I came home and noticed my wife's kindle 8.9 was a little different than yesterday. Realized it had lost root, and most likely there was an update. A few minutes later..I rerooted it So yes..it is rootable still.

Hi,
I don't remember the name of the method or even the thread name..but it is the method where we have 2 choices, one for phone, the second for tablets, etc. That is the one I used again..and it ran without problems.

Firstly I can confirm as well root method still works. As for trying to block updates, I think amazon has figured out a workaround to send the devices ota's even with renaming that .zip file. I'm going to downgrade to the last version and try renaming to confirm personally. I'll post whether it does or not.

I'll third that. Luckily, it's not that much work to reroot and reinstall the needed system apps. But how long before Amazon plugs the root method? Hopefully not until there's a working CM10 rom. More ideas on how to block Amazons OTA updates?

Ok, I did not rename the otacerts.zip file, but I did move it into another folder. I did not get updated to 8.1.4. I am still at 8.1.3_user_1312220.

Correction, this morning I was updated to 8.14. So far moving the file and renaming the file extension has not worked. I am now going to try renaming the file name and extension. We will see what happens when 8.15 comes...
As I noticed, if I turn off Wi-Fi whenever I don't use internet or the battery is lower than 40%, the update won't happen. This happened to me the first two days when 8.1.4 was out.
The good thing is Hascode doing well on 4.2 now and probably we will see now rom soon.

I have CWM installed, which it used.
Have never had any display quality issues, still looks great.
Ran root checker after to see if still rooted and it was. Opened ES File Explorer and it was granted root access.

Root first or after?
I haven't rooted my Nexus 7 yet, should I root it first before flashing 4.1.2? Will existing rooting method work for 4.1.2? Anyone has tried? Eventually I need root but I haven't done this one yet (all my phones have been rooted so I am fairly familiar w/ the process although each device is different).
Anyone checked if it has enabled 720p video? My update didn't come yet

are you sure you were rooted and had an unlocked bootloader?
Someone grab that file and post up here when you get it (myself included!)
There will probably be two OTA files...one for people on JRO03D and one for people on JRO03S. If anyone can help with those filenames, I'd greatly appreciate it. I'd like to mirror them on randomphantasmagoria.com for the community.

Very sure. Unlocked and rooted a week after I got my Nexus 7. Have the unlocked symbol on startup and ran root checker to comfirm root, also ES File Explorer was granted superuser access.
I found the firmware for 7.2.1 and it can be manually updated. Can we overwrite the 7.2.2 build with that and then root and block the ota?
I would try but the 7" unit i have isn't mine to break. i have the 8.9 rooted and ota blocked so that I won't have to have this issue.
7.2.1 is here:

how to block OTA for 8.9? We need to do it now.

You can't OTA backwards to a previous version. However, you CAN reflash the device with an older version. onemeila's recovery method (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1951254) SHOULD still work, if you're willing to go through the trouble of getting/making a factory cable. I'm personally considering this option, since the update broke both my root and my keyboard.

I looked back and read many "apparent" ways to stop automatic updating for the KFHD, but what is the best way that actually works? I just got my KFHD for Christmas and rooted it the other day but I am a noob and it took me ages to actually figure out how to do. So I don't want it to unroot itself.
Also how often is the KFHD's software actually updated and does each update wreck the root? Like I said I'm such a noob with this stuff!
Thanks in advance!

Isn't it otacerts.zip? You can find it in system/etc/security folder. I think amazon has figured a way around this if you are running newer software versions already. Nice to know that it will still work if you are running older system versions. I tried it,actually deleted the .zip, and received an update. This was on an 8.9 running 8.1.3(ota to 8.1.4,most current) but most things work the same on the different models.
I've recently tried this, can't confirm if it works, but will let you know: disabled all services within the the ADCP(Amazon Device Client Platform) apk . I use Rom Toolbox, a great app with all the tools you'll need.
Reviving an old thread, but the Androidcowboy states that as of June 16, 2013, renaming the otacerts.zip file still works on the KFHD.

EDIT: I made the change but am still waiting to see if it works. He has not failed me in the past with his information.
Amazon has put the link to the 8.2.0 stock rom online. This might especially be interessting for people with a european device since this includes the different languages and keyboard layouts. I don't know if this could be rooted as always. I heard that this rom might have problems with the 2nd bootloader. Maybe someone can test this for confirmation.

yeh when i bought mine it was 8.2.0 and it rooted fine, now today it just updated to 8.3.0.... really annoying Amazon just push these updates without asking. I guess I can root it again tho. I think I read somewhere on the forums that 8.3.0 has fixed some hole that was used to let us add a new bootloader, so I guess thats bad... I hadn't got around to putting TWRP on mine yet

In the bootloader thread, Hashcode added a step 4.5 to the process that you can use to flash the 8.1.4 bootloader on so you can get the 2nd bootloader in there.
Of course I lost root and it is still 4.4.2, but I can not find any documentation on what changed. Has anyone else received this update?
Baseband version: M8974A-AAAANAZM-2.0.20064
Kernel Version: 3.4.0
Update: TowelRoot does not seem to work with this update!
also got it. its a 220+mb update.
I just got this update as well. I got the message that says it is downloaded and wants to install. I am rooted with TWRP installed now. I have read that some people have had problems and been bricked when they tried to install some updates in the past. For this reason, I went into the hidden menu and disabled OTAs. Guess that didn't work. Has anyone else taken this update being rooted with twrp successfully?
You won't be able to rooted or with custom recovery. Check out the meta-inf script. It will fail if any fishy is going on with your device. I'm going to edit it later tonight so I can post the flash able zip for us to update. All its really updating is the radio.img and a few other apks as well as some security updates.
Checked no update for me. In the Houston area. But read online it was for the VoLTE update and In Flight text messaging

Once we flash and update, towel root will work again? Someone said they couldn't get towel root to work after the update. For now I'm just playing around with cm11. If someone would get it or another ROM working pretty good, I'd just use it. I had planned on selling the flex and use my bump to get a nexus 6 through t-mobile. But if things get rolling a little around here. I'm happy with my flex. I wish there was more I could do but its over my head. My previous two devices were a Nexus and HTC they were easy compared to this.
How do you disable OTA updates?
Sent from my LG-D959 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I pulled out all the "abort install if blah blah blah" lines from the Meta-Inf folder and all the lines to install the priv-apps and just for my sake i took out the priv-apps since it would replace with .odex and im deodexed. Checked the updater script for any other "abort or security" crap. Didnt see anything else. So i repacked the update into a flashable.zip and flash away. It adds this really cool "SECURITY ERROR" Under the LG logo on boot up. And transforms the device into a temporary outrageously expensive paper weight.
So i rebooted into twrp and restored. So far a no go. I think after digging through it and seeing what all is in it.....im just gonna make a flashable of the new radio.img incase it upgrades ours and gets better service or picks up those techno tunes from Venus.
I had 2 back to back updates, but I ended with D95920m.
I accidentally downloaded the update. I actually don't even remember doing it. I just saw that it was successfully downloaded. It hasn't updated yet. Is there anything i can do to get rid of it? I don't want to lose root. I don't have a custom recovery installed. I only have root access as that is typically all that I need.
Also, any chance anyone has tried to use towelroot on this after it breaks root? EDIT: Never mind, just saw the OP's update that towelroot will not work. F this. I need to get rid of this phone.
I renamed the file that it downloaded, so at least now it is just asking me to download the update again. I also installed a TWRP in the mean time. I guess I just need to disable updates now.
I am in the same situation... Can you please tell me where the update is downloaded to? I need to rename mine as well in case I were to accidentally hit install update.
How do you get the update notification to go away?
I have seen the option to hide it in one of the xposed modules, but can't remember which one...

The Update should download under Cache or Data/Cache. It should work disabling OTA updates in the hidden menu.
3845#*959#, the go to WLAN test --> OTA Settings and disable
