[Q] gapps on Fire HD that survive OTA updates? - 7" Kindle Fire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Am giving my Dad a Fire HD 8.9 for xmas.
What I'd like to do is get Google Market/Play on it + Drive, Search, Maps etc...
When he goes home, I don;t want to be on the hook for rooting and reinstalling....so in my ideal world I need to:
1. Have a method for installing the gapps.
2. When Fire HD updates occur, the gapps should persist.
3. Ideally, if there are updates to the gapps, he should be able to get them to self update.
Thoughts? Is it possible? Can one root, install gapps, somehow make them user apps, then unroot?
s.

After the 7.2.2 update, I lost root, but Google Play, Chrome, YouTube, and Google Plus all seemed to continue working fine without root access. So I think the root is only need to install them, but afterwards seem to work fine without it.
Apex launcher did stop working after losing root though. But I'm kinda over needing a custom launcher now, I'm okay using the stock launcher now.
I didn't try all the Google apps, but I suspect if Play and Chrome still work, the others probably would too.

Not sure if anyone noticed, but if you had nova launcher previously installed when rooted and then updated to 7.2.X, nova launcher still works like a charm. Plus, you can also set it as your default launcher .

[Q] Rooted my Kindle fire but it updated and now root seems to be undone

Hey Guys,
I recently rooted my Kindle Fire HD and installed Go Launcher onto it and everything was going perfectly. I then installed Google service and Google Play store which worked perfectly too but this seems to have triggered a Kindle Fire update which now seems to have removed Go Launcher from my kindle...although I can see that the apk file for it is still present. I was wondering if this means that my Kindle Fire has somehow un-rooted itself or if I just need to install Go Launcher again? I am a little baffled as to which way to proceed next, I could re-root but don't want to unless necessary since it is risky and I dont know the affect of re-rooted a machine.
Thanks,
Emmz
I did the same (rooting, play store, go launcher) and i didn't have an update and i still have root.
If i were you, i would first find out if the root-rights on your device really disappeared. For example you could use the ES File manager to find it out. Check if the root-settings in ES are set respectively can be set.
Did you install the go launcher correctly as described in the forum? Copy the apk to /system/apps, set the permissions and install it from there. Be careful!! Everything you do is at your own risk! Read the related thread before you start.
Good luck!

just reroot it would be my suggestion, update gets rid of root but ive read in some instances where people were still able to use their launchers too tho. i havent received an update yet but after i rooted mine, i renamed the otacerts.zip file to otacerts.zip.bak and i also checked that ota keeper box in superuser.
As others have said, OTA updates will unroot the device, and anything else you may have moved to the system folder will also be removed. This usually means launchers and the Vending.apk for Google Play too. It's safe to root again and reinstall your apk. This situation happened to me twice (OTA'd one day, and a few days later, another surprise OTA), and I've already rooted again and reinstalled my launcher.

[Q] Unable To Install Apps Via Google Play Store

Hi all,
I've rooted my Kindle Fire 7" HD but I'm unable to install any apps via the Google Play Store. SuperSU has been install successfully & I've also upgraded it to v1.3. Root Checker Basic confirms that I do indeed have root permissions. I followed the tutorials posted by @prokennexusa & the app loads up fine. But when I attempt to install anything, the Play store closes. When I attempt to reopen it, it will close straight away. I have to clear the app's data before I can load it up again.
I had done this previously on a different Kindle & all was fine so it's probably me missing a step. Anyone got any ideas on what that missing step might have been? I'm running v4.1.10 of the Play Store. Is this the latest?
Cheers for any tips you can give me,
Lee
Make sure you're using the right GAPPS for your OS. I recommend flashing Kinology ROM, as it includes GAPPS and SuperSU. It's just stock with extra features, so it works really well.

[Q] lost root today, no google play

Did I miss something? Was there an update in the last day or two that removes root access?
I noticed today that I couldn't access G Play Store, and couldn't delete hosts file because I couldn't mount r/w. Then supersu said there was no binary installed... hence no root
WTH man. Any advice? Do I need to re-root?? I use KFFirstAide, so I guess it wouldn't be that bad... still...
Thanks all
I heard that x.4.6 got released, root I think works, I'm not a amazon stock user as my signature says. Just go for it, it should work, if kffa doesn't try binaries root.

I know bin4ary's method works, because that is what I used.
Mine came with 7.4.6, and I am having difficulty determining what will work with it. If the update just went out, that makes sense.
Ok here's what worked:
Re-root using KFFirst Aide. Used the auto process, worked great (did not have to wipe device first).
Then followed KFFirstAide guide to installing Google Play manually. Works fine and I don't have to reinstall anything.
It appears that the latest update removes anything not stock in system/apps, which would explain why gplay stopped working (no logon services or framework)

[Q] reset to factory settings a rooted KFHD 7" and install Cyanogenmod on it

Hello everyone,
My name is Marika and I'm quite desperate! in fact, I decided to register on this forum because I can't figure out how to "save" my Kindle Fire HD 7".
I must say I am a total novice and working on a Mac, but I have access to a PC with Windows and Linux, too.
My problem is the following: I rooted my KFHD to install Google Play store and I installed Go Launcher EX and HD because I hated the carousel and wanted a nice tablet without necessarily showing everyone what was going on on my device.
I don't know if something went wrong but everything worked just fine until I noticed that even if I tried it, I couldn't update my KFHD from Amazon. I tried to ask the troubleshooting service and they told me I had to send back the device and they would send me a new one; so I tried to wipe it clean and unroot it otherwise they would charge me for the second device. The unroot part was fairly easy, and I tried to restore it to the factory settings by the default button inside the device, everything was cancelled but I couldn't update it, still, plus I noticed that the Go Launchers were still there. I re rooted it in order to try to remove the files manually but I couldn't figure out what to do, the only thing I know is that I have no "uninstall" button on these apps so I can't get rid of them, can someone help me? I would like to install Cyanogenmode now instead of those...
Thank you in advance for your time and sorry if this problem was already posted somewhere else, but I couldn't find anything similar to my case!
I'm confused, why area you trying to remove this stuff if you want to install CyanogenMod, when you install cyanogen mod it wipes everything including the os and excluding the sdcard, so there's no point in removing launchers. It sounds like you thought cm was a launcher, am I right or not understanding this right?
Sent from my Amazon Kindle Fire HD running CM10.1 Tablet UI using xda-developers app
actually no, I didn't think that Cyanogenmode was a launcher; I just thought that the Go Launchers would stay loaded on it anyways and that I needed to get rid of them to install the OS.
I would also like to figure out what could have happened to the KFHD to behave in a such way, because maybe there's really something that doesn't work and it's better if I get a working one while the warranty is still active, that's why I needed/wanted to do what I explained.
Thank you for your reply!
Well when flashing cm it you will basically factory reset, and the launchers that are stored in/system/apps will be wiped too, because everything in /system is deleted when you flash it. As for the updates you could always just restore a older version of amazon os and it would probably fix it, but why do you want to update the os? Most people disable updates so they don't have to keep rerooting it.

yeah probably it's easier and better to install cm right away without any other troubles!

Hi folks, I cant install an updated version of an apk on my fire hd8 2018. Always comes up not installed. I did manage to Install a beta version but it's too buggy. Trying to save the apps data too. About a year ago i side loaded playstore etc. Seems that amazon os update messed things up. I've used the amazon fire toolbox etc to try to help. This tool won't update google framework either. Wallpaper won't stay on nova launcher either. I'm at a loss. Could anyone please help as I'm at my wits end. Really just need this one apk to work. Thanks

Try it to reset your Fire tablet, bypass Amazon account registration (Do not register) and re-install Google API services from Fire toolbox
