The Awesomeness of Swap. (700MB+ ram) - Galaxy Ace S5830 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Mods, please move this thread to General or wherever you think it should belong. It started off as a question that I found the answer to myself after further looking, but now it seems like it'd be helpful for future reference for anyone.
I found this guide here and followed it step by step and I now have 700+MB ram xD. Performance has been increased drastically. I'm using a Micro SD 8GB Class 4.

I don't know. I don't have any heavy games installed since I'm not using A2SD. Everything's working fine though.

That's what backups are for. And SD's are replaceable. For this huge performance boost, I'm guessing it's okay.

Yes funeral, even if sd isn't partitioned, the swap file writes to the sd card, which has a limited number of writes. Swappiness at 100 takes a big toll on sd card life

Nah, set the swappiness lower. I'm gonna take it off though. I'll put it back on when I get my 8GB Class 10 and reinstall A2SD. Don't really have the need for swap at the moment since I don't have any heavy apps installed. Just wanted to see how it worked out. Works amazingly well.

Thanks for the tip, without the swap partition we can't keep on background more than 4 apps maybe, now I can keep 10+, I tested and it's great!

Haha. Glad I'm not the only one it's worked for. But you actually made a partition? The swap file is more convenient. You can change size at will and you don't have to touch your SD and it works exactly like a partition.
How big did you make yours?

Oh, sorry, I thought one thing and wrote another, I'm using a 256MB swap file, not partition. Good enough for me.

Oh ok. Yeah, that's good. I'm about to shrink mine. 500 is a space hog for no reason xD.
Highest swap usage I got was like 69MB.
EDIT: I just realized. With this, we can finally use ICS/JB. The lack of ram made it completely slow and unbearable. I'll start using it again once all the bugs are sorted out

$29.99 Class 10 16GB Micro SD card

Hey guys. I was just looking at Slickdeals.com and came across this AWESOME deal: http://www.frys.com/product/6427462
It's a Wintec (American company) Class 10 16GB Micro SD card... for TWENTY NINE NINETY NINE. I don't know about you, but that's the best deal I've EVER seen for a SD card of that speed and capacity.
Awesome. I would've jumped on it right away if I didn't get an 8GB class 10 a month ago

Regardless of whether it can or cannot read that class, generally when I transfer files, especially larger ones, to the sdcard I use my microSD mount. So the higher class helps there.

I got my patriot class 10 4gb card from newegg for $10. even though the hero doesnt support SD3 it still makes a huge difference. On the app sd benchmark I have the top score for the hero on froyo. and I'm on the top 25 list.

Most cards state the minimum write speed so in this case it is 2mb per second but usually the speeds are higher especially with brand name cards. My class 2 Sandisk card writes at class 6 speeds, test it with a reader connected to the pc.
It seems the product is no longer available.

64GB Micro SD works when formatted to FAT32

I used EASEUS to format on my laptop - and all seems perfect

64gb card
Thank you for your post, I bought the sandisk 64gb card, formated it to fat32 and it works perfectly [in fact its a bit zippier than my previously full 32 gb card which i believe was class 4]. The card was a bit pricey, but well worth it. Thanks again.
i just bought one of these and it works fine in cwm, but is not detected in android, ive tried stock 2.3.4 and leaked ics, neither wants to know of the cards existence.
Solved:, poor formatting on my part.

When I purchased a 64GB Micro SD Card for my phone just before Christmas, it wouldn't work at all - Even when formatted to FAT32.
Its now used in an SD card adapter for my girlfriends Nintendo 3DS... So there's no chance I'm getting that back.
Can you provide the model of the card you purchased? I've got two 32GB cards for my Play currently, Both have exactly the same apps cloned between them but different caches for different games - So I have to swap over every time i want to play a game on the other card lol. xD (Most of the are ROMs mind you...)
Buying know thanks for the tip.
Fat32 can be formatted up to 2tb. That is its maximum

OK... I just got this card and transferred all the data from my 32GB micoSD to the new 64GB microSDXC... and the weird thing is that it is taking up more space on the SDXC than the SD... so I'm guessing that the problem is that it isn't formatted to FAT32... so how do I do that? Using Win7Pro, I don't see an option to format it to FAT32... any ideas?
I formatted this card with the phone but it is also possible to format it with a computer using third party format tools.
And the problem with the data which takes more space from your 64GB card than it took from your 32GB card could be related to the clustersize. Maybe the system chose a bigger size in order to have less effort to deal with the size of the card. However if there are files which are below this clustersize they are always as big as the clustersize. So the data needs more space.
Thanks for the tip I really gotta try this 64gb would practically hold my life lol

My phone has an annoying glitch where I move or delete files on the SD card, and the SD card shows that there's new space after deletion, but when I try to put in a new file, there's no space!
Every couple of months I have to transfer the files I wanna keep to my PC, then format the card to get the lost capacity back. I first noticed it when I tried putting some anime episodes on the card when it showed 2GB free, but then it said the card was full!
The aforementioned glitch only happens when I delete/move files through Android or when the storage is mounted to USB. Never happens when the card is plugged into Windows and being manipulated directly through an adapter instead of the phone.
If you guys transfer a lot of stuff on those cards, I'd suggest getting one of these
I have a red one and it's super handy when you wanna transfer, format etc. Plus it's got a keychain so if you have school, you can keep it on hand.
By using that instead I've avoided the storage issues.

How fast can ACE read an SD?

Who can really answer this one? What is the maximum speed ACE can read data from an SD?
For example a reading speed for a class10 SD can reach 20MB/sec. So can ACE really cope with that?
I am asking this cause I also have a class4 with maximum read speed at 13MB/sec.
So, is there a limit at how fast ACE can read data from an SD? It hasn't got a very powerful processor so is there really a need for a class10?
Do not tell me about write speed, that I know!

don't worry. the bus speeds between the RAM module (most likely a LPDDR1 RAM) and the CPU is much much faster than that (at least 200MB/s). The bus connecting the SD card reader and the CPU also have a good bandwidth and therefore you can be sure that whatever Class rating of your SD card is, it won't go to waste.
As a side point, do take note that Class rating of different brands are not the same in real speeds. E.g. Sandisk Class 2 is faster than Kingston Class 2.

Now go to this link to test the read/write speeds of your card.H2test2 1.4.
Just take note that this app is written by a German and so take some time to slowly navigate it. Also how this thing works is that it auto generates a file and send it back and forth from your computer and the sd card. Which means that ideally you should clear your whole card so that the utility can work. However the utility can work with whatever free space your sd card has currently. Meaning only the read/write speeds of the "empty" space gets tested, not the entire card if you get what i mean.

It's good to hear it! Is there any lag when using micro sd, doing something about micro sd? Playing games, looking for files, watching movies, listening music etc.
Such a hassle that you need to root your device first before you can do a workaround to install or move apps into the external micro sd.
awesome! I'm going to get my hands on one. still stuck with a 32GB SDHC atm, music and video files have never been larger
Also with app directory Bind can move the data you want on external sd in order to have more internal memory, very useful when you have installed several games thd occupying a lot of memory.

Not everything, only the apps installed on the old SD card. But is should work if you copy the contents of the old card to the new one. Or use a backup solution to restore apps on the new card (like Titanium).

I have no problems to.
buy on amazon.
i have the sandisk 64 gb bought for 46 euro
Someone asked about benchmarks with AnTuTu so here they are. I also used SD Tools and CrystalDiskMark (This gave approximately 20MB/s Read and 9MB/s Write sorry forgot to take screenshot). Each gave a very different result. I formatted the card FAT32 using fat32format (since it will not read exFat). Expected a little better speed as my 32GB Class 10 AData card produces better results (almost double the write speed). Haven't really noticed any lag and haven't had a chance to check battery usage. The extra space is good as I was filling up the 32gb card.
Is it just me or does it take a very long time to scan the media (both on card and on internal memory) at startup?
Hi guys, can somebody confirm that 64 gb card with exfat works fine on stock JB and Cm 10.1?

Well, what to say?! Not everything got better in newer versions, unfortunately. Google implemented a lot restrictions with regards to external SDcards.
However, I can't seem to spot any really consuming Apps in your Screenshot, except maybe the Games. Possibly helpful to post a shot of settings -> memory to sort it out.

Anyway ill just wait for a way to unlock the bootloader without losing drm keys and then eventually im sure a custom rom will come out. Until then ill just have to use my computer to modify my sd card. NBD.

Any app can write to its own folder on the SD card. Without root, no app except system apps can write to the whole SD card for security reasons. This will be changed with Android L (introduction of a new permission).

That's not what I meant, I use solid explorer but can't actually modify anything on the card just read. As the guy below you said only system apps can transfer stuff or it has to go into the android folder.
@OP:
I'm 90% sure you don't need a lot of those apps. Try and see if you really need **** and uninstall it if the launch count is below a certain threshold (back in Gingerbread, I set mine to once per month and I ended up uninstalling almost half my apps). Or try finding a lighter app that does the same thing.
Only once in my entire life was I able to fill up a 16GB device with apps only (on a 16GB Nexus 7), and even those were just games (of 100MB+ in size).
My point -- 16GB is more than enough for the majority of users, there is no reason for a developer to waste time doing edits to please the minority you are part of.
Also your OP is ridiculous. And the post isn't in the correct Forum subsection.
You're German ffs, show that! :ID

http://www.techradar.com/news/phone...5-0-shows-google-still-loves-sd-cards-1271803
According to this google is loosening the sd card restrictions on the new android, at least as it regards storage of third party apps on the sd card.
Just wanted to share this to spread the hopefully true news, maybe an app2sd will also be implemented.
As I said three posts before
This thread absolutely does not belong in the Original Development subforum.
You could root and get xposed running which could fix your problem.
Trow away navigator, it's rubbish. Can use sygic and put the roadmaps on the sd. Saved me 4gb internal memory.
