Couple of ROM questions

Hello, SGS newbie here (phone not actually arrived yet, will be here Monday).
I think the phone looks amazing, only thing I'm not mad on is the iPhone look and feel Samsung have gone for with the home screens, so I'm thinking of either customising it or putting a different ROM on the device. Cyanogen, Darky's and MIUI are the ones I've read about the most.
What is Darky's? Is it more or less a stock Android with LauncherPro, or is it more than that?
Edit: also wondering - is the Samsung Gingerbread ROM worth trying, does it solve some of the performance problems of earlier versions?

Everything is worth trying! If you want to skip the usual newbie routine, then jump straight ahead to an AOSP ROM like CM7 or MIUI... You won't regret it.

oh....and I expect your phone will come with GB installed any way...if not, depending on your supplier, Kies may offer you the firmware upgrade when you install it, and despite some reports (in my opinion) it represents a big improvement over 2.2 Froyo.
All the new custom roms are based on 2.3.3 gingerbread any way

Also pretty newbified here, but is it possible to get GB simply on a kernel flash and stay on stock rom, or will i have to flash a custom rom to do this. I have froyo 2.2 but speedmods kernel - pretty happy but would like to try out GB.

Just flash the JVH gingerbread with bootloaders.

Navigate to Ramad's stock rom thread, choice of stock 2.3.3 rom there, both odexed and deodexed

Cm7 is pretty much same as nexus s rom with lots of additions( theme manager,dsp,cyanogenmod settings,etc). You can also try sammy gb roms if you wish( flash with odin,there is guides about it just google) but you have to downgrade the bootloaders before you go back to cm7 ( I bet you will)

Thanks for the info folks. I guess I'll stay on the stock rom at least for a few weeks and get used to it although I reckon I'll use launcherpro with it as I don't like the samsung launcher.

[Q] Captivate decision: Stock Gingerbread or CM7

Hello all-
This is my first post here, so go easy on me
Well, I am Samsung captivate user on AT&T. I am currently running 2.2 rooted. My question: Should I upgrade to AT&T's gingerbread and try to root in there, or should I just pull the trigger and go to Cyanogenmod?
It seems rooting in 2.3 is not the simple SuperOneClick that it was for 2.2, and rooting with odin actually seems MORE complicated that flashing CM7 (And I guess more risky with multiple kernel flashes, yada yada yada). I am just thinking the less steps, the safer it probably is.
I am also liking all of the features of Cyanogenmod, epically the gesture app launching from the unlock screen.
In this How-to, the guy says to download the latest nightly build. Will it work the same if I choose the 7.1 stable release (I'm going for having whatever option I choose to be my daily use (I'm not gonna be flashing ROMs every month or week)):

What do you guys think?
PS I'm pretty sure you can, but using Titanium backup you can just "restore" all your apps just like that, correct?

If you are still on 2.2 you are way behind the curve.
There are some things you need to know. CM7 is a great ROM but is going to be replaced eventually by CM9 as everything is progressing towards Ice Cream Sandwich based ROMs. Gingerbread is an easy upgrade done through kies even with your rooted phone. It will flash the gingerbread bootloaders that are necessary to flash all gingerbread and some Ice Cream Sandwich based ROMs. Also, if you do choose to go to gingerbread, the kernel flashing process to root is very safe and very straight forward.
Lastly, I highly suggest getting away from a stock rom and flashing a custom ROM. It will make your phone feel like a new device compared to a stock ROM of any build. And yes, you can restore with Titanium Backup but remember to only restore the apps not the data.

Ive seen multiple guides for the stock gingerbread on captivate rooting.
Could you please point me towards the right one? I wanna make sure I dont try something outdated, wrong, ect.
Also, even if I choose to go to CM9 in the near future, should I still upgrade to the stock gingerbread right now and root? Will staying on 2.2 rooted make the CM9 flash easier ( I don't have clockworkmod recovery yet, if that matters ) or will having the 2.3 stock on it make the entire process easier?

From 2.2 Stock you can flash directly to CM9 without changing your boot loader to Gingerbread. That will put you straight to ICS 4.0.3. However your first step is to install CWM. But yes definitely get away from stock!

Cm9 as well as most all ice cream sandwich roms are still in beta phases so keep that in mind. If you absolutely have to have 100 percent reliability then a beta ROM is not for you.

+1 to everything they said in posts above.
The only thing I would add is that while the CM9 build is beta (alpha actually) it is VERY stable. Many folks, myself included, use it a our daily driver with no real issues.
In any event, by all means, get off of stock and onto CM. You'll love it.

Heres another thought, what is the chance that I will brick my phone, honestly, so bad it really stays just a brick?
I am just scared, as I have another 10 months till I could even consider a phone upgrade and I like the fancy android phone I have now!

If you follow the instructions then chances are pretty low. Just make sure to read and read again. Ask before you go too far. The safest way I say is to use kies to upgrade to gingerbread because that flashes the bootloaders for you. Then you can go anywhere you want from there. That is if you want to go the gingerbread route.

You will only get a true brick if you fail during a bootloader flash. Most other "bricks" aren't really bricks at all, and can be easily recovered if you can get into download or recovery, which is usually the case.

[Q] Perfect ROM

I'm A new G noter
I want to ask about a perfect ROM based on official.
I had Xperia Neo before this one and theres a very very good ROM for xperias
by the name of SE.Tweaked.
it's absolutly the official ROM that excess app and sys app are removed on it.
is there any thing like that for note that deliver a speed and costumization ability beside that every thing working perfectly on it(pen and ...)

For custom GB roms, I have tried Rocket rom and the newer Litening rom. In my opinion, both are great and definitely worth considering.

For the GB, I have tried DarkyRom, ChrackRom, CheckRom, Cassie's XtraLiteRom, and Litening Rom. I found them very comparable in performance and battery life. For ChrackRom you have option to install a full, small, and extra small rom. I am using Litening Rom right now. I might go back to ICS Stunner rom, I like the Stunner rom except that it is not as stable as the GB roms in my SGN.

I really like ICS Stunner too, but you might want to exercise caution using that or any other ICS LP5/LP6 leak based ROMS until an issue with potentially hardbricking your phone during flashing is resolved.

Hiya there ! I'll seize this opportunity to avoid creating a post of my own then ! I'm like Arasl, though i bought my GNote in february and i'm still running a non-root, stock ROM because i'm sort of "afraid of flashing".
First, i've never done it before, and since i'm a Linux user i've been searching for ways to do it through linux instead of the Odin/windows method but i'm now pretty much resigned to use Odin (seems simpler, methods actually do exist and there's more feedback, though any hint towards linux-oriented methods would be great).
I've restrained myself from flashing ever since i saw the brick-related posts from ICS Stunner ROM and i do NOT want to flash that ROM.
My questions are then following :
1) Is it possible to ROOT the phone without flashing on Kernel version 2.6.35.7 - N7000XXLC1 ?
2) If it is unsafe to flash ICS-based ROMs, is it 100% safe to flash gingerbread-based custom ROMs or is there still an important risk of bricking the phone?
I can imagine most people will answer yes to the previous question and in that case, which ROM would you advise that is both light (and smooth, since the stock ROM is a little laggy on the edges) and the most battery-saving?
Thanks for any hints to existing posts, i've been looking around but i just don't have the time to read the hundreds of pages of custom stock roms to compare them all by myself ;-)

Just use the latest cm9. Very safe and beautiful. If you need the spen functionality then use gb..

If by any means you are ready to work on windows, i would gladly help you in all these...although in a RISK on anything happens on completely you only.
I, too as being flasholhoic, flashed almost every ROM here in the development section both GB and ICS, every kernel, so i will try my best to avoid any risk but god-only-knows-the-best. As per your question,
1. Yes you can root your stock rom without flashing on Kernel version 2.6.35.7 - N7000XXLC1, Go here and select the right kernel and follow the procedure.
2. Official CM9 is the only (yet most) safest ICS build here, the rest being suffered by the ultimate phenomenal hardbrick bug. And yes its safe to flash any GB rom until you are switching it from GB to GB rom only.
The most important thing, take enough time to read read and read (even query) the instruction before flashing anything, or else you can have ample amount to time to read anything with coffee placed on your new bricked note. Choice is yours.

TAJB Flashing Procedure? (Have pity on the Noob)

Hi Everyone,
I've been following the Port of Jelly Bean to the SGS, and haven't read anything related to the question that I am posing here. I've been running TeamICSSGS's v4.2 Rom for month's now. I'm not one to flash a rom every week, my interest is just to keep my phone current in terms of software.
So the next step being to flash Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. My question is the following, if flashing from the rom stated above is there anything I have to be aware of? Or would it be as straight forward as flashing it without a hitch? I've read on the forums for instance that TAJB rom will use the ICS rom's baseband and not replace it.
Or would it be recommended to go to another ICS based rom and flash from it? Any pointers and advice would be highly appreciated.

I flashed TAJB from Slim ICS (4.0.4) + semaphore kernel after making a nandroid, tried TAJB rom than restored Slim ICS from nandroid.
It's still a test rom since it doesn't integrate GSM/data, so i guess you're going to flash it for the same aim, anyway no i don't think there should be any type of special rom/baseband to flash before going JB, just make a pair of nandroids (just in case) than follow the instructions in the thread (full wipe, flash, full wipe and fix permissions), it's quite simple.

Yes, going to be holding off until it's fully operational. My assumption was I wouldn't have any issues. But I like interacting with the community and learning from their lessons so I don't have to, especially the hard one's And we all know the addage: assumption is the mother of all...

[Q] SGN Rooted. Which ROM now?

Hey, Sorry for the Noob question but I rooted my Note a couple of days ago (Still a Newbie) and was wondering which ROMs would be best to flash now.
I've been using the rooted phone but I couldn't find much of a difference in performance or anything. Actually, I don't even know how or what to remove to increase performance and battery life.
So if you guys could just help me out with this it would be real Helpful!

Which ROM is the easiest to work with? Since I'm a newbie I have a whole lot of chance that I might just do something stupid and end up with a Hard-bricked phone.
Any help is appreciated..!

The first thing I'm going to ask you is, what is your current installed ROM? Stock GB or stock ICS?
If it's still in stock GB (2.3.6), I was using CheckRom Revo HD.

It gives you some customization while giving you a boost in your battery life. Please read and read on the appropriate forums here in xda on how to install and use this ROM (if you want to)
Now if you want to upgrade to ICS stock 4.0, then can upgrade your ROM thru the standard way, OTA or thru PC KIES. Either way, your phone gets updated with the official firmware and remains rooted still. You may want to check www.samfirmware.com for new official ICS firmware of your region.
On my personal note, I reckon ICS gives me much better life than when I was using GB. Don't forget to install the indispensable tools like Titanium backup so that you can freeze or uninstall samsung's bloatwares there by releasing some needed rams on your phone's memory and also increasing some juices on it.

Now, coming to the point. I am running Rooted Stock ICS 4.0.3 XXLP8.
Yes, I have installed Titanium Backup and have freezed some of the unusable Samsung applications which always kept running and slowed down my phone..!
I might flash GB for some custom ROM but I would prefer keeping it on ICS cause flashing GB and then some ROM would put me at a higher risk of bricking the phone.
Could you suggest some ICS based ROMs which might be easy for a first timer to handle?
I can flash other ROMs later when I am confident enough not to brick my phone.

Well, sorry to break your bubble bud but I'm not an ardent fan of custom ICS ROMS. I prefer the stock one for now. Personally Touchwiz ain't that bad (in my opinion).
Since your still using 4.0.3, try to just consider upgrading it to 4.0.4. By the way I am already on 4.0.4.
There are tons of stock firmwares for 4.0.4, depending on where your from. Try to use a kernel that's pretty much close to stock itself. I'm currently using SpeedMod v3.9 for now and I must say, From the stock kernel that I was using before (CF root LRG 4.0.4), the battery life on my phone have increased tremendously.
Now if you really still want to try out some other custom ROMS, you can try to read and read on this development thread here or get some reviews from other users as well.

I don't think 4.0.4 is out in India yet (It wasn't there the last time I checked). I'll still keep checking in from time to time though and upgrade as soon as possible.
If I were to stay on 4.0.3 can I still use the SpeedMod v3.9 kernel you're talking about? Also, I could really use a link on how to flash the new kernel as you might have figured out by now, I'm a Newbie

You can flash DXLRG (open germany) or the latest one (DXLRK) to just upgrade it to 4.0.4
For Asian release, I heard there's one already for SingTel but I'm not sure though if it comes with an Indian language pack on it.

Download the kernel to your SD card (internal or external)
Now since your rooted, download Mobile Odin, run it, grant access thru Superuser and go to the kernel section inside Mobile Odin pro and look for the kernel that you earlier saved from the download.
After that, just tap on flash firmware (inside Mobile Odin still) and that would restart your phone and once booted, you now have a new kernel already.
