[Q] D3-bad esn.. use with Mobi PCS? - Motorola Droid 3

Hi...I live out in Hawaii, and mobi PCS has the best reception where i live. I have a couple questions I could not find the answers to from searching around the forums.
I'm looking at buying a Droid 3 with a bad ESN from Ebay...
1. It seems from what i've read that it doesn't matter about the ESN since I will be using it for MobiPCS instead of VZW (it is a VZW branded phone)...is that true?
2. All i need to do is bring it to the MobiPCS store and have them flash it??
2a. Should i expect a fee for flashing it?
2b. Does anyone have the software and I could flash it to Mobi myself?
3. Do I need to find an unlock code since VZW and Mobi are both CDMA? (from what i read it looks like i don't need a code?)
3a. I'm totally a noob about androids..but I am great with computers, and I have read quite a lot about rooting and installing roms. If question 3 is answered yes,.can't i just root the phone before bringing it into the store?
3b. What is the best way to root a Droid 3, and what is the best rom? -I mainly just want to tether it's 3g to my laptop, and use it for phone calls and text msg.
Thank you guys for ANY/ALL answers. Sorry if my questions have been answered in other forum topics...I simply could not find these answers.
Aloha from Maui!!

My Droid 3 has a bad esn and i flashed it to work with at&t and t-moble and am using my moms t-moble sim in it. But I don't know if it works with mobi PCS because were I'm from we don't have that service were I'm at I know if they use a sim that works with t-moble phones and at&t with out unlocking thim like straight talk does then the sims will work and if the mobi PCS does not use sims then your sol if it has a bad esn.

If it's a CDMA carrier, you can flash it. If you want to try to get the phone to work with CDMA Workshop, hit Power+M, and I think it's BP tools. If it's GSM, follow the guide in the development section.

Yes

Yeah, it's a CDMA carrier, but no sim card. Can i flash it myself, or do i need the store to flash it? Do i have to pay an "unlock fee" if i root the phone?
I will check out CDMA Workshop and Power+M, i am unfamiliar with these two programs.
Thanks for the replies!

If you look up how to flash the DROID 3 to Cricket on their forums there is a nice write up.

Revol, Cricket, Metro or any Sprint MVNO. Beigephone dot com can do the flash if you are not familiar with process of donor flashing.

Can I "unlock" the HTC T-Mobile G1 and use in Europe?

Hi folks. I'm visiting from the CDMA Hero section. My friend has G1 he doesn't need and I want to buy it off him it it can be unlocked and used in Europe (Barcelona and Paris) with something like a prepaid SIM card. As I mentioned, I'm visiting from the CDMA forum-- I've never had a GSM phone and don't know a thing about unlocking.
I've searched the stickied threads and general forum but nothing stood out. This possible? Worth it? I'm no stranger to custom roms or Android.
Please advise. Thanks.
It's possible and very easy, somebody just needs to call T-mobile and request an unlock code. Usually they send it within a week. Please note that you will not get 3G in Europe (99% sure) as they use different frequencies. You will still get the edge network.
It's up to you to decide if it's worth it.
BTW, canadian Dream should do just fine in Europe with 3G (once more, 99% sure)
Good luck.
thanks. that was painless.

Can D3 and activate on pageplus?? and where can i get the phone with no contract?

Can D3 and activate on pageplus?? and where can i get the phone with no contract?
i think verizon offers $459 and amazon offers $549~ but how can i buy the phone with $459 price?
and can i return it if i cant get activated on pageplus
You need a verizon account to purchase the phone, or find a friend that does. The d3 should work on pageplus as its not a new 4glte device that requires a sim to activate, uses an old school *228 activation

what does that mean??
If I buy the phone from Amazon wireless will it be unlocked, that is, can it work anywhere in the world on any GSM provider's SIM?
A proper answer would be much appreciated.
I seriously wanna buy this phone and I am willing to pay the $550 price at Amazon wireless, if and only if, the phone is unlocked.
Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the D3 isn't a GSM phone. I'm pretty sure its only a global cdma

The Droid 3 is a GSM and CDMA handset, it is mentioned in the verizon manual for this handset that a sim card can be inserted, currently it is suspected however that this is sim locked.

Go to the Global Phone section in this PDF and it is mentioned
It is a global phone that supports GSM networks. Arguing over it won't help us much. What will help is an answer to which version of the phone is unlocked for all GSM networks.
Its is a GSM global phone, includes a Verizon SIM that is locked. Verizon customers in good standing can get the phone unlocked with a call to Verizon Global support.

Hmmm....yes, but the question here is whether the phones with no contract are also SIM locked or not.
hi guys, can anyone answer my question
So, here's the response I got from the Amazonwireless guys:
{I'm very sorry but the replacement phones (phone only no service) on Amazonwireless are locked to the carriers. You would need to find an unlocked phone.
There are basically two types of unlocked phones. CDMA Unlocked and GSM Unlocked.
An Unlocked CDMA phone will basically work with carriers like Verizon, Alltel, and Sprint. Unlocked GSM phones work with carriers such as AT&T and T-Mobile.
Unlocked cell phones are designed to work with any carrier that uses SIM cards. Some advanced features may not work depending on the carrier you are using. I would recommend contacting the carrier you are going to be using to ask if the phone you are interested in will work with their network, and if there are any features that you would not be able to use.
If you would like to shop for an unlocked cell phone please visit Amazon.com using the link below
www(dot)amazon(dot)com/cellphones
I hope this information helps. We look forward to seeing you again soon.}
Thomaslau it means that this phone still needs to be activated using *228 which pageplus accepts. 4gLTE phones do not use *228, they use a sim card to activate

so it will works???
What my understanding is with CDMA is that it's ALWAYS unlocked. The problem lies with carriers not allowing foreign ECID/IMEI's on their network database which allows the phones to work.
Should work flawless

ok, now i got my droid 3, but i struck at the activation menu, the one with the android robot. what should i do to activate my phone on pageplus?? do i need to activate my phone on verizon then pageplus?
I thought with pageplus you call them, give them the esn from the back of the phone, starts with a000000, then dial *228 when they tell you to

thx, i will try it

Ummm , Anyone knows how to unlock the Android Milestone (1) ?

Not like unlock as in Password unlock, I mean as,
I need to change my phone provider from Verizon to AT&T.
My phone is a Android Milestone (1) and it recently recovered from a bootloop.
More on the information of the bootloop, here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...8#post31092838
I'm wondering if anyone can help me? I'm not sure if that's in anyone's expertise but i'm asking anyway. ^-^
If the phone was on Verizon originally, it is a Motorola Droid (A855), not a Milestone (A853 or A854). That also means it uses a CDMA radio and will not work on ATT which uses GSM.

These statements create conflict in my brain. There is no Milestone on Verizon.
Beyond that discrepancy, there is no way to get a CDMA phone onto a GSM network. Wikipedia is your friend.
Good luck!

Verzion Droid Bionic on another network

My friend is offering me a free working Verizon Droid Bionic. My question is can I possible use it on TMobile's Network. It uses a SIM card and that seems to mean that it works with Tmobile networks
As a Sidenote: I need to figure out how to root and install Cyanogenmod onto the phone as well.
Yes
Keep searching these forums, there's a thread outlining a process where you use Radiocomm to unlock the chipset so that this phone can work on Tmobile. I've used this method to use my BIONIC on a Canadian network.

[Q] Questions about Sprint Unlocking

So I see there is a thread about unlocking your phone in these forums but that says its a GSM unlock. I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to unlocking phones but I know I want to use my sprint M8 on Verizon since I'm switching services.
So my question is, is there any way to unlock my phone to work on the Verizon network? Is that unlocking method make it work on Verizon or just ATT?
Sorry but I am extremely ignorant on the subject and am looking for some info, rather not rebuy my one.

Hi, extremely sorry that no one took the time to respond to this sooner. I believe there is 2 methods to do this, one being a SIM unlock and another being the GSM unlock you mentioned above. To my knowledge GSM unlock is what you want but sadly I don't think there is any 'free' way of doing this. I've never personally GSM unlocked one of my own phones but I have helped a friend do so. Anyways in order to GSM unlock a phone you need a special 'generated' (i think generated) code to input in your phone which will unlock it and allow it to use other carriers besides the one it was made for.
Here is a presumably valid tutorial on how to do this on an HTC One M8.
I would recommend trying freeunlocks.com first, only because I have a coupon from there which i'll gladly give you if you plan on using it. Only reason I have one and or am giving it away is because previously I bought one from there and they didn't have a code at the time so they refunded me and gave me a coupon code to enter if I ever purchased from them again which I most likely won't as I have no need for GSM unlocking, i.e why i'm giving it away. If by some chance freeunlocks does not work then you can try the one in the video or you can look for others.
If you would like to try this and want the coupon for freeunlocks.com then just say so in your response and I'll PM you it. I think its for either a discount or a free code, I don't really remember as this was quite a while ago when I was given it. (around a year)
Goodluck!
I'm just not sure if this would work because I'm trying to go from sprint to verizon, both being CDMA. If I did this would it mean I have to go to ATT?

I don't think so, according to this it should have all the proper bands to support both Sprint & Verizon. On the off hand there is always the chance that this link I just sent is ONLY for the International model and I am wrong which I very well could be. I've had trouble truly understanding if all versions of phones have support for the same bands or if they don't. I'd recommend researching this a bit or waiting until someone else comes along with the proper knowledge to assist you in your question on the radio bands comes along.
Anyways LS;DR, It should work but I may be wrong so do your own research or wait for someone else with the proper knowledge to assist you to come along.
