Nexus 7 or GT 2 7.0? - Nexus 7 General

hey guys, need a little advice here.
I spontaneously bought the Tab 2 7.0 for Black Friday, but I've been looking at the Nexus 7 for a while now. What should I choose?
I like the touchwiz features but the cleanness of stock android. I use my tablet for: music, facebook, instagram, games, memos, reading, watching netflix. Is it worth the extra $40? (Tab was $160 for me)
Thanks

Go with the Nexus 7, you won't regret it.

Yes yes yes yes. The extra $40 is well worth the cost of N7, & the speed/upgradability is much better on the N7.

get the nexus unless you MUST HAVE tv out.. for 13.00 you can get hdmi dock for gtab...the g tab also has the ir remote dual cameras and sd card slot. thou no ap/to sd .
Ours has 8 gb its slower then nexus but runs ok... My spouse Bonnie Loves the Ir blaster remote .But i hear it only works with some cable companies .Ours its great..
The nexus is twice as fast 16 or 32 gb storage (32 gb is what mine is). Its well worth the extra money ...
you decide...

I love the touch wiz stuff but I have the SGS3 so I get my fix there so I opted for the nexus. I will say this the WiFi tab2 is getting Jellybean right now so if you like the tab that will def be a nice addition. Also weigh the no SD/SD card situation to me for what I use my tablet for its not important as I use alot of cloud. To other's it could be important.

Had a GTab 2 7" before switching to a Nexus 7 and couldn't be happier after switching.

Have you seen the specs on the gtab? They suck hard... :-/ get the N7

N7 is worlds better overall in specs and support.
-Brought to you by Marino's Nexus 7-

Just keep the galaxy tab and install cm10 on it. Its officially supported and its essentially a WiFi galaxy nexus hardware wise and has the very dev friendly omap soc.

If you were only going tu use it for media consumption I'd say stick with the GTab but since you also want to do gaming I'd recommend you spend the extra $40 and get pretty much the top of the line (at 7 inches). Actually if possible you should spend $90 and get a 32gig because graphic intensive games will kick the **** out of your 16gig really fast.

Nexus 7 ahoo.

I too was considering N7 and Tab 2 7.0. I was looking for a used one on CL. I actually wanted the Tab 2 more than the N7 due to the expandable memory and lower cost. However, long story short, I got the N7 and have no regret because I don't miss what I never had (what I never had being the Tab 2). I'm sure I'll work something out to overcome the lack of expandable memory.

Also, you're gonna get a lot of biased answers here because you're asking the question in the N7 forum.

I think they are both brilliant devices for the money. I had the original galaxy tab when it first came out and loved it. I really do think Samsung make some top quality hardware. I have a nexus 7 now and I do love stock android, I also went for the 32gb model for £199 so that will more than accommodate my storage needs.
I have a galaxy s3 for my Samsung fix so that's why I ended up choosing the nexus 7.
I'd stick with what you have for now mate and get your moneys worth. Something new is bound to emerge after Christmas and then you will probably puck a nexus 7 up for peanuts.

Let's say this... I had the OG Tab 7,and it never got updated past Froyo. Samsung abandoned it.
The Nexus 7 is sure to get multiple updates straight from Google as soon as they come out.

If you keep the tab 2 7.0, you are probably going to have to root it and put aokp 5 on it. Stock is a little slow. And someone stated that the tab 2 7.0 had TV out, I don't believe that it does. I have had it since launch day.

I am a big Samsung Galaxy fan! Having said that I wanted to have one Nexus Device to have the stock Android and quick updates. The Nexus 7 is that device for me once Google came out with the 32GB! So far it is working well for me!

Hdmi dock from amazon is 13.00... We have one for my spouses tab2.7 . she uses the dock for charging next to our bed. She loves the tab because of the peel remote.. I just installed jelly bean 4.1.2 on it a few days ago.
Its a ok tablet for most things you would want such as surfing the web and simple games and social networking.
I do love my nexus 7 32 gb.. now have it dual booting with linux stock 4.2 and i have a 3rd book i can try and flash new roms without flashing my everyday use stuff..
In my opinion the tab 2.7 is better built then the nexus 7 but runs at a slower clock speed.. If there was a 7 in ch version of the note . i would be in love .. mybe some techno lust..

Love N7 so much

Is something wrong with me for wanting a Nexus 7?

Perhaps someone can help me but I seem to have this quest for any shiny new tablet, I have had several Tablet from the Archos 70, HTC FLyer through to Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 to 10.1" and have kept them from couple of weeks to few months before the novelty wears out, but I just could not resist the nexus when it was announced that I had to pre-order 2!! just in-case.
I keep asking myself if I really need one and I am trying to find a use/excuse for one... nonetheless I ll still buy one if only to root and install ad-blocker so that I can play Angry Bird Ad Free!!!.
Buy the Nexus 7 to run the Eliza Android app. (google it)
It will help analyze why you have this abnormal fixation with shiny new gadgets.
Good luck on finding a cure!
Well to me if you did not like or did not have a use for the Galaxy Tab 7 the Nexus 7 will be the same aside from the better processor.
But only time will tell really as we cant really tell you what YOU will like
what makes you turn away from the tablets your buy? Is it that your phone is so much easier to use or is it that bezel :silly:
If you have the disposable income and it's not hurting anything then why worry about it? I've had the iPad 1, iPad 2, Nook Color, Nook Tablet, Nook Touch, Galaxy Tab 7+, and the Galaxy Tab 8.9. I end up either reselling them or giving them away when I'm done with them, and I pre-ordered the Nexus 7 without any hesitation.
Yes there is something wrong with you, and for you to post here you must be conscious of that matter...to feel normal I recommend you give the one to me so we can form a circle of gadget addicts lol

I've got a 32GB iPad 2 and I'm considering selling it and buying a Nexus 7. By the time I've bought the N7 and paid shipping, I wouldn't have much cash left from what my iPad sold for.

If you do not mind relying on cloud storage, or mainly stream media, read books and browse the Web, the N7 is solid. I will stick with the View 32gb with a 64gb card, since still a nice tab.
I have the TF300 too, so less compelled. Must admit I would have bought one though if had micro sd.

$200 for a wifi tab with only 8gb.I can justify the no camera, the no LTE or even
HSPA+, the 7" form factor, and the no super ips I really want one. But the no SD is a deal breaker and seriously, **** Tegra. I want a quad core krait or even an exynos. And Google's developer device gunning for the kindle fire is a quiet acknowledgment that iPad owns the 10" segment.
I have a 15 " MacBook pro (for school) my old laptop running Windows 8 just for fun, then I have a Asus transformer tf101 with dock for portable productivity, Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7" , and Samsung Galaxy s II . I will probably sell the 7"Samsung since its only dual core and has the 10" tablet UI which really is not great on a smaller tablet. So I am really excited about the "hybrid UI" as Google called on the nexus 7.
Sent from my GT-P3113 using XDA Premium HD app
What the OS needs is a TON of installed user base, so that developers get rewarded for the time, in a way close to the iOS. Selling a lot of quad core systems for $199 will hopefully show numbers of installed base that wake some people up. If it sells as well as it should, your going to want a Tegra3 device at that resolution because that is what everything will target.
For example, I saw a post that one of the game dev's who have ignored TFP compatibility is now saying they will be developing for the N7.
I expect my TFP 201 to benefit somewhat from the sales numbers this should do, given the hardware is basically the same. Also given ASUS made the thing, I would imagine getting JB faster than most on the prime will be a near sure thing.

How many Galaxy Nexus owners bought a Nexus 7?

Not sure if I have buyer's remorse, but the Nexus 7 seems a little redundant to have if I already own a Galaxy Nexus. Considering the screen size is only 2" bigger, not really sure how much I'm gaining.
I already have a Touchpad, so that only adds to the redundancy...
I would have said you are truly blessed...
The Nexus for tethering, and the Nexus 7 for a far better reading / movie experience, not to mention web browsing.
When you get your tablet, come back and let us know how you like the pair.
I've already got a Galaxy Nexus, a Transformer Prime, and a Nook Color. Talk about redundancy, lol.
I wasn't planning on getting the Nexus 7, but the Nook Color just isn't doing it for me as a carputer anymore, so I'm giving it the boot in favor of the 7. Should be fun.

Me too. Should be good. Haha. I'd be even more happy if it was a 10" tab.
I'm pretty excited about both devices having NFC. I'm planning on setting up my GNex & N7 so that I just get in my car and bump them together to get everything ready to go:
- Enable hotspot on the phone
- Turn on WiFi on the tablet
- Turn on bluetooth on the tablet (for connection to car stereo, torque, etc)
- Launch Torque on the tablet
- etc.
There are probably apps that could do all this, but I think I might build something small and lightweight myself just to play around with NFC.

Nexus 7 vs Galaxy s3

From your point of view does it make any sense to you buying a nexus 7 when you already own a Galaxy s3 since it is already that big? Wonder whether it makes that much of a difference after all.
Looking forward to what you are thinking about that!
Thanks!
i dont understand??? the gs3 is half the size of the N7...one is a phone the other a tab...N7 is pure google gs3 is samsung ui...
what are you trying to do with this thread???
If I had an S3 or or a Galaxy Nexus I probably wouldn't have gone for the N7. And now I have an N7, I am not bothering updating my old phone just yet.
I just wouldn't bother having 2 devices that do almost all the same things but people have different feelings and different needs.
But I have never really understood the device vs device thing anyway and too many people seem too concerned with what devices other people choose.
If you are happy with your choice, what does it matter?
I'm actually considering a smaller screen phone for my next phone. Simply because I do have the N7 and probably will always have a tablet with or near me...

Nexus 7 and iPhone 5
OR
Galaxy S3 and iPad 4 or new Mini 8 inch iPad tablet (no Retina display)
Both combos have pluses minuses, I love the Tegra 3 THD games although you can find the apk files they still stutter a bit.
I own the Galaxy Nexus and the Nexus 7 and almost never use my Galaxy Nexus unless I'm out and about because the N7 is just so much nicer to use. Still happy I have both though as Verizon 4G is great for tethering.

What he said.
I have an SGS3 that goes everywhere I go and my Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 goes most places as well. My wife does the same with her i4 and N7 as does our son with his phone & Nook Color (CM9).
All of the devices have their place and I would not readily replace any of the phones with any of the tablets or vice-versa. I/we don't (yet) have a larger tablet but if there were, say, a 13" device, I could easily see it (with Bluetooth keyboard & track pad) replacing a general-purpose laptop.

Galaxy S3 is not that big.
How comfortable is it to read from the S3? Because N7 functions quite well as a reader. But if you're already ok with it, maybe there isn't much point after all.
I have sgs3, and thinking to buy N7. Would someone with both devices be so kind to take few photos and put it here, as reference. Of course, few words of experience with those devices is welcome.

Even owning a Note (as a tablet too small, as a phone too big?) wasn't enough, my SGS3 is a hefty screen "phone". But the N7 is still a right size tablet device for me.
I can't read, enjoy XDA/forums, watch movies/anime on the SGS3's comparatively "small" screen.
IMO YMMV,
-CC
I have both and both are great devices. For games nexus 7 screen size is great as well as for browsing the screen size is better than S3. S3 looks big when you don't have Nexus 7. To be honest the difference of screen size between a note and S3 is a lot of difference although on paper looks small and Nexus 7 is even more bigger and ideal size to hold and type in two hands. What S3 lacks is jelly bean and if you don't own a nexus 7 then you don't know how good jelly bean is as compared to ICS. Since I bought the nexus 7 my S3 and iPad 3 both are just sitting on table collecting dust. These days I am caring S3 whenever I go out of house just because it is phone not because it is S3.
Rest is up to you that what you want from your device. Both devices are very different and there is no comparison. Believe me 4.8 inch screen is not that big in front of bigger devices. Once you get N7 you would probably forget about your S3

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 or Asus Nexus 7

Hey guys. I was interested in getting your opinions on a plan of mine. I've had a Galaxy Tab 10.1 for a year now and I use it mostly for content consumption, browsing during flights, etc. I haven't really used it to watch movies, mostly just read articles on Pulse. Now on Ebay, I could definitely get at least 200 dollars for my tablet, most likely 250-300. My question is, do you think it's a good idea to sell my tab and buy the nexus 7? I currently have a Galaxy Nexus on Verizon that's rooted because Verizon takes too long to update, but If I got a Nexus 7, I'm not sure if I would even root it, because it is an official AOSP device. Also, do you think the transition to a smaller screen size will really affect me? Please let me know what you guys think. Thanks
P.S: I need to either make a net gain or break even, so please don't suggest tablets that are more than 350 bucks.
Yes, buy a nexus 7.

I had a Transformer Prime with a 10.1 inch screen before I returned it for a Nexus 7. I actually prefer the 7 inch screen as opposed to the 10.1 inch one. I don't know how good your user experience has been with the Galaxy Tab, but I really did not like my Transformer that much. I love my Nexus 7 and think it is definitely the best tablet choice right now.

I've a Galaxy Tab 8.9, Sony Tablet S and the awesome piece of gadgetry that is the Nexus 7. I haven't touched my other Tablets since I got the 7. Infact, the Sony Tablet S is now, along with it's cradle, nothing but an alarm clock and storage device (thanks to 64gb storage) for me. The nexus outperforms my sisters iPad 2 too. I do however think you should root it anyway. I rooted mine as soon as I unboxed it, the Nexus 7 Toolkit is extremely simple. Some of the kernels people have created are outstanding, definitely worth the root.

Want advice.... upgrade to which tablet? Nexus 7? Galaxy Tab2?

I am selling my T-mobile Galaxy Tab (the original) to a coworker.
The original plan was to buy a Nexus 7, but after reading about it I learned that it:
1. Doesn't have a rear camera
2. Doesn't have TV-out
3. Doesn't hardware decode DivX/mkv
So now I am torn between the Galaxy Tab 2 7" and the Nexus 7.
My problems with the Galaxy Tab 2 7" are:
1. It doesn't have as nice a resolution/screen
2. Proprietary connector
The TV out is what really bugs me....but I am not sure if Tab to Tab 2 is a big enough jump
Anyone have any advice?
nook color
After spending far too much on far too man devices;
Tab7
Nexus7
Nexus1
Transformer
Note II
Nook Color
Nook Simple
HPTouchpad
The most useful I've found is STILL the original Tab7 once CM10 put on it (well Humberos's rom to make it TabletUI).
Ok, the newer games aren't available, but for day to day actual using it, the apps/flexibility/sd-card storage/camera, it's been hard to beat.
Perhaps the Nexus7 for tablet/gaming, and a reasonable phone that'll let you bluetooth tether? One with a decent camera in?
If tv out and a rear camera are crucial to you, then get the Tab.
But performance wise the N7 is leaps ahead, the Tegra processor is gritty like a Corvette

The New Nexus 7 or Nexus 10
I too was torn between getting the nexus 7 or galaxy tab 2 I ended up going with the nexus and have no regrets.this thing is awesome. Screen is amazing, the ability to use it as a phone,I text and call my using my nexus all the time.plus with usb otg, storage is not an issue. My g2x has the ability to hdmi out to the tv so watching content via android device to tv is not an issue for me. And it's freaking fast!!

The Nexus 7 might lack a couple of things but do remember that it comes at a great price and it's hardware is pretty awesome! I'd take a Nexus 7 anyday! Direct updates from Google and runs any game and app you want it to? Phew! Yes please xD
After 3 days I gave my brand new Nexus 7 to the girlfriend and went back to my SGT7.
Thanks to XDA and Stimpz0r, I just don't need new hardware.

I was facing a similar dilemma when deciding on a 7" replacement for my trusty SGT7. To cut the long story short, my eventual decision was the iPad mini. Before you guys commence the flaming, allow me to list down my considerations.
1) Rear Camera
I work in an environment that prohibits camera phones. As such, my primary device (phone) is not equipped with any cameras and it is therefore important for me that my secondary device (tablet) comes with a decent camera, since it would be my only camera on the go. Of the current crop of 7 inchers, the Nexus 7, Nooks and Kindles all fail to hit this mark. The Galaxy Tab 2 has a reasonably decent rear camera so that stayed in contention. As for the iPad mini, its rear camera is probably the best of the lot and that factored heavily in my consideration.
2) Official Software Updates
Frankly, I'm still rather miffed with Samsung's poor software updates for the SGT7. Cutting official major software updates for a one year old device does not inspire much confidence in their subsequent products. Apple, on the other hand, continue to offer major software updates for their products in the 2nd and even 3rd year of their lifecycle (case in point: the iPad 2 and iPhone 3GS). The Nexus 7 would have been my go to device on the Android platform, since I'm confident that Google will continue to support the device for years to come, but alas, it doesn't meet my requirement for rear camera.
3) Proprietary Connectors
Both Samsung and Apple have their own proprietary connectors. However, only Samsung's connector is a constant source of frustration for me. I cannot fathom why the SGT7 does not charge with generic usb chargers, without a 3rd party adapter. I was on an overseas trip recently and it skipped my mind to bring along the adapter. As a result, I had no means to charge my SGT7 throughout the entire trip using the usb charger in the rented vehicle. The same usb charger could charge an iPad with no problems. Moreover, there are plenty of 3rd party products that support Apple's connector (e.g. radio docks, external power banks, etc) but I've not seen a single one that supports Samsung's.
Of course, the iPad mini's dated guts and last gen screen leaves it trailing the competition, but the smooth user experience and arsenal of tablet optimized apps still outweighs the negatives for me. Best of all, I could still hold on to the SGT7 for some Android love as long as it doesn't die on me.
Similar position here. Decided to go with the N7. I can live without the rear camera, and I will also get much better hardware overall compared with the Tab2. Seriously, I used the Tab in store and it lags so much. Neuxs 7 just flies.

I ended up buying a 32GB Nexus 7. MX Player Pro is a decent substitute for all of the native playback options that the Galaxy Tab comes with.... but it is REALLY nice not having to lug around and keep track of my one data cable.
Also, i pushed 4.2 on there via adb sideload yesterday.
yup, yup.
i agree, the SGT7 its a all in one device, movies, tv out, apps + gaming in HD, calling, texting, social networking, skyping for free + video chatting, google internet, and the icing on the cake for me is once i got rid of tmobiles security page my device runs like a regulare phone, so all i pay is $30 a month (us) for unlimited 4g internet, unlimited texting, and 100mnts talk. So i just opened a skype account and pay $18 every 3 months for unlimited talk. So the galaxy tab 7 running cm10 is super fast for me on tmobiles 4g network. Its a no brainer.. lol.. hope this helps... my regards to all, especially all the great DEVS out there keeping our P1000 still ahead of the game ..!!!!!

I would certainly go ahead and pick Nexus 7 because of the hardware and the price its the next gen with a low price tag. Yes I admit. The back camera might be an essential to some but not to all. And the galaxy tab 2 camera is not that "outstanding" either. You could save up and buy a dslr or something.

If I had to choose, I would pick the N7 (that's what I already did). But my sons P100 has CM10 which makes it more directly comparable to the N7 and outside of 3D gaming, there isn't much of a difference speed wise.
Considering the N7 came out a while ago... I would assume they would be releasing another 7" tablet within a few months. The 7" tablet has been their most successful and they have the upper hand on Apple for a while. If Google can keep the lead and stay ahead of the ipad Mini, it'll constantly be a good success.
That said, if you can make due with the GTab a few more months, you'll likely see a new Google 7" tab with the faster S4 snapdragon and a higher resolution screen.

Galaxy Tab 2 7" and 10.1" can be bought for under £150 now. Its a steal. However, no 3G version though, if you could love without that.
Worth a sacrifice though, looking at the amazing price.
