Hey guys! My contract from verizon is running up and I desperately need a new phone; but I still have unlimited 4G and I'm not going to let Verizon contract me into another phone and lose it! HAH What a joke, 2gb a month for the "cheapest" option? No thank you. So I went ahead and ordered a mint condition Droid 4 for a nice price It should arrive this Friday
I'm upgrading from a Thunderbolt (the old girl served me well) and I cannot, and I can't stress this enough, cannot WAIT to have a physical keyboard back. I used to to be a Blackberry Curve and Tour owner back in the day before I made the switch to Android.
My question to you guys is, what ROM should I run? I want a full experience, so no non-working mechanics so I will be staying away from the broken camera roms, at least til they're stable. Also, what other things should I know before getting my new phone?
Thanks, and I hope to be part of the xda droid 4 owning family in a couple of days

If your looking for bug free myfishbear's Eclipse ROM is probably the way to go. As for other things to know, you will need to root and install safestrap recovery in order to install ROMs. I recommend the Droid 4 Utility ICS Only. That will allow you to root and also has a function to install safestrap.
And welcome to the D4 forums!

Thank you! I was seriously expecting responses like "buy a better phone" or something. Quick question; do I have to flash radios like I did with the Thunderbolt? If I get stock gingerbread OS, should I upgrade to stock ICS and then root? Or will it not make a difference?
Thanks!

I love my D4 You do not need to flash radios or anything like that. If it still has GB on it I would go ahead and update to ICS first and then root. That way you don't have to mess with root keeper or anything like that.
Thanks for the reply again! I will upgrade to ICS then root
It'll be here tomorrow, can't wait!
I suggest rooting stock and freezing a bunch of the garbage ICS apps that you will never use.
Fwiw, I've recently bought a used D4 for the same reason
(High 5!) And have not installed a new rom. I've just rooted, mainly so I could freeze a few things and use rom toolbox's ad blocker. Not to take anything away from the devs who do great work, but personally I'm totally happy with the (rooted) stock ICS. I know JB is supposed to be snappier, but I'm not seeing any sluggishness anyway. Welcome to the D4 world-the keyboard is AWESOME, really.
Sent from my DROID4 using xda app-developers app
I'd prefer to install Eclipse rom because there is no bloat to freeze and it's really fast. Also, it gets rid of a few spy tools Moto and Verizon placed on the stock roms.
Moreover, when using safestrap (which is needed to flash a rom) you don't have to worry about screwing up your system because it prevents you from messing up the stock rom.
FedEx is terrible. My phone won't be here til tomorrow
Anyway.
I think I will try and use Eclpise first. It looks like what I am after
Another vote for Eclipse here
The JB ROMs, CM10, AOKP etc. are all very nice, but missing crucial features like camera flash and the HDMI port.
Does eclipse introduce any bugs? If it gives stock functionality without the stock bloat, I'll be changing my mind...

Not noticed any bugs.
I find the (optional, flashed separately) speed tweaks to really hurt battery life, but the basic ROM (plus olegfusion's GSM patch) works just fine.
Thanks! In that case I'll probably try it out when my semester ends and I have time to tinker.
I want to tag in here, I recently purchased this phone and im from the Netherlands. I read that the Droid4 will have stock JB (4.2) support. The thing is, I am dutch and the phone isn't unlocked. Now i've been trying to understand if the update is possible for me and if the update is out allready (cant find anything about it)
Little background info:
I've had the desire Z when it intially launched and it broke down last month. Been using the desire for a month and im going nuts! Really missing a physical HD and when I started googling it seemde that the droid4 is made for me, but not being sold in stores in the NL.
It depends... what are running right now? what are you looking for? performance or battery life??????????????
I have not seen any news that this phone will get 4.2, but Motorola currently has the device listed among those that will receive 4.1 at some point (no date scheduled, though). There has not yet been an official stock release of any form of Jellybean to the Droid 4 so far.
Sorry for the late reply, I got the phone now and I saw that Hashtag is one of the core dev's for 4.1/4.2 AOKP/CM10. The phone is unlocked when upgrading to ICS via WiFi, so thats not a worry. The problem is that I cant get the data to work, ive posted about it here

I've never had much luck with GSM/UMTS data on Hashcode's ROMs. Stick with something like Eclipse ICS for now until Hashcode's ROMs mature a bit.
if I were you, I'd also go for the eclipse rom.
I had installed the jb rom at first, but somewhen it got really slow and apps began to crash, I also lost connection with my carrier more often then with the eclipse rom that I've changed to now.

I just recently got a used Droid 4 myself, and I have to agree with ECLIPSE. It was the first rom I installed (immediately after I got the phone), and I rooted/safestrapped with the ICS Utility. It was an absolute breeze, and ECLIPSE is running wonderfully.

Hey guys, need some advice. TL;DR at the bottom.
So I currently own a DX2 and my father owns a D3. I've rooted and custom ROM'd my DX2 and get great battery life which my father is jealous of. He is older and isn't very tech savvy so I tell him to wait and see if his phone will get ICS.
Today, he comes back to me and says he doesn't want to wait for ICS because he is fed up with his battery life. Says he wants to ROM and do this and that blah blah blah...
I haven't been following D3 ICS news, but should I try and tell him to wait for an official OTA to be released again? Or should I go ahead and ROM it? Keep in mind that he is not very tech savvy so I'm not so sure that all that customization would be a good thing. If I ROM it, are there any good ones I should investigate further?
TL;DR - Father want's ROM on D3, not very tech savvy. Wait for ICS or ROM it? Which ROM?
The ones we have the blutooth does not work right and video recording but if he has to have one cm9 for droid 3 is the best and i like it let him give it a go just make a back up if he does not like it go back to stock and flash any of the ics roms listed but i think cm9 is the best
Sent from my DROID3 using XDA
Just use safestrap so that you leave the original rom intact and install whatever you want to along side it knowing you can just switch back if it breaks... as for actual word on ics motorola still has the d3 listed as "evaluating" meaning they're dragging their feet still on even respondong to an official d3 ics release.
I would keep him on GB as to have full functionality instead of what we accept as dev bugs in ICS. If he's not very tech savvy, I'd suggest not giving him something lacking flash, video recording, and other codecs.
As for GB ROM's, I think Liberty has the best battery life, but they're all better than stock.
ICS isn't easy on the battery life currently. I'd advice on a gb rom, like liberty or darkdroid
Rocking with my M3 and XDA app
Guys if you read he's dad wants ics not no stock rom and by the looks of it we will not get ics from Motorola any ways so the roms we have is what we get and steel Droid 5.0 and cm9 are better on battery life then the ics roms are but if he's dad wants ics this is the only way to get it and he's dad will like ics also hell every one I know does not won't to set my phone down when they see it but any ways if your dad has to have it do it and let us know how it goes

I guess the answer to his question is opinion then. Given the info that he gave about his dad not being tech savy I would say wait and see what happens with kexec over the next week or two instead of flashing a semi-working ics port to his phone where he might/will run into constant problems with bluetooth, using websites (flash), problems with camera, no video recording etc etc. From my experience non-techies just want it to work 100%.
Will he's dad can still give it a go and can all ways go back to stock but only thing I have issues with is wifi and hotspot my cammra and video recording works just fine for me

Then I would stick to my original answer of using safestrap to install ics alongside (pretty sure you have to anyways) and be prepared/show him how to turn off the safe system so he can get back to stock when something he wants to use doesn't work.
Thanks for the advice guys. Looks like I have some reading to do
If I do flash a new ROM, I want one that is going to be pretty low maintenance. I do enough tinkering with my phone and it eats up my very limited free time, and adding another device that I have to maintain and backup is just a pain for me. But I digress...
Also, leerpsp, I never said he wants ICS. He wants something with decent battery life, which is why I'm waiting to see if an official ICS build is going to be released or not. I would take a low maintenance OTA build over a high maintenance custom ROM any day

I did read that, but as said earlier, with someone blatantly branded as non-tech savvy, the ICS ROMs are shotty at best by general consumer standards. What we accept and get excited over earns a disappointed blank stare from 95+% of the consumer market. If he's ok without basic Android features like video recording and flash, then I would suggest SD5, but if he wants 100% full functionality, ICS isn't for him.

If what he mainly wants from ICS is battery life, now isn't his time to get it. From my time on GB, Libtery3 2.0 had the longest life.
Hello. I will be receiving a Droid 3 as a warranty replacement tomorrow. It comes with ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich) pre-installed. I have been searching, and cannot find a way to root the Droid 3.
I am hoping I missed it. If someone can point me to the tutorial for rooting the Droid 3 with ICS, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks in advance.

Where did you hear it will come with ICS...? Because it won't.
I was told this by the Verizon rep. It is a warranty replacement. he specifically said it has ICS on it. No, I am not mistaken. Maybe he was?
Even if it doesn't, I have been unable to find a tutorial for rooting the Droid 3.
I can assure you that it will not be arriving with ICS, I'm sure he must have been mistaken. It will most likely be running Gingerbread 2.3.4 with the 5.6.890 system software.
Anywho... here is the tutorial you are looking for http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1240130

If you get a phone w/ics system dump before anything else please, if you need a hand lots of people here will help (or on irc) but since moto still has the d3 listed as "evaluating" for ics and haven't even started working on a build I would say the rep is more than likely mistaken. Hopefully not but if moto had an ics build for the d3 I imagine we would have heard about a soak or something. As for your question I would probably try the root for d4 and if that didn't work check out what they're using on the nexus etc
If you do get ICS please tweet Hash. We really could benefit from it.

We would still have a locked bootloader and the same kernel issues though. I'd put money on the rep being wrong, but I'd like to be proven wrong.
so what version of android did you end up getting on the d3?
Sent from my A100 using Tapatalk 2
You folks were right. He was wrong. It has 2.3.4.
It runs pretty fast, compares well to the DX2. I wanted CM ROM on it, but none are completely working. Camera has issues GSM FCs and so forth. I just wish my DX2 would work. Haven't used a physical keyboard in a while either.
What do you folks think of your Droid 3s?

I bought my D3 FOR the keyboard. I came from an enV touch and the thought of a touchscreen keyboard that wasn't 100% perfect made me shiver. Looking back, I would definitely have gone with a SGS II. I didn't know anything about the D3's bootloader being locked and the full touch screen is definitely worth the unlocked bootloader. That being said, I still love the keyboard. It's better than any I have ever used.
I don't hate my Droid 3. It runs my ICS roms rather smoothly and the only thing that I wished worked is Google Chrome. I use the camera but I found that I have not wanted to use the video recorder since switching; even if it DID work.
If you want a CM ROM that is pretty stable, I'd recommend 7.2 found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1308924
It's a bit more stable than CM9, though it still has some bugs. Stable enough for a daily driver in my opinion.
My d3 is alright but if I was sent one now with any option of sending back either for a different phone or terminate a contract(within 30 days or whatever and setup a new one) I would jump @ the chance, just because its a little old, 1g ram would be nice but imo it's like dual core phones, 1 core is wasted 90% of the time, upgradable to ics would be very nice too, custom kernel would be nicest though(htc,lg etc etc). I guess what I'm saying is its decent but I wouldn't buy one now.
Sent from my XT860 using XDA
I'd say droid 3 is all about the keyboard. Without the keyboard, there would be many better phones. Phones with 1GB ram, unlocked bootloader and a better screen.
However, I'd rather have a keyboard than have those ^ things without a keyboard .
It seems to run faster, and more smooth than my Droid X2. It's ugly though, and it will take some getting used to a physical keyboard again. I have it rooted, radiocom hacked. I want to tweak the camera, but the thread is confusing me a bit as to which zip to use, or which edits to make to build.pro and the XML file. I would prefer to edit rather than install a zip as I don't really want a bootstrap on the phone.
App Brain is making me frustrated though, since Fast Web Installer will not log in.
So far, I am loving this.
Another heartbreak. If D3 doesn't gets ICS by July, I'll let it go.

Hello everyone,
I'm new here,
Starting this thread so that beginners and new users (like me) can know about what people have done with their monsters and what they are capable of!
Tell me about your favorite top 10 apps and must haves!
Reason for choosing Droid 3?
I'd also like to know if some serious droidians can provide links on how to achieve what they have!
Would also like if they can tell users like me what should be done with their Droid 3 if they just took it out of the box!
I have a Motorola Droid 3 Verizon [XT862 (its obvious but still)],
5.6.890.xt862.verizon.en.us (I think its stock rom, but I could be wrong)
Using it in India.
And thats all I know about it.
Its not even rooted.
My reason for choosing Droid 3:
I wanted something solid, which felt like a monster in my hand, not like the new phones being thin and light as a paper, I needed something heavy! The large screen, 8 mp cam, 16+16 Gb memory are just add-ons to the list,
the main reason being the 5 row physical keyboard. I did not find any other phone with k/b with such screen and cam. And Motorola is well known for being modded and customized!
Share anything and everything you can, it is always helpful to someone!
Tell us about different processes of flashing, about roms, latest updates and so on.
Very excited to hear from y'all!
Hope. to get some really interesting and helpful posts!
Don't forget to have fun while doing this and help as many people as you can
Thanks a lot.
Really?
Really guys,
no one?
I was hoping to get some really good feedback!
Kinda old phone! I got it because i wanted the original but went with the Droid Incredible for processor. So I saw the droid 3 and it looked just as good.
Phone is end of life. These discussions have been had many times before. People are waiting to upgrade to a better phone.
Sent from my DROID3 using xda app-developers app
Droid Incredible?
Isn't it a cdma phone? With 1Ghz processor?
-------------------------------------------------------------
Oh, I see.
But buddy, this discussion is not only about the features of the phone but more about what can one do or should do if they just got it.
This phone is not available at the place I'm using it. Specs are incredible, except for the software update.
I do not see a single phone with a keyboard like this with such a screen over here.
Even though it is an old phone, I got it regardless of its lousy software update.
And therefore I wanted to know, what people are doing with their droid3 regarding software?
I wanted to know which rom are they using and what apps are must haves!
Thats all.
Thank you all for reading.
Rom toolbox, safestrap3, thats all i recommend for must have apps.
Run stock for a while, and then put on safestrap and see what roms you like.
You can also use the ubuntu install app in the market if you want a linux distribution, worked ok on my droid3.
If you like at&t or tmobile, use the radio hack to skip verizon.

you shouldn't loose unlock but if the rom wasn't dev'd for your specific device..ie..xt862,xt860 ect you might have to flash the proper radio and build prop
Is anybody else waiting for HTC to release the 4.2.2 base and seeing what the devs do with it before flashing a custom ROM? I've had my One for about 2 weeks now and it's still unrooted and running the stock ROM (this is the longest I've gone so far).
Just wondering if I'm alone in thinking that the devs will come up with better ROMs based on 4.2 than they currently have out for 4.1
Other than quick toggles, I didn't see many stand out features vin the preview.
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
4.2 isn't a huge step forward. There really is no point in waiting to root and unlock. It's still 'JellyBean' with a few extra features so the difference will be minimal, but I'm anxious for those quick settings myself. I'd say root and S-Off now to get it over with so you can flash immediately when 4.2 comes out.
I was going to wait too. But I got my phone two days ago and ended up flashing two days ago as well...

I feel the same way, I've never gone this long without rooting a phone/tablet, it's usually a week at most.
This is the same boat I am in. I am not doing any of the over the air updates so it will be easier to root when it gets to that point. I am actually quite impressed with the phone (coming from the Evo 4g), I've actually thought about keeping this thing stock...then I remember that it will only get faster if I root and flash.
Yup, stock and not rooted. Waiting for the 4.2.2 and hopefully a working flashable rom of the Google Edition One with everything stable. I really want lockscreen widgets. This is the first phone where I'm not willing to sacrifice the stability of the phone, because sense 5 is pretty damn good. I'd definitely prefer an equally stable AOSP rom though.

Well.... if you look at some posts here from yesterday (2 posts up ) you will see the statement.... " Waiting for the 4.2.2 "
I waited a few weeks and started thinking that HTC dev unlock will wipe the device so I might as well get started. That and the process will be quicker once Sprint releases and development starts working to fix any of the unintended features on the new release.

Hate the way Sammy has locked down their stuff, I used to be a big fan but I'm loving the g2. It was apiece of cake to root and put recovery on and the battery kicks ass. Currently running crom and it's great but I'll probably start experimenting soon.
Was that way on my Nexus, and still am a bit on my G2, though not AS much. Well, I can't say that completely. I usually decide at some point to see what's out there, then I'll go through 3 or 4 ROMs to see what features are on each before settling in on one for a while, til I see another thread with another release with new goodies. Currently on C-Rom 7.1 and..aside from a couple tiny things I wouldn't mind seeing, it's been stable as I could ask for over the last two days and doing well for me.

i just got out of rehab for it!its a terrible disease!like a enraged monkey on my back!
I wonder if the new Google music issue will cause people to flash less? Only 4 deauthorizations a year would be tough to stay under.

Yeah that's gonna suck if that's true.
I have the crackflashing sickness as well. Thought I could get rid of it by picking a ROM (CloudyG3) and deleting all other nandroids (PA, Mahdi) but that doesn't work either. With apps auto downloading after entering your google account info it's really easy to do a clean install. I think I got it licked this time though.
Update:i seem to be doing well i have been running stock unrooted for like 2 days now like the program says one day at a time

I'm addicted to reboots due to constant tweaking using xposed  These days it's easier for me to stick with one very stable and friendly ROM, and just tweak it however I want using xposed, compared to finding a ROM that has everything set the way I like.
I folded i just rooted my phone still have no custom recovery tho!
