Many problems and glitches with droid 4 ICS. Any fixes? - Motorola Droid 4

Hi, ever since my droid 4 received the ICS update, ive notciced many bugs which interefere with me using the droid 4, and i was wondering if there were any fixes for them
Could these have been caused because of the way i upgraded the droid 4? I was too impatient to wait for the ICS upgrade to be released in my area when they started to send it out, so i ended up downloading it from here and installing it manually. could that be the cause?
anyways, here is a list of major glitches im experiencing
-touch screen refuses to work for no reason some times at random. it works on the lock screen and on the power off screen, but no where else. only rebooting the phone solves it
-when typing in a field in the browser, when i switch to a different field using the keyboard arrows, it copies everything from the first field to the second one
-browser randomly seems to hang indefinitely when loading a web page. i know its not a web connectivity problem, because when i go force close the browser in the app manager it works fine when i open it again
-sometimes the phone just freezes up entirely for no reason at all, and a hard boot is required. usually happens when using the browser
-sometimes bad lag happens out of nowhere
-the game plants vs zombies sometimes will freeze and reboot the phone by itself

At the risk of sounding like a Verizon CSR, have you tried a factory reset after the install?

I know a lot of people that were having various issues with the ICS update reported performing a factory reset (full wipe) of there phone fixed most of the issues. I've also heard wiping the sd card can sometimes fix issues. I doubt that performing the update manually is the source of your problem (I updated the same way) but you could also try fastbooting ICS to start fresh. Just make sure you back up anything you don't want to lose (pictures, etc.). Good luck!

I doubt your impatience was the cause of the slowness. ICS for the Droid 4 is nice, but is pretty buggy and slow. I've had all of the same issues you've reported including some random reboots. I use my phone a lot, and have a lot of email addresses and a lot of programs in memory constantly doing things, so I'm not surprised that my phone gets bogged down.
I recently loaded up Hashcode's CM10 port onto the phone and I'm telling you it feels like a whole new experience! So far, it's pretty amazing for me, it's been my daily driver for almost a week and I'm just checking for some updates now to fix a minor issue (my Wireless MAC address changes in this ROM). If you're a power user like me, you should really try to load up Safestrap and give AOKP, AOSP or CM10 a whirl!

[Q] Random Reboots

Perhaps not random, but possibly keyboard related. I believe I have experienced at least three, perhaps more reboots at various times. I just had one a minute ago when I opened my keyboard from a sleep state (dark screen). My lockscreen had what looked like a Droid X background which caught my attention, then after a couple of seconds, it rebooted.
As I mentioned, this has happened at least twice before, but always when I was trying to do something and (I believe) involving the keyboard. I've never had it reboot in the middle of anything, so the impact is negligible. Add to that how FAST the D3 reboots, it's a very minor annoyance. My old Tbolt used to do that as well, but the reboot time was probably three or four times as long, and it sometimes did it in the middle of something.
Has anyone else experienced this? If you have, sound off and perhaps we can get Moto's attention. If it's just me, then that's great news and I doubt I'll do anything about it since the impact is so minor.
It's hard not to notice since it makes the "Droid" noise when it reboots. Assuming you don't have the same sound assigned to a notification of course.
I noticed it yesterday once (and I just got the phone then too ;-; ), and it was while I was opening the camera app, I decided to open the keyboard for some reason (I don't know why), the phone locked up for a minute and then just rebooted. I also had a temporary lockup while opening up the keyboard while opening Handcent, but it regained responsiveness after about 15 seconds. For me it happens to be something to do with the keyboard while opening apps. We need more people to reproduce this problem so we can get down to the root cause :|
Got two droid 3`s in my house and haven't experience any random boots.

Happened to me while talking on the phone a few times. Got a replacement and it happened again. Never with the keyboard though. Very troubling especially with the second handset.
I have experienced reboots with the camera and camcorder apps lagging, and just general issues with those apps anyway.

I haven't had it happen since I originally posted until today. Today it rebooted in my pocket.
Perhaps it could just be a heat issue. I noticed that another thing along with my other conditions I posted was that the phone felt really hot.

The Droid 3 has a dual core 1 ghz processor processor built inside which is why it starts up so fast. Its probably having these problems because of the new android OS gingerbread 2.3.2 because of how new this operating system is. The first phone designed with the new OS for verizon wireless was the sony xperia which produced surprisingly a very good battery life with the processer designed for gaming built inside that phone.this reminds me of the first droid on Verizon the Motorola Droid A855 where there where some flukes where it would freeze up every now and then. But there were updates that eventually solved the problem. Because this is a relatively new OS there is deffinittely going to be some flukes in the software and there will be updates to solve these most likely coming soon. And especially as more and more users are buying this phone.

1. Everyone knows that it's dual-core.
2. It runs Android 2.3.4. (Hence no root yet)
3. To the OP, no reboots. Had it since the 13th.

I haven't seen another reboot since the 28th but I did have the odd experience last night of not being able to get a new wallpaper to take. In fact, I noticed that it had one of the stock wallpapers on it, the diagonal black and grey bars, but couldn't change it. Then this morning I thought about it and rebooted the phone. The last wallpaper I'd tried to change it to came up on reboot. Interesting but not alarming... unless it starts doing that frequently.
FYI I haven't noticed it running hot at any point.
Thanks for all the input everyone.
Probably seen it do it half a dozen times. IIRC it's not a full reboot, just the Android stack (i.e., same Linux kernel instance).
Have a logcat of one and don't seen anything that suggests where the problem is..just a whole bunch of "com.xxxxxx.xxxx has died" followed by normal restart log messages.
Odd that you all are experiencing this. I have not had a single reboot.

This issue is starting to cause me a good bit of frustration. Most of the time it occurs when waking the phone (sliding out keyboard seems to make it particularly likely). Also seeing complete freezes now which require battery pull.
Phone is now more than 30 days old. It was purchased online. Anyone know the odds of getting a *NEW* (not refurbished) if attempting to return it now? I'm still pretty certain this is a software issue, but may try replacing it in the chance it isn't.
I went into wifi settings and chose to forget all the connections. No more random rebooted.

I wouldn't count on that being the issue.
I've had the problem out in the field (not connected to WiFi) and have had random reboots as well.
Heres a tip for troubleshooting this issue which i 90% guarantee - factory reset your phones put zero apps on them and tweaks, use it for a week and see if u get a reboot.
Then each week after add a single tweak or app(install/uninstall/freeze), may take a yr for some of us since we can't seem to stop downloading random badly coded apps lol...
-smc
For me at least SMC, I've had random reboots from stock during the first week. I'm putting it down to bad software for now.
I usually get 1 a week, sometimes less.

Lag + occasional freezing

Sup,
I experience lag frequently. A lot of times I can feel something in the phone spinning or vibrating as it comes out of the lag. the vibration isn't as rigorous as the notification vibrations. Also sometimes it will lag but not come out of it and completely freeze then restart itself. The freeze/restart seems to happen when surfing the web.
I'm running serendipity 7 build 2. Its happened on serendipity 6.x also. Not sure if its rom related or just my phone failing. Anyone experience this?
I should add that I have 9.31gb available out of 13 total.

I've had similar lag and reboot issues on Serendipity 7 don't know why, but you can always just try another ROM and see if the problem persists.

A couple things that come to mind, one is the vibrating sounds like something is F/C'ing. Take a look at your applications, what is running, do you know what you're trying to run when it vibrates? Also take a look at your system resources, I get lag if I have too many items running and system mem gets too low
"Most" issues tend to be software related so that is where I would focus my attention. If all else fails, reinstall your ROM

It happens the most when I am browsing the web. I have been using xscope for a long time. First the free version and now pro version since it was faotd on amazon. It happened with both versions. although xscope could be the problem its not the only culprit cuz it happens when im not browsing the web also. Maybe I should install logcat and check it out after the next time it happens...?

Lag & auto shut down
My captivate with serendipity 7 initially seemed perfect. But after a couple of weeks of usage, it started becoming slow. I face quite a bit of lag, automatic shutdowns and poor battery. I do have a few apps running in the background, but there was no lag when i was using cognition 4 or CM7. When my phone shuts down automatically, I have to take the battery out and put it back in to restart it. Holding just the power button doesn't switch it on.

Not to be an ass but you sorta jacked my topic. I'm not experiencing sleep of death. My problem has to do with the phone freezing then restarting itself.
Just don't want more posts further veering of course and hindering a solution for me. Thanks.

Bionic Unexpected Rebooting

[Q]
Out of the blue my Bionic just started rebooting. 8-10 time per day, who knows how may time at night. I am using the stock ROM. I am looking for a stable ROM that I can use to fix the problem. I also have the problem of disapearing apps that I move to the ext card.
Feedback on possible cures will be welcomed.
I just experienced my first unexpected reboot. It was after plugging in my USB to my computer.
This seems like the sort of thing that would have a 50% chance of being related to your hardware, and a 50% chance of an unstable app screwing something up. The stock software is at least stable enough that it's not very likely to be the cause of your issues, and flashing another ROM (which will have the same kernel) won't help if it is a hardware issue.
A factory reset followed by staggered reinstallation of apps (one or two at a time, to see if one in particular might be causing issues) would be my first step for a problem as extreme as random reboots. The next step is through warranty channels. I might even do that first- I don't think I could put up with a phone that rebooted on me.
And the cure for disappearing apps is to not use media area for storage. The phone dedicates 4gb for apps, that should be more than enough until they patch a fix.
i may have to add that my phone was completely stable until i purchased and installed the extended battery then i started to experience reboots and a few locks here and there.
i did a few factory reset on the stock but the phone was still acting up with the new battery.
i then decided to root and run roms and to be frank no locks and or reboots running the same battery that seemed to be causing the problems based on that being the only change to my phone before the reboot and locks.
i am not saying that there is something there with the stock as there would be more reports on this but rooting and going back to stock is a single click now making it a fast process to trouble shoot the software.
i am experiencing a bad or short life with the extended so in my case it could have been the battery screwing up the reads on the software (guess) but the first 3 charge from full to dead just about 3 days after that same extended only last one day.
in general it seemed that my issue could have been a bad battery and wiping data and playing with roms may had help but in the end i will be calling verizon for a battery replacement as i doubt that in two weeks the battery charge for an extended could only last 1 day of medium use.
sorry long response and by no means i'm i encouraging to root and rom just speaking out of my experience.
Hi - first post here. After 4 Thunderbolts - Verizon sent me a Bionic. Much better however, after rooting with 43v3r and de-bloating with The Black Hat App - I'm having random reboots. Initially, the reboots were several times per day increasing in frequency to several times an hour. Y u c k - My Thunderbolt could do that too.
So in troubleshooting:
1 - I've reverted to stock build - no add'l apps: No reboots in 48 hours. So - I doubt it's hardware.
2- After reverting - I then rooted w/43v3R, then debloated - just using stock apps - no reboots in 24 hours. So, I really doubt it's debloating or rooting
3 - After adding a few apps - Stitcher, Enhanced email, SVOX w/voice, Beautiful Widgets (w/clock selected) - I get a reboot.
4 - Remove everything but stitcher. No reboots - 24 hours.
5 - Add Enhanced Email yesterday
Today, I had a reboot.
6 - So culprit 'looks' like Enhanced Email OR perhaps a switching problem between 3/4g (The Thunderbolt - Stitcher used to drop connection in this particular location so, there IS an issue w/3G-4G.
Questions:
1 - If it's not a 3g/4g issue; could it be related to where Enhanced email or Stitcher chooses to install itself?
2 - Is there a log somewhere where I could find 'boot' times and any issues relating to reboots? Like a 'minidump' in Windows...
thanks
I, too, have started having unexpected reboots. I can't pinpoint it exactly, but I have also recently isntalled Enhanced Email (trial version).
Reboot Logger
Hey Google is our friend - don't know why I didn't look before but I found this in Android Market.
"Reboot Logger" by Watanabe,Masayuki.
Just installed it - will report back after Thanksgiving (in the U.S. - Thursday)...
(I would post a link but I'm a noob here - and, now I know why I hate myself.)
Looks like promising -
Have yall installed any themes or different battery icons, or anything like that to yours? Mine is 43v3R rooted with the liberty romv2. I was changing a cpl of the icons and experienced a reboot just out of the blue. I got rid of the icons I changed and stayed with the icons that came with the liberty rom and have no issues at all. I do not have enhanced mail on mine.
most bionics will turn off and wont turn back on till you do a battery pull. Its a known issue, all you have to do is google it and it turns up. From what ive read putting the battery on performance mode and putting on detect in pocket will help. Personally it doesnt help, i had the issue with the stock battery so purchased a extended thinking it was the battery, but after doing research i found out it isnt. They say the new OTA should fix it
icons - reboot logger
Thanks - haven't changed any icons BUT I am using HTC Thunderbolt wallpaper. I had a Thunderbolt that had a reboot problem until the OTA before Gingerbread - Verizon offered me the Bionic when I called about my Thunderbolt issues (I had three replacements - all with the same issues).
I will try different wallpaper -
Reboot logger works well but doesn't offer a clue as to what is causing the reboots. Mine has rebooted 2-3 times per day since I installed Reboot Logger(RL).
3 times a day is tolerable but, I would like to get to the bottom of what's causing it.
What IS helpful with RL is that it does show that the reboots are not occuring in any obvious time sequence.
They may be related to push emails coming in from my Exchange server. Not sure - I'll post more as I learn more. Hopefully the upcoming OTA will fix - though my experience with HTC's OTAs does not give me a lot of hope.
Update - Last night, I uninstalled Stitcher - Stitcher frequently throws errors requiring a FORCE CLOSE. I also have kept Blueooth off.
No reboots in 24 hours -
Will reinstall Stitcher in the morning (I need it at the gym)...
Update tomorrow/Monday
Turned Bluetooth ON - no reboots in 36 hours so, It looks like Stitcher may be the culprit - I wonder if Stitcher has issue with the internal/external SD storage scheme.
As I noted previously, Stitcher reports 'force closes' frequently - especially when it's not even active (when I have not loaded it or used it).
(No sooner than I posted this - my phone rebooted. And again, and again will switch off BT - I'm in my office so, there's could be an issue with 3g/4g switching or other interference...)
Have you tried setting the phone to run strictly 3g? I have had no issues at all with mine jumping back and forth between 3g/4g.. I leave mine on 3g to keep it from trying to search for a 4g signal. I never turn bluetooth on, nor do I ever really use the compass. hmmmm... Can you tell me everything you have done to the phone. Apps you have installed, what ROM you using, if you have .886/.893 etc? I'm willing to see how close we are as for as how our phone's are setup and help as much as I can. I have not had a single issue with mine other then that one reboot after changing the battery icon.
After nearly two weeks of monitoring restarts - it appears that the problem is more related to where I am. At my home, restarts are rare and related to Stitcher.
At work in Beverly Hills, CA; restarts occur frequently. I assume it has something to do with 3g/4G switchover/crossover or interference.
I had lots of problems with the Thunderbolt dropping data connections in 90210. I could not use the hotspot. On the Bionic, the hotspot functions really well. I've used it up north near Fresno in 3G only land, here in BH and at home where I have decent 4G coverage.
When I remove Stitcher, the reboot problem disappears. Sometimes when I 'wake' the phone, there is a dialog apologizing for Stitcher having 'force closed' even if I haven't used it for days. Market reviews indicate anecdotally that Stitcher has a problem with force closes. This behavior must also be at the root of some of the reboots.
I've also set all programs not to update automatically - this may have reduced the reboots as well. On average, I'm getting 2-3 reboots per day. More than I would like but, tolerable.

Droid4 Stock ICS Bugs

All,
We don't have an ICS Bugs thread going on. I wanted to check with some of the people here on XDA to see if they are experiencing what I am. Currently on .213, but most of these bugs I've seen since the begining. Oh, I'm also in Canada running on 3G HSPA+. I'm stock, but rooted with safestrap installed.
1) When placing a phone call, the phone hangs up immediately (you here the disconnected beep), then retries the phone call a few seconds later (it always succeeds). I have tried this on a freshly wiped phone and found the same experience. I have also tried disabling the Assisted Dialing, but have found ikt's the same thing
2) When using Google Chrome, if there is a input box, most of the time my keyboard won't appear (I'm using Swype as my default keyboard)
3) Phone runs hot sometimes, and when it's running hot it slows down to a halt. Usually happens after a day or two without a restart
4) My photo doesn't appear in the text messaging app (worked in AOKP/CM9 on my D3, as well as it works on my gf's Nexus S)
The only bug I noticed was that it initially booted up in global mode, and wouldn't connect to 4G/CDMA. Switching it to CDM+LTE fixed the issue and I haven't seen a bug since (213).:good:

Is your chrome working properly? Specifically the bug I mentioned in the OP...?
I didn't comment on that because I use Opera
Just tried the Chrome Beta now just to see, and I can confirm I am seeing the same behavior. I use Swiftkey, so it isn't a Swype-specific bug either.
What exactly is the difference between Chrome and the built-in browser? Aren't they both Webkit-based? Why is Google bothering to work on both?

Chrome is way faster at many things since it users hardware acceleration for video. Does text input work properly on opera?

Text entry works fine in both the stock browser and Opera. BTW, Opera also has hardware acceleration, which is why it never worked in any of the Frankbuilds of ICS based off the GB kernel ... So you can have your teh snappy and type with it too
I'm on the 212 build and i can't screencap using power + volume down.
Is this fixed in 213 or am i just doing it wrong?
Also on 212 i can't control the default google music app or winamp from my bluetooth headset when the screen is off. I could do this before with the same version of the winamp app when i was back on gingerbread. I tried upgrading winamp, but that did nothing. Is there any change in 213?
Thanks ahead of time
Edit: just tried it and the volume down + power combo worked. Lol
One question, possible thought to ponder.
Are the bugs being described here really bugs of Android 4 or are they bugs in the individual app itself not being fully compatible with Android 4 yet?
Do similar bugs happen on a non-motorola device with android 4?
I'm considering flashing one of the leaks, so I'm trying to understand how you are sure these are ics bugs before I make the leap and run into issues.
Thanks.
Apologies if this constitutes hijacking the thread, if it does let me know and I"ll edit it to delete the question.
I was able to figure out bug #4, I had to login with my Google+ account again, since the update yesterday everything seems to be working fine.
Bugs 1 through 3 still exist, although I've switched off Global mode for now and put it to GSM only, it seems like the phone runs a lot cooler in this mode.
Even after updating Chrome to the final version, I'm still experiencing that text input bug. Maybe it's a Motorola issue... Can't wait for the next version of the leak!
I have tasker reboot my phone every morning at 6am. The phone doesn't need to be rebooted every day, but it ensures that it is fresh and ready to go every morning
Nothing more annoying than trying to do something with your phone and having to reboot it because it is slow for whatever reason.

for this reason I think there will be other leaks, ICS is supposed to handle killing processes much better than GB, however the settings seem to not be aggressive enough in 213.
Probably there will be, though I likely won't update again for a while. Don't feel like losing all that data...

You could just do what I do: once you have root install safestrap and then take a backup of your phone before flashing the upgrade.
Once you're all done upgrading, re-root and re-install safestrap, then do an advanced restore and only restore the data. Voilla, all your apps are back.

I don't know, just had a random reboot after watching a youtube video in firefox, most likely memory related, not sure who's fault though, Motorola or Firefox. gotta root and use system tuner to change memory mgmt states.

That is a great idea. Though there hasn't been another leak since 213, so
Notification Bar Sticking/Wont Pull Down
I am on 212 currently, and I have noticed in 208 and 212 something that has happened only twice so far. Today, I just tried to check my notifications, and the bar will not pull down.
After a reboot it works fine, and it has only happened 2 times in the past couple weeks since the leaks first appeared.
Obviously it is a minor glitch, but just thought I'd throw it out there in case anyone else has seen it and overlooked it. :cyclops:

I have heard of a few others using this method successfully. If you are not using safestrap or just don't want to go this route take a look at the post link in my signature. It's a modified version of the original Droid 4 Utility and includes a script to jump from one ICS leak to another without losing data. It also flashes the GB files and the Kernel (boot.img) in one script, thus making it easier to go from one leak to another.
Regarding bugs, my wife got a razr yesterday. It wouldn't pull down the ICS update, so I just sideloaded it. We both run some of the same apps. So this gave me a chance to do side by side comparisons. The issue with some of the icons being small in the left top of the status seems to be a app issue. The chrome issue isn't present on the razr, of course there isn't a physical keyboard. Otherwise my 213 ICS seems to run great.
I found a new bug, it looks like GSM call forwarding doesn't work properly... at least it doesn't with my SIM card, I'm on Rogers in Canada.
Does Verizon support call forwarding? Does it work on there?
I have noticed in Chrome that pressing shift and then one of the symbol keys (like @) will only work if you hold the shift key.
More importantly I don't get notifications of app updates from google play. Check to see if you have any apps that need updating. Superuser had a update on July 1, dropbox yesterday and voodoo rootkeeper on June 28, I think. Anyone else?

[Q] Random Reboot after flash.

Since it seems Cyan has halted release of cyan 11 nightlies for the Atrix HD (indicative of what, I'm not sure), I figure it's worth solving this personal issue now; since it will most likely require another factory reset and I'd rather do it now.
Since day one of using custom ROMs, I've had the issue of my phone randomly crashing. Despite previously using only stable cyan releases, making sure to do clean resets (factory, dalvik, formatting system partitions, etc), letting the phone "stabilize" after installing (no clue what this means, but people seem to suggest just letting the phone sit about 10 min after flashing a new ROM, claiming a more stable experience), and even flashing a new kernel, I still see the same issue.
At this point, I've pretty much accepted that more likely than not, I'll have my phone randomly freeze and reset in my hands during basic use, calls, texting, internet use, listening to music, etc. Though clearing the Dalvik cache seems to quell the problem, it soon returns to the familiar behavior a day or two later. Any other basic solutions I might be overlooking? Suggestions, even obvious, very welcome.
CM11 switched to unified builds for the Moto 8960 family . http://www.cmxlog.com/11/moto_msm8960/
You can safely download a zip and dirty flash it over your current CM11 installation. At least that's what I did and I'm having possibly the smoothest experience so far on this phone/CM combo running Sat March 01 nightly.
About your crashes, do you get a phone freeze with signal loss before restarts? Do you always get a restart when the phone crashes?
Did you try enabling 2G only for a while? Do you crash while on WiFi?
You could also try another ROM such as Validus. I find the 4.3 release to be quite stable.
Thank you for the link to the new unified build. I've been busy with approaching midterm that I'd only heard of the new builds but didn't look into it personally.
As for the freezing. It's always been the same behavior: screen and all function buttons suddenly becoming unresponsive with no warning or change in signal (regardless of wifi or data use) remaining frozen for 10 to 30 sec, before returning to the unlocked bootload warning screen and the normal cyan reboot animation and normal lock screen after.
Everytime is has froze it will restart (i suspected a memory issue at one point, but after watching the memory usage long enough to see it randomly freeze but no change in mem, I doubt that it's directly the issue). I have not tried switching to 2g, so it would be worth a try. It will freeze regardless of whether wifi is off or on.
The only real "pattern" I could argue seeing is that it freezes most often during skype calls, while playing music (pandora and play music), and internet using browser; though it might only be because I'm actually paying attention to the phone while it is doing these tasks, I'm sure that it's probably freezing and resetting in my pocket thoughout the day. It will also randomly reset while looking through settings or non-data dependent tasks. Ironically, I've never had it reset on me while I was watching a youtube video. Go figure.

Any ROM, stable, nightly, cyan or other, with still see it start randomly freezing and rebooting an hour to a day after flashing.
-update*
After having switched to 2g signal instead of LTE, I haven't seen anymore randomly rebooting. I'm not sure if this was the issue but it's already been a day which is longest I've seen it remain stable.
1 Week later, back to the same behavior as before. Seems I might just screwed for having a stable modded phone.
