Nexus 4 Vs Galaxy S3 (gaming) - Nexus 4 General

Hi everyone.
My dad has bought a Galaxy S3 (UK) but offered to swap with me for my Nexus 4.
Which is the superior phone in terms of gaming and why?

Nexus 4 is a superior phone for gaming. Newer GPU

Benchmarks ^^

Both are on par if you're talking the international GSIII.

I would stay with the N4

Not to mention the difference between RAM, CPU, Screen Size on the two phones. N4 is definitely superior.

Hardware wise they're both really close to each other, but s iii have more internal space for you to store your games , especially useful for those HD games that takes over 1gb . siii also have a slightly larger screen so its easier on the eyes. N4 have the advantage of being pure android out of the box no overlay so performance should be a little better, however at this point there is no games I know of that both these device can't handle so you won't notice the difference. The only advantages I see from the nexus is that its more future proof, because the s 3 been out for awhile now. S 4 should be expected to announced in early 2013.

I came from the international gs3 and honestly for gaming I would say they are almost identical except I did notice once on the nexus 4 i was playing granny smith and gameplay stuttered for a second but it only happened once, the gs3 was always smooth.

Nexus 4 outperformed by GS3

I just watched this interesting video.
youtube.com/watch?v=YRpzR6gONXE&list=UUB4dWKbwgl3U3ohBmrT7k3w&index=5
It shows the galaxy s3 running smoother frame rates on grand theft auto, which is odd as on paper the Nexus 4 should be faster.
What are your thoughts guys?
Its gotta be 4.2 android. Gs3 does not run 4.2 and both the n4 and n10 have very low heat thresholds. Google needs to fix these issues.

S3 = $549
N4 = $349
Is it $200 better? Probably not.
Nexus 4>other phones.
S3? DNA? RAZR MAXX? Note 2?
None of them. In terms of value per dollar, hardware and software performance. Not to mention when you consider that for the most part a smartphone is only as good as the software it's running. With all things considered there won't be a "better" phone till the next Nexus is released.
The Galaxy Nexus is still much "better" than most phones around because of the reason stated above. Sure it's hardware is a bit "dated" but it's software is still worlds above many current top phones "old" version of Android, with their ugly overlays.
Probably doesn't support the Adreno 320 yet that's all.
They should test it with an Optimus G, see if it's software related or thermal throttling.

How future proof is the Nexus 7

Looking for a fully featured 7 tablet, that I will be using for web browsing, gaming (intense ones ) and studying.
Planning on using this device for a couple of years before replacing I am assuming 3 to 4 years?
Our family currently has the Tab 2 7.0 and I reckon it's a bit sluggish, is the Nexus 7 exceptionally smooth?
Should I get it?
It's a Nexus device so will be supported for a couple of years at least with the latest and greatest Android.
It will already be a upgrade from the Tab, as it runs Jellybean.
Nothing in the world is future-proof more than a few years (notable exception being my PS3, which is stil bang upto date despite being bought in 2006).
In terms of processing-power it's right up there with the Nexus 4 and the Galaxy SIII, so you're not looking at problems playing games in the near future.
Also, you got an active development community for the device, so even if Google decides to not support the tablet with new versions of Android, you can still keep up to date with what the devs are pumping out.
I've been using mine almost all the time when i'm not sitting in front of my rig, and it has never let me down.
I might say it is likely to be future proof for at least 2 years. It has the hardware, and Google is known to support their nexus line for quite a while. My guess is that it will be in the front line of the upcoming key lime pie update tier.
It's not really possibly to future proof a device until performance can only be increased by a change in architecture, and even then only marginally, much like in the pc category.
Software wise it's a nexus, it will rule the roost for 2-3 upgrades
Hardware wise I'll give it till the new Tegra 4, snapdragon 800 and the exynos 5 octa come out

I know that the new chips introduced at CES 2013 are a few times more powerfull than the Tegra 3. What I ment was that future apps and games will work OK for 2 years. The average life span of a phone and table is 2 years, if it's a flagship device at the time you make the purchase. And the thing is if you fear buying a new device just because it's not future proof, you'll end up never buying anything. 200 dollars isn't a lot of money for what you're getting with this tablet.
Re: How future proof is the Nexus 70
I'd prefer u get the tab 2 rather than the nexus 7. Since the tab has a better build quality, screen.
Both are 1ghz and 1gb ram, so no comparison there.
And Samsung has apps like Memo, s Suggest, etc,
But in terns of futureproofing the Nexus 7 fits well

The N7 is faster than a Tab, its processors clock at 1.3 GHz and in terms of build quality i'd say they are on equal levels.
I know there are a few stories out there about screen lift on early batches of the N7, but since I can only speak from personal experience, I can say that the build quality of mine is exceptional.

You probably shouldn't try to provide an answer when you don't know what you're talking about. The nexus 7 is a 1.2ghz quad core processor, tab 2 is 1ghz dual core, not the same. As for apps Samsung forces on users, there's always plenty of alternatives on the play store.

I hope so. I just bought one off of Ebay and I'm waiting on delivery. I'm a little skeptical of the performance of the N7. I have a SG3 that has higher Quadrant scores, so I hope it has enough processing power to go beyond KLP.
If I were you, I wouldn't give a rats ass about Quadrant scores, as they usually say jack-s**t about the speed or usability of a device.
Same deal with PC-Benchmarks really, they are a marketing tool to get you to buy new hardware.
2 years for a 250$ device seems like more than enough to say that it paid for itself. Most probably the games development will skyrocket, better specs will be required, better screens, more storage space. So, as I said, for me 2 years is a good estimate.

Um. What? It's a quad core 1.3ghz. The companion core is is 500Mhz.
let me put this in perspective... technology changes at a rapid rate. since the n7's release just 6 months, there are now a few devices that outperform it in games (the galaxy note 2 is a great example). play some intense games like need for speed on the n7 and galaxy note 2 and you will see how laggy the n7 can get compared to other devices. the n7 is already becoming an outdated device, hardware-wise. games will only become more demanding, they're not gonna just hit a plateau for two years or wait until the n7 has had a good shelf life. games are already lagging on the n7. if you want something future proof for the next year or two, then good luck, that will never happen with tablets because of the growing rate of the software market. your best bet is to buy the latest and greatest when it's released. that's the only way to "futureproof" yourself.

i never mention the Galaxy Tab 2 in my post.
It's a Nexus device, so it will be supported going forward for quite a while, and since it is easy to unlock, the developer community will support it for quite a while.
It probably won't be the best gaming device in 2 years, since that pushes hardware well beyond most other tasks, but if it starts to get a bit slower, you can always push the clocks. It seems most of the N7s will push the cores to 1.4 or 1.5 without any issues, and 1.6 is doable for burst before hitting thermal limits, with some chips able to run even faster. The GPU pushes quite well too.
I'd fully suggest one as a reasonably future-proof device. Plus, they'll likely still resell for $50-$100 in 2 years, which means you're paying $50-$75/yr for a Nexus device. That's pretty good.

[Q] Nexus 4 vs galaxy s3

Is nexus 4 close to or better than the galaxy s3. if so what is the reason i know it has wirless charging but other than that what else can it do better?
Galaxy s3 also has wireless charging. Both are good phones. The nexus 4 has a better processor, father updates, etc. The gs3 on the other hand has 4glte, an arguably better camera, and if you're a contract guy you have to get it.
Can't go wrong with either.
Also there is already forums for this I'm pretty sure...
My Nexus 10 is better than your tablet. Hah.
Hi,
I had the S III for about 6 months and I have the Nexus since 1 week (before I had a Samsung Galaxy Nexus).
In short Nexus... it's Google: updates, no bloat (no crappy overlay like Touchwiz) pure Android, it's a Qualcomm / Adreno hardware (but Samusng RAM LOL), like the Samsung Galaxy Nexus (TI-> Texas Instrument), more source etc, take a look in the GS III forum about Exynos source's... you'll be disapointed.
It mainly depends of your needs, pure Android experience, with a lot of new ROM with diferent features, kernel, sources ("stock Android", AOSP, CM, a mix, etc...) go the Nexus Line...:good:
If you want multiwindow, pop-up play, smart-stay buit-in and a Samsung device with, in fact good hardware, go for Samsung. But you'll stay ... "sur ta faim" (sorry )...
If you want all the "after market" features, I mean devs , go the Nexus! I owned a Galaxy Nexus then a S III... Back to the Nexus :silly::fingers-crossed::laugh::laugh:
And yes there are thread here and in the S III forum about comparison... After that bigger screen for the S III (not that much) but in hight light like sun it's not terrible, diferent design, 4g / LTE (it depends of your country), extanted storage, etc... and wirless charging for both like b4silver said.
Hard choice... give the Nexus 4 a try not the S III for now...
There's already a thread for this... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2021559
I just traded my galaxy s3 for a Nexus 4. The camera on the s3 ALOT better. The nexus 4 camera isn't bad though. On custom Roms the s3 battery sucked. Nexus 4 wins in this department. I hatred touch wiz on the s3. This was the main reason I switched to the nexus 4. I can also see a big difference in the snappiness of android on 4 cores on the nexus compared to the two on the s3.

I love my nexus 4. I had the s3 and I like the build quality of the s3 better. The nexus 4 looks good but the back cover is horrible. Its the noisiest cover of any phone I've ever used, well I had the lg optimus g and it was the same way. Its so load I actually woke my wife from her slumber while handling the phone. I've managed to take some of the creakiness out by ree removing the back cover and putting tape in the spots that are mushy. Other than the back cover being terrible, I like the nexus 4 better. Hopefully when my bumper comes I won't notice the creaking anymore.
Some of you will think I'm abusing my phone but I'm not. Before I put the tape on the inside edges, just grabbing the phone to pull it out of my pocket I could hear it creaking, it was driving me crazy.

Galaxy S3 pros:
SDCard
Replacable battery
better camera
S2 cons:
Bloatware
cheap feel
expensive
slow(ish) update cycles (not as bad as some thou)
Nexus4 Pros:
Stock Android, more consistent.
VERY affordable, great price performance
Photosphere
prompt updates
Great build quality
Great looks
Smaller than S3 but decent size display still
Better display.
Nexus4 Cons:
Glass back makes it feel slippery
Fragile, so don't drop
No SD Card

You should never compare camera's picture quality based off the resolution specs... I mean we had 8mp cameras on many phones and even digital cameras before but they're all different... You can't just say they both have 1080p so it's equal. It's like saying a coby tv is as nice as my Samsung tv.
Anyways, I have both phones, simply, nexus is the faster smoother phone. Whereas the s3 is fast also but.. there is always that stutter here and there.
I too was kept away from the nexus because no sd slot but, after using the nexus for a week it's definitely the better phone. Btw a custom Rom on the nexus 4 is equivalent or better than the s3. Many early comparisons around the forums or on those review sites may differ... but that's probably based off stock. Custom rom on the nexus 4 blows any other phones away. Yes our camera loses to the s3, ip5, one x/+, I wouldn't even be surprised if we lose to the razr hd maxx. But it's still a good camera...think in between s2 and s3

Just to put my two pence into this; in my experience, I've found that the Nexus 4 is more responsive to the touch/smoother. That being said, I can't deny the speed of the International GS3. Despite the Nexus having superior hardware, I consistently find that the S3 loads most things quicker. Especially when it comes to browsing, both running the same browser, S3 wins EVERY TIME, without fail - when I test, anyway. It doesnt make sense to me either, the Nexus 4 should theoretically far outmatch the S3 in speed, but it doesn't.

[Q] Galaxy S3 Mini or Galaxy Nexus?

Hi, I posted the same thread at the nexus' page.. Now I would like to know your experiences with s3 mini, if it's better with galaxy nexus. I'm buying either one of the two in a few days so I really need to know..
Here are the stuff that I do with my phone:
- Games (if it can handle HD games, then that would be good.. But I mostly play casual games)
- Internet
- Take pictures (facebook, instagram, and print sometimes)
- Call & Text
What I like about S3 mini:
- Gorilla glass (since I have a tendency to break the lcd, I'm really considering this)
- MicroSD slot (I have a class 10 16gb microsdhc card lying around from my previous phone)
So, could you guys share your experiences with your S3 mini? A comparison of the two phones would really help me a lot. I've read in some reviews that s3 mini is kinda slow and tend to lag sometime. Also, how is the development going?
Actually the Gorilla Glass thing is not that clear... we think that our S3 mini doesn't have it. Still a good scratchproof glass, but maybe not gorilla.
However:
-MicroSD slot it's a great feature, I put a 16GB class 10 microSD and it works like a charme, with very nice read/write speed rates
-Of course it can handle HD games! I've tried Shadowgun, NFS Most Wanted, NFS Shift, Asphalt 7 and so on
-Good and smooth browsing experience with stock browser, at least in my personal opinion
About the lags: I've not had a lag for 2 weeks (I got this device few days ago); the only noticeable "lag" happens when in the app drawer you switch from the Apps tab to the Widgets one, but that's because the launcher needs to rebuild the cache
So definetely a good phone, smooth and perfect for everyday use. Also its size! I'm not a lover of gigantic phones and this one is a very good compromise (always IMO).
And as far as development is concerned: it started and it's growing step by step. Give us some time and you'll have many good ROMs :highfive:

+1.
I never had a lag with S3 mini or I don't remember having one since 3 weeks now that i bought my mini. Is a great phone. better that S3 that is huge and looks like a thin brick.
So far I am very content with my S3 mini, which I'm using for about a month now. It's fast, no lags for me. The display is very responsive. The missing Micro-SD slot, inability to change the battery and the poor availability and the higher price were the main argument against Nexus 4 and pro S3 Mini for me.
I have a nexus 4 and just bought a pebble blue mini today for ££189.99 I like both phones nexus has its good points and bad so I am sure the s3 mini is on par as well will look forward to using it.
I never had a lag with SIII mini,i use it for 1 week!!!
I've had both phones and replaced my Galaxy Nexus with the SIII Mini because I wanted a smaller phone.
Performance wise the 2 phones are very similar, camera might be a bit better on the Nexus but I really don't use it a lot on either phone.
Go for the nexus 4. It's definitely better than mini a

The only reason I didn't get nexus 4 (we are talking about n4 not galaxy nexus, right?) is that wasn't available in December and my 2year contract was expiring.. So I got my self Sgs3 mini. N4 or Galaxy Nexus?

Thinking of upgrading, a friend offered to buy my Galaxy Nexus and so I was thinking of selling it(for U.S.$150) and buying an N4. Is there $150 worth of difference in the two? I have never seen an N4 in the wild, so I have no frame of reference. The added bonus is my friend would be switching from an iPhone 4 so we'd be gaining a convert LOL. As far as ROMS and Unlocking/Rooting how is the N4? It's SUPER easy with the GNex of course, same with the N4?
I've owned both, in all honesty I preferred the galaxy nexus

Eh I say neither. The leaked lg device is likely the opt g2, which will obviously lead to a rebranded nexus 5. I like the g2's design, so I say wait for Google I/o for any leaks.

I have to agree with the above statement. I still see GNexi selling for $200-$250. If you're cutting your friend a deal that's one thing. If not, don't short change yourself.
I've owned both, and my opinion is the GNex feels better in hand. The N4 will have a longer upgrade time as the GNex hardware slowly becomes obsolete.
I would say pick up the N4. If nothing else for having a new shiny toy to play with.

I don't know how long the GNex's battery lasted but on PA with the calibrated kernel that comes with it (if I'm not mistaken that is essentially just the stock kernel) I had 24 hours with 2 hours screen on time (lowest brightness) and still 20% left. If that's not good enough for you then you'll need to buy a phone with a huge stock battery or the ability to swap out an extended battery.

That's wrong, I've owned both too and the battery is a tad better on the N4. With custom rom and kernel I was averaging 3.5 hours of SOT with the GNex, but I get around 4 hours on the N4 all stock and no root.
10 seconds?? Am I reading it right?
Its around 5 hours screen on time with franco kernel
In terms of pure performance, the N4 is really good. It has the same GPU as the Galaxy S4, HTC one, Sony xperia Z etc etc etc. This means that most games will be optimized for these phones, and the N4 should age well. IF you are into games this could be worth considering. If not, I've seen the galaxy nexus with jellybean and it was very smooth indeed - so it's not like performance lacks with that phone.
The screen will look very "dimm"/undersaturated compared to your galaxy nexus. I personally used some "saturated" pre-set and calibrated the screen to 2.2 gamma on RGB - and I subjectivly think the screen looks amazing now (day and night difference between stock settings and calibrated). Requires root i believe!
Battery life is just fine for me (~4h screen-on-time) with franco.kernel. I don't have any complaints, but i know many others do. So you should compare what you get with the galaxy nexus and see what people with the N4 get.

The S4 and HTC One have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 cpu. The N4 and Xperia Z have a Qualcomm S4 Pro cpu

Yes, I wrote GPU mate. That is, the graphics card of the SoC. They all have the same Adreno320.
Also, I might add, the difference in architecture between the S4 Pro and 600 is minimal. What runs fast on the 600 will run fast on the S4 Pro as well.

You`re right, misread that. Haven`t been up for so long .
I have them both and if you enjoy playing games don't even think about it. Now I can use the phone as a game console and it is just amazing. Believe me or not, I even prefer it's IPS screen. When I look back at my gnex I can see pixels due to its pentile distribution and I just don't like anymore it's over saturated display. It's a matter of getting use to it I imagine... When you first have it in your hands you really miss it but after some days you love it.
You've got a TOP phone for many years with this. And gpu is even compatible with the upcoming OPENGL 3.0
Let's see what Google IO brings in a couple of days.
Regarding the battery, it's non removable battery is a drawback. Got around 3:30 hours SOT with stock or performance kernels as trinity. But franco kernel is just awesome. Easily getting nearly 5 hours of screen time out of it and performance boosts just when needed in a very smart way.
