Ok, first up - Stock ICS 4.0.4 ROM, custom kernel (HydraCore v4.3), nothing changed on phone recently prior to this occurring.
Some time during the night (presumably) my Note has decided it does not work when it comes to mobile data. On waking I found the stock weather widget had not updated, the stock browser would not load any pages and the Facebook app said could not connect. Over wifi, these all work fine. Calls and SMS work fine. The weird thing is the status bar indicates I'm connected to H+, H, or 3G, and the upstream and downstream indicator arrows light up whenever an app tries to access the net as though all is fine. I find it odd that this has happened without anything being changed or touched on the phone, and with it working flawlessly for months with the current setup.
The website for my provider indicates no faults located either at home or work, could this still be network related?
Short of loading ICS again, I've tried everything I can think of. Cycle power, double check and toggle all data/network settings, reset APN, etc.
Just thought I'd check here for any ideas or a simple fix I may be overlooking before I go flashing ROMS (which may or may not fix it).
Thanks for any help,
Nick
Did you try with another sim card dude.

That might be an EFS partition corrupt, go to settings >> about device >> status >> IMEI
see if your IMEI is there or not

I upgraded to R3A last week and so far everything's gone smoothly.
The only thing that's bugging me is that the network icon (H) spends most of its time greyed out (see screenshot). I only ever saw it in that state briefly in previous firmware.
It doesn't seem to affect connection or call quality. It's not indicative of a bad signal, as it'll still go back to 2.5G when 3G is lacking. The resulting G will usually be grey as well.
Presumably it means something's less than optimal, but I can't find any info about it anywhere.
Clues anybody?
Are you sure you are able to connect to a data connection, for web browsing etc? Because the last time this happened to me, i was not able to connect, and had to do a hard reset to get it fixed.

Data connection works fine. There appears to be no issue with functionality of anything.
The set of "custom" status icons (colored ones) doesn't contain icon for HSDPA (or something like this, dataconnection available in you location) so it is shown as standard icon (only black&white). I bet if you have only EDGE or GPRS available, there will be the same icon as the others are.
it should mean that data connection is unavailable at the moment (because it can get back in a later time) or something is wrong with your data connection (that is why we have sometimes to reset the phone to make it work back).
Guys,
I have a Xperia for almost one month, and last night it suddenly stopped to be connected with the network. I tried to connect manually, and it worked, but the calls still couldn't be done! One hour later, the same situation started again and my phone can not connect to the network.
I don't know what to do anymore, I have already hard reset the phone, and nothing happened!!
Help me!

I get exactly the same thing, running Jacks latest lite-ROM, based on the R3A. Connection icons are greyed out, but I still have an excellent data connection.
What's more is that after a fairly long call, the phone usually looks like it's in flight mode. However, if I try calling myself from my second phone it works just fine, and I can recieve sms-es. But, I cannot send texts or call out, since the phone thinks it's cell-module is turned off. This always corrects itself after a soft reset, and usually passes by itself after about ten minutes. But the connection icons stay greyed out.
If I try to turn the phone-module back on, nothing happens.
Weird, innit?

Is it possible for an App to interfere with the WiFi connection? I've downloaded plenty of third party, torrented apps and I've been noticing that my WiFi will work for a few pages and then stop loading, throwing up an error saying "Web page not available" showing the little Android. This would cause me to disable WiFi and go strictly with 3G. Enabling WiFi later would help with a few more pages until it wanted to die again.
After I uninstalled ALL of my apps and unrooted the phone, I've noticed that the WiFi works again (so far at least). I still have the same 1 bar signal from across the house, but it isn't giving any more errors.
I constantly used task killer to free up memory, so I don't think those apps would have made a difference in the sense that they may have been taking up some bandwidth or the such.
Any clues guys? Thanks for any help.
Same
I have the same problem. I rooted and did the settings.db. My wifi will turn on and connect but 20-30 seconds later it just turns off on its own. I haven't unrooted it to see if it fixes it though.
How did you unroot yours?
Thanks
Like, I'm pretty sure that's just karma, dude. Harsh vibes from people like me that make software for a living reaching out and disrupting your chakra centers. And your WiFis.
That and using Task Killer in the first place. Not needed, causes more problems than it solves (and it solves almost nothing on Galaxy S).
I am in the same boat--just started noticing it today when I got home from work and turned the phone back on only to see I wasn't connected to wifi. When I connected to my network again I noticed the 3G icon stayed on the screen with the wifi connection symbol, where the wifi icon used to replace the 3g icon. After a little while, it was gone.
I have rooted and removed some of the AT&T apps but nothing else. I havent sideloaded any apps either. It usually take me a couple of tries to connect to my router (WRT54GL). Sometimes it also seems that my phone turns off wifi by itself.
I hope this isn't a symptom of the battery cover antenna. Does your WiFi signal show as weak in the strength readout?

It does actually turn off wifi by itself! I did the following last night and haven't seen an issue since. As a new user, I can't post links: androidforums.com/samsung-captivate/130163-wifi-connection-turns-off-when-sleep-mode-default.html
From androidforums.com:
By default the wi-fi setting is set to go to sleep (and use cellular data instead) when the screen is off, which will most likely happen while you are streaming music as well as other things. To change it so the wi-fi never turns off, go into the phone's menu -> wireless and network -> wi-fi settings -> tap the menu button and select advanced which has an option for wi-fi sleep policy that had been defaulted to sleep "when screen turns off". There you have the option to change it to "never" or "never when plugged in".
Did a little more playing around with it, finally had to reset my router to maintain any type of consistent connection after restarting the phone. One weird thing is that my old iPhone wasn't able to connect to the router consistently last night until the reset either--it has never had any issues in the past.
After the reset, the captivate did maintain a consistent connection--I browsed a few websites and streamed part of a show from my computer using Allshare.
This morning when I turned on the phone wifi wasn't connected so I went into the settings and looks like the phone had attempted to connect unsuccessfully. I clicked it again to connect and it connected without any issue and was fine until I left for work. The whole thing seems a little wonky, as well as it should automatically try to re-connect if it fails the first time if network is in range, or at least give you an alert.
I just set up tdogz suggestion above, so we will see if it helps.

Haha sorry bud, but after browsing for some good videos to put on the phone my curiosity made me type in "android" in the torrent search box. I was amazed I could do such things.

Before I unrooted the WiFi wouldn't work with full or low bars, not sure of the strength readout.

Running into the same issue, I am positive it is a software issue. It only seemed to happen after I flashed my phone with the Odin One click downloader. Dunno if it is coincidence or not. Going to try clearing the user data from the recovery window to see if it helps. I also notices on the power widget, i cant control GPS from there, blue tooth as well i think.

Yeah, user data reset did not do it. Reflashing now.

Huzza! I figured my issue out, may be yours as well. Did you do the sideload hack with the settings.db? Turns out you need to change the owner of settings.db to system:
Code:
# chown system settings.db
After that, I was good to go. The logic behind this is that settings.db tracks more settings than just if you can sideload apps or not. I'm betting the system is trying to change a value in that file and it cant after the hack, so various systems fail.
Annoying problem that started yesterday: on cell signal the bars are white and I've got no data connection, but on WiFi the bars are green and I've got connection.
Originally, I was running CyanogenMod 7.1. I checked the data settings, I did a battery pull, I wiped the phone and reinstalled Cyanogen, and I wiped the phone and installed a rooted stock N1 ROM. I even grabbed a ROM from MoDaCo and updated the baseband to 5.12.00.08. Still no data on mobile.
No dice all around. Anyone know of anything else I can try? I really hope it isn't a hardware problem with the radio, because I'm out of my warranty.
Green means you are in connection with the Google server (so you can access market sync gmail etc) and white means you only have connection to the internet. This is a feature that was added in on gingerbread.
I turned on my phone this morning and tried to connect to YouTube but the connection to the server timed out. The same thing happened with all of my other apps that require a data connection except for Google+ and the browser (which will load the default Google home page and nothing else). I definitely have a data connection because there is a 3g icon in my status bar. I'm not sure if this will help. But the 3g and the signal icons are normally green but they are currently white, which has nothing to do with my location. I tried wiping the cache but it didn't work. Has anybody else experienced this problem? Thanks.
What's your phone set up (rom or any tweaks). Usually if your running a 2.3 rom the white means that your not connected through ur gmail or google talk i believe. Check your settings go to settings>account&sync> make sure background data is checked.

Can you make phone calls? If you try and call and get a message saying "error 16", you will need to call sprint and have them reset you to a tower. I've had to do this twice recently. Check to see if your PRL reverted to an older one. I tried to just do an update of the PRL, but that didn't work...had to call Sprint. You will need to be on a Sense Rom in order for the process to work. I use/d a NFX version.
If not, do the advice from above to make sure that your data is turned on and that things are syncing properly.
I can make phone calls and my PRL is 60665 but I have no idea whether or not that's outdated. I'm running Cyanogenmod 7.0.3, so if I need to call sprint I'll just flash the stock HTC Hero ROM and Sense UI that's on their website. Background data is checked but once I had the problem, I've turned off all data connections because they drain battery and they're useless to me at the moment.
Hi there everybody,
a few days ago my P970 started to go crazy a bit. It suddenly lost Wifi connection and won't reconnect. The Wifi symbol in the status bar looks like it is connecting, but nothing happens. Additionally, under the wifi settings, the on-off switch of the wifi is light grey (greyed out) and does not react anymore on my input.
As I could not find any further information on this topic, I decided to do a factory reset followed by a reflash of the V30B (Europe open; Android 4.0.4) and another factory reset as well as format of the SD-card. After that I did not encounter any problems until I finally wanted to customize my phone again with apps etc.
Last night again I lost the connection to Wifi and just decided to see what will happen. Until now (16 hours later) the Wifi icon is still kind of showing a connection attempt and is flashing non-stop and under settings the wifi-switch is still grey.
Anyone got an idea what could be wrong with my phone? Hardware or Software problem? If I leave Wifi switched off, there is no problem with the phone, but it sucks if one cannot use the wifi...

Well maybe think about, what MODs (like PimpMyROM) and apps you installed. Maybe one of them causes the strange behaviour... If you say it works, till you start to customize it, it probably is a problem with any customization...

Make sure something will trigger Wi-Fi AP. If yes, Wi-Fi will not turn on, and the button is greyed out.
Excuse my bad English.
