears to be so. But in the end, flash at your own risk. :good:
Thanks for youre answer.
I have try the capativate rom and its working fine when i folow the description from youre link.
There is only one small thing, my i9010 is now a capativate because of the kernel i think. i will try today another kernel from i9010 and i will see whats going to hapen. I am now on cm10 capativate.
Thanks alot mate.
Cheers

Hi. Im pretty new to all this and was just looking for some guidance. I got the Captivate about under 2 years ago and have never updated it? I tried to using Kies but it never worked. Always said that the device wasnt recognised or something. So my question is, what is the latest stock firmware for the Captivate and how can i flash it?
Thanks!
latest official supported version is 2.3.5, KK4 -gingerbread.
you can find links to stock roms and tools for flashing in the stickies at the top in the captivate android development forum.

I run Linux and only linux and must admit I am finding it a bit frustrating that all my googling for how to flash CWM on to another linux device (android) involve Windows software Odin.
I originally flashed CWM with Rom Manager (on the advice of the only tutorial I could find for rooting without Odin), but I want/need to upgrade to v6 to be safe with pershoot's latest CM10 rom and Rom Manager won't help here.
Surely there is some sort of commandline trick that should be able to do this without need to plug into another device in the first place? I tried
dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p13
But that didn't seem to work. Given it's from a tutorial for another device, no surprise. At least it didn't brick things.

What makes you think cwm 6 is "safer"?
I hardly know anyone using it having one for galaxy tab.
That certainly makes it less safe.

pershoot recommends it if you want to use his CM10 builds.
For P1000? Galaxy tab 7" original?
I have suspicion you have tab 10" ..
