I posted this thread because I couldn't find a similar one and I thought would be useful. I would keep adding on to this when I find new information.
Disclaimer: This list is NOT exhaustive and there might be other ways to unbrick your phone. Also, I cannot guarantee that these methods would work for you.
With android around for so long, there are many developers out there who are constantly trying to get "more" out of their devices. However, one constant problem about tweaking our devices is that we have a chance of "Bricking" it.
So the most common question is:
What do I do when I brick my phone?
Before we start, let me explain what is a brick, and when would a brick happen.
What is a brick?
Altering the operating system of your phone in a way that causes the mobile device to become unusable results in a bricked, or inoperable phone. Bricking of phone can be done by a Hacker and via one or more update.

5. Phone turns on, and shows download mode
6. There are other instances, but the general idea is: If your phone doesn't boot to the home screen, it's an error.
When will I encounter these errors with my phone?
You might encounter errors with your phone when you:
- Root
- Flash any rom without proper wipe
- Flash incompatible kernels
- Interrupt a flashing process
- the list goes on and on...
So now we come to the important part, how do I get my phone to boot up?
There are different solutions to each problem, so please diagnose the problem first, then read on.
If your phone is stuck in a boot loop (stuck at boot screen):
1. Wipe Data and Cache
2. Wipe Dalvik Cache
3. Wipe Battery Stats
4. Reboot
**NOTE: If you didn't have CWM flashed, then just wipe data and cache via stock Samsung Recovery and try rebooting.
5. If the above doesn't work, flash a new rom.
If your phone can't get into recovery,
Try to go into download mode (holding Vol Down + Home + Power buttons).
Download mode looks like this:
If you could get into download mode, or you're already in download mode when you boot your phone, flash a stock rom through ODIN. The detailed guide can be found here:

A list of stock roms and downloads can be found here:

**Note: When you boot up your phone and it shows this screen, it's another form of download mode. All you have to do is to flash stock rom via ODIN, with the guide above this:
If you couldn't get into download mode or recovery mode, read on...
Let me warn you first, at this point, your phone is probably bricked.
So... What if my phone doesn't get into download/recovery mode?
1. Try doing a USB jig.
2. Try using RIFF JTAG.
USB Jig
To do this, you gotta have a device that looks like this:
You could buy one on eBay or Amazon, or simply go to the neighbourhood phone repair shop and borrow one. Or, you could lend one from someone near you, to find a list of people near you who have USB jig and are willing to lend, click here.
Alternatively, you could make a home-made one by following this guide:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKRrTZayRxU
**Note: The title states Galasy S II but it's proven to be working on our device too.
To do a USB jig, follow this guide:

RIFF JTAG
Go to this website and follow instuctions:
http://www.jtagbox.com/jtag-news/ri...-mini-gts5570i-unbrick-boot-repair-supported/
If all else fails, you can only send your phone to Samsung Repair, and remember: Play Dumb!
Don't mention anything about rooting, flashing, odin, etc. Don't say you dropped it in water either, your warranty doesn't cover accidental damage. Just tell them your phone suddenly became like that...
Special Cases:
Case #1
Your phone shows a black screen when you turn it on, but ODIN detects it. When you try flashing stock rom, it gets stuck at "setup connection...".
Solution: Your phone is bricked. Do a USB jig by following the method above. It might help you, but not 100%.
Case #2
Your phone shows a whitish screen, and ODIN detects it.
Solution: This is probably caused by a bad flash, or you flashed a rom that isn't intended for your phone. Just flash the correct stock rom via ODIN it would work (not for all cases).
If the above fails, you could reply to this post or PM me for help.

Yes they would be able to tell. Our devices have a bin counter that increases every time u flash a custom rom or something like that. However, some Service Centres wouldn't bother to check and then they would just change the motherboard for you.

Play dumb and tell them you don't know anything about whatever they are saying. Usually they won't check they'll just ask you if you dropped it in water (say no to that your warranty doesn't cover accidental damage). If they really ask, just say u don't know whats a bin counter and u've been using stock rom all along lol. That's what I did once and it worked.

Hi Thanks for the article. My phone is in strange mode. It can enter into download mode but when I try to boot or try to enter in recovery mode it keeps on flashing samsung logo and does not proceed. The samsung logo just comes and goes and it keeps on. There is currently no way to go to home screen or go to recovery mode. Samsung service center people said motherboard is gone. I think if motherboard would have gone my phone would never enter into download mode. Can you help me?
If your phone start in downloading mode and ODIN detects it flash a stock rom trought Odin and it should work. In the first post you will find the guide for flashing stocks rom.

Did your phone get stuck on bootscreen after installing stock-rom via odin? or after installing custom-rom via CWM recovery? or get stuck when you are installing stock-rom via odin (I mean you can't finish installing stock-rom via odin) ?
=================================================================
First Case =
If your phone get stuck on bootscreen after installing stock-rom via odin, please try to pull out your battery for about 15 minutes..
after 15 minutes, put your battery in and TURN ON your phone..
If it still get stuck on bootscreen, try to boot into recovery mode (by pressing power+home button)..
make FULL WIPE (wipe data/factory reset + wipe chace + wipe dalvik chace)..
then reboot system now..
If it still get stuck, you can try to flash it AGAIN via ODIN..
========================================
Second Case =
If your phone get stuck on bootscreen after installing custom-rom via CWM recovery, please try to pull out your battery for about 15 minutes..
after 15 minutes, put your battery in and TURN ON your phone..
If it still get stuck on bootscreen, try to boot into recovery mode (by pressing power+home button)..
make FULL WIPE (wipe data/factory reset + wipe chace + wipe dalvik chace)..
then reboot system now..
If it still get stuck, you can try to install your custom-rom AGAIN via CWM recovery..
boot into recovery and make FULL WIPE (wipe data/factory reset + wipe chace + wipe dalvik chace)..
choose zip from sd card (make sure that you put the custom-rom file zip in sd-card directory /sdcard/here),
install and wait until finish and then reboot system now..
If you still get stuck, try to install your custom-rom AGAIN via CWM recovery, but IN THIS TIME you must make full wipe twice, BEFORE and AFTER installing custom-rom and then reboot system now..
- reboot into CWM recovery
- make full wipe
- choose zip from sd card
- wait until installing finish/complete
- make full wipe again
- reboot system now
========================================
Third Case =
If your phone get stuck when you are installing stock-rom via odin (I mean you can't finish installing stock-rom via odin),
please make sure that :
- your computer did not installed Samsung Kies application, I think it may interfere your installing stock-rom process, so please un-install it first..
- you have installed the right or true Samsung USB driver..
- your micro-usb cable is support for your phone
- your battery phone in 90%
- if your firmware doesn't in one package, make sure that you choose the right file, I mean :
- BOOT = APBOOT_XXX
- PHONE = MODEM_XXX
- PDA = CODE_XXX
- CSC = GTS5570_CSC_XXX
-and don't take off your USB cable untill the installation is complete, "PASS"
I think that's all, it just based on my experience..
i realy need your help with gt-s5570

Sorry for the late reply I'd been busy lately. Can you explain your case in more detail as to whether your phone can boot up to recovery now?
Nice Guide, thanks :good:
Hi
Firstly, I'm sorry about my incorrect english.
I have a big problem with my rooted Galaxy Note Stock ICS 4.0.4.
After a phone restore (done in the Options menu) I encountered a boot problem.
When I turn the phone on, I see the white Galaxy Note GT-7000 writing and then
the Samsung Galaxy boot logo which continues flashing all the time but the
OS isn't booting. There isn't a boot loop which restarts the phone, only the blinking
Samsung animation.
I do really not know much about Android, rooting, flashing etc so I don't know what
is the problem and what I can do to fix it.
Recently I did a data/factory reset and cache partition wipe in the recovery mode,
hoping that this could help, but that didn't change anything.
After that I flashed another stock rom (ICS 4.0.4 Switzerland (Swisscom)) with
Odin in download mode, but there's still the endless boot problem.
I read about brick and that its not recommended to wipe anyting.
What could be my problem and how could I resolve it?
I'm sorry if theres just another thread which speaks about the same problem, but I
didn't find anyone with the identical situation as mine.
I'm very grateful for any answers.
hmm.. it could be because of data partition corruption..
download this http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?ukk00n20dahxxkp
place it on external SD.. boot into recovery and choose apply update from ext storage
once done. boot into recovery again.. now ... in the new CWM. do
factory reset., wipe cache partition
advanced menu> wipe dalvik cache
reboot
Hi,
thank you for your answer. But perhaps as I turned the phone on the first time
since yesterday (i didn't do anything since), I'm not anymore able to go into recovery mode
and the boot process ends just at the white Galaxy Note writing (without bootloop, there's
only the static text)
Only the download mode works fine, but obviously I cant install your file from there...
If you can get into download mode, better flash a stock ics rom first. After the flash is successful you can try to do the procedure as in my previous post.
I tried to flash different roms (also stock ones) but the download of the "factoryfs.img" doesn't finish.
The only thing I could do is to interrupt the downloading and restart from the beginning.
I read that this problem happens sometimes and that it could be resolved rebooting the phone and
the pc, but I didn't got it working
Do you know why it doesn't work? The first time I flashed successfully, but that was the first and the last time.
I don't even get an error or a fail notification...

If Odin stops at "factoryfs.img" you bricked your device.
(I wrote this and the following lines a few times now in the last days, but the different OP are consequently ignoring the message and try other intelligent approaches, in the end they will not succeed, because their Note is still bricked).
Solution: Samsung replaces your motherboard (that is the only real repair).
Workaround: eMMC scanner and repartition trick in hg42's threads.
Nothing else will help if your device is bricked.

You said something about loosing 3 GB repartitioning the memory. Its possible to revive the phone by this way?
Does anyone know approximately how much it will cost me to replace the motherboard of the Note?
download this PIT file http://d-h.st/FVh
now put the phone in download mode again, open odin and select the PIT file in the PIT tab. also make sure repartition is checked.
select the rom in PDA (if more that one file for rom, choose appropriate options)
connect the phone .. when the port is shows in odin flash again,,, check if this also stops at the same factoryfs

if you have warranty thats the first one to do. if not then there is a way by repartitioning the memory to skip the bad blocks, not a guaranteed method but works most of the time. cost of motherboard is high about 350-400$
One final try. If you are able to go recovery mode, pressing volume up, home, power buttons, flash abyss kernel 4.2, do all wipes and formats and flash a custom rom such as kingdroid.

now put the phone in download mode again, open odin and select the PIT file in the PIT tab. also make sure repartition is checked.
select the rom in PDA (if more that one file for rom, choose appropriate options)
connect the phone .. when the port is shows in odin flash again,,, check if this also stops at the same factoryfs

Thank you for your attempt helping me. Perhaps the flashing still fails (factoryfs.img could not be downloaded entirely).
Damn, 350-400$ only for the motherboard is a lot, considering that I bought this almost new phone for around 340$...
Isn't there any other way to get rid of the "brick"? I would accept any loss of memory just to get the phone working...
By the way is it a soft- or a hardbrick?

What you could try is get 2.3.6 ready in Odin, plug the phone into your computer via USB, insert the battery and go into download mode. Then as soon as you see the download icon in the phone, quickly click start in Odin.
This could keep the phone on as theoretically, a new firmware is being installed wiping the old firmware? Worth a shot?

If you do the download button combo, does the download icon show before reboot? It should still...
Use these firmwares and guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1102881 I would probably re-partition and use the 512 pit file too.

Hey guys,
I own a SGS+ and tried to flash a ROM a few month ago.
Not sure which one it was in particular but it was a 4.1.2 ROM.
Normally it worked pretty well but that time it broke my phone apparently.
So now a few month later I tried to get it to work again.
My phone stucks at the splashscreen, easy said.
It boots till the splash screen and then it's on for about 3-4 minutes I guess and then the screen turns off.
But apparently it still runs because if I try to start it again over the power button it doesn't work.
I have to remove the battery, insert it again and then I can use the power button.
I tried several things and I'm out of information here.
So maybe one of you guys can help me out here?
Thanks for reading!
Try wiping cache an dalvik cache and fix permissions. If that doesn't help do a full wipe and install a new rom. If it still doesn't work, flash a stock rom via odin. Also, which recovery are you using?
Sent from my GT-I9001 using xda app-developers app
Already did everything you mentioned, multiple times.
Well I used at first CWM 6.0.1.2 then switched to 6.0.2.8, then 6.0.3.2, then 6.0.3.6 and then TWRP 2.4.0.0 and TWRP 2.6.0.0.
I tried those who should be for the bricked phones.
Try to flash a new kernel, then flash a new ROM. You should be able to get into download mode...

That's not the problem.
I can get into download mode, I could get into download mode all the time.
I don't think you got my problem right:
My phone stucks at the splash screen.
Doesn't turn off only screen turns off but the phone is still running.
I can only reboot if I take the battery out.
So it boots up to the splashscreen and stucks.
I flashed a few new roms and nothing worked.
If you can get into download mode, try flahing a stock rom via odin.

Maybe you didn't flash appropriate ROM for your device. Read this thread, especially the first post by our forum mate xsensman and try to check if it could be concerning also your device:

Mate, something is strange there. With splashscreen you mean bootloop, right? So you see the logo, but the phone doesn't really loads the Android?
OK, here we go: please remove the battery and write down your serial No and google a bit is it really i9001? There are about 20 different types of SGS so just to make sure which model do you have.
That bootloop can happen for several reasons, but I would assume that in your case it happens either for:
bootloader isn't working properly
you haven't flashed the proper ROM for your device.
I suspect very strongly the bootloader, so re-flashing the bootloader via Odin, theoretically, should revive your phone. Just check (as written above) do you REALLY have i9001, (as otherwise -if not- you could brick it with the bootloader for i9001):
First post, "5. Follow the instruction" (all files there)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=32144697
I'm 100% sure that I have a real i9001, not a special edition or something like that.
And I flashed before it got broken a few month and the roms worked just fine.
Well but then it broke somehow.
I just see that my phone with the CWM-Recovery can't format /data and hangs.
Can't do anything unless I remove the battery and boot up again.
Could this be a hint for you guys?

I have no idea what may that be, but are you sure your phone is bricked?
Have you tried to use normal TWRP 2.6 instead of that one for bricked phones?
I don't know, but maybe this helps:

I'm not the best guy at those things as you can guess.
No, I didn't tried the normal one, gonna try it now, atleast it's worth trying.
I read the post you linked me here and tried those things, unfortunately nothing happened.
Even tried it with ADB, also no solution found there.
But thanks already for the work guys!
suggest you try the following:-
1) power it down, remove battery, remove SIM card and Ext SD card and press and hold your power button for at least 30 seconds to a min, before reinserting battery and entering CWM recovery
2) In CWM recovery, enter Mounts and Storage and Format every partition, that can be formatted, repeat it twice ( You will lose all your data ) meaning you will be trying to get a clean environment for a fresh start. Do not reboot but pull out battery, press power for a few seconds and insert battery.
If you need your data, in mounts and storage, enter usb storage, here with usb connected to PC you can copy your entiere internal SDcard to PC, for salvage later.
3) get into Download mode, to flash the oldest i9000 Stock ROM 2.3.3 with AriesVe.ops using Odin 4.43 ( with ops ticked) How to flash follow this

Hello Everybody !!
I really need help
I just got my T815 (Austria),and I tried to root it.
I read through all the tutorials for this, also Im not new to this, yet it seems I screwed up somewhere.
Here is what I did (to my tab) :
* Downloaded Odin 3.10.xx
* Downloaded sm-t815_cf_autoroot.tar
* Firmware on the tab was 5.0.2 (also did a OTA update before rooting)
* Flashed the sm-t815_cf_autoroot.tar with odin
Rebooted, everything was okay, there was also superuser installed already
* flashed twrp_2.8.6.3_LL_5.0.2_t815.tar
* rebooted into recovery, looked really great (compared to my old CWM on my old tab)
* then I did a full wipe,so I can start over now with the rooted tab.
yet when I rebooted,I just see the white on black (Galaxy Tab S2...) and thats it.
I cant even turn the thing off .
I can get into download mode.
Tried to flash T815XXU1AOI5_T815OXA1AOI5_T815XXU1AOI5_HOME.tar.md5 yet it says
SW REV. CHECK FAIL DEVICE : 2 , BINARY : 1
All I can do now with the device is :
* Boot into DownloadMode
* When I flash twrp_2.8.6.3_LL_5.0.2_t815,I can also access the twrp recovery
but thats all
When I reboot I only see the white on black ,thats all,I cant even turn it off
any ideas ???
help is HIGHLY appreciated !!!
well... I was quite sure Im F*****D even after 3h googeling and flashing stuff... yet it seems it wasnt enough time spend on research.
I managed to bring my tab back from the dead... I found a firmware that was flashable, and now its like nothing ever has happend.
Rooted/Recovery.. everything is okay.
So pleae consider this thread closed,I dont know how to delete it myself.
pS:
What I hate most are posts where ppl ask stuff, then close it themself and say..."nevermind.. I fixed it" without posting the solution.. so I wont do that too
My solution was :
Flashing : T815XXU2AOJ4_T815ATO2AOJ1_T815XXU2AOJ4_HOME.tar.md5
It seems this is newer (version) than the ones I tried to flash,so it was accepted by the device.
I fall in the same condition, i flash the same firmware and odin say it is all ok and the firmware it is charged correctly but i'm in bootloop again.

Reboot your device into Android Recovery Mode: For smartphones >> by pressing and holding Volume Up and Home buttons together and then hold the Power key till screen shows the Samsung logo. Release the power button but keep the other two keys pressed until you see a black screen with green Android bot and blue text. For Galaxy Tab or Note 10.1 >> press and hold the Volume Down + Power keys together for a few seconds until you see the yellow triangle with Android bot followed by a black screen with blue text.
Once in recovery mode, use the Volume Up/Down keys to scroll up or down, and use the Power button to select any option.
Perform the wipe operations by scrolling down to wipe data/factory reset option and select yes to confirm the process. Next, go to wipe cache partition and confirm it.
Once done, go to the reboot system. Then you flash via odin any frimware for your model.
Thanks but the problem is to go to recovery mode. I can't shut down the tablet. The only think i can do is to go in download mode pushing power+down+home button. No others combinations is accepted. I try to discharge the tablet and then insert the cable pushing the correct combination for recovery mode but it don't work.

Its different on a newer Galaxy Tab.
My Note 8.0 i.e. goes "Power button + Volume Up" into recovery.
But on the Tab S2 ,you have to press "home+power+volume down",and the second the screen goes black, you have to press volume up,then recovery is loading (red text in the upper left => then release all buttons). Otherwise the download mode loads again.
Took me a while to figure this out.
If your using TWRP,you can power down your device there if your still caught in a bootloop (i.e. you cant flash the firmware because of a version mismatch, like it was in my case)
It was kinda scary when my tab all of a sudden didnt accept the firmware I was able to flash before.
But I guess the OTA update changed the version,so I had to find a firmware that matches that.
Im quite sure yours isnt hard brick as well, just be patient, there is almost always a way to fix it !!
Just curious. I own a sm-t710. WiFi model but have similar issue. I keep getting error in Odin under boot. Is that the error you were getting?
Not the same error. Odin tell me it is all OK but I can't came out from the bootloop. I can reach only the black and white screen or download mode, not in recovery.

Odin only rejects images if the signature is wrong or it is corrupted.
Seeing as it passed the md5 check it must be the wrong firmware for your device. I suggest you flash the OJ4 firmware.
If it isn't then you have big problems as the only other explanation is a broken emmc.
Which country did you buy this tablet?

Please answer the question. Which country did you buy this device?
If it's USA then you need XAR (CELLULAR SOUTH)

I dropped it off at local repair shop which deals with iPhones and android. I just called them and they said they couldn't do anything. Do I have any options besides using it as a paper weight. Anyone that deals with these repairs?,, I will try to flash XAR file when I get home but with work can't spend too much time on it. I'm running Windows on a mac mini and that is where I have Odin installed. Do you think that may be an issue?
