My kindle just rebooted and I noticed it go into an upgrade. Bummer thought I had disabled the software updates
Anyone know what's new? Lost root I see!
Bryan
Have you attempted to re-root yet, and what method were you using to prevent updates? I renamed the otacert.zip file. I hope that keeps me at 10.2.1.
Mine also was upgraded. Old method to root device doesn't work. Any idea how to root with new firmware?

It seems that with the latest OTA update root functionality has been lost. I see that there are copies of past ROM versions available for download. Perhaps someone has the technical know-how on how to downgrade to these versions?
U need to restore with system.img using factory cable ot any other way geting fast boot mode
You don't need to downgrade the 8.9" as that is still rootable with the new version. Just re-root.
But yea get a motorola factory usb cable from ebay and and then use onelia's recovery to flash back to the previous KF2 or KFHD7 version
Nope...

I'm going to have to agree with the initial poster on this thread and say that if your firmware is at 8.1.4, The Bin4ry root is NOT working. I've ran it several times even after a full factory erase / restore, and throughout the entire process all I keep seeing is "permission denied", etc., all indicating that it was unsuccessful. For example, in the terminal step where you type in the 2 commands.. BOTH said "file not found", telling me that the file was never allowed to enter the device in the first place.. in other words, blocked. YES, the process does indeed finish, but su access is certainly not there. I can side-load apks of course, etc... but any apps requiring root access do NOT work.
I have found a way to manually block OTA updates, so if someone can figure out a way to downgrade the firmware back a couple versions, I think we'll be in business.
Please don't take this post as any sort of insult to anyone's intelligence, but I'm just relaying my experiences with the Bin4ry root process. I hope we as a community can come up with a way around this so we can get some custom roms onto this beast soon. cheers.
The binary root still works as of 8.1.4. If you read the entire post for the root process, all the permission denied and file not founds are normal. The root takes advantage of the restore process. I rooted an hd 8.9 today running 8.1.4 with no problems. So unless you guys have the only two hd 8.9's that Amazon changed the software...
I can also confirm that it still works on 8.14.ive rooted about a dozen times now, don't ask you'll be bored. I've also downgraded to 8.13 without any trouble, or factory cable, and rooted afterward. That said, I did let it OTA after downgrading. Again, don't ask.
Peace

fuyoo,
There is no need to downgrade, Software version roots just fine, see:

If you get a file not found error:

I am trying to return my Kindle Fire HD7 to factory stock with OTA working. I have it running on 7.4.6 and I'm pretty sure I could copy the 7.4.8 update the the SD card root and click the "Update Your Kindle" button to get to 7.4.8 but I like to make sure that future OTA updates will work, so I purposely update only to 7.4.6 and then let OTA take it up to the current version. On this Kindle, something must be wrong because it will not "Sync" update to 7.4.8.
First, I ran KFHD_SRT_v1.3.5 and flashed the system to 7.3.0 (rooted)
Next, I ran Restore-Factory Recovery
Next, I ran Erase cache and user data
Next, I rebooted
at that point it was working on 7.3.0
Then, I copied the 7.4.6 update to the root of the SD card and hit the "Update Your Kindle" button
The Kindle is now indicating version 7.4.6 and running normally
Now after fully charging the battery, I tap on "Sync" (which starts the curved arrows spinning) and let the thing go to sleep. This usually results fairly quickly in an update to 7.4.8 but on this Kindle every time I check (several days now) it is still sitting on 7.4.6. I have also tried Factory Reset a few times but it did not help.
I would have thought that after running the factory 7.4.6 update there should not be anything different that would prevent the OTA update from working. Am I missing something? Has anyone else had this problem? I have spent quite a bit of time searching the forum and have not found a similar problem.
Just update it with the zip the way you didn't want to, its going to completely wipe the changes made to the system in the process thus unblocking ota's in the future.

I accidentaly upgraded my fire from 5.1.1 to 5.1.2.1
The device was previously rooted.
Is there any way that I can downgrade?
Google services still works fine.
Kingroot is broken.

You need to reload 5.1.2 (can not go back to 5.1.1). See third post in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/general/index-amazon-fire-2015-t3210485/page11
I had the same thing happen to me recently. You will just need to do a restore firmware using 5.1.2. You can find the firmware here: http://rootjunkysdl.com/files/?dir=Amazon Fire 5th gen/Firmware Use the file dated 3/17/16. This video is helpful (although my drivers did not install automatically for me, I installed them manually though the supertool makes it easier) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQLoH-ahjy4
Sorry to thread jack but my kindle replacement just came in. It self updated during its stupid backup process. Can I go back to 5.1.1? I am going to guess that it came with that OS.

No, 5.1.1 = Brick.
Sideload 5.1.2 from the replies in this thread.

Yea I wound up just doing a 5.1.2 sideload and it fixed kingroot and all for me. Is there anything wrong with 5.1.2? Seems like 5.1.1 and up lose access to twrp so I guess thats the only difference.
Hi, I need help. Recently bought my Amazon Fire 5 gen. I'm trying to remove the Fire OS and install the CM 11. However, by inattention, I downgrade from version 5.1.2.1 to version 5.1.1. Now my Fire is no longer booting. Is there a solution?
Thanks.

Nope. Contact Amazon (or the place you bought it) for a courtesy exchange.
History, bought a Kindle fire 5th gen last year and accidentally had it update to 5.3.1.0 back before there was a root. I shelfed it for months, picked it back up today downloaded RootJunkys "AmazonFire5thGenSuperTool". got kingroot installed.
Kingroot needed internet so i enabled internet and didnt notice the Kindle updated to 5.3.2.
I figured out how to downgrade back to 5.3.1.0 successfully.
Now im starting over again with rootjunkys "AmazonFire5thGenSuperTool"
Im doing kingroot again and its asking for internet... within the 30 seconds I enabled it, I noticed a update is already half downloaded, So i killed the wifi to pause it....
How am I supposed to use Kingroot? if my kindle is about to update??
What are my options here?
How do I kill this update?
thanks.... sorry for my noobness. ive been searching all over the forums but figured I had to ask at this point.
Edit:Fixed.... the update will just download and not load.
It will only load if i click update or let the kindle fire sit idle for a while unused.
I also got kingroot to work on the 21st time......

Be sure to erase that update file if completely downloaded! Partial (incomplete) OTA downloads are erased on reboot; completed downloads are installed. Also block OTA updates via SuperTool.

Root of sdcard folder or "internal storage" when viewed from tethered host. Typically a large (huge) file with .bin extension.
I connected with adb and cleared data with pm tool for ota package while kingroot was doing its job. It is imperative not to let kindle fire update as some of the updates are not reversible. The best version of software is the one that fire came with, especially if that is the one that allows to boot custom recovery.

Any chance you could give me just a bit more details about how to find and delete the pending update? Thanks
Edit: Nevermind. Apparently the update won't install while it reboots trying to gain root.

Partially downloaded OTA updates are deleted when the device reboots; only fully downloaded files are at risk of being processed.

Thanks. Last question hopefully, are updates incremental? I have another fire on 5.1.3 and I'd rather just let it update to a rootable version than try to downgrade.
Sent from my VS985 4G
5.1.3 is rootable see post here https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=70883993&postcount=306
Updates will take you to the latest fire OS so if you left your tablet exposed to updates you will go to 5.3.2.1 which is unrootable.
There are incremental updates that take you from for example 5.3.2 to 5.3.2.1. They are stored in the tablets cache as apposed to the SD card. They are typically much smaller than the full OS .
I've captured an update from 5.3.1.0 to 5.3.2 it was about 90mb .
I have a kindle fire that used to belong to my brother and he had it rooted. I did a factory reset and upon registering the kindle it throws me into a language selection loop. I can still manage to get into apps, settings, etc.. if I click fast enough before the language selection pops up again. I'm assuming this is happening because it is rooted and I deleted files that were needed with the factory reset. I believe it's a 3rd gen kindle but I don't know how to be sure. Current version is 13.3.2.3.2_user_323001720 Build date Sunday, June 1, 2014. I prefer it to be unrooted for a fresh start but if it's easier to get past that error loop I'll take it. Can anyone help me with this please?

Sounds like you may have a 3rd gen HDX. You'll need to identify the exact model as recovery procedures differ among the various fire devices.
Bumping this to see if I can get any help on it. I have decided to try again after finding my tablet. The tablet is a Kindle Fire HDX 7 3rd gen. After researching for a while I found out my brother rooted it using SuperSU as there's an su file under system/xbin (my brother doesn't remember anything) but no SuperSU app installed due to the factory reset. I was able to solve the language selection loop error but now I'm stuck on what to do next. Some apps work some don't. I just want to be able to use newer apps/games. Would you guys recommend trying to unroot or can I update current root to something not stuck in a 2014 update?

I would suggest go to amazon and download the full update. Also there is a hdx thread that might be more relevant. I do not have one of these devices and this thread is for the fire 7. See the next post...
Thanks @DB126

Reloading FireOS (any build) is not an option on unrooted HDX device. Also rather dangerous without an understanding of compatible versions; a difficult to correct brick can easily result. Re-ask your question in the HDX help thread; someone (most likely me) will respond. You'll need to do a fair bit of work to restore that device including unlocking the bootloader and installing a custom ROM. Not for the faint of heart.
Thank you guys!
