[Q] Rogers stock Froyo to ICS. Some questions?

I've currently got Rogers stock 2.2 Froyo running on my i896. I rooted it and replaced the 3e recovery with the modified recovery so I can run CWM Recovery on it. I also unlocked the phone by modifying the nv_data.bin file.
Now I want to upgrade to ICSSGS. A few questions:
1) Should I first upgrade using Kies to Rogers 2.3.3? What ill effects, if any, will that have to my 3e recovery, my nv_data.bin unlock, and the root?
2) What system files should be backed up before upgrading to ICS custom ROM? EFS files, etc?
3) Is it possible to go straight from Froyo to ICS? The ICSSGS installation instructions mention requiring Gingerbread.

Don't bother with kies.
No need to go to gingerbread first, and going to stock gingerbread will undo you're 3e replacement and root.
just flash ics from froyo.
It's always recommended to have multiple backups of your /efs folder in several locations.

I've read that people have a lot better results if they go to cm7 first, then go upgrade to ics. Since almost everything is based on team hacksung.(Cm9 I would go to that ics first.

Why would that be though? Any logical explanation to that theory?

Well my guess is that because cyanogen has done cm7 so well and stable. most ics builds are based on their work with cm9. It's kind of just a natural progression.
I've also read some dev's suggest doing it this way.
Also I did it this way and have had almost none of the problems that other people have.
I've never had a sleep, or charge death. Never had the data data bug. Never had the data signal bar always full bug.

Interesting, thanks for sharing your experience. I might go ahead and try flashing CM7 first and then one of the ICS custom roms.

actually it used to be part of the instructions to flash CM7 first.
CM7 CM9 and ICS use a different partitioning table and call partitions by different names, CM7 used to be the only one, and has a conversion script.
now most of the more popular ICS base roms include the conversion script.
read the instructions for each ICS you look at.
some have no requirements but CWM, some require flashing CM7 or any other ICS rom first.
coming from pure stock froyo you want to flash a CWM3 kernel with odin, then reboot to recovery and flash the ICS rom off your sdcard.

I want to ask about a perfect ROM based on official.
I had Xperia Neo before this one and theres a very very good ROM for xperias
by the name of SE.Tweaked.
it's absolutly the official ROM that excess app and sys app are removed on it.
is there any thing like that for note that deliver a speed and costumization ability beside that every thing working perfectly on it(pen and ...)

For custom GB roms, I have tried Rocket rom and the newer Litening rom. In my opinion, both are great and definitely worth considering.

For the GB, I have tried DarkyRom, ChrackRom, CheckRom, Cassie's XtraLiteRom, and Litening Rom. I found them very comparable in performance and battery life. For ChrackRom you have option to install a full, small, and extra small rom. I am using Litening Rom right now. I might go back to ICS Stunner rom, I like the Stunner rom except that it is not as stable as the GB roms in my SGN.

I really like ICS Stunner too, but you might want to exercise caution using that or any other ICS LP5/LP6 leak based ROMS until an issue with potentially hardbricking your phone during flashing is resolved.
If you're interested, there's a still experimental (but as far as hardbricking safer) ICS CM9 build that's really cool over here:

Hiya there ! I'll seize this opportunity to avoid creating a post of my own then ! I'm like Arasl, though i bought my GNote in february and i'm still running a non-root, stock ROM because i'm sort of "afraid of flashing".
First, i've never done it before, and since i'm a Linux user i've been searching for ways to do it through linux instead of the Odin/windows method but i'm now pretty much resigned to use Odin (seems simpler, methods actually do exist and there's more feedback, though any hint towards linux-oriented methods would be great).
I've restrained myself from flashing ever since i saw the brick-related posts from ICS Stunner ROM and i do NOT want to flash that ROM.
My questions are then following :
1) Is it possible to ROOT the phone without flashing on Kernel version 2.6.35.7 - N7000XXLC1 ?
2) If it is unsafe to flash ICS-based ROMs, is it 100% safe to flash gingerbread-based custom ROMs or is there still an important risk of bricking the phone?
I can imagine most people will answer yes to the previous question and in that case, which ROM would you advise that is both light (and smooth, since the stock ROM is a little laggy on the edges) and the most battery-saving?
Thanks for any hints to existing posts, i've been looking around but i just don't have the time to read the hundreds of pages of custom stock roms to compare them all by myself ;-)

Just use the latest cm9. Very safe and beautiful. If you need the spen functionality then use gb..

If by any means you are ready to work on windows, i would gladly help you in all these...although in a RISK on anything happens on completely you only.
I, too as being flasholhoic, flashed almost every ROM here in the development section both GB and ICS, every kernel, so i will try my best to avoid any risk but god-only-knows-the-best. As per your question,
1. Yes you can root your stock rom without flashing on Kernel version 2.6.35.7 - N7000XXLC1, Go here and select the right kernel and follow the procedure.
2. Official CM9 is the only (yet most) safest ICS build here, the rest being suffered by the ultimate phenomenal hardbrick bug. And yes its safe to flash any GB rom until you are switching it from GB to GB rom only.
The most important thing, take enough time to read read and read (even query) the instruction before flashing anything, or else you can have ample amount to time to read anything with coffee placed on your new bricked note. Choice is yours.

Are these issues resolved somehow? I'm sitting on ICS Stunner ROM and I'm afraid to do anything serious with my phone.
Shouldn't there be fixes when Samsung released official AOSP source of Notes' ICS?
Or am I missing something? I really want to do a completely clean install of some ROM, because my current ROM (the newest version of Stunner) works terribly, forcecloses, slugish, freezing all the time.
Can the behavior of my phone have something to do with the problem discussed in the thread I linked? (I don't understand anything in that thread )

The issues regarding superbrick arent completely resolved. But there are Kernels for ICS wich contain a workaround. And so far noone has reported bricking with them.
It seems like the official kernel source from sammy still contained that bug. But now it has been bypassed. Still noone is completely sure yet that they are 100% safewhen it comes to wiping etc.

There is also a workaround to repartition the data section effectively bypassing any damaged areas for anyone that has a brick and no warranty.
This of course reduces the data partitions size, and it's still pot luck as to how much damage would occur.
It's also a pretty tricky operation.

Probably worth flashing stock ics ROM, with a custom kernel that's safe. Probably best to do it in mobile Odin. Make sure you extract the firmware file and only select ROM partition, then separately point to kernel.

I think its better to be in Stock rom what we got and never do any experiment, instead of wasting time on it to get very little stuff with high risk.
even if some work around solution is there, its very hard to understand and not all will be doing that.

I totally agree. Wait for safe ics kernels or use modified Cm9's for now.

Or are all those franco/abbyss kernels also considered relatively safe?

No you cant use Cm9 kernels with stock rom. If you flash a stock rom you get a stock kernel included

No, either use a GB kernel or use Franco's #3+, or SpeedMod K3-3, CF's ICS kernels are NOT safe.

[Q] Time for a new ROM - noob questions...

Ok, so my P1000 (stock Gingerbread, bought SIM-freeon and currently on Vodafone UK) has become soooo slow over the past two years of ownership, and a minor water contact today forced a factory reset... So a clean JPZ based Tab to play with...
Been toying with the idea (in hope for better performance) to get a custom ROM from here, maybe one based on ICS (if the hardware can take it), but after a couple of days of reading through all the posts and threads, I confess I am at a complete loss: can anyone recommend a stable working ROM (even if essentially based on stock images) that could/should improve the tired tab's performance? Also, not clear: do most ROMs here come with rooting or do I then need to apply CFRoot separately? Lastly, at the time of my last post (way way back), Overcome ROMs seemed to be the way to go, but today their site is down?
Please be gentle, though I understand the basics, I am indeed a novice in this arena

Great, many thanks, downloading now... As a follow up, I understand this is their version of 2.3.6 (Gingerbread); don't want to be a , but was wondering if there's an ICS ROM out there for the P1000? Also, is overclocking possible on the Overcome ROM? (the idea is to try and get a device that actually runs better than stock GB, so not even sure if the hardware is up to speed with ICS)

There are AOSP based ICS/JB
Just look for them in dev section.
Either CM or AOKP.
You still need overcome kernel to have cwm first in order to flash them.
kernel, not ROM, OK?
Overcome should be overclockable.

There is a relly good CM10 (JB) ROM I'm using: sapir-rom.blogspot.com It's nightly, but it works perfectly for me with very good performance.

Noob here, only installed 1 or 2 ROM's in the past, but I would now like a hand deciding on a suitable ROM for my needs on my Galaxy Tab P1000 (UK/European)
I would like a ROM that is nice and responsive, has good battery life and is fairly customisable, and I guess most come already rooted? I would prefer it to be ICS or JB too I have looked about and seen a few CM10 ones, some MIUI ones and various others but I am lost for choice, I have no idea what ones are best.
I want everything to work (all wireless connections, camera etc...) don't mind things like auto brightness or similar as that isn't major. The main reason for wanting to change from the stock gingerbread is because I find it unresponsive and boring.
Sorry if this is in the wrong section, thought Q&A was my best bet.

Quick question,
For the MIUI v4 ICS ROM, which I like the look of alot, it needs a "restock" and install Overcome or a CM9 guide to be followed. (ROM link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1613842 )
However, do I still need to do this as I haven't already installed any custom ROM? If I do can you give me a feint idea how I can approach it? Or can I just wipe cache/data etc.. and install the ROM?
Sorry if I am being a pain, not had to do any of this before.

Many has your problem.
The thing is, newer ( well, post April 2012) ROM use new MTD layout, which need you to come from stock, or from same layout.
If your custom ROM were GB, no issue. They are stock BML partition, which the new rom can convert upon install.
If it were cm9 or 10, watch the mtd layout. The installer isn't made to convert older mtd to new mtd, so need restock.

Think I have got it, can someone please confirm my steps to make sure I am doing it right?
1. Flash latest CWM recovery using Odin
2. Make Nandroid backup using CWM
3. Flash GB-stock-safe, then flash Overcome kernel 4.0.0.tar using Odin for both (do I do these separately or is there a way to flash them together?)
4. Place MIUI v4 ROM and GApps etc.. on Tab's SD card.
5. Boot into recovery, wipe cache, wipe data and flash ROM.
6. Flash GApps and patch's etc...
7. Reboot into ROM
If it doesn't reboot into MIUI I need to reflash the ROM as the first flash converted my Tab to MTD? Is that correct?

Cwm is contained in kernel.
If you are willing to forgo backup, must start with GB stock safe v5
Then overcome kernel.
By then you have a cwm recovery.

Got it all installed/flashed last night. Went all ok and I worked out that the kernel included overcome cwm after reading a guide from the link in your Sig.
I suppose its good that I love the ROM too
