Hi
I'm not sure if this is related to just my particular computer or a general charging bug. Several times I've plugged the Nexus 4 into my computer USB port to charge overnight (okay it's slower by USB but overnight it doesn't matter and convenient to use the computer USB port) only to find it hasn't charge but continued to discharged.
My computer USB ports are powered while the computer is in Sleep mode (suspend to RAM) and I've charged many gadgets over night with no problem, including the Nexus 7.
To replicate the bug:
1) Computer is on, plug the Nexus 4 in to charge, Nexus confirms it is charging by icon in notification tray and it will start to charge
2) Computer goes to sleep, Nexus 4 still shows it is charging, however at this point it is no longer charging, and actually starts to discharge quicker than normal.
3) While computer is still in sleep mode, unplug the USB cable from the Nexus, plug it back in, phone now starts to charge normally.
There seems to be a bug when the computer sleeps and disconnects the USB data part of the connection, the Nexus gets a bit confused and stops charging even though it still indicates it is charging. I suspect the faster discharge I've seen is because the Nexus 4 thinks it is powered and doesn't deep sleep as it would on only battery power.
An HTC One X, a Nexus 7, an MP3 player and numerous other gadgets have all continued to charge normally after point 2.
Thought it worth pointing out in case others have similar issues and wonder why the phone isn't charging.
Regards
Phil
Noticed the same just a day ago, went to take my phone off charging from my laptop and was very surprise/d/ that i had lost 2-3%

Same here with Mac. Once goes to sleep it drains phone even though icon shows its charging.
I've noticed this too. The Nexus 4 is my only device that won't charge from my PC while it's sleeping.
Edit: Actually I need to use the PC, so this isn't going to work
Had this happen too. Is there a fix? or is it just like that
Thanks for this. I wandered why my phone was 0% one night I had it on the charger all night.
Mine shows the charging symbol on the statusbar, but at the battery screen in settings it shows it isn't charging,
Screenshot included.
Screenshot was taken when my laptop was in sleep mode with my nexus 4 connected over usb.
Had the same thing happen to me.
Well, after JB update 4.1.2, the same happens with my GNex. So it must be OS related.

This is super annoying as that's how I've charged my phones for years. Now I have to put the stock wall wart somewhere and have an extra long USB cable to reach my desk. Sometimes I forget about this bug when developing stuff and it says "charging" so I wake up with a dead phone
I'd noticed this issue when charging with a battery pack, though I haven't tried it from my computer USB port yet. One thing - if the phone charge is above 50% it seems to be fine, it's only when it's below 50% that it doesn't recharge from the battery pack. Has anyone noticed something similar when charging from a computer USB - does it work if the phone battery is over 50%?
Same here--my Nexus 4 doesn't charge by a sleeping computer. Every other phone worked fine (though I had to connect my iPhones before the computer was asleep for them to continue charging after it was put to sleep). I've tried this when my Nexus was over 50% and with two different cables. It also worked with my Galaxy Nexus from OS 4.1 to 4.2.
I have the same thing when I try to charge it over a powered USB hub (you definitly get 5V from it) while the PC is turned off... It shows that it is charging but it is not.. really annyoing especially when you use it as your alarm in the morning (don't ask, that is how I noticed it the first time ). Never had a problem when the PC is turned on though...
something like this happens to me but charging with AC adapter...it would say connected to AC then after awhile when i wake the phone up, it would say charging with USB but it is connected to AC adapter...to get back to charging as connected to AC, i would have to unplug and replug...weird
Try different USB Ports and other USB cable.
I have a notebook which has on the left side 2 USB ports and on the right side 1 USB port.
The mobile doesn't charge with original USB cable on any of these USB ports.
But if I use a standard USB Cable and plug it into the USB port on the right side, mobile gets charged over night.
However, when plugging in any of the USB ports on the left side, it won't get charged.
(Left side is sharing the 500mA, right side won't)
And yes, my computer is put to sleep, just keep the USB ports alive
Yup is also happens to me. I think it is a bug, might as well use the mains as it works better and it charges very quickly.
4.2.1 has a lot of bugs that needs to be sorted out in my opinion, and this is one of them.

It's a bug with the Nexus 4. I have tried the same USB port with a:
1. Nexus 7
2. Galaxy Nexus
3. Galaxy Note
4. Motorola Charm
All except the Nexus 4 work fine charging when computer is in sleep.
Hi
Fingers crossed this is fixed in the next OTA happening shortly. In the change log we have this:
5194a3d power: charger: need sometime to handle the usb disconnecting events
Fixes listed here
A computer going to sleep would cause the data part of the USB connection to disconnect, if this event is now handled correctly by the charging system perhaps it will continue to charge normally after the computer has slept. Like I say, fingers crossed but looks hopeful.
Regards
Phil
A work around that most of you probably know is that as soon as your computer has been put to sleep, unplug the cable and replug it again. The phone will start charging again.

Here's an interesting discovery - would be interested to know if anyone else has the same issue.
Basically, my old WM6.5 phone (Touch Pro) used to take charge from a powered USB socket, even when the computer was turned off.
Plugging the HD7 into the same USB socket, and the phone won't charge. That's fine, I can understand there may be valid reasons for it.
What's *really* interesting is that if I leave the phone plugged into this powered down PC overnight, the battery is pretty much dead in the morning. Compare this to leaving the phone unplugged completely, and I'd generally see 15% battery usage overnight.
The solution is pretty simple - don't leave the phone plugged into this USB socket, but it seems odd.
Any chance someone else can try this?
Is the Zune client on your pc open because my phone will not charge with zune open
but once i exit out of zune on the pc it charges fine...
ive lost my charger and too lazy and cheap to buy a new one so im just using the pc to do it....
no - the PC is actually powered down. However, with soft power switches, the USB port stilll can get power, as proven by my ability to charge my Touch Pro from USB when the PC's off.
I'm not sure what could be causing this, but i will try to see if mine is the same too, then i will post feedback
I've charged mine on a USB port at work, but there isn't any Zune software in the way there... Honestly, I don't sync through USB, so I never noticed this, but at work I have used the USB port on our camera system to charge my phone...
most likely cause is the fact that the computer reduces the amount of current send to the usb port when powered down.
normaly all that is needed is a move of the mouse or a key press to power the computer back on.
now both the keyboard and mouse are low power devices.
now my guess is that the touch pro needs less power in standby then the hd7, and therefore the first will charge and the second will drain.
so to solve this question you need to measure the power comming from the computer in standby (powered on it's 500mA), and both the phones in standby mode.

Here's what I find odd:
The phone will not charge unless powered on. For example, if I have the phone turned off, and plug it into the wall charger it came with, the phone boots up. It will NOT charge while turned off.
Anyone else notice this?

i saw someone mention that the led won't turn on during charging while the phone is turned off.
sadly he didn't wait long enough to see if the led turns on when the battery is fully charged.
also i have no idea which model he was using.

I posted earlier about charging issues on the HD7: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849548
What I found was that if you have the HD7 plugged into the USB port and then you suspend/shut down the PC, it'll stop charging (while all other phones I've used - iPhones, HD2, etc. - will keep charging).
Once you suspend/shut down, you need to then unplug and replug the HD7, and it should start charging again. Not sure why this happens, but I need to do it every night, otherwise I have a dead phone in the morning.

That is apparently a "feature" of WP7-- the phone will automatically turn on when plugged in.
Hi,
I have a new and flawless Note, the USB connector is OK.
At night I connect the Note to the charger and I put some music on to fall asleep. Playback is configured to just play one album once.
Normally I put the phone in Flight Mode, in order to sleep without unnecessary radiation next to me.
On some few occations (it happend to me for like 5 times now), in the morning, the phone is not charged at all! But I am 100% sure that the battery status icon on the top bar signaled the charging mode.
This morning it happend again and I noticed that I left the Flight Mode off (because my wife is away and I want to stay in contact if needed).
Also, I noticed that I have been using a ZTE charger specked with 750mA, while the original Samsung Galaxy Note charger is rated 1000mA.
Can it be, that I was using the ZTE charger on its limit and that having apps running, or maintaining flight mode off, was enough to actually not being able to deliver that extra juice to charge the battery?
The other reason could perhaps be a software problem, like some app draining the battery as much as the charger is able to charge, so in the end the battery stays more or less the same.
I am positive that the USB port is not broken. I.E. I tested by unplugging and plugging the charger from the wall socket instead from the phone and all is recognized OK. Also, no issues when connecting to the PC.
What is odd: on previous occations I think I remember that I just plugged the phone back and it charged.
I swapped the chargers, but still I have this odd impression, fearing that the device might have an issue.
Anyone had similar problems?
Cheers,
vma
Yes, looks like a weak USB charge problem. You get similar behaviour if you try to charge the device from a PC - sometimes I have mine plugged in to my PC at work all day and it barely charges. Get home, put the official charger from Samsung in from a walk socket and it charges in an hour or two max.

is it just my unit or anyone else have this issue? the battery indicator (lock screen and notification bar) shows 99% and just wont go up anymore.
UPDATE 2: Trick - when the phone stop at 99% while charging after a while, unplug the cable and immediately plug the cable back in. The battery indicator now should show "Charged".
UPDATE 1: Seem to be a safety mechanism to protect the battery from overcharged.
Also notice the following issues:
2) battery indicator may show as still charging when cable is already unplugged (only happened 2 times so far)
3) screen on by itself randomly while charging (not always but do happen some times)
4) battery discharging mechanism (to protect from over charge) may go haywire! It may go down from full/ 99% to 90% or less while still charging (may be related to (1) ).
Check your cable while charging. Also check to see if its charging as AC not USB. When it switches to USB, then screen will turn on.

Can't speak for the other 2 issues, but only charging to 99% isn't really a bug. This used to occur on the Galaxy Nexus. More reading here
Battery Charges Only to 99%
You can just ignore it, as it's apparently a way to safeguard the battery. Not sure the exact percentage point at which your battery stats reset, but it will have already occurred at 99%, for sure.

I was charging with AC, and I used a cable which is for charging only (can't transfer data). I tried it again today with the original cable from the Nexus 4 box, and have not noticed the screen turn on by itself again... Suppose it is the cable fault.
As for the stuck charging icon, it happened twice since I got the phone, but have not appeared again. Can't pinpoint the issue.

Ah... this is my first Nexus device. Surprised to find that it is actually a safeguard feature :silly: well as long as it is not faulty I guess I just have to get used to it. Thanks for sharing.
It has to be the dumb usb adaptor that comes with the phone. Mines charges perfectly fine to 100% using an LG AC wall charger I bought.. And even if I restart the phone it stays as charged at 100, USB would be at 99% when I rebooted..

yea my screen turns on randomly sometimes.
also, try this , when u plug in your charger to the wall but dont plug it into the phone , listen to it itll sound like its gonna explode.
HI all,
C6903 would previously charge using an official Sony dock cord. Yesterday, however, the phone started making the 'phone flat' beepjng noise (it was close to flat), so plugged into the dock to charge. The beeping continued every few seconds, the screen rotation started playing up (I do have a screen rotation lock that hasn't been a problem) and the phone won't fully charge (the charge symbol is there, just keeps dropping. The error message "the connected power source is not sufficient. The battery is draining faster than it is charging. Minimise device usage while charging" popped up. It does charge VERY slowly if the phone is off airplane mode and the screen is off (it charged approx 30% in 10 hours, this way).
No rogue apps, etc. I reset to factory settings and the problem is still there. Phone charges fine using standard micro-usb.
Here in the NL, the carrier (KPN) send your phone away for minimum 2 weeks (& will not give you a replacement), and they will likely just test with the standard USB charger, which is fine.
Anyone experienced this & any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Adam
sounds like the cable is faulty, probably only one way to find out if you know someone with a dock - or just send the dock back to were you purchased it declaring it faulty
I've had similar issues, I solved it by rebooting the phone and plugging it in using sony usb charger until the charge is over 30%, after I got mine to 30% using usb, it then was able to charge using the dock.
you could check the dock with a multimeter, but there's not really much to the dock itself, so unless it's a broken wire, the problem is with the wall charger which the docks plugged into or the phone
Thanks all. I will check if it is the dock/cable or the power plug when my wife gets home - she also has the Z1.
Thanks again, will keep updated.
Adam
Yeah, sadly the cables don't last too long - went through 2 cables up until now and many more to come.
I updated my phone through OTA, but once i rebooted it aftet installing update, my USB port started to act strange. The phone takes 6 hours to fully charged ( with the same original power brick and cable) and also the cannot be recognized by any computer. OTG flash drives don't work anymore too.
Anyone else experienced these symptoms?

Bad wire...
You've lost a couple of pins... So you're not getting the turbo charger handshake... Further confirmed by loss of data to your PC...
Get a new wire... Make sure it specifies DATA/SYNC...
Unless you've burned up your turbo charger... Which I have heard of yet... Though I've broken the board in a couple of QC 2.0 compatible wall warts... But they just stop charging all together

Hey, I have the same problem but I bought and changed the cable USB so I solved the "problem".
This is weird but seriously I noticed this problem, Really I don't know.
Nexus 6 USB/charging port are this phones Achilles heel
I have recently resurrected my nexus 6 and found that it no longer gives me the turbo charger notification.
Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk
Fast charging notifications are ROM dependant. AFAIK, still not part of the stock ROM.
A way to tell what's happening is to use Ampere and look for ~ 1900 - 2200mA of current on the quick charger. ~ 500mA on a regular wall charger and <200mA on usb (computer) port.
The phone will only fast charge below a preset level. Somewhere around 80% the fast charge starts to slow down and that is reflected in the current measurement. By 85%, my N6 drops to ~1600mA.
If you go to settings -> battery while plugged into a wall (AC) charger and it shows usb charging, then check the cable and charger. Try different ones. If still it shows usb charging, then your phone charging port is messed up. I'd first try cleaning it.
If you can't remember the last time you cleared the caches (clean flashed) a factory reset might get things cleaned up as well.
If you're still using the original battery at this point in time, slow charging might just be a result of an old, expended battery.
