TAJB Flashing Procedure? (Have pity on the Noob) - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Everyone,
I've been following the Port of Jelly Bean to the SGS, and haven't read anything related to the question that I am posing here. I've been running TeamICSSGS's v4.2 Rom for month's now. I'm not one to flash a rom every week, my interest is just to keep my phone current in terms of software.
So the next step being to flash Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. My question is the following, if flashing from the rom stated above is there anything I have to be aware of? Or would it be as straight forward as flashing it without a hitch? I've read on the forums for instance that TAJB rom will use the ICS rom's baseband and not replace it.
Or would it be recommended to go to another ICS based rom and flash from it? Any pointers and advice would be highly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I flashed TAJB from Slim ICS (4.0.4) + semaphore kernel after making a nandroid, tried TAJB rom than restored Slim ICS from nandroid.
It's still a test rom since it doesn't integrate GSM/data, so i guess you're going to flash it for the same aim, anyway no i don't think there should be any type of special rom/baseband to flash before going JB, just make a pair of nandroids (just in case) than follow the instructions in the thread (full wipe, flash, full wipe and fix permissions), it's quite simple.

Yes, going to be holding off until it's fully operational. My assumption was I wouldn't have any issues. But I like interacting with the community and learning from their lessons so I don't have to, especially the hard one's And we all know the addage: assumption is the mother of all...
Thanks for you feedback

it's absolutly the official ROM that excess app and sys app are removed on it.
is there any thing like that for note that deliver a speed and costumization ability beside that every thing working perfectly on it(pen and ...)

For custom GB roms, I have tried Rocket rom and the newer Litening rom. In my opinion, both are great and definitely worth considering.
For the GB, I have tried DarkyRom, ChrackRom, CheckRom, Cassie's XtraLiteRom, and Litening Rom. I found them very comparable in performance and battery life. For ChrackRom you have option to install a full, small, and extra small rom. I am using Litening Rom right now. I might go back to ICS Stunner rom, I like the Stunner rom except that it is not as stable as the GB roms in my SGN.

I really like ICS Stunner too, but you might want to exercise caution using that or any other ICS LP5/LP6 leak based ROMS until an issue with potentially hardbricking your phone during flashing is resolved.
If you're interested, there's a still experimental (but as far as hardbricking safer) ICS CM9 build that's really cool over here:

is it safe to flash GB-based roms ?

Hiya there ! I'll seize this opportunity to avoid creating a post of my own then ! I'm like Arasl, though i bought my GNote in february and i'm still running a non-root, stock ROM because i'm sort of "afraid of flashing".
First, i've never done it before, and since i'm a Linux user i've been searching for ways to do it through linux instead of the Odin/windows method but i'm now pretty much resigned to use Odin (seems simpler, methods actually do exist and there's more feedback, though any hint towards linux-oriented methods would be great).
I've restrained myself from flashing ever since i saw the brick-related posts from ICS Stunner ROM and i do NOT want to flash that ROM.
My questions are then following :
1) Is it possible to ROOT the phone without flashing on Kernel version 2.6.35.7 - N7000XXLC1 ?
2) If it is unsafe to flash ICS-based ROMs, is it 100% safe to flash gingerbread-based custom ROMs or is there still an important risk of bricking the phone?
I can imagine most people will answer yes to the previous question and in that case, which ROM would you advise that is both light (and smooth, since the stock ROM is a little laggy on the edges) and the most battery-saving?
Thanks for any hints to existing posts, i've been looking around but i just don't have the time to read the hundreds of pages of custom stock roms to compare them all by myself ;-)
Just use the latest cm9. Very safe and beautiful. If you need the spen functionality then use gb..

If by any means you are ready to work on windows, i would gladly help you in all these...although in a RISK on anything happens on completely you only.
I, too as being flasholhoic, flashed almost every ROM here in the development section both GB and ICS, every kernel, so i will try my best to avoid any risk but god-only-knows-the-best. As per your question,
1. Yes you can root your stock rom without flashing on Kernel version 2.6.35.7 - N7000XXLC1, Go here and select the right kernel and follow the procedure.
2. Official CM9 is the only (yet most) safest ICS build here, the rest being suffered by the ultimate phenomenal hardbrick bug. And yes its safe to flash any GB rom until you are switching it from GB to GB rom only.
The most important thing, take enough time to read read and read (even query) the instruction before flashing anything, or else you can have ample amount to time to read anything with coffee placed on your new bricked note. Choice is yours.

is kingdroid notemania version 5 is compatible with ics 4.0.3?

this is my first post, i just want to know if i do need to upgrade my ics 4.0.3 to 4.0.4 before i upgrade my rom to kingdroid notemania v5.
( i want to post this question to the kindroid thread but im still restricted to do so since im still a new member)
You are installing a custom ROM (i.e.) you are switching to an entire new environment, so your update is not going to be of much use. Everything is going to be new . And also don't do a wipe in ICS, it may trigger the emmc_brick bug. follow the procedure in the OP section of the ROM to be safe. Cheers. :good:

So ics update (to 4.0.4) is not necessary for me to install the kingdroid v5? coz i was thinking that kindroid v5 is only compatible with ics 4.0.4.
thanks for your help.
and also what do you mean by not doing a wipe? you mean wiping cache and dalvic is not good since it might lead to brick bug?
A wipe in general means full wipe. Since you are new i would recommend you to read the following thread before you start, spend some time getting to know what to do and what not to because "The Note" is not a cheap device to risk things. Anyways we can always play a safe game if we know what we are doing. And strictly follow the steps in OP of any ROM to be safe. Good Luck ahead. :good:

Which Galaxy Note N7000 ROM recommended flashing for new user?

Greetings.
I am the first time user planning to flash my 16GB Galaxy Note GT-N7000 phone (from Asia).
Previously I have been hard bricked my phone (MoBo damaged) due to improper / incorrect kernel flashing ROM. Already sent to Service Centre for replacement of MoBo under warranty. Now it's in the progress and I should be expecting it back in the couples of days.
Anyhow, I still prefer third party ROMs with awesome GUI. I plan to "try" flashing again when my phone is back.
This time, I would take more caution while doing this stuff. My request is, for first time new user like me, which ROM is recommended (plus suitable Kernel type which is more power saving and low temperature operating)?
I mean here maybe pointing more to what I so call close to "Samsung Custom ROM". I think that should be more convenient and safer for me rather than trying completely on new AOSP type for the first time. This is only my own opinion
What say you? Again, thanks for your recommendation. Have a nice day
i recommend you first try to read the rules of posting mate...requesting a move to the Q & A section...
ps...3 posts and already in the development section? hmm...
Moved To Q&A
This is in no way development, please post in the correct section. Anybody wondering the reason why this user can post in the dev section is due to the amount of time he has been a member. We thought a user with a long membership would be aware of such a basic rule, guess not
cleanote seems what you asking for. It's a clean rom based on stock, but very smooth
Honestly,i think every rom the Dev created are great.Just read through the OP of the each rom to see what rom is fit your style ( like you go to mall looking for shoe is fit you) and try it .Wish you luck...:victory:
Yeah, right. read through the OP and intructions a few times to be sure first.
Dudes, sorry for wrong posting in other section. I've been quite long time never browsing through this forum. That's why not familiar with the rules.
As my friend recommended me to search from XDA which is one of the best ROMs forum, here I am back again
BTW, what does OP stand for?
I have viewed through few threads in ROM dev section. Honestly, I'm still digesting the contents and descriptions...
Also, I require Chinese input or viewing too (forgot to state).
So far, I have been read through Criskelo ROMs (I like its GUI i.e. close to GS3 too), Fusion ROMs, CM9 ROMs etc. Not sure if these ROMs may fulfill what I've been requested?? Safe Kernels (this really worries me from what I've been experienced before----hardbricked! scare!)?
Thanks for your comment.
I would recommend CRASH rom...you can request the DEV for your Chinese stuff...its touchwizz base...safe kernel and very smooth with NO BUGS at all..:good:
For the awesome user interface I would say Paranoid Android (CM9, not CM10).
For the chinese stuff, I think Criskelo's rom supports it"• ADD Chinese Keyboard (on request)"
I'm not really sure if that's what you're asking for.
I think PA also supports chinese.
I don't think there are "new users" roms. Just read carefully the instructions and you should be fine.

Hi, let's say if I would like to flash Criskelo ROM, which safe Kernel shall I choose to use?
Speedmod, AbyssNote, GL Notecore (never heard, is it safe kernel)??
I just got back my phone with default stock GingerBread 2.3.6 (correction) ROM, without any rooting after repairing
Make sure you read the details on Rooting and flashing your phone.
NEVER WIPE / RESET on ICS Stock Kernels/ ROMS..
There's a lot of info in Dr. K's Stock ROM thread..
As for what ROM to use - I'd say CleaNote is probably what you're after, very close to stock with bloat removed. Bundled with the Dev's own Kernel...
Anyway, Good luck and remember to read, read and read again before you start messing around and bricking your device again..

Thanks for your advice. Actually I'm on stock GB 2.3.6 ROM now.
Should I flash any safe kernel before installing CleaNote ROM (as recommended)? Root required?
Also, what is "bloat removed"?

First your anwwer to what OP stands for it means "Original Post" .
Secondly, as you are on stock GB, you are safe from the Brickbug & can very well flash as you like, but keep in mind two things:
1- Read, re read & follow to the point the ROM developers installation instruction.
2- Do not Wipe / factory reset from any unsafe kernel. Only wipe from a safe kernel, i.e., GB & in case of ICS those with their MMC_CAP_ERASE command disabled like Speedmod K3-11, GL Notecore, etc.
Pls. read the stick section for additional information
By the way I would recommend Kingdroid Notemania Version 5.1.1 (With S3 Touchwiz UI Mods) with Speedmod Kernel for ICS K3-11 (Good performance & better battery)

Hi, thanks for your reply.
Noted your ROM & kernel recommendation. I've downloaded Criskelo v10.1 ROM previously (few hours downloading due to my slow internet connection). Thus, I plan to try this ROM first.
Actually, should I install any safer kernel even if this ROM contains it?
And, the correct steps for installation are ----> 1. root first 2. flash any so called CF_rooted_CWM_xxxx for GB ROM? 3. full wipe 4. flash this ROM in recovery mode?
actually you really should read, a LOT.

I've downgraded to stock GB ROM 2.3.5 (XXKK1 in my region). Then, I used InitialCFRootFlasher (CF-Root-SGN_ZS_MUL_KK1-v5.0-CWM5) to root + CWM as guided by owner of the OP. Would both different XX and ZS kernel types affect anything in term of phone functionality?
Finally, I found SuperUser and CWM in the menu as per attached pictures. Rooted, right?
What would be my next step to flash Criskelo v10.1 ROM? Thanks.
Your next step should have been second after rooting gb, back efs up, see my profike page, statistics and then backup thread I started

A question from temasek and other developers

I am new to this forum,so first let me introduce myself.I am a doctor in india.
I bought this phone last year and like most users i was really disappointed with it. Intially it was froyo and then with extreme difficulty I updated to lg stock Gingerbread using its update too.I think the tool itself was buggy like most lg stock ROMs.
Anyway updating to gingerbread was a bad experiance .Too much lag in doing even basic phone use ,forget a smart phone experiance.Anyway not explaining in detail all the problems ,we all know it.
Was waiting for Official ICS release,so never thought of Unofficial ROMS since wud have made it difficult to update to stock ICS by company.
But last weak finally decided to try CM based ROMS and after some research decided to try Temasek CM7 based unofficial ROM build 132,
I must say what an experiance I had. From awesome to wow ,i am short of words to describe it .
So here i must thank everyone involved with XDA and especially cynogenmod and Temasek in perticular.
Thank you Temasek
Thank you XDA
Thank you cynogenmod
You all have made this ****ty phone into a delight to use .
I have installed " n " no of applications and still there is no lag and there is no shortage of RAM(and LAG due to IT) even after i week of using it ,which i used to have with stock gingerbread.
I must say i had been a noob and XDA and all you developers have made me into a mobile phone expert rooter ,flasher, etc.
I had few issues which i wud like to discuss, thanks in advance to anyone who helps me solve these.
I had flashed temasek CM7 build 132.and I had thought it wud also flash latest temasek kernel but it seems it didn't.
It now has kernal version [email protected] # 1
Mod version CM7-20120809
I basically want
1.A kernel with voodoo sound support
2.Ramhack
3.Good battery performance with 3G on.
4.Camera mod if possible.
Temesek could you give a small tutorial on variour kernels made by you,I looked various log changes made by you on p990 kernels but i am very confused.
Also what is difference b/w OC and uv etc
I have spent two days installing various applications on your ROM, so obviously will not like to do factory reset, data reset ,cache reset etc
before flashing any new kernel made by you.Kindly provide some suggestions on what i shud do.
Symbiosis kernel looks promising too but again don't want to wipe anything basically reinstalling all applications all over again.Any suggestions.
And yes I am sure you people in XDA wud soon release a fully functional ICS and even a jellybean based ROMS.So Now with my experiance i can say dont eeven want a LG stock ICS or jellybean even if they release it,untill then I wud stick to this wonderfull ROM by temasek
Thanks everyone and all the best to developers in their efforts on developing a fully functional ICS /jellybean based ROM.Hope to see it soon.
Hi if you already have temasek ROM installed on your phone you can flash latest symbi0sis kernel 1.1.2 without loosing any data! just flash the kernel via cwm and boot the phone - done
also symbi0sis is based on temasek kernel, works perfectly with temaseks ROM
after kernel install u can open the app GuesteOC and enable the ramhack with your preferred size in MB

Thanks for quick reply stefan.
So does that mean i dont need to do data/factory reset or cache reset before flashing symbiosis kernel or any other kernal .I have tons of app's installed ,don't you there can be bugs if i dont do a factory/cache reset before flashing symbiosis kernel. Its written in most threads that kernel flashing is similar to ROM flashing ,so data/ cache rest is advisable.
Where can i find GuesteOC app or can i use terminal emulator method as described in some threads

Np just flash the kernel without any wipes. it will wipe dalvik cache automatically. i guarantee you it won`t break your apps.
GuesteOC is included and will be installed automatically. no need for command line, everything as simple as possible with symbi0sis kernel!
if you try other kernels you might need to wipe dalvik cache first if they dont do automatically!
also u can do a backup in cwm first so if something goes wrong you restore the backup with all your apps.
Thanks stefan i will apply your Kernel today itself.Hope it solves everything ,Voodoo sound support ( i have the app with me) ramhack and good battery life too. Will post back if i face any issue.and offcourse my compliments
Also another question to you .You have said CWM backup/Restore .I did the same 3 days back before installing temasek ROM.But had forgotten to keep backup of some important SMS messages so tried to restore original stock LG ROM through CWM back up/and restore.
I Had a real shock it said that i had restored everything but my LG started rebooting again and again just stops at LG logo everytime.Even recoery was not accessible. So i had a torrid time going through variuos XDA thread .NVflashed stock froyo ROM and then flashed temasek ROM.
The only thing i missed was that i pressed backup/and restore straight from CWM app instead of going through manual recovery doing data/cache wipe and then restoring from Backup image.
Can you through some light on the serious issue that i had

Maybe it had to do with different file system (ext3 stock / ext4 temasek) -- afaik you need to flash back2ext3 or something when you want to go back to original stock ROM. However I have never done that (going back to orig stock). Next time best use "SMS Backup & Restore" (available in market) for backing up and restoring SMS after ROM change!
Good luck with the new kernel I'm sure everything will be fine.

P.S.
I'm king of the world
Thanks everyone all issues solved ,and i knw now whuy i bricked my phone while restoring back.
Stefen your kernel is awesome.Perfect combination for temasek's ROM
I think i will stick to this ROM for a while, untill temasek or someone comes out with a fully functional ICS/jellybean based ROM.Will never flash stock LG ICS's based ROM even if LG bring it out(Hope LG release it soon that shud provide d missing drivers that we urgently need).
Temasek your ROM is d "project butter" for me.I dont feel d need to wait for jellybean ROM.And yes i already have cwm 5.0.20 version recovery installed.

[Q] ROM Suggestion

I know you guys are probably sick of this question, but I really would like to hear what ROM you guys recommend for the Samsung galaxy S i897 captivate. There are soooo many choices. I am used to using gingerbread on my previous phone, so I am looking for gingerbread or higher (I am @ 2.2 froyo now) , with stability being #1 importance. Thanks for your suggestions.

We're up to Jelly Bean now, if you're on froyo, you'll need to flash the GB bootloaders (can be found in the dev section in stickies).
If you're looking for stability over anything, AOCP by the Collective would be my suggestion. Of course, every user have their preference but the 2 most stable ROMs I've used on JB are AOKP by Sixstrings and AOCP (either stock kernel or semaphore).
Keep in mind that the more mods you make once on your ROM, the more chance you have to break something (that goes for any ROM).

As he said, make sure you get the bootloaders installed before moving forward. As for my two cents on which ROM to choose... I haven't used AOCP since it first released so it is undoubtedly much further along than the original build. My personal favorite is Hellybean but with the installer the dev uses you end up having to download a large file compared to other ROMs.
Thanks, I am doing a lot of reading. *head explode*
I liked Andromeda and AOCP.
Since the phone is used, I restored to factory (but it stayed @ 2.2). Looks like I need to go to 2.1 factory. From reading I think I should use the Heimdall method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1266172 to revert to stock and flash GingerBread Boot-loader. Then I will follow instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1983079 to install AOCP (JellyBean 4.1.2).
Very nervous about this lol.
Thanks guys.

Actually, you should be getting stock KK4 (GB): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1300843
From there, you get Odin 1.85 flash Corn Kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1294477 - This will give you root.
Now you can flash the ROM you want in cwm recovery as per their instructions.
Happy flashing!
Try MIUI if u havnt already...
