All,
I flashed Phoenix Rising 4.5...love it. The issue I'm having is with my data connection. I just bought a house, YAY, and we were there with some friends last night moving some stuff and just enjoying the clean, empty space. I looked at my phone and realized I had no data connection. Phoenix shows data as HSDPA, so the little H wasn't on the notification bar. My friend was next to me with her iPhone, cringe, and she had some 3G but was bouncing back and forth to Edge. I had nothing.
Is this a problem with the modem, a setting I can adjust? Something? Once I had my wireless network setup it won't be so bad but I'd hope I would have some data. Any help would be appreciated. Also, if I need to flash another modem, any suggestions? I haven't flashed a modem by itself before, hopefully it will be easy.
Thanks.
What modem are you on? I would suggest trying a new one. The captivate, imo, didn't get very strong connections. My other non smart phone had better signal strength overall. On the other hand, my captivate had better signal at my house than some of my friends' phones.
Samsung Captivate
Firefly 2.0.5
SpeedMod K12U
JK4 Modem
I'm on the JK4 modem that come with Phoenix Rising 4.5. Normally my signal is very strong and I had full bars at my house, just no data connection. Does the I9000 JK4 modem not support Edge, I don't even know if Edge is an international connection type.

I'm in colorado. When you mean APNs, you talking about apps that shut off data? I haven't seen any in my searches. I wasn't sure if there was some data setting I could modify with SGS tools.

Should see something like AT&T 310 410, click this. Setting I see are, yours may be a bit different:

Alright, that helped clear things up a bit. Use packet data is enabled, Data Roaming is not. I didn't know roaming still existed. What exactly counts as roaming?
My APN reads as such:
Name: ATT WAP
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
Port: 80
User name: Not Set
Password: Not Set

MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com

Anything look out of place here? Could this solely be a modem issue that doesn't support edge?
So, I was back out at the house today. I was on HSPDA and Edge so I guess I'm good. Must have been a weird instance. Thanks for all your help.
Close thread!
Just got my Note straight from the UK, unlocked. Been on the phone with ATT about 6 times. I can send and recieve calls, texts - but no DATA. They can't seem to figure out why it will not pick up the ATT Data Network. Sim, EIN all linked, but no joy.
I am a noob, sorry - any ideas. I hate to send the phone back.
Any ideas ?
Update - Funk2641's response below (no APN was entered) - fixed it the issue.
Still, ATT would not give me a 4G smartphone plan - even though the H+ shows up next to the clock ? Initial Speedtests look like the same as my Infuse, Atrix and 4S.
Thanks everybody (Funk2641) for your help ! I hope this thread saves some agony for many as this phone is hitting the states. Don't know if I will tread in Eurospec for the Nexus, as I will want to hold that one in my hand first.
Also, this is a great phone - speed, battery life and the screen is fantastic !

I will follow this thread since I will also switch from T-mobile to AT&T.
I too have the same issues. I actually used a few different apns and got edge to work poorly, I sighed and told myself ICS would fix it all up better and to just enjoy the extra battery life of 2g now, God I hope a get this cleared up

Technically, the Note is just a big SGS2. There's no reason on the phone side you should be having a problem using the Cingular APN. I'm using a ISGS2 and a UK 3G Tab 10.1 on AT&T with no problem. It's either something with the provisioning of your account or your Note may not have the right bands (Asian?). The latter is unlikely if you ordered it from the UK. Try reseting the APN to default under network settings. Also, if you're on a legit 4G plan there's a specific APN that you can find on the ASGS2 forum.
Here is another APN that works, I had the same issue
For APN settings use the name ATT and then for APN the word phone. Leave everything else blank-what is needed will get filled in automatically. Click the APN when you finish adding it and the radio button turns green to indicate it is working. The advantage to this APN setting is it gives you clear access and data speeds are not limited by ATT.
Those apns didn't work and I too a would doubt my phone bring the Asian version,.this version of gingerbread has the option to suspend my data network from holding down the power button maybe the software isn't...... I don't know I have no clue but my apns are normal but when's search they don't come up
In the list automatically so something a wrong
and I came from a hspa+ phone so my plan is already to go, I called to double check
to op, glad you got it straightened out...who did you order from and how much?

What plans are you guys, please?
(Anyone on month to month $50 unlimited?
There are two different APNs to use depending on what data plan you're on. If you're using a MediaNet or Data for non-Smartphones plan (3G) you need to use the Cingular APN. If you're on a legit 4G plan you need to use the special APN for 4G phones. If you reverse it, you'll get no data. For those of you on the 4G plan, go in to the APN settings. When you press menu, there's a reset to default option. It should pull the 4G settings down automatically. If you're on a 3G plan don't do this and instead manually enter the below settings. If you do this correctly you should get data. If you have a quad-band phone and still can't get data it's something with your account settings and not the h/w.

I'd like to know as well. Also when I upgraded to the Galaxy S2 no one told me I needed a "4G data plan". The rep said there wasn't such a thing and kept me on my regular data plan. Unlimited at $30 month. So I'm not even sure there is a 4G plan. I don't see one on the site either. I think people don't know what they're talking about. These are the settings I have on my note now:
Name: AT&T WAP
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
Port: 80
Username <not set> - Leave this alone
Password: <not set> - Leave this alone
Server: <not set> - Leave this alone
MMSC: http:/mmsc.cingular.com
MMS proxy: wireless.cingular.com
MMS port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Authentication type: <not set> - Leave this alone
APN type: internet + mms
I've got an unlimited grandfathered data plan and have been using this APN,
Name: ATT US HSDPA
APN phone
MCC 310
MNC 410
APN type: Internet+MMS
Everything else blank.
I have not received an update yet and probably won't install it until this is all straightened out. I was told originally by AT&T I could use any unlocked phone. There's no doubt that the Note of phone and not a tablet. They just don't want do anything for their customers that would cause them to update their database. Kind of ridiculous, maybe they don't care if they lose houses customers even though we pay them a lot of money every month. I hope all of this is straightened out soon before people start changing to new providers.

I have a GT-N7000. I have a metered 4g Smartphone plan.
I have tried the above. Get a connection error. I also have tried a different APN type, Internet only. Ditto. The wap.cingular APN does work. (I did power off and on after changing the APN just in case that might be necessary).
Is there anything else I should be doing for the so-called 4g APN to work? (I realize the Note is HSPA+ which really is not 4g even though AT&T calls it that).
I use
apn: pta
MMSC: http://mmsc.mobile.att.net

MMS Port: 80
mcc:310
mnc:410
apn type: internet+ mms
everything else blank. These are the settings from my skyrocket. I consistently get higher speeds than using the phone apn. Tested it just now and i got 6Mbps down and 1Mbs up on pta and half that on the phone apn.

Name is just pta
I went in to change my APN settings on my Note, and there were none!
I added several suggested and none will save.
Any ideas?
For the Phone and ptu settings you need an imei # the system recognize as 4G+...otherwise need the Wap settings.
To make settings stick u do know you need to click save from menu right?
the pta apn is for the LTE phones. if at&t will put an ime for an L TE phone into your account then that apn is the one you could use otherwise i dont think it will work.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
Yep pta is for LTE imei's. I don't thnk its any faster than the 'phone' apn tho
with either of the two, I get no data (ie, using "phone" for the apn name). I've got the 2gb tiered data plan, and it won't work. Not sure which account to utilize.
You'd have to use wap.cingular as apn.
Wireless.cingular.com as proxy
Mission accomplished!
OK, I can use the phone APN now. Wrote about it on my blog. Bottom line, talk to tech support. They need to enter an IMEI number from another device (I used the Infuse) to provision you on the right SOC. While I've heard the one for unlimited is HSDPPB, since I'm not grandfathered on unlimited, but am just a poor metered slob, my SOC is HSSMT7. Remains to be seen if more speed. I'll try tomorrow from work. From where I live in the hills, while the view is great, data speed sux regardless of APN.
I've seen some AT&T customers complain about terrible speeds and latency when doing speed tests. I too had this issue. Before the fix, I was getting about 20 kbps downstream and 400+ latency. After, I'm getting 6+ mbps and 80-120 latency. I fixed mine by adding a new APN with these settings. To change them, go to SETTINGS -> MORE... -> MOBILE NETWORKS -> ACCESS POINT NAMES. From here, either select the existing one or click the menu key to create a new one. Also, if you create a new one, make sure to select it after you're done making it. (you have to tap the radio to select it because tapping the name will edit it but NOT select it).
The blank ones are blank/unspecified. You probably only need to change APN and APN type (the other shown values were already like this on mine). For APN type, those are commas separating the terms. I posted a link to 3 shared screenshots so you can see what it should look like.

Thanks..I honestly didn't think there was a difference between the LTE and non-LTE plans at AT&T. But my dad is in charge of the plan, so maybe I am missing something.
I'm using the same Stock AT&T PTA apn I've used since the Infuse 4g and it works perfect. Stock APN I couldn't even get 20kbps most of the time. Now I can at least get 5.7 (about what I'm used to in my area).

I'm using the pta APN since I came from an LTE phone so my sim is provisioned for it. I usually got about 8-9mbps down in this location when on my sgs3 so if these speeds stick and improve I'm quite happy. Obviously uploads are the biggest hit but not too worried about that

It wouldn't work for me with the default WAP.Cingular APN. As soon as I changed it to the hspa+ one, speed test worked.
For this of you on the pta APN, does your MMS work? If so, do you still have the WAP.Cingular APN in the list (just not checked)? Or is the pta APN the only one listed?
I too have my Sim provisioned for lte, but if I use the pta APN, I get great data speeds, but no MMS. Thanks.

Yes, add this to the OP and everything will work.
I came across this topic on rootzwiki a while back and it's helped me a few times. Obviously it's for ATT only.

Hi everyone, I have an AT&T Moto X that hasn't been able to send or receive multimedia messages, and the data connection doesn't work. From what I've read, I believe it's an APN issue. However, I'm hesitant to mess with the settings because it's still on a basic phone plan, with no data. When I upgraded to the X, AT&T never automatically added a data plan. If possible, I really want to keep it this way, as I have no need for data, but would like to get MMS working.
In this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2238660) post #4 says to leave APN Type set to "phone" if you don't have an LTE plan. Is this a way to make MMS work, but not data? Is there a way to do this at all? And can that be done without AT&T recognizing the smartphone and adding a data plan? Any replies are appreciated :highfive:

You mean a data connection, not plan, right? It doesn't work over wifi. From what I've read, only Sprint allows downloading MMS over wifi, not AT&T.
I have the same problem, data just all of a sudden quit working and I had an LTE connection with no problems since I got the phone in November, same APN's as you on my phone and both always worked. I now get nothing no 2G, 3G, HSPA+ or LTE. SMS and calls still work but no MMS as expected since it requires a data connection. Spent 2 hours with AT&T both online and in store trying to see if it was anything on their end. Tried every APN they could find for the MotoX, about 4 or 5 different ones they came up with, even tried a new SIM card and still nothing. I did a factory reset last night in desperation and still no data so I finally RMA'd the phone with Motorolla tech support and the new (refurbished) one should arrive tomorrow. We'll see if that fixes it.
You had to send it back? Oh wow. Please post an update when you get your new phone or get it figured out. Thanks for the response!!

Not sure if this is the issue, but AT&T's own site says that the MMSC url should be: http://mmsc.cingular.com
You may give that a shot.
Additionally, from what I understand, MMS is ONLY transmitted through either EDGE, HSPA, HSPA+, or LTE
If you don't have data at all, I'm not sure if you can even send or receive MMS.
Good Luck
Time for a very late update, in case anyone else has this issue. I did finally get my data working, using the 3G APN settings on this page: (first result when you google "att apn settings", I can't post links yet)
Now, I mentioned in my first post that I really only wanted mms, so what I did was make two new APNs - one a copy of my original, non-working APN, but with APN type changed to only "default", and I selected this one. The second APN is the settings from the link above, but with APN type changed to only "mms". So now when I have data turned on, only mms works, not any other mobile data. AT&T still hasn't recognized the smartphone on the account and thus hasn't forced me to add a data plan.
