Hi everybody, I'm quite scary about what I've done today with my tab.
1. I was running under CM 9.1 stable and everything was fine.
2. I backed up my data using ROM Manager and tried today a nightly build of CM 10 from get.cm. I installed it from CWM as written in Cyanogen wiki. Before install I was warned about partition format that wasn't the same as previsouly, and I was asked to choose the update.zip again to enable the ROM flashing to start. CM 10 booted correctly, and it ran very well at first. Then I chose to install Gapps through CWM, the same I did for CM 10.
3. After rebooting, I experienced a bug: the included keyboard kept crashing and was then unusable. I decided then to restore my backup of CM 9 through CWM.
4. I did not encounter any trouble restoring the backup to my old CM 9. But I had no radio, no IMEI, no baseband etc.. in "settings/about the device" and at this point I didn't know that this was because "/radio" wasn't mounted.
5. Now I don't remember what I exactly did but I try wiping caches, restoring again, reinstalling CM 9 stable, reinstalling CM 10 stable, restoring my backup again, flashing the Kernel using Hemsfall but what I remember is:
- I first had problems with /cache
- After that I had the "E:format_volume: "make_ext4fs failed on /cache" message
- My tab reboots if I try to install CM9 stable
- I tried to install a fresh firmware through http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1133590 but I get stuck at hidden.fs
Now my tab can only boot to CWM or download mode, and whether I choose to flash to CM9 or CM10 I get the message:
assert failed: getprop("ro.product.device")== "galaxtab"...
E: Error in /sdcard/cm-10-nightly....zip
(Status 7)
Installation aborted
I don't know what to do now, and I'm quite desperate right now, please help me to get rid of that "make_ext4fs" error. I'm really afraid.:crying:
When you update to cm10, the mtd partition scheme changed to a new one. Nandroid restore won't work until the partition is made back to the same as when backup was taken.
To be able to run cm again, you need to restock to GB using Odin,
then flash overcome kernel to get cwm.
Only the kernel, not the ROM.
Then use cwm to install cm,
then restore from nandroid.
Follow my signature for overcome guide.
Get GB stock safe v5, the PDF guide, and the overcome kernel.

Thanks you very much, be blessed, it works perfectly using your solution. I felt really really bad, thank you so much!
you are welcome.
You may want to try CM10 again.
Make sure you flash gapps for cm10 only, not gapps for cm9 or cm10.1
It shouldn't be as unstable as you said.

I was on Darkys ROM for some months without any flashing problems. Now i wanted to change from Darkys ROM 10.1 (Gingerbread 2.3.4) to Galnet MIUI. I had to downgrade to Froyo and then install the CWM zip in CWM. This was NOT succesful. It always says "Installation aborted (Status 7)". Then i tried to install CyanogenMod 7.1. Upgraded to Gingerbread Stock with CWM 3 and when i first flashed it via ODIN the phone first booted in the standart Android CWM display (dont know the name sry). The phone automatically formated cache etc. but then it showed me 2 times "/efs is not mounted". I was able to boot and to open CWM but ALWAYS when i want to install ANY CWM ROM it shows me the message with Status 7 ...
EDIT: The message when i try to install a zip via CWM:
--INSTALLING: SDCARD: update-cm-7.1.0-GalaxyS-signed.zip
Finding update package
Opening update package
Installing update
Checking state of BML/MTD
assert failed: run_program("tmp/updater.sh) == 0

How can i mount /efs again and make CWM ROM Flashing able again?
Thank you.
I am not a dev, but I suggest you do a fresh ODIN flash to stock rom or this SIMPLY HONEY ( its got odin version & hence very easy to install ) rom.
I already flashed several (stock) roms... still not working
The first thing you every do before flashing a rom is a nandroid backup.... use this to recover...
I hope to hear oh thanks i didn't remember about that, lol. But i do not expect it...
Do you have any backups, of the /efs maybe? If you do then find out how to put that back on..
An option would be to use adb to try fix it, first try the obvious and try mount the ef, if that doesn't work then tell me what files you have in the efs... and we'll try help you from there.
If you don't know hoe to use adb there is a pinned thread in the general forum, and I have made a there is a basic tutorial in a number of places either search here or google
Okay this is my first thread and post on this site. This is a great place to learn and I'm loving it. Hello all.
I've been pretty succesful so far at flashing roms on my captivate for the past couple months and this is the first problem I've ran into.
So I was coming from a CM7 nightly and I flashed the Beta 1 ICSSGS rom from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1362092
Obviously I flashed the Beta 1 kernel that came along with it. It works well, it's beta so I know it's not perfect.
Now I'm trying to flash the teamhacksung build 3 ICS rom since it is to be CM9 later, but I get a message that basically says
assert failed: getprop("ro.product.device") == "captivate"
(status 7)
Installation aborted.
I then tried to flash back to the CM7 nightly and got the same error.
When I go to about phone in setting its says my device is an i9000. I know this has something do with the first ICS rom I flashed. Possibly the errors have something to do with my kernel or bootloader??
I know roms pretty well, but I have a very vague knowledge of kernels and bootloaders. I know, I know, I shouldn't be playing around with this stuff if I don't know 100% what I'm doing, but hey I got learn somehow. My apologies if there is already a solution to this posted in this forum, I tried to search but I'm not exactly sure what I'm looking for.
Any Help? Thanks!
I would suggest doing a full wipe and installing the latest nightly of CM7. Once installed reboot but not all the way. Pull the battery on the kernel splash screen and reboot into recovery and flash CM7 again. Reboot fully into the rom this time.Once you get that far restart the phone in CWM and flash build 3 of the pre CM9 rom. Do the same as above and flash it twice. After flashing the second time flash GAPPS. Then reboot. You should be all set. This is the process that worked for me.

I did the wipe data/factory reset, wiped the cache partition and the dalvik cache. I try to flash the CM7 nightly and I get the same getprop error and installation aborted everytime.
Am I missing something?
Ok I think I figured it out. I have to one-click back to stock, flash CM7, then flash teamhacksung's build.
Or I believe you can go into your build.prop and change everything to i897 and or captivatemtd. Part of the issue I think is that the other ics does not use the datadata partition because that is also part of the issue I had when switching either back to my nandroid backup of cm7 or to team hack sung ICS. I COULD BE WRONG HERE.
I went into cwm, advanced, formatted system, data, cache, and also tried to format datadata. Then i went back and ran wipe data/factory reset. Next flashed team hacksungs ICS twice before trying to boot it up.
Sent from My KickAss CM7 Captivate
Ok, so I edited build.prop and changed it all to SGH-I897 and captivatemtd. Now when I look at about phone it shows that I have a SGH-I897, but I still get the same getprop error when I attempt to flash teamhacksungs rom or CM7.
When I go to the advanced menu of my recovery (which is CWM-based Recovery v5.5.0.0), the only options available are: Reboot recovery, wipe dalvik cache, wipe battery stats, report error, key test, show log, partition SD card, and fix permissions.
There are no options for formatting system or datadata in my advanced menu.
So I guess that means I have one-click back to stock. I was trying to avoid that but oh well.
Unless someone has another idea maybe?
Hi fellows,
I need your guidance and expert advice in resolving a situation, I have ran into recently. I was trying to install CM10.1 on my brother's galaxy Note GT-N7000 international version which was running official ICS 4.0.4.
Since, I had experience in installing different ROMs on my Galaxy S2, Nexus 7 and Xperia Arc so I was not worried about it being a big deal. So, I followed the procedure described in this page http://techgoneinsane.blogspot.com/2012/08/installing-cm10-on-galaxy-note-n7000.html?m=1 and used Odin and file from 'speedmod' to gain root access and flash CWM which was successful. Then, as planned, I tried update zip in the CWM recovery for CM10.1 nightly. But, I came across error 'Status 7' installation aborted. This was new to me, so I tried few things like 'factory reset', wipe data etc and even tried installing stock ROM ICS XXLRK which was previously installed but no avail. I tried several other ROMs like stable CM9 and other nightlies but no success. The phone is stuck on the boot Samsung logo with yellow triangle. However, I'm able to go in the recovery and download mode.
Upon doing couple of Google searches, I came to know, quite a number of people have faced this error by I couldn't understand the fix properly so can anyone of you please guide me for the solution. Thanks.
Your help will be greatly appreciated.

If you are on Speedmod's recovery (which is safe), you can try this:
1) Download the latest CM10.1 kernel and save it to your SD card.
2) Flash it in Recovery (Install zip from sdcard > choose zip from sdcard), then reboot in the new Recovery (advanced > reboot recovery).
3) Do a full wipe (even format preload and system in "mounts")
3) Flash the latest CM10.1 build
4) Flash the 4.2.2 Gapps
5) Do a data wipe / factory reset
6) Reboot
You got a yellow triangle because you flashed an unofficial kernel through Odin. To get rid of it, use TriangleAway.
Good luck!

You're welcome. Glad I could help . If you feel like it, hit the Thanks button on Chasmodo's first message in the repository (where you downloaded your CM10.1 kernel). He really deserves it. You may also want to do the same on Entropy's first post in the unofficial CM10.1 thread :good: That way, you'll show your support and appreciation .
I want to install Gingerbread with AbyssNote and Paranoid Android with Asylum N8 and switch between them by backing up and restoring through CWM.
I was told this should work however it fails when restoring Paranoid Android - the md5 check is good but it has an error of "failed to restore /system" when I try to restore PA. Previously when I tried this setup it also failed so I don't think its these specific roms or kernels that cause it.
Is there any way that I can do this successfully?

Make sure that the kernel you use to backup the rom is the same one you use to restore it. I'd advise flashing a kernel, reboot to recovery, backup and then again flash whichever kernel you want.
I'm running 10.1.3-galaxysmtd. When I try to update from the CyanogenMod updater it downloads 10.2, but when I try to apply it, the phone boots and gets to about only 20% on the progress bar before it restarts and then boots normaly into 10.1.3
Does anyone know what is the problem?

Do it manually without using the updater, meaning flash CM10.2 as you flashed CM 10 and follow guide in developer thread.

I was hoping I wouldn't have to reinstall everything

- Upgrading from another CM10/CM10.1/CM10.2 prior to 20130816 Build?
Do a Nandroid Backup!
Install the ROM from internal sdcard using ClockworkMod Recovery
Optionally restore /data from Nandroid Backup (the update will wipe your /data)
Optionally install the Google Addon
- Upgrading from another CM10.2 Build?
Do a Nandroid Backup!
Install the ROM from internal sdcard using ClockworkMod Recovery
Note: The partition layout of CM10.2 (beginning from 20130816 nightly) differs of that of CM10/CM10.1. The first install will wipe your /data to switch to the new layout, but after that you may use CWM to restore/backup data of CM10/10.1/10.2. More about repartitioning
Did you get it, @pandronic ?
Xsenman's posts explained all you need.
Yes, thank you.
