My Nexus 4 is an embarrassment - Nexus 4 General

Apologies for the rant folks but I need to get this off my chest!
<rant>
Google needs to fix the Nexus 4 bugs fast
My state-of-the-art Nexus 4 phone has some major issues that aren't just frustrating - they're embarrassing. The camera will often stop working, especially when used in low light or after taking lots of pictures. I was out for a Christmas dinner with friends last night and we asked the waitress to take a picture of the group. I handed her my phone and ended up red-faced because the bloody camera wouldn't work. I also had the camera freeze with the flash still lit up on numerous occasions last night. How the hell did this get through testing? This isn't a one-off - it happens *every* time I try to take lots of pictures. I expect the camera to work.
Can you imagine the furore if the camera on an iPhone did this? People would be foaming at the mouth.
And the camera quality is pretty poor with many shots out of focus and terrible red-eye on others (with no red-eye reduction mode available) and none of the fancy new image filters can fix it. Yet I'm pretty sure ICS had a red-eye reduction filter.
And I also have a WiFi issue which means my connection speed will drop from 40MB to around 2MB for no reason. I have to toggle WiFi off/on to clear it. Rumour is that it's a problem with the WPA2 encryption used by some routers but I have yet to prove this myself and all our other devices are fine, my Nexus 7 included.
And this morning the phone rang and I couldn't answer the call because the buttons on the incoming call screen simply didn't work. It was charging at the time which I expect is the issue but even so...
In my humble opinion Google needs to get a 4.2.2 update out that addresses issues like this quickly because right now I am seriously considering selling this device and getting something else.
I am not your beta-tester Google. This just isn't good enough.
</rant>
I feel better now. Sorry if this thread sounds a little selfish but I expected so much more from a Nexus device. My 2011 Xperia arc S might of been a bit laggy but at least it was 100% reliable.

Well then return it.. or maybe learn how to use it first.
Personally I don't have any of these issues.

I no issues with my camera from Christmas dinner last night either, from 3 to 8:30pm EST I was snapping away.
No wifi issues here either.
Either yours is broken or some crap app is causing the issue.

Had the camera thing happen to me yesterday. Also have a screen bug that makes part of the screen disappear.
Buy I consider these android problem's which can be fixed. Not Nexus 4 problems.

OP should re-flash the stock ROM. If his issues continue, I'd RMA the device.

That's just the price. The actual specs could be considered state of the art.

I'm not sure why the 350 price tag seems to give people a sense of cheapness. This is what a high end phone should sell for. Instead companies **** all over the little people of the world by inflating the price by 300% and lots of times more. Google is merely just sticking it back to those companies and also marketing their ecosystem...

Google says(look at the specs of the phone)... BTW I use the crap out of my N4 camera and have not had these problems. Also I leave mine plugged inost of the day at work (I'm in a vehicle) and have never had an issue with answering. Id RMA it but it up to u if u wanna wait and see if 4.2.2 fixes these issues. I would have though 4.2.2 would be out by now but oh well.
Using Tapatalk 2

did you put in a custom rom?

The camera bug is well documented as are the WiFi problems. This is not just an issue with my device. I'm on stock 4.2.1 fwiw. Maybe a reflash is worth a try but I doubt it.
Funny how when anyone dares to criticise this device people get all defensive though!

I've had some times where the call and lock screen are unresponsive. Usually there is a home and back button at the bottom for seemingly no reason and I have to hit ”back" to get back to the state where I can use the lock screen.. I'm guessing this is causing the call screen to lose interactivity sometimes as well. I'm suspecting issues related to lock screen widgets/extra functionality/Google Now as none of this used to happen on previous revisions, it seemed to start when that feature set was introduced. I also accidentally bring up the camera from the lock screen which gets annoying, but that's more my fault in the way I pick the phone up sometimes if I "pry" it up when it's sitting against something. Annoying, but whatever.
I have had no camera issues specially yet, though I haven't used it extensively only occasionally.

We are all beta testers for any phone we use. How do you think they know what to change and fix for future models.
Still it sure does not seem so awful for most others.
Plus, we have no idea what apps you may be using that may be messing things up.

I totally agree with OP.
Was in Switzerland last week and the camera also decided to stop working, flash would stay on, screen wouldn't turn off and it was boiling.
Turned it on and off but during those 2 days happened more then once.
It was embarrassing because I was telling my family how good this phone was but they just laughed at me. Everyone one else has an iPhone even the kids (3 iPads, 4 iPhone, 2 imacs)
So difficult to get one so might sell mine. I want a phone that works and I am not spending my money to do beta tests.
Ps. This is my second one and I we are not even talking about the rattle and the buzzing

Need input on how G2X functions as a phone

Considering buying the G2X in 3 days although I am having serious misgivings after reading some of these threads which list the serious issues this device seems to be plagued with. I would greatly appreciate any feedback on how the device functions as a phone such as call clarity and volume through headset and speaker phone clarity and volume. Also apparent signal strength etc. Any and all help is warmly received.
I had the 2x for a month nov. And i will say that the phone have some problems.but its a great phone, and many people are working on it, so it will be a very good phone. I will recommend it to every body. Sorry the bad english.

Thanks again I probably will
I have the phone since last friday (Vodafone Germany tho) and it looks like I got a good one lol... I also read all those threads here weeks before getting it and actually made sure that I wouldnt have any issues getting a new one from Vodafone if I had lots of problems.. turns out I dont. Had a few forcecloses the first day (even F-Secure crashed but I never ever launched it so far) but since then not a single one. Also no reboots or major laggs or something similar as reported in that other thread.
The sound quality is actually pretty good, way better then the Nexus One, the speaker is way better.
GPS is fast enough, didnt experience any trouble at all.
But I am going to install a Custom Rom as there are a few lagg spikes when launching apps and stuff but nothing really bad. I just want to see how fast this phone can really be
Also, keep in mind that the device we'll get in the US will be different in build and software from the international version. The speaker/mic combo will most likely be similar, but things like GPS and call quality can vary drastically because they're based on software.

Good point! I use GPS a lot every day and most of the day. I have a Vibrant now and the GPS leaves a lot to be desired. Teetering back and forth as to whether to pull the trigger and get it or not. Probably will though. Been waiting for it to come out for awhile.
I had a Nokia N8 at home, it could find satelites really quick. The LG2X can't.
The speakers are really the worst hardware part of the device.. really bad sound it's the biggest negative. Overall it is a great phone , the best phone I've ever had, and enjoyed the most.. just too sad the soundquality + speakers is really bad imo.. but my contacts told me that they can here me very good.. so its just you suffering on that not the callers -_-
I can just recommend it. But with the sidenote you to check those things by yourself first live, if these attributes are really that important to you, so you don't get disappointed after.
Would like to hear your thoughts of it when u use it, i believe they could have improved G2x compared to the LG2x, cause it has other messsurements and vanilla android so i guess they reacted to the feedback which was given by the buyers.
Sorry for this long text xD
PS. Just tested GPS again.. and it found within 30 seconds within the building =) GPS is fine!
Every phones has its problem. Nothing is perfect. The o2x as a phone is good. No major issues about it. And after installing paul's MCR, it became a lot lot better.
GPS works fine for me. It just depends where am i. There are places where i can only get a fix after 30-60 seconds but most of the time i can get a fix for 5-10 secs only.
Hey guys, thx for the opinions.
At this moment I have an HTC HD2 and after having owned a numerous number of HTC's I am fedup with them. It seems they make models that always have some issue either batt wise, speaker wise etc.
As I use my phone mainly for gps is there someone who can upload a video on youtube showing the startup with gps status or something?
Also my HD2 has/had a quick lock but the receiver fails in other departments like having jitter on the output making the gps go in crazy steps or circles.
I would also love to see a video of how the screen looks in sunlight and how the speaker sounds when you are using the device as navigation in the car.

Thanks so much for your kind input. This is just the kind of feedback I need to make a prudent decision. My only phone is a cell phone so I need the phone part to be first class as well as the GPS which I use on a daily basis(also hourly). While agree it's not the end of the world, it's a complaint I see often here in kernel and ROM threads. While a lot of it is due to wonky behavior due to OC (either CPU or GPU), it's really just exacerbating an issue that is already present.
Besides, UI bugs are some of the most prevalent and immediately noticeable to more "common" end users. While functionally it's not debilitating, it's an aesthetic scar that doesn't need to be there.

Hmmm.. So I assume it doesn't matter that I need exactly 15 seconds everytime I get a notification to pull down the status bar, caused by flipbacks. Okay I'm like 1000% sure Google noticed it anyway, cause its on most devices, also 100% stock ones (like me) so...

Thanks OP, have added my star.
I had not noticed this problem but I was intrigued.
I could not duplicate the problem, but I am using Apex launcher, not the stock launcher. Does the problem occur in all launchers? Also I am not using the stock ROM.
I wonder if this problem happens with only some units, or perhaps it relates to those user's expectations. Maybe they expect their device to react more quickly than it is able to.
Far be it for me to be dismissive of people's satisfaction with their devices, but that bug-report thread has a lot of problems. It contains over-reaching claims and supposed knowledge of the problem's causes and solutions.
Again, I don't write off these people's unhappiness but I personally would not star that issue.
i too have this problem when on stock rom..now on PA beta 9 with m-kernel, the problem still exist...and it's very annoying...i even thought there was a problem with my touch screen panel and sent it to asus for repair but when i got it back, the same problem still remains..
Not starring because it does not bother me.
Life has too many other issues to worry about having to occasionally re-swipe.
Now pop-up ads in the Yahoo app could get me started...

Well over 500 people have voted to say they have a shonky screen, either one fault, several or all listed.
If Asus & Google don't by now know that there is a serious problem with QC of the actual screen and with the build quality then no amount of petitioning will work.
I noticed this issue minutes after pulling this thing out of the box, this might not bother you people who casually use their tablets, but top those of us who have been using android since the G1 notice this. It bothers me so much that I am considering taking this junk back and using the money to get a real tablet from Samsung.
This issue is so annoying to me, I not only notice it on the stock launcher, but also Nova and Apex. Now, the launcher I can deal with, but where I becomes a deal breaker for me is the browser, whether it's chrome or the stock browser in CM10. Trying to scroll around the OS that requires some flicking reminds me of trying to flick scroll on a resistive touch screen, I think that best describes the issue.
I just wanna know if it's fixable through a software update or a hardware problem, cause if it's the latter, this thing is going back, and that's too bad because it was a Santa gift, so I'll have some explaining to do.......

As I stated (not in precise terms sorry) in the OP, it would be a mistake to think that xda threads are the first place companies like Google and Asus check to see what issues people are having. They have issue and bug trackers for a reason. The universe does not revolve around our little community.
Also, this issue pertains to the general consensus that touch screen issues (like bounce back) have become exacerbated on 4.2 and above. Not anything regarding physical QC issues (though, to be fair, may very well be the root cause, but that is an entirely different issue; the fact of the matter remains that anecdotally it appears the touchscreen responded better on 4.1.2)
And besides, I'm just looking out for the well being of this device's future. Reporting bugs on bug trackers is important to these developers.

Yea the notification bar is better on 4.2.2, but the launcher still does it, nova prime does it too, and even when on dolphin or boat browser sometimes when you flick it will scroll nicely & sometimes a flick wont move the page much at all, weird and annoying, would be a much better experience if it was fixed!
This is a huge issue for me. Is there a way to increase or decrease sensitivity? Maybe that would help.

Interesting, I thought I was the only one who had noticed this. Don't know why I haven't seen this thread earlier.
For me I solved this by using apex launcher, somehow you never get those annoying jumpbacks. I tried nova launcher as well but it worked as bad as the original launcher. Going to star tomorrow.

I wonder if HTC could do something about the night mode. Since it captures better photos in night mode than the phone adapting to the darkness. Maybe do something were the sensor notices it's dark and reviews the time on the phone to automatically go into night mode.

In fact, I do really like the iphone-similar appearance on HTC One.
It's iPhone like only in that it's metal and square... It's distinctively HTC in design though. It's way more EVO than than iPhone. I'm pretty proud that they made all of the choices for the right reasons. Now my biggest concerns are s off at some point and getting more than 1 OS upgrade out of them.

NEVER happens to me so I doubt 4.2.2 will remedy for ya. Maybe look into other avenues to resolve this issue
I don't know what else it could be. Others with different devices hold their connection from the same location while mine drops. Whatever the case, it's getting old. I'm done talking to Sprint about it as the answer of "we are working on the towers right now“ doesn't work for me. If they were truly working on them the guys I work with would have the same problem.

That's probably the only practical reason.
tommason1968,
I know exactly what you are talking about! I had a thread complaining about the same thing. Took my phone into the Sprint store and it failed "once" a test and they gave me a new phone and the exact same thing happens to my current phone. Can't go down the street (or even sometimes sitting still) and I lose data connection. Listen to streaming radio on Tune-In and it cuts out constantly. Used the Scout (Telenav) GPS and always got "There is no cell phone coverage / Now there is cell phone coverage" during a trip to Wisconsin and Mississippi this month.
Heard the excuse that the towers are being upgraded and that is the reason service is so poor. Almost tempted to say well put that in writing so that I can go to another wireless company without an ETF.
Came from the HTC LTE and never had so many drop outs. Yes, there were marginal spots that I would lose service, but in the past I have made it to Wisconsin and back without dropping service once not to mention 50 - 100 times, so like you think it is directly related to the phone. When you take the phone into the Sprint store, they are like well nothing what we can do, or well that is a lot of work and doubt we will find something. It is tempted to reactive my old HTC LTE and see how it does because I know where the marginal areas are at and the areas that are not marginal that I still lose connectivity on a constant basis with my HTC One.
Just wonder if like the first I-phone made of solid shell, that the metal casing isn't affecting how well the phone does in the terms of the ability to connect and stay connected to the cell towers.
For me, it's gotta be the way ZOE clips will be captured as a single video file instead of 20+ images. Each time I take a ZOE clip all those 20 pics get backed up on my G+ cloud.

I've managed to get rid of all the lag by turning off all animations. I just need better battery life. Everything else has been promised.
I just want the added features of 4.2.2. I want quick toggles, lock screen widgets, etc. And the added battery percentage and what not.

What if I told you...
EQS and percentage are already available on Viper and HTC will not incorporate lock screen widgets.
4.3
Who cares about 4.2? 4.3 began rolling out to the Google Experience/Play HTC Ones a few days back which has a functional IR blaster! That, with CM's new camera and this phone is going to be pretty awesome, pretty quickly.

I'm with explicit. I like the aosp toggles much much more along with HTC's version of the battery percent. Also, the update will come with lockscreen widgets. They already have the implemented in the Intl version.
I for one am pretty stoked about this update. It will include everything that I like in aosp plus it will have IR.

That the EQS included with Viper looks hideous to some of us?
Just ribbing you, but seriously-- I cannot stand how it looks in the slightest. Native quick toggles are also one less app needed to replicate functionality, which is nice if you're trying to keep things slim.

Yeah. I think that the EQS are stupid looking too. Just wanted to make sure it was known that most of these features already exist in some form. I love the Holo style EQS, though. In the meantime, I'm using Floating toucher. Its pretty cool.
I'm more excited about the camera improvements. The number of pictures out of focus is too damn high!
I expect that it will be the only update released for this phone.

No way. This is a flagship device that's barely 4 months old. Support has to be for at least a year.

Good one
I'd be willing to guess the 4.2.2 delay is a Sprint issue more than an HTC one.
I personally am not even excited about the 4.2.2 update anymore, due to how long it's taken and now that 4.3 is out.

I'm not excited about either one. I have a Nexus 7 with 4.3 on it and it doesn't look/feel much different from when I used CM on my LTE. There just isn't anything to really worry about other than the kernel.

to Flex or not to Flex

ive been with XDA a while now and it keeps me off the streets and away from drugs and alcohol. I have had the Infuse, Note 1 and now the Mega 6.3.
I have rooted and flashed more times than I can count, even if I take my shoes off, except for the Mega. (stooped bootloader)
having a few minor issues with my Mega and have been given the option to trade in. even with its issues, I love the real estate of 6.3 inches. who wouldn't right?
once you feel the girthyness, a 5.? screen just doesn't cut it.
so in the store I discovered the Flex and was surprised to find out it is a 6 inch screen. that I can deal with.
I have been doing some reading here as to the satisfaction with the device. I do trust the majority of folks here on XDA and would like to solicit even more feedback. maybe some inclination as to the possible future of development here.

I can attest to the awesomeness of the screen real estate for sure! It is a 720p screen so keep that in mind, but videos and pictures do not suffer bc of it.. I absolutely love the way it feels in hand, in pocket, and during a phone call. This is the first phone I've used that I can pinch between my shoulder and cheek, and not have someone complain because they can't hear me anymore.. The phone is only lacking in one area, IMO, and that would be the lack of integration of the screen.. The lock screen effect is cool, but I'd like to see that utilized in menus, Chrome, Google Now and the like..The battery is a damn monster, no doubt about it! I easily get two days worth of use and 6 hours screen time every charge cycle!
there is at least 5 or 6 threads just like this man; no need to start another one..

I did mean to add that I love my flex. As to development it's looking like a bootloader bypass is in the near future with several devs already saying they're bringing AOSP based ROMs and I know I'll be releasing a stock based with light theme work (i.e. no more ugly grey).

I recognise your avatar from the Note threads, or was it the Infuse? Although I havent seen it in a while.
As stated, I did see and have read 2 or 3 post with the like or dislike agenda in the threads. I am also aware if the many threads that exist in the context of "what is the best rom".
The future of the development was intended to be the main question. I got the Mega in hope of a real future in development for the phone and now it is all but dead, for At&t variation that is. I was attempting to not walk down that road again.
With your experience here and a recognized face sort of speak, I tbought that your XDA experience, and others alike, might see that and offer the valued insight I seek.
But I thank you for your very predictable response.

The Flex hasn't been out that long. With time development should pick up but who really knows. LG locked it down good and at this time we have no recovery. I'm a flash whore as well but it's nice to take a break and get other things done. lol

You didnt ask about the future of development in your OP post, so that wasn't addressed by anyone.
And, who can say what the "future" holds? At this point, we're just hoping for a custom recovery..
Your welcome for the predictable response....

It's an awesome phone. Like LG's software better as well. Runs smoother than my note 2 and feels better in the hand. I honestly don't think you go wrong if you decide on this phone. Best thing to do is go to a store and test it out. Worse case you have 14 days to test drive it, just need to pay the 50$ restocking fee.
Personally haven't felt the need to root this beast yet. It does amazing out of the box.

I think I'm going to switch to the Note 3. I have a few apps that I use that don't work properly on this phone, that worked perfectly fine on my Note 2. Also I miss the physical home button. I end up hitting the onscreen home button rather than the spacebar on my Flex, and I hate that.
Don't get me wrong, I love the Flex, and I would keep it if it weren't for those issues. I think if you factor out this issues I have, its a much nicer device

Can always change around the home keys and see if that helps.
Curious as to what apps don't work. All my apps work just fine. Had a ton of them to boot.

I hated that as well lol. There is the option to swipe the bottom row keys to the right or left. It might help some, but I found that it becomes a nuisance after a while. I was in your boots as well and did make the switch to the N3 and am happy. I miss the curve and a few small nuances of the Flex, but I don't regret switching.
Pretty sure the G2 xposed app lets you shrink the nav bar so you won't hit the button by mistake. LG needs to have that option with stock.

its a great phone, but its not ever going to get any development traction, youre probably better off switching to a note or a g2
