[Q] Question: Want to sell a 'dead' Hero... - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

and I need to know the best way to do it.
Before I begin, this isn't a solicitation for a sale.
I'm going to be getting a new phone. Currently, I have a Hero along with my gf's Hero that she broke last April. She dropped it on a hard bathroom floor. The screen is still intact but the trackball popped out and I never found it. Also, the unit doesn't power up. That's the biggest issue I'm facing. I disassembled it and tried to see if the contacts were broke. They didn't seem to be.
I was going to sell both phones together. Sort of a 'you get 2 phones but one doesn't work...use for parts...'. Where my screen has a slight, 2cm scratch, hers is perfect. Mine has the dust under the screen issue, hers doesn't. Mine was one that had the paint come off the power button issue, hers did not.
My main concern is how to get rid of any data on her phone. I'm guessing there isn't a way to do it unless I can get the thing to boot up. If I can't, would I be better off just selling the screen and housing and ditch the 'guts'?
Thanks a lot for your input.

Wouldn't you assume that if it can't boot up that odds are Simone else may not be able to either, hence, no access to her info...

I thought about that. However, I'd hate to find out that there was just one solder point that wasn't allowing it to power up and a person could fix it with relative ease.
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App

may be obvious
Why not just build the sweetest hero you can, from the two, then dump the sensitive materials.

Like what, with 2 screens? Lol
I would if I had the patience and know-how. I can take stuff apart but it doesn't go back together as well. My luck, id toast the other phone as well.

Easy fix.
1. Go to local hardware store.
2. Purchase biggest hammer your budget allows.
3. Return home.
4. Use biggest hammer to "erase" data thoroughly.
5. Gather up data pieces and place in a baggie.
6. Throw baggie into trash.
7. ???
8. Profit.

Ha! Funny stuff. I could easily make a killing considering I have several hammers at home already capable of doing the job. Profit galore.

Nexus one stolen. Should I buy another?

So.... my car got stolen (from a underground "secure" parking spot too), and my Nexus one was in the car. And no we didn't find the guys who took it, but we did recover the car relatively in tack.
now the question. I loved my rooted Nexus One. Had lots of fun with it and it did everything I needed. But it was damn expensive as I bought it for AT&T.
The Samsung Captivate came out for AT&T.
Do I fork over the funds for a nexus one? $500 +
Or do I pick up a samsung Captivate ~$200...
or wait for some other option ....
dreamflux
If you do a ton of things that can only be done when rooted, a N1 will probably be your best option. I'd also wait a bit and see some of the reviews that the Captivate gets from different news sites.
Shouldn't your insurance cover that?
No matter what phone you get, it will never compare to the quick experience of the N1.
Sure, you might get a phone with a better screen, slightly better proc, or whatever, but
no matter what phone you buy, I don't think there will be anything QUITE like owning the
officially sanctioned 'google phone'. I think you'll miss always having the latest version of
android running at all times.
@GldRush98 no.... AT&T doesn't offer insurance on the google phone, and the policy of the car didn't cover personal items in the car....=/
@hollywooder - yah.... You've definitely described my sentiments.... that and I have many many peripherals.... but the idea of realizing that my phone would have effectively cost me over a $1000 is a bit tough to swallow.
If I were you, I would probably go with Captivate.
I'd be missing the trackball and flash though.

AT&T doesn't? Man, that sucks. T-Mobile insures the Nexus One!
On top of everything else, I'd seriously think about purchasing WaveSecure for your next phone whether it be an Android, iPhone, or Blackberry. Well worth it for the ability to do realtime tracking of where your phone is. Hell, you could have probably found the guys still in your stolen car if you had it. Just me .02
@chesh420 I do have wave secure... that was part of the reason why I was able to find the car...was able to track it to the last known area before the battery died. Found our car a few blocks away. but alas the phone was long gone, either they got rid of it some how, or haven't turned it back on yet, or my nexus might have recieved some other horrible fate.
but yes.... A great endorsement to WaveSecure. .
But yes, Wave Secure was great

Keep watching, the bozos might turn it back on after they figure out what a MicroUSB is. Or they'll sell it to Bob's Pawn....
Note to self... Write down IMEI.
That's a bummer...hopefully it will turn back up soon! At least there's a chance with WaveSecure.

Damn, that sucks. Insurance companies do whatever they can to get out of paying
but what if the low life finds a way to remove wavesecure? isnt there a way to stop them from deleting apps like wavesecure or mobile defense so we are still able to track the phone down?
i'd get a g1 and wait for the next great thing from htc and google. i've said it in a few different threads now, the 3g issues and no physical keyboard are the reasons.
given, i won't buy anything on contract.
when you used wavesecure to find your car, can you remote wipe before locating, and the app still gives you a location ? did you try instamapper and decide on wavesecure instead ?
I'm recommending the Captivate to my friends and family... but to a guy like you and me... I can't recommend the Samsung until a little more testing surfaces. Sure it has a little better specs but would you be happy using their crappy software forever if you are unable to root and flash custom roms?
I used to cook with Da_G back when we had Samsung Blackjacks and the Samsung stuff was pretty tight lipped compared to HTC. You'd think that company's would figure out that being able to mod phones increases sales. They should know that the bottle neck is the carriers contracts and we upgrade asap regardless.
Open the phone up, let us tinker and make it everything we can dream of, which will bring in more customers.
I know lots of the Samsungs can be flashed, which hopefully helps with unlocking the potential of the Captivate. Maybe pick you up a cheap $20 pre-paid to use until some more info comes out.
Make sure you call your carrier and get the IMEI banned, they will not be able to use the phone anywhere
@player911 - yah.... that's the way i'm feeling.... I think that ultimately spending another $500 for an N1 for another 5-6 months seems a bit pricey for my modding happiness. I'll hang in there and head back to my little nokia n95 brick for a while.... and see what I can find on craig's list for a used one for cheap. But yah.... I mirror your sentiments on the samsung
@xXJay_RXx I think Wave secure had an additional install that would notify if it was removed or something like that.... I can't seem to remember....
@ohgood - You can remote lock on wave secure with a message that pops up to whoever turns it on. It can say "return for a reward", or in my case " contact the police RE: case #". I left it on lock for a while and the sent the notification to remote wipe after we found the car and wrote off the nexus one.
@p00r -can't remember to imei #
If it were me, I would not buy it again and wait out for something else. My reason is because the N1 is a really expensive phone off contract and it just doesn't seem like a good deal as it was 6 months ago. There are and probably will be better options for the same price.
If the price were lower, I would go for it. But it doesn't seem like you can find a new one without forking over full price.
yah.... especially since now my only choices are ebay and criags list..... =/ Long Live N1

[Q] Question for someone with Verizon experience.

As some of you may have seen, I'm one of the geniuses that softbricked a Droid 3. I tried contacting Verizon live chat and telling them that my phone was crashing every time I clicked on the little green guy (lulz) and they told me to take it in to Verizon. Will they make me pay to replace the phone? Should I just wait for an SBF? Thanks in advance.
EDIT: Also, is there a way to push /app to /system/app without ADB? My phone is stuck on the set up page, and force closes every time I click the Android. I can't enable USB debugging because I can't go past the Android. Can I push it using Fastboot somehow? If so, could someone elaborate?
Tap the screen with the little green guy in this order.
Top left, top right, bottom right, bottom left!
That should get you past that screen.

Fantastic.
You did this in store or over the phone?
You best bet is in the store - they'll look at your phone while you wait and give you a new (refurbed) unit right there or otherwise tell you what the deal is. So worst case is they tell you its not covered and you just go home with your busted D3 and tail between your legs.
If you do it over the phone, they send you a new (refurbed) phone with a return envelope for you to return your phone. After you return your phone, they check it out, and if they decide it's not covered by warranty, they bill you for the new phone with no option to return it.
Of course, the store may not have replacements in hand, so you may be forced to do it over the phone, but I always try the store first to minimize my possible liability.
Honestly though, VZW is pretty good about giving out replacement devices. They usually just check the water detection stickers and if they're clear, they'll just give you a new one.

Try to use voice commands to access settings either buy using a headset with a button or by accessing the dialer by selecting a notification from a text message you send yourself. Just say "goto settings" when asked for a voice command.

This isn't a bad idea. I can't text myself though because the phone has no data. Think I broke it somehow trying to replace the dialer. If they try to be gay at Verizon I'll buy a headset at Bestbuy, it's right next door. Thanks for the tip.

This! The staff at the Verizon store always try to find an excuse not to help with an exchange. Over the phone they are very helpful and polite.
I just called them, they are over-nighting me a new phone. I just told him every time I touch the Android it crashes and none of the capacitive buttons will allow me to bring up any menus and he just says, "Wow, well I guess we'll just send you a new phone." They might be a bit expensive, but have fantastic support.

Defective Exchanges @ Gamestop

I have to say, that's one of the things I like about having an actual store to go to and deal with customer service face to face.
There's no way for them to put you on hold for 45mins to an hour, there's no waiting for the call or email that never comes, just to call back and find out there is no record of your complaint or call.
So I called my local Gamestop, the same girl that sold me my N7 was on shift. I asked her if she had any in stock for an exchange, she said "no, but let me pull it up in the computer". She tells me of 3 stores that have some in stock and asks if I need their number or address...
Since the next store was like 5 blocks away, I just drove there. They only had 1. I walk in and the sale person says "hey, hum, those aren't supposed to be sold yet, I don't think I can do the exchange until the SD of 8/7" (lol). He calls his manager, she didn't answer. He called another one on his cell, and that one told him, if I have my receipt and product, there was no problem doing the exchange.
He asks me what's wrong with it, I tell him I've randomly had a black line flash 3 times in the last week~. And although I was reluctant to exchange it after reading some of the stories behind other's defective units, as mine's was in top shape. He says yeah but if you can get a new one free, why not right? I said, yeap you're right.
So 5 mins later I walk out with my new exchange.
Now I am afraid to open and inspect it.. Heart's beating fast, I think I am gonna faint.. someone call 911..
Yeah, I really don't want to find out this one's defective.. I really, really enjoy this tablet. :silly:

P.S. Anyone know if you get the $25 credit again when registering a new unit on the same account?
EDIT: 23,618 units between serial numbers on my two units
OBSERVATIONS: This unit's back is darker than my previous one. The power and volume buttons feel more clicky, plasticy and tend to stick out more especially on the bottom. I am guessing different materials sources.

Why would you get another $25 added to your account? There is/was a loophole where you could, but on new accounts with a different credit card on file I believe. Don't be surprised if Google closed it by now.

So then if I active it on another account it would get the credit, but not on the same one, if I have previously already done so?
I think the loophole you mention is where you could factory reset to get your credit in case you hadn't the first time around, correct? That's not what I'm talking about. I am talking about a new sealed never been registered unit.
I went to my store about a defective exchange, they only had 1 in store and it was on reserve so the guy called around then said he'd email the supplier. When it comes in they'll call me and I can exchange it out.

Originally yes, on this unit I did it manually, but basically the same exact thing the toolkit does, as it just does it for you via a script.
Honestly though, my first unit was perfect. I am not sure it was attributed to hardware, but more towards software, as it only seemed to be happening while in chrome and it might not have been google's or asus's fault. I didn't want to find out after it was too late to get an exchange.
I hear ya clockcycle.. I too have a love/hate relationship with Android... I typically love the HW and need to fix the SW.. But in the end, I'm always VERY happy...
Follow up on replacement unit. Seems a bit slower to sense/react to rotating and touch requires more pressure, less sensitive.

Funny. I bought my tablet at a GameStop and since then I have been to 5 more stores between Houston and Dallas and the only store that agreed to exchange my N7 didn't because I got to Waxahachie 20 mins after they closed. (My fault obv.)
One store refused to even though they had one in stock claiming only "That's a tablet. We can't do that. You have to contact the manufacturer."

They tried that as an option on me, I told them the manufacturer told me to deal with the place of purchase according to their policy and until that option is exhausted to resort to dealing with Google/ASUS warranty..
Some times some employees take returns personally, just get another rep on the phone or go in the store, FIRM but respectfully..
I ended up having to exchange this replacement as well, but really nothing wrong with the first one, 2nd one they were willing to exchange. 3rd one is just a "perfect" as the 1st and 2nd were... YMMV

It really shouldn't be that different than your old unit. That's strange that touch would require more pressure.
I went back and for a replacement at the store I missed in my earlier post. It was still there a couple o days later.
Now, I'm experiencing a very slight screen lift that I could probably lay ignore, and flicker that is a reliable semi-hourly infuriation.
I think I'm going to have to exchange this for a third unit once the good serials start flowing steady.

Unless the replacement unit was assembled in another plant and or used materials from another source. Happens often. My 3rd unit acts differently as well. It's also less sensitive. It didn't want to apply the updates, once it "did", the about still claimed I was on the original and when I checked for an update would tell me I was up to date. After applying the screen protector, this unit also did not respond to touches at all (as others have reported with their units) but both my previous units were responsive with 1-2 hour(s) of drying. Which leads me to believe touch screen was a different brand from another source, or sensitivity settings are different. Who knows..
-CC
P.S. It's ok, it works..
You are making me all nervous now, I hope mine is the right amount sensitive when it shows up tomorrow(hopefully). I didn't know they used different materials on a line of devices. Interesting.

2nd Nexus returned....refund time.

I'm sorry to say my second Nexus 7 despite initially looking good has now popped the left side of its glass and displayed a stuck green sub-pixel. I'm really disappointed as I think its a fantastic device apart from the poor QC. I may try and buy later if I see on this forum that ASUS have got there act together.
Good luck to all who are trying to get a decent unit.
Poor QC, overinflated expectations for a entry level device, or a newly registered shill poster.

Here is a thought... A crazy one I know but here you go....
Instead of constantly replacing a newly released device because of minor screen lift that does not effect normal use how about taking a chill pill, breathing in and out and relaxing?
Mine has screen lift and it still works great! Me? I will wait a few months and replace it once the flaw is fixed in manufacturing and there has been enough time to filter out all the flawed still in stock versions...
When I picked up my first one and it had screen lift, I was disappointed and angry. When I exchanged for a second one and it had screen lift and a non-functioning touch screen, I was just angry. When I picked up my third one with screen lift I just shrugged. Yesterday I picked up my fourth one with screen lift and a loudly popping speaker and I just laughed :silly:
There must be bad lots or something?
On my first unit I bought at staples and everyone I know local has no issues and no replacements. I have been and will keep looking for issues on them but so far so good.

I'll bet that what actually happens is you'll send yours in, and you'll receive a refurb with EXACTLY the same problem. But you're so Zen-like about the whole thing, you'll just smile and go through the process over and over and never lose your cool. I envy your calm.
Of course, you'll have to hope the defect is obvious immediately, because every time you connect a new device to your Google account (and granted, one should put a hard limit on how many defects one accepts before considering the product to be junk) you'll use up a Google Music activation. And we can only deactivate 10 devices in a year. A big deal? Maybe, if you go through freaking defective products like this trying to get one that works decently.
Oh, and that will be another device that shows up in your list in Google Play that you can't delete. You'll remove it from the menu, but it'll be sitting there, taunting you.
Oh, and maybe you open an ebook on the defective that's limited to 3 devices, and then you can't open the book on your new one. And maybe the "remove from device" option isn't there, so you have to go through Google to get things fixed. But hey, relax, right?
If you're happy to sit on a defective device for months with the hope that it'll be better fixed later, knock yourself out. For some of us, the Nexus 7 is a special device, being the only Nexus tablet, and we just want one without defects. This whole preachy routine really does get a bit old.

Here is a rational thought.
How about a device should not have a so called minor screen lift issue. That moves around when you touch you the screen. That when you pick up the device and hold it the damn thing feels like it is falling apart and about to simply break.
Only a fool would accept that and keep the device. It doesn't affect normal use? What are you smoking? A touch screen device with a defective screen doesn't effect normal use? So you're going to keep a bad crappy device for a couple of months because hell I don't know why. So everybody else should keep their as well.
These devices currently have a ton of QC issues. Fact. People will report and discuss them. The only trolls are the people that keep saying people reporting issues etc must be trolling.

Guess how many devices I have linked to my account? lol
Seven GNex phones and two N7s. I've returned 4 N7s but one of them had a broken touch screen so I couldn't actually set it up and on the other the screen lift was so bad that I didn't bother powering it up. Crazy stuff. I honestly don't know why I keep coming back to the Nexus brand after my recent experiences.
Here's an actual rational though.
Only a fool would fail to read and call someone out for something opposite of what they said.
CHILL OUT, COUNT TO 10 before you make yourself look like an idiot again. He never suggested you accept a flaw, he said that repeatedly doing the same thing and expecting a different result is not the best idea. Obviously you want the device, but instead of complaining about it here, which will do absolutely freaking nothing, why not take a breath and waiting a week? Rapid fire returns sure haven't worked for you yet.
Yawn....
Every device has growing pains the the N7 is no different... Google botched the pre-orders and they have a manufacturing issue to correct...
I will TRY and make this simple...
Let say Google had 10 million produced before they correct the manufacturing process / defect.. Now lets say they sold 5 million... That leaves 5 million defective units still on shelves / in stock...
You can continue to exchange it until the cows come home and guess what? Your replacement is going to come from the defective (read: in stock) pile until the defect is corrected and the originally shipped (read: defective) units have been depleted...
Save yourself the headache, stress, tantrums and wait a few months for the issue to be resolved and the fixed units to become the in stock norm...
If the unit has an issue that prevents it from functioning then that's another matter... Slight screen raise is not one of those... Keep on replacing it and keep getting the same (read: originally manufactured defect) unit in the mail... It's your headache not mine and I'm not the one throwing a tantrum in an online forum..
I will wait a few months and exchange mine once Google has resolved the issue and the in stock tablets are that of the fixed variety...

Same for me. I contemplated not returning it to Office Depot but I ran by there at lunch and swapped for this one which appears good so far.

You said you are fine with screen lift. Screen lift is a defect.

Vibration no longer works. Warranty service sucks.

I am highly disappointed is how Google operates their warranty service. I have never in my entire life had to pay an additional $400 to have a device sent to me as as hold. It is outrageous and completely ludicrous. There are other ways to guarantee payment if someone keeps the replacement, for example charge the card on file if you do not not receive it within 30 days. Had I known that the vibration function on on my Nexus 5 would malfunction as well as having to go through this I would have just went with a more stable device, i expected better. Stay away from Nexus, as nice as it is. They obviously do not hold up quality wise and the customer service in getting it replaced is not worth it.

I don't believe they actually take the money. They authorize the amount and check that it's available. You're not really charged anything until you don't return the device.

they dont charge you $400, its put on "hold". basically, they are checking to make sure that the money is there in case it does need to be charged. the way they do business is normal. there have been more than one person on xda, that posted about it, about stealing replacements. google is covering their ass. if, they dont get your phone back, then they will charge you.
obviously the nexus is not for you, as its not perfect. no device is perfect. even apple makes imperfect devices. what you should do is follow the procedure properly instead of whining about google putting 400 on hold until they get the device back.

You aren't paying $400. They're just putting a hold on the card to reserve that amount in case you don't return the phone so they can charge you later.
It is outrageous and completely ludicrous.

That's your opinion, which you're entitled to, but it's a pretty standard practice. It's often referred to as "cross-shipping" and many people prefer it because they don't have to wait to send their phone back and get the new one. By doing it this way, they aren't without a device. You're free to not like this way of doing it, but you're also free to investigate the return policies of a company before doing business with them.

And what if you don't have enough credit after 30 days? The hold they put on the card is to make sure they can get their money later if they need to. There are certainly other ways to do it as well. They could have an option to have you return the phone before they send out a new one, for people who don't want the hold on their credit card.

It would indeed be great if we could all know in advance whether what we buy was going to have a fault or not.
as well as having to go through this

As I mentioned above, you're certainly free to investigate Google's return and RMA policies and procedures before doing business with them.

I get that you're having a bad experience, and that's unfortunate. I returned my Nexus 7 three times before I got one without touch screen issues, so I know how you feel. Ranting about it won't make the situation any different, but I can understand how it might make you feel a bit better to let it all out. For what it's worth, I have the original Nexus One, and the Galaxy Nexus, and they're both still working perfectly with no faults. So give Google a chance to make things right before you write off Nexus devices for good.
Like many has said in this thread, they don't charge you, they just place a hold on your card which goes away once you return the defective device. I really don't see why this is a problem... unless you don't have credit or have to use your debit card, which if that is the case you have a whole bunch of other issues to worry about.
I have never had a problem doing it this way and I think the RMA process is great. They send you a new device in advance while you get to continue to use the supposed defective device, you return the defective one once you get the new one, unless you have financial problems you won't notice the hold at all.
Don't like it? Try LG's warranty process! You send them the defective phone in advance, they fix it, you might get it back 2 weeks later. Unless you have a back up phone, you're without a phone during this time!
I'll take Google's RMA process and a non issue, non impact hold on my credit card anyday.
Google is the best company I have dealt with whenever I had to exchange phones. They ship you for free a new phone within two days and they also pay prepaid shipping label to return your old one. Authorization drops within 6 days depending on your bank. Get a samsung or htc, tell them your phone has problems, and let me know how long you will have to stay without a phone
meh thread is meh
well

I wouldn't trust you to return your defective unit either.
:crying:
They're not charging you as the others have said.
If the whole situation is that traumatic get a land line.
Not everyone has $400 laying around to be put on hold to exchange a defective unit. Amazon doesn't do this. I'd buy a Nexus from another source vs. Google, even though the price is unbeatable.

There is not a device that is as easy to upgrade as the Nexus. I love Nexus as a whole I still own my Galaxy Nexus. Their warranty service could be better. They should change that policy. We all know how awesome owning a Nexus is and being able to upgrade to the latest version of Android with ease.

options
You pick up an iwireless or something similar for 10 bucks.
Send the nexus back for exchange.
You can also transfer your # to the cheapy phone then back again
when your new nexus arrives.
But really if you think it's such a crappy phone and company get rid of it.
The hold policy was developed AFTER everyone complained on the Nexus One, having to wait a week for exchange units...cross-shipping did not exist back then. I LOVE having cross-shipping available, and a card hold is perfectly reasonable. Buy it from Amazon if it bugs you that much.
The vibration no longer working is not the issue really, **** happens. I have gone through 3 Xbox 360s that died from the three rings of death, and yet I will still choose the Xbox One as my next system. I had my Nokia n900 swaped out twice before getting a device that functioned properly, and I would totally get a new Nokia. (Although an Android Nokia I would prefer, but that won't ever happen) I am mostly frustrated with how they service their warranty. I'm sure I am the minority in not having $400 to put on hold due to rent etc. I just feel people should know how they operate just in case they just so happen to get a defective unit.
