just wanted to see what everyone thinks about the button layout.
should we keep it?
should we change it?
how can we change the button layout ourselfs?
is there any progress on making an application to allow us to change our button layout?
what does everyone think?
im used to the button layout now but i would love to customize it to my liking.
There needs to be a third option. "Allow for customization"
Everyone perceives their needs differently.
EDIT: Should also mention that I'm fine with it the way it is, but the way your post is worded makes the third option necessary.
Leave it,
Its perfect.
leave it. Only add button combination for running apps.. If everyone's is different, you will have a hard time giving directions based on buttons.
i like it the way it is as well. the only thing nicer would be more buttons; if we were able to get the red button to "go home, then sleep" it would allow long press camera to be used to display running applications.
a program to modify the keymap was in the works. don't know what happened to it.
i think it would be awsome if the keymap were like this. power is power, volume is volume, 1 tap camera goes to landscape, long press camera goes to camera, left d-pad is back, right d-pad is forward, up d-pad is menu, down or center d-pad to go home, red end button as is, green button as is.

can't change dpad function - need it for many games. for those who don't play games, would be great. once again, individualizable keymap seems best.
I personally like it.
We used to have an older configuration but this current one seems very usable making efficient use of the keys we have.

If you mean the original, menu on the volume slider, that was THE worst. Last year I quit Android as soon as I started because I hated using the volume slider all the time.

personally i was in love with the old layout
i loved how holding the home button showed all running apps and made switching between them a breeze
if we could somehow incorporate the old layout
id be all for it!
even though i'm accustomed to the current one

it would be cool to have that button layout and make the center d-pad to swith back to the current button layout so we can use the d-pad for games and whatnot.

That just seems overly complicated.
When I first switched to Android, I hated the layout, but it's grown on my now. Only thing I wish is for a spare button that could be made into a search button so I could have working quick compose in chomp sms.

Hi guys,
So, as the thread says, i am having a problem with screen positioning, its landscape mode and i want it to go portrait mode, BECAUSE i have a damaged X1, some microchip is damaged, and the only buttons working is the turn on button and the camera button, but everything which goes for the touch is working perfectly.
SO, when i start ANDROID system, i always get it in landscape mode, and as none of my buttons work, i cant just "slide out and slide in" the telephone to change the view, so is there any way to change the default starting view ? maybe to change some kind of code or line in settings ?

Yes , it will be, but i tried to repair it, i repairmans told, that this device is unrepairable... So i either throw it away or manage to use android ... Can anyone help ?
On some of the iPad knockoffs running android, they put only the home button on the device, and put software buttons for back and menu in the top right of the screen. Maybe you can find some way to get that?

As for the rotate, when I press the menu button on the home screen, it seems to realise that the keypad is in fact closed and rotate the correct way. So if you can get the menu button up there, then press that on the homescreen and it should rotate to the correct orientation.

You can maybe remap the keys like this:
Camera focus = back
Camera = home
Power = menu
But I don't know how to do it.
Sent from my MSM using XDA App
Camera focus is already mapped to back button in "Froyo FRG83 - Android 2.2.1 Beta-Release [06-11-2010] from neopeek", but camera is mapped to turn off.
Also with that configuration, how would you turn off your device or put it into standby?

Take out the battery to turn off.
Have a timer that enters standby after some minutes if nobody touch it and listen to all working keys so he can exit standby.
And if I would have his X1 I would be pleased if it could run Android.

It's simulate pressing of power button.

Nice! I'd be more interested if you could do unlock via soft keys as we had in Hero , i.e. home and menu, as I find the power button is too recessed for easy access.
Not sure if softkeys would be too easy to trigger by mistake tho ??

There is a hack for this but the menu key etc on the hd are not active when the screen is locked so it doesn't work. I did it today but you have to press power then the keys become active and you can use menu etc to unlock. Pointless as you still need to use power button first. The hero's keys were hard buttons as is the desire. It worked great on the desire. Unless anyone knows a way to have them active while locked? My power buttons a nightmare as it's not very clicky and really recessed. My wife's hd power button is much easier to use. Anyone know a way to have the soft keys active all the time?

In technical terms,yes- it would circumvent the process of having to use one's digit to find aforementioned hard power button and then depress said button.

Dunno if this is doable but have you seen the screen lock on the new nexus that was seen at recent web 2.0 summit. Its kinda like the effect you get when u turn off an old crt TV. Could you implement that instead of the current fade effect? Ta

Im working on porting gweedo767's touch recovery to the incredible. I do not own an incredible so i need people to give me feedback so i know what to change. Once i get a good working fakeflash i will release an installable recovery image. If anyone wants to donate to me for me to get my own incredible that would be much appreciated and will make the process quicker.
Here is a youtube video I made of how it works: ------> VIDEO
4 ways to use recovery:
volume rockers
soft keys on bottom of screen
capacitive buttons
swipe gestures (up/down = scroll && left = back && right = select)
This will not install ANYTHING on your phone. It is just a test drive to see what it is like. This loads the files into the ram and runs them from there. As soon as you reboot everything will be back to the way it was. This does not change/alter ANY files on your phone.
I need to know what sort of things i need to change like:
swipe sensitivity
font size
order of soft keys on bottom of screen
anything else......
Please let me know how i can make this better

There is a known bug in ClockworkMod 5.5.0.4 that long file names can POSSIBLY cause backups to hang. There is a solution/workaround:
boot into recovery
try to make a backup (no matter if it passes or fails proceed to next step)
either through terminal emulator or through adb run the following command EXACTLY:
Code:
touch /sdcard/clockworkmod/.hidenandroidprogress
NOTICE THE PERIOD AND LACK OF EXTENSION.
and it is .hidenandroidprogress NOT .hideandroidprogress __notice the letter "n"__

Hello i tried your recovery and it has a few issues one being major. First off the up scroll button (the one that looks like a house) seems to select items instead of scroll up in the list. Also while on the subject of the buttons imho there a little small, and would look better more rounded, perhaps just putting a ring arround them.
If you swipe to the right on the screen it reboots the phone.
Ok now on to the major issue, it only backed up boot, system, and recovery. It did not back up data, datadata, cache, sd-ext, android.secure, or generate an md5 sum.
Other that that its good. It is not what i was expecting when i tried it. I was expecting to touch on the menu where the options are instead of using softkeys to navigate and select, but i still like this better than having to use vol keys and trackball, great job so far.

It is touch... You swipe to scroll. Swipe your finger up and down to scroll. Swipe right to select and SWIPE LEFT to go back. And thank you for your feedback.
Edit: and also that backup issue is a bug in clockworkmod. You have to put a file call:
.hidenandroidprogress in the /sdcard/clockworkmod/ folder. Notice the period and lack of extension.

Ok i see let me try this again.
Ok now i get it. Lol ok then heres my bug report.
Swipe left and right are way to sensitive. When scrolling up and down if you go just the slightest bit to the left or right, it either goes back or selects an item.
As i said earlier the up softkey selects items instead of moving up in the list.
Also as i said earlier not backing up everything or generating an md5.
Other than that it seems great.

i added the fix to the backup problem in the OP. add that file and itll solve that issue. that is a known issue in the base code of clockworkmod 5.x, im working on making a code fix for that. the workaround works fine for now tho. can you tell me what the "home" "menu" "back" & "search" capacitive buttons do in recovery? that way i can re-arrange the soft keys to line up with the corresponding capacitive button.
im guessing back = go back, search = select, but does home = scroll up or scroll down?
thanks

Home scrolls down, menu does nothing just vibes, back goes back, search selects. Also the on screen back key seems to select instead of go back like the on screen up key does.
EDIT: actually the menu button seems to go back also. Its hard to tell. I think when hitting home, menu, back, search, it is also picking up my finger slightly moving left or right when i hit it.
Also for the backup fix, that is just creating a file called .hiddenandroidprogress right? That file was already present in my cwm folder before i ever even tried this recovery. I ran the command anyways and tried to back up again but still only boot recovery and system.

yes .hidenandroidprogress. what it does is stop cwm from enumerating the file list that it is backing up. if it gets stuck after that then i have to go in and debug the filesystem points i have probably as they are wrong for data, etc.

This is only a bootable test, it changes nothing on your phone. You flash this it temp boots to the touch recovery, and then when you exit the touch recovery you will be exactly the way it was before flashing it. It is not permanent.
Hello,
after the sources for the Z2 Pro have been released and good Custom ROMs are possible, I would love to buy this beautiful device. I've read alot about this U-Touch thing, where you navigate only by using the Home Button... and I don't like it. So my question is: Does this phone also have the normal Back, Home and Recents hardware buttons?
Thanks!
Hi,
Yes, you can add on screen buttons in "Developer Options" menu. At least you can do it with z2 (non pro). I guess you will have this option too.
So there are no "real" hardware buttons to the left and the right of the home button?
On screen buttons are in developer options in both models, make sure you reboot to effect the changes.
Thanks for your answers. I know about the possiblity to show the On Screen Buttons, but that's not what I wanted to know.
I'm curious if the device also has dedicated hardware buttons (not on screen) for Back and Recents, or just the U-Touch button?
It only has 1 physical button on the front..
I'd love to see an app or even integration in a custom rom to be able to configure the behaviour of the front button. What are the chances this will become reality?
It already lets you configure what the button does. You can also preset actions to open specific apps.

But that is in the ZUI ROM right? I'd like to see this in a separate app or built into custom ROM so it can also be used outside ZUI.
Now that the sources are available someone who knows what he is doing should be able to pull this off.
Is there a way to make swipe left on the u-touch button act like a back button? Maybe there would be a way to have it open an scripted action that acts as back button?
Edit: Just figured out that short tap is back, so my problem is solved!
Thanks, this helped me out!
I'm looking for a phone with this same exact button. I'm always super stunned how retarded iphones are compared to my $200 phone.
