I bought a Nexus 7 16gb as my Christmas Gift right when the price dropped. Well I somehow cracked my screen despite it being in a case..think I stepped on it turning my alarm off in the morning. Mostly works but super bummed. Looks like the prices to fix are almost the price to buy a new one so I think I'll buy a new one to replace this - and of course they're all sold out. I'll have to wait until after Christmas. I do love this thing and by god I'm willing to spend another $200 for another one. This is my brain at work, I couldn't function without it. Fortunately the crack is mostly off the main screen, but it is pretty smashed.
But what this is really about is how to transfer my current setup. I'm on 4.2.1. I use CWM but my understanding is both CWM and TWRP don't yet support fhe 4.2.1 file structure so i can't just nandroid back it up and restore it.
I do have Titanium backup and it backs it all up and I sync to dropbox. Is that my only other option? Get a new one, unlock it, root it, install TiBU, sync to dropbox, then press on each app and hit restore from backup? Then go set my widgets back up? Or is there some way to make TiBU take a FULL backup and do a FULL restore elsewhere? I notice all sorts of option in TiBU menu -- "create update.zip" for example. Will that make a full flashable backup of my apps and data?
Thanks....
What do you mean they don't support the file structure? I backup and restore to my hearts content using TWRP
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
On 4.2.1? Last I heard the whole multiuser /0/emulated thing broke backups and restores. Backups would run fine, but restores wouldn't work. Has this been fixed on newer TWRP or CWM?
If so I could make a backup and concievably just copy the nandroid backup file to the correct directory (whatever that is) to my new device and restore, right? (I'll get the same size device, 16gb)
This after unlocking, rooting, and installing said custom recovery on new device. I have an image for CWM 6.0.1.0.
TWRP and CWM supporting 4.2
As far as I can tell they still don't support the 4.2 file system - someone please correct me if I'm wrong! People say it backs up fine but they restores fail. I'm thinking of using Wug's toolkit to make a nandroid backup, then use Wug's tool to do a nandroid restore. I don't know if it stores the nandroid file on my computer or on the tablet; if it's my computer no problem, if it's the tablet then when it gets to restore part it'll fail.
I think I need to make a separate thread about this...

Good to know. Did you have multiple users?
if not could you create a couple users back up and try to restore to that to see if all users get restored?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app
Restore had two users, both restored fine. I used TWRP 2.3.2.1.
Edit: seems like the main issue is nandroid restoration from 4.2 back to 4.1. I was going from one 4.2 rom to another, so i had no problems.
In case your still thinking the toolkit route I just want to verify on mskips toolkit you have the option to save backup on device, computer, or both. Can't say about wugs, but I'm assuming they probably have the same functionality.
Edit: actually I haven't used a toolkit for my 7, but I did download it and it appeared to have the same options as the one for my gnex, so the above should be correct.

Really?!?!?
you're able smash your screen without noticing it...
Isn't Nexus 7 , Gorrila Glass?
meaning they have a name for the glass, so its suppose to be different?
2 things... Gorrila Glass is fake? or you really smashed the crap out of it...
Becuz drop tests that i saw with Nexus 7, (its a deliberate drop) the damages arent that huge...

No, the N7 is not gorilla glass. It is a scratch resistant glass made by the same company, Corning. Also, while gorilla glass is great for hits and scratches and things like that, it isn't bullet proof or invulnerable. If you step on a screen, putting 100 lbs of weight on it, I doubt your screen would survive it with or without it.

Hah, I wish.
I was estimating that if you stepped on your device, you wouldn't actually put 100% of your weight directly on the screen. So if you weight ~150-250, and got out of bed, stepping on the unit, you would probably have about half of your weight on the screen, the other either on your other foot or on the bed (via your butt).
On the other hand, if you jumped out of bed quickly, the extra innertia could actually cause a higher PSI on the part of the screen that you hit.
But in either case, in order for Gorilla Glass to be strong, it also has to be a little flexible. With a tablet, the distance between the sides of the bezel would result in a large portion of the screen flexing enough that, even if it didn't break completely, could damage the panel underneath.
It appears I stepped on the edge of it as I jumped out of bed to shut my alarm off. Interestingly the worst part of the crack is at the very edge, and the bezel even bent in a little - I guess showing how the glass flexed and pulled the bezel. There is just one spot on the actual screen where touch no longer works, but I can flip to landscape to hit something there then flip back. This despite there being hairline cracks extending a few inches onto the screen.
I was thinking of doing a nandroid backup and restoring on a new N7 but I'm afraid that will mess things up like the Android ID or other things unique to a given Android device, so I have decided I will use Titanium Backup and do a batch restore - apparently it gives the option to not restore the Android ID to the new device.
Now I just need the 16GB to be back in stock at Google Play (I intend to order from them cause the shipping to the remote island where I live is insane otherwise, their's was dirt cheap for 2-day).
If only it were Gorilla glass And yes I do have a case but I guess I somehow fell asleep and dropped it on the carpet floor flipped open face up
You loved your Nexus 7 and its such a great device...
One question
Why was it on the floor?
If we go back to the Titanium solution I can tell you that you might want to try out the pro version, which cost like 6-7$ (I'm using another currency on the play store).
You're able to restore all the apps with a few clicks. Open up the app (1), Batch options (2), restore all backups (3), confirm (4).

Well as I mentioned I was reading in bed and fell asleep and it dropped on the floor face up.
I do have pro TiBU, that's a mandatory on all my Android devices. Most important paid app imo.

You can make a nandroid & transfer that file over after root & recovery installation on your replacement device & then it would be exactly like the damaged one, minus the damage...

and I need to know the best way to do it.
Before I begin, this isn't a solicitation for a sale.
I'm going to be getting a new phone. Currently, I have a Hero along with my gf's Hero that she broke last April. She dropped it on a hard bathroom floor. The screen is still intact but the trackball popped out and I never found it. Also, the unit doesn't power up. That's the biggest issue I'm facing. I disassembled it and tried to see if the contacts were broke. They didn't seem to be.
I was going to sell both phones together. Sort of a 'you get 2 phones but one doesn't work...use for parts...'. Where my screen has a slight, 2cm scratch, hers is perfect. Mine has the dust under the screen issue, hers doesn't. Mine was one that had the paint come off the power button issue, hers did not.
My main concern is how to get rid of any data on her phone. I'm guessing there isn't a way to do it unless I can get the thing to boot up. If I can't, would I be better off just selling the screen and housing and ditch the 'guts'?
Thanks a lot for your input.
Wouldn't you assume that if it can't boot up that odds are Simone else may not be able to either, hence, no access to her info...

I thought about that. However, I'd hate to find out that there was just one solder point that wasn't allowing it to power up and a person could fix it with relative ease.

may be obvious
Why not just build the sweetest hero you can, from the two, then dump the sensitive materials.
Like what, with 2 screens? Lol
I would if I had the patience and know-how. I can take stuff apart but it doesn't go back together as well. My luck, id toast the other phone as well.

Easy fix.
1. Go to local hardware store.
2. Purchase biggest hammer your budget allows.
3. Return home.
4. Use biggest hammer to "erase" data thoroughly.
5. Gather up data pieces and place in a baggie.
6. Throw baggie into trash.
7. ???
8. Profit.

Hey just wondering, cause this happens to me so random if sometimes at all, but when it does its annoying. Sometimes the menu button or back button or so on the side doesnt respond. Sometimes it responds on the OPPOSITE side of the tablet till I flip it around.
Other things I get are sometimes the menu/keyboard will pop open and close randomly. Yet I dont know why.
Just wondering if anyone else has seen this type of issue before?
Id hate to say its defective... hate worrying about replacing and redoing EVERYTHING.
My first S7 I bought on opening day had that problem and an upper level tech at Dell told me to go back to the Tmo store and exchange it. Apparently it IS a known glitch.

What's wrong with getting it exchanged? Do you have ClockworkMod recovery installed? If so, all you have to do is make a Nandroid backup, and backup the entire contents of the internal storage to your PC. Restore all those files onto the new unit, flash ClockworkMod recovery again, restore your Nandroid, and enjoy.
Maybe, I mean Ive been doing stuff since the G1, still AM using the G1 as my main, then a HD2 for media.
Never really used nandroid heh. So not fully sure how exactly it goes... I mean if its simple, sure then maybe, ok. Then I gotta get another screen protector... not like replacements give you a credit for that. =/
Mine did that from day 1. Got a replacement and its much better. Has not done it once. Was contemplating dumping it, but now I'm really enjoying the form factor, even though I'm not a huge android fan.

I got a new battery last year in sept or that time around, but its kinda loose. (its 1200mA, Original samsung battery for the Ace)
It's not the exact size though, its a wee bit smaller, and slimmer.A slight tap on the back and my phone switches off.
This happens even if, a slight shake or something.
One day, I was using my phone, I was in the bus, and a bump came up,my hand shook, and the phone switched off.
when I switched it on, all the apps stored in my SD card was gone.
I rebooted twice, still nothing.
So, I downloaded the apps again, and they installed properly.
Then I decided to change my rom since I thought I've used it for a few months, so I switched to "The Ultimatum"
And just last week, the same thing happened, except this time, even when I download the same apps (like FB and whatsapp)
it doesnt install. FB FC's before even opening and Whatsapp FC's after it says it's found message backup.
so I installed friendcaster and FB messenger.

I think your problem is your battery, if the changes aren't saved you can lose your data...it'd corrupt you data partition too, so flash a fresh stock an then flash a custom rom and be careful with the battery
If you're still under warranty, head to the nearest Samsung service. They'll provide you a new battery free of cost. If your warranty is over, you may have to pay. Any case, buy one new battery.

Its a tested process, the old nokia phones usually got their connector pins loose after 2 years of use and people used a folded paper to stuff the casing and make sure the battery stays connected. Sure there was never a problem of heating then but that's why i said to use something heat resistant, i am not suggesting him to blow himself or is phone up over this.
He bought a new battery, that indicates that he is not under warranty anymore, i suggested a way he can make his battery fit inside the case without disconnecting and loosing data free of cost, now you are suggesting him to spend more money on such a trivial thing?
Why waste money, its not spoiling the cosmetic looks of the phone, its fixing a problem, its safe and its free, why are you opposed to something this good?

Everything local works in India But people in the outside world, in U.S.A. for example don't go to try such things, they just get a replacement. But why not give it a try if the phone's sold with a defective hardware and you're still under warranty ? You're bound to get a free replacement.
Talking about money, if this advice was being given to a noob that obviously will work wonders outta it, he/she would definitely end up in a deeper trouble...! I've seen people bury water drenched phones under rice...! So in short, xda's noobs are way more experimental then what you'd suppose. So, always give suggestions that bring a permanent fix to the problem, so that you don't have to keep on replacing the paper wearing under your battery just because it doesn't fit the size like it did yesterday

And i just gave a suggestion, its not about who uses it, a noob does not mean he is an idiot or is retarded and he will use paper alongside a heated battery, that would be really crazy, it only means that he is new at the android development and is not familiar with the technical processes and terms, i didn't suggest rocket science to the guy!!
And its just a suggestion, if it works in India, that does not mean it won't work anywhere else, if he likes it he can follow it otherwise ignore it or use a better option and its not your place to approve or reject someone's suggestion when you are not the OP.

They told me they do it as a courtesy, so there are no guarantees. They should have people that are used to installing them, so it shouldn't be terrible. Plus, you have a lifetime guarantee from Zang if you register it
They are super simple to install vs the old plastic/invisible shield rubbery type screen protectors. The biggest thing to focus on is alignment. To remove all dust, just use a piece of scotch tape on the screen before install.

What ^ said.. New here, and browsing.. RAZR 5g (few of them now). I repair phones, so I figured why not take on the hardest..
Lot of love for this device though, even though it is the most delicate phone I've used. Yeah.... Not one drop. I mean it.. Never seen a screen shatter from a one foot drop with a case on, but hey.. First time for everything, right?
I've already got one rooted, though now waiting on parts for it. Then back to they table with it, and pray my hands are steady.
But yeah... What's up with TWRP with that one? Not a good idea to fully flash, considering the lack of touch, but I'm wondering...
Could it be that the resolution is naturally zoomed? Therefore touch and screen are both wacked, because of the offset with the rendering of TWRP? I'm not cutting into the .IMG to play with that.. (I'm going to break it further, I believe) Just thinking out loud mostly, so if you read this, own a RAZR, and want to mess with it, hit me up..
Other than that, nice to make acquaintances, and such...
