I've had my Nexus 4 for less than a week and there are a bunch of little scratches on the screen and one small crack near the bottom. I've had a bunch of touchscreen phones in the past and I've never gotten s single scratch on the screen so wtf is going on? Oh and is there anyway to fix them or at least make em less noticeable?

A screen guard, such as XO skins will cover them up.

wurd ^^^
In my opinion (which seems to differ greatly from many others on this board) I want to show off the beautiful glass back. What is the point of keeping it scratch free and uncracked if you are just going to keep it hidden in a case for nobody to see, anyway? This phone cost $350, I highly doubt there is going to be a huge resale value for it when it comes time for me to replace it with the Nexus 5 (or whatever they call it). I will use screen protectors for the front and back and call it a day. I figure I will buy a nice black TPU case after I break the back (if I ever break it, that is) to hide the cracks, but until then, leave it naked for the world to see.

After being accustomed to having my plastic Nexus S naked the whole time (and it taking a few big falls without a mark) I was so uneasy handing the N4 at first - it felt so fragile and hard to hold. Fortunately I received the bumper the next day, and this has made a world of difference. I no longer feel on edge every time I pick it up - I still think my naked Nexus S is more durable, but at least the bumper let's you still enjoy the N4's superior build.

@OP,
You're holding it wrong.
Like someone else said, I suggest a screen protector with a silicon backing. They are the best.
Silicon backed protectors leave no residue and the silicon will fill in scratches and make them invisible while the protector is on. Protectors that stick using static cling will not cover scratches, and other protectors that require water to apply are more trouble than they are worth, in my opinion.
I recommend these, when it comes back in stock that is:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AEU4OEE/ref=oh_details_o04_s00_i00
I have used their protectors on many different phones and I am always extremely pleased with the results. Unlike most non-body armor screen protectors, these come with protectors for both the front and back.
I'm not a case person. I tend to take care of my phones. I'd recommend front and back protectors, the Nexus 4 bumper, just cause it adds a little more protection and grip, without taking away from the looks of the phone, and just be as careful as you possibly can. I don't care what phone you are talking about. If you drop it right (or wrong rather) it will break.
Good luck.
Yes screen protector is a no brainer, glass can scratch even gorilla glass, not too bothered though although I have a case on order for it as my phone gets slung in a pack with a big bunch of keys and other stuff, it would look like a pile of pants in no time if I had no case.
Front and back glass looks like sex but is a little vulnerable

I've had my Nexus One for about a year. I have a couple scratches on my screen even with Gorilla Glass. The scratches are definitely from keys. I also have a few nicks on the body. I went a month with a pouch/case and screen protector but after about a month I realized how you totally lose the design of a phone with cases'. So I think when I get my Nexus S, Im gonna use a pouch and just rock my phone fully NAKED, who cares if you scratch the screen or the body, Its just a phone. In about a year when your going to sell it, its already dated and worth little to nothing, How much is a 6/10 condition Nexus One Vs a 9/10 Nexus One?
im looking for a pouch too. i love the way the stock phone feels on my hand.

Because there are small spots on my screen where the coating is gone (or seems that way anyways). There are others who have experienced this also in the big "oleophobic coating" topic. It can only be seen under light in a certain angle, but it's definitely there. The screen protector negates the effect so I don't see it anymore. Weird, but that's why I use a screen protector.

No screen protector since day 1 in december, no scratches either despite some bad drops on concrete which have dented the plastic around the screen.
Glass is tough!
I think building up a castle around a phone is "iPhone user style"
I must say, unlike the protective film found on previous phones I have purchased, the back and front protective film on the N4 were applied flawlessly. Obviously the front film had to go due to the power and volume button labels (without the labels I probably would have left it on as well). However, the back one is applied so perfectly that I have been hesitant to remove it. I like the idea of keeping it applied to the phone to prevent scratches while laying the phone down. To me this seems to be a great alternative to paying money for an aftermarket skin or an obnoxious case.
Anyone else doing the same?

I've been pulling mine in and out of my pocket countless times since I received the phone and have had absolutely no issues with it catching anything.
just got XOSkins one the back and front, get it while its not scratch or weep when sand gets to your phone first
I was planning to keep it on, but then just one day it all peeled off without warning.
This is something I have always been in the habit of doing despite having screen protectors in hand. After dropping my phone 2 ft and the screen spidering (yr later w/ screen protector), I have begun to live and die by otterbox cases despite their size. I did drop countless times over a year period without breaking the screen but the wear was there in other ways. The cases are not water proof / or extremely resistant by any means but their isn't a scratch on my device since. Just needs a thorough cleaning on interval. Not too expensive either, about $25 online. Best thing I have done for my phone since claiming through insurance. After further review, despite the films, my front and rear bezels are very worn in the areas where the films didn't cover. No shock resistance offered by the flimsy films as the phone is likely to eventually take a spill to the ground or two. Good luck

I pulled that crap off within 30 seconds of unboxing, nothing gets between me and my nexus.
I left the back one on too. I use Diztronic's TPU case so I see no reason to pull it off since it will prevent scratches when something gets inside the case.

Mine started bubbling so I had to take it off. I still didn't take off the front one though, lol! I don't mind the power and volume indicators getting in the way in exchange for a flawless screen.

That's the same thing I did. Just got my Diztronic case in today and cleaned any prints off the protective film and put on the case. All those that said they took off the protective film will be on here posting sob stories like many others are currently doing. I might add I take care of my stuff. I just now switched from my Vibrant that I've owned since launch and at still looks and works awesome (only because its running Paranoid). Only had a SGP case on it and never a screen protector and it only has a very tiny scratch that you can't even see unless you angle the phone just right and have enough light hitting it.
Still have my front and back ones on. I got a bestskinever but haven't gotten around to applying it yet. For now the factory ones are fine, and it's fun to watch people try to tap the little power icon on the protector and then get frustrated when the screen doesn't turn on

the phone attracts a lot less finger prints without the plastic on it. I had left both on initially but got tired of the finger prints. once I took them off I was surprised how finger print resistant it is, way better then my galaxy nexus. the back was also less "slippery" without it.
My ocd took it off seconds after unboxing.
Hey guys!
I'm just curious as how people are considering using their cases.
There was a poll like this on Nexus 10 and naked won hands down. But seeing as this is a phone, I thought maybe it'd be different.
Maybe post as to why you use your phone naked, or otherwise?
Anyways, happy voting!
Personally, I use it naked because it just feels better that way. I also never drop things, so I'm not worried about any damage.
I use mines with a screen protector and the spigen case but I'm still after a couple weeks I'll take it off and use it without a case.

Going for the Ringke SLIM case for the most minimal protection since I'm okay with phones and take care of them. Provides enough protection for the camera.
Hopefully arriving this week?
Protected! Are you crazy? My N5 came out of the box and went straight into a spigen neo hybrid and a screen protector was placed on top. I'm too clumsy to go naked, I've already knocked the thing off my night stand while reaching for something else.
Well I can't throw it at a wall with just the ringke slim case and screen protector but some protection is better than none, I just wish places would make a true full body protection film for it, kind of like the skinomi I have on my n4 (it covers front, back and sides) so far I'd only seen ones that cover front and back not the sides.

Protected. Every now again, I'll want to take off the case and go naked it.
But that's when it happens to slide off a table from someone bumping into it and the screen cracks. Lookin' at you, Galaxy SIII....
Naked, considering there's no official case out yet. It seems third-party cases never fit as well for feel as comfortable as those made by the manufacturer. Even when the official cases do come out, I'll probably skip it. With the soft plastic, the N5 feels less fragile than the typical phone and I'm really careful with it anyway.
With the screen protectors on (not a full on case), does the quality of the screen go down?
Anyone else have faint small scratches on the Nexus 5.. The glass panel is from corning which should be 20-30% stronger than the previous gorilla glass 2. However what i'm seeing here is backwards... my galaxy s3 is pretty old now and actually dropped it face down a couple times maybe 2 feet? nexus 5 has not experienced a drop at all.
Heres the shocker
My s3 which has been used for almost 2 years has no scratches at all..
my nexus 5 however has 2 faint scratches on the right side, now im a very clean guy and i take care of my phones and i clear out my pockets everytime i put my phone in.
Gorilla glass has a hardness scale of 8-9 anything above it will scratch it doesn't matter how pointy or sharp it is.
However in my case the glass had some imperfections where the scale wasn't 8-9.
so this thread is about if you have faint scratches and if you have another device with Gorilla glass 3 and or 2 please compare them it would be interesting to see results. :good:
If your device is perfect please step outside in the sunlight and angle your phone in different ways you will find some..
Gorilla glass is scratch resistant not scratch proof...and something pointy or a sharp knife wont put a scratch on the screen but even minute particle of sand i.e. silica will scratch the screen as silica is the hardest thing on earth and even gorilla glass can't resist it!!

All glass can scratch. There's probably many millions of people who have scratches on their GG2 and GG3 now, most not knowing the exact event which caused it.
Everyone knows that screen protectors prevent scratches on the glass. Everyone knows cases help prevent drop damages. If you don't use one, and get damage, you only have yourself to blame. If you don't use one, and get no damage, that's fortunate, but it doesn't mean that you'll be fortunate the next time.
The N5 has some of the most micro-scratch prone glass of any phone I've ever owned. My Moto X comes with me to work on construction sites, gets tossed in my tool bag with all my sharp tools, and just generally gets beat up, and there are maybe one or two micro-scratches on it, and you have to look hard to find them. My N5 on the other hand, which I've had for a much shorter amount of time, gets babied and never sees any type of hazard, is just covered in them. I have been taking ridiculously good care of it, but it seems like a new micro-scratch pops up daily. I don't really care because you can only see them when the screen is off, but it's still pretty ridiculous.

my n5 is scratch free. no screen protection, no case, nothing. it gets tossed around, dropped, but always gets put into a pocket when carrying around. id say its handled whatever abuse ive thrown at it fairly well.
After a month I got a scratch on my phone, and I treat it like a baby :crying: , the nexus 4 lasted about 5 months without a scratch in comparison , I got a SGp nano tr glass to protect it , almost 40 euros ouch!

I bought my Nexus in march I thought i would love it. I tried it for two weeks and I hated it. I hated the build quality the way android works, it changed a lot since my eve days. So i gave it to my brother and took back my Z10. Eventually i got it back. like 4 weeks ago. And i gave back the Z10 then my friend wanted to buy a SGS5 so I told him to try out the nexus for two weeks see how he likes android now. He had the SGS2 and went iPhone. He returned it two weeks ago and cumulatively I've only ever had my nexus for four weeks. Ive started liking it.
I never bought it a case nor a screen protector. I thought i was going to sell it. Heck i couldn't return it because of some bulshevic that T-Mobile did.
My Nexus has been naked since March. It has been through three people and this is what it looks like.

Ebay has this Sandstone Case for the nexus 5. (There's a thread about it somewhere) It's very slim and most likely will not protect it if you drop it but it is very very thin and mimimalistic if you still have a case for your phone.
I currently have a black and white version of those cases. And running a matte screen protector. I might end up changing the matte to a regular protector. I'm too afraid to run it with no screen protector due to the ability to scratch it. I had a HTC One S before and saw a tiny scratch and it bothered me the whole time I had it.
I've had mine since December and not a single scratch on it. I did however use the phone with a case half the time with a glass screen protector, the plastic ones just feel cheap and grippy on the fingers. Looking at the condition of the N5 next to my iPhone 5 and S4 makes me appreciate it even more.

What's the point of a case if it's not going to protect your phone

I have this Cruzerlite case and it's really good. I dropped my Nexus several times (), but nothing happened!
Also I'm using a screen protector. :good:

Lol because you guys scratched up that phone so badly in such a short time.
There's already a thread for this:
