HBOgo was working since day 1 for me. I believe I loaded it from TiBu tho.
Thank you OP!
I have been using the XFinity TV app and it works very well on JB but I will try the HBO apk.
I checked last night again and it's working now. I guess they were just having some startup issues
Does HBO Go display 720p video for anyone here? The video quality looks to be sub-480p.
I've tried HBO Go on my PC, Xbox 360, iPod Touch 4, Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, and Nexus 7. Xbox 360 is the only version that displays 720p video.

It looks low quality for me too (first few episodes of Deadwoord).
Does anyone have issues with the n7 not timing out and going to sleep? I've fallen asleep watching HBOGO and woken up several hours later and the screen is still on with no media playing. I think it happened with other apps too. n7 is plugged in at the time.
This update was just recently released and I just wanted to point out some new improvements that I have noticed. Before this update steaming live media (e.g. twit.tv) from a chrome tab on my laptop to my chromecast device was extremely choppy. Since the new update video and audio is impressively smooth but I still have to use standard 480p. If anyone has noticed anything new about chromecast recently, feel free to post any tips or interesting features you may have discoverd. Thanks
Hmmmm...I need to give this a try. Just a week or so ago when I would try playing a local 720 mp4 in a tab, it would play just fine, but it would lag all to hell..let's see what kinda results I can produce... I'll report back in a little while! Thx!

Where is your build # located? Idk if mine has been updated, but it is working really well on 720p. I pushed the 720 high bit rate it was a little choppy, but still watchable. 720 plays well for me now. This is on twitch.tv

If you install the Chromecast app for Android, it will tell you when you click on the Chromecast's settings.
I'm noticing that Moto X is much less fluid running hd video than my iphone 5. I'm hoping this is something on my end because It's pretty much a killer. The difference is crazy between the two devices.
Anyone else have an iphone they can compare hd video playback? For example the same trailer off Apple Trailers app and Google Play.
Thanks.
EDIT: ok this is clearly a issue with ART runtime in 4.4. It makes video playback extremely choppy. Again, this is a clear indication that ART runtime is not suitable for end user at this time on moto x.
After going back to Dalvik, video was noticeable smoother.
I take that back, I'm still noticing really pathetic video playback on youtube at 720p.
I don't have any choppy playback on YouTube (HD) videos.

Anyone else experiencing this or know of a solution as my stock uk moto x is also pretty choppy when playing hd video
I can't replicate this problem, on ART or otherwise.

My video playback is flawless with 720p videos, 4.4.2 Rogers Canada build.
Had the exact same problem with HD videos on my non dev 4.4 Verizon moto x.
I updated to 4.4.2 couple days ago and now youtube works flawlessly.
I'm on dalvik right now. But I had the problem on dalvik and art on 4.4
I think it is network issues occasionally. Cellular or WiFi. Thought my x was playing choppy and buffer hella mad the other morning but my note3 was doing it also. A couple hours later everything was fine. And BTW, ive been running g fun throttle cellular on x and going back and forth on WiFi/cellular on my note3. I was pulling down 30+ mb/s cellular both phones and 20+ WiFi. Neither played YouTube smooth that morning.

Hey man. I think I know what you mean... Anytime I'm watching an HD video on YouTube I can't help but noticed choppiness to it. Its especially visible on nice slow panning shots like the :
HD HERO 2 360 pan shot test: http://youtu.be/rKmdIxvt5QI
Also many of the shots in this vid : The 1992 Ferrari 512 TR: A /DRIVE Film.: http://youtu.be/ZLNJ_RLWlmI
I never quite remember this phenomena on my previous iPhone 4 .. Could it be that these videos are 24fps and its having trouble showing it on a 60hz device?? Is it the app? I have a rogers moto x on 4.4.2.
I have 2 tablets and am kind of torn witch to give away as a gift to someone else. I have a nook hd+ with cm10 on it, all in all it runs so smoothly, no apps crash thus far that I have installed but unfortunately nook hd+'s have no webcam, Then I have another 8 inch tab that does have camera but some apps crash but it has a front facing camera.
Archos 80 G9 VS Nook Color HD+
Witch one would you keep?
i had both and, omg, display is not even comparable! keep the HD+ and make selfies with any phone
It depends, the Hd has a great screen and the latest Cm's run great, but it lacks the camera. If the person you 're planning to gift doesn't care about the camera give the HD. If the camera is important, give the other tablet.
Btw, reading the review here http://techcrunch.com/2011/10/18/archos-80-g9-tablet-review-fun-but-ugly/ it seems that the HD+ is superior in all aspects, (except the camera of course). It has also great support and runs the latest android version.
+1 I can love without a camera but I need a nice screen.

So, basically every streaming service I have tried only play back in SD, not HD. Is this a common issue for the S2? Is there any way to get it to work in HD?
I hate to say it but if not this might be going back to BestBuy today :/
Thanks!
Netflix works fine in HD here. Is your subscription set up for HD?

Sure am. Can you verify that HD works with this link? Should play a stream that tells you what resolution and bitrate you are actually seeing. Mine stays at 720x480, while my Nexus 7 shows 1920x1080. Bitrates are 1750 vs 5000+ respectively.

Oh, also, I am on the 8.0" WiFi US model if that matters.
Looks like I found my answer. The tablet is not on the Netflix HD list. So I guess none of them can play it.

i already brought this up in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/tab-s2/help/netflix-hd-tab-s2-t3274295 . I'm quite angry since the tab s2 is marketed as an ipad air 2 competitor and it doesnt support full HD streaming. If you want to find out more about the certification process just google netflix android HD DRM. The thing is, the tablet has to be certified by Netflix. I know for a fact, that the SoC, the Exynos 5433, supports widevine Level 1 DRM technology (basically the lowest is level 3 which wouldn't be enough for HD) and HDCP 1.x which also should be enough for HD streaming. Youtube support 1080p60 videos so it's definitely not a performance issue of hardware. I suspect that the unlocked bootloader is a problem for the content providers, so if Samsung was to lock the bootloader and renegotiate with Netflix or at least ask what exactly is missing for it to be certified and add that through an update. I mean we pay for a premium tablet and a premium service, we should get what we pay for. I made contact with Netflix and Samsung, they said they would look into it. Quite curious if they actually do something, i'm still hoping! If this is an issue for you, feel free to contact themselves, so this problem can be solved, though I guess it's mostly Samsung that has to do something with the next update.

I'm also only getting 480p on Netflix, but on my unrooted, KNOX-not-tripped, SM-T810, it has no trouble achieving Widevine Level 1 DRM:
Code:
2622 WVCdm D Instantiating CDM.
2622 WVCdm I CdmEngine::QueryStatus
2622 WVCdm I Level3 Library Dec 11 2014 16:13:16
2622 WVCdm W Could not read /data/mediadrm/IDM1013/ay64.dat2: No such file or directory
2622 WVCdm D OEMCrypto_Initialize Level 1 success. I will use level 1.
2622 WVCdm I L3 Terminate.
Google Play, on the other hand, is able to achieve Level 1 as well and streams HD just fine (noticeably better quality than Netflix, even with Google's way-too-high compression). Maybe HD is being blocked on Netflix's side? They've blocked "unsupported" devices based on the device name in the past.
This device is more than able to run HD video on netflix and hulu. However I ran across an issue where I had to delete the following file for hulu to work at all. Worth a try for those of you who are rooted. Just make a backup first.
I deleted this file and hulu works.
